A strip story is a short dialogue or story with each line typed onto a separate strip of paper. In a strip story activity the learners are each given a sentence to memorize from a paragraph. They then must tell their sentences to each other and decide whose sentence is first, second, and so on. The hypothesis to be tested that there is significant difference means between two samples using strip story and without strip story. The target of population is SMP Fatahillah Lohbener at the second grade in the academic year 2006/2007. From the population of 466 students, the writer selected 60 students of class VIII A and class VIII B as the research subject. This research methodology is true experimental research, whereas the instrument of this research is measuring the implementation strip story through test and questionnaire. The data analysis technique in this research use inferential statistic technique by determining mean difference between two variables, determining standard deviation of score two means, and determining Ζ -ratio . The results of this research were as follows: based on the data gained from the result of test of two classes have significant different, it was indicated by the score gained from the experimental group students almost 53.3 % including into good category and 23.3 % students were in excellent category. Meanwhile, the score gained from the control group 33.3 % including into good category. Meanwhile, the table of questionnaire showed almost 93.3 % the respondents assure strip story can promote their speaking ability. The hypothesis that Ζ -ratio > T -Table that 2.68 >2.58 at .05 and .01 levels significant, the mean ( 29 1 M of the experimental group is greater than the mean ( 29 2 M of the control group ( 29 0 2 1 - M M , the null hypothesis (H o ) is rejected. Meanwhile the alternative hypothesis (H a ) is accepted. The writer assures that strip story is one of the effective speaking activities that can be applied in teaching speaking. Through the contribution of strip story, students have self confidence to communicate without fear of making mistakes to say something. Furthermore, strip story effective in creating a cooperative learning activity among students in doing the material. Finally, The writer’s great expectation that the result of this study useful in promoting students speaking ability.

TEXT A

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing and

receiving and processing information. As a matter of fact, most of students get difficulties in

speaking English such as; the students do not have self confidence to communicate, fear of making

mistakes, the feeling of having nothing to say something. This study attempted to know the

effectiveness of strip story in speaking activity. There are many speaking activities that can be

applied in teaching speaking such as: problem solving, brainstorming, strip story, story completion,

reporting etc. In this study, the writer comes up one of the speaking activities that is Strip Story. A

strip story is a short dialogue or story with each line typed onto a separate strip of paper. In a strip

story activity the learners are each given a sentence to memorize from a paragraph. They then must

tell their sentences to each other and decide whose sentence is first, second, and so on.

The hypothesis to be tested that there is significant difference means between two samples

using strip story and without strip story. The target of population is SMP Fatahillah Lohbener at the

second grade in the academic year 2006/2007. From the population of 466 students, the writer

selected 60 students of class VIII A and class VIII B as the research subject. This research

methodology is true experimental research, whereas the instrument of this research is measuring the

implementation strip story through test and questionnaire. The data analysis technique in this

research use inferential statistic technique by determining mean difference between two variables,

determining standard deviation of score two means, and determining Ζ-ratio.

The results of this research were as follows: based on the data gained from the result of test of

two classes have significant different, it was indicated by the score gained from the experimental

group students almost 53.3 % including into good category and 23.3 % students were in excellent

category. Meanwhile, the score gained from the control group 33.3 % including into good category.

Meanwhile, the table of questionnaire showed almost 93.3 % the respondents assure strip story can

promote their speaking ability. The hypothesis that Ζ-ratio > T-Table that 2.68 >2.58 at .05 and .01

levels significant, the mean ( )1M of the experimental group is greater than the mean ( )2M of the

control group ( )021 ≥−MM , the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Meanwhile the alternative

hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

The writer assures that strip story is one of the effective speaking activities that can be applied

in teaching speaking. Through the contribution of strip story, students have self confidence to

communicate without fear of making mistakes to say something. Furthermore, strip story effective

in creating a cooperative learning activity among students in doing the material. Finally, The

writer’s great expectation that the result of this study useful in promoting students speaking ability.
