The Stock Market Game™ in the Math Classroom
What is the SMG?
The Stock Market Game (SMG) is a ten-week simulation of Wall Street trading that provides a framework for teaching Utah students about the American economic system.
How Does it Work:
For ten weeks, during the fall and spring school semesters, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks on the New York and American Stock Exchanges and on the Nasdaq market. During the ten weeks, teams submit their transactions and receive daily portfolios highlighting their current holdings, brokerage fees, margin interest, and team ranking.
Twice a year, a free conference is held at the Homestead Resort in Midway, Utah to help introduce teachers to the Stock Market Game. This training will help you become more familiar with the game. You can also go to http://www.stockmarketgame.org to learn more about the program.

Students who participate in the program gain confidence and build self-esteem. They have fun — and learn more effectively as they see how their classroom lessons apply to the real world.
What Students Will Gain:
The game not only reinforces many mathematical concepts, but it is a real-life application of everyday math. The game also teaches critical thinking and problem solving.

IMPROVEMENTS IN MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE
Students who played The Stock Market Game scored significantly higher on mathematics tests than their peers who did not play the game.

Students are not the only ones to benefit from exposure to The
Stock Market Game.Teachers of The Stock Market Game reported that the program influenced their financial practices. In a nationwide survey conducted as part of the study, many teachers reported that they were influenced to set financial goals, analyze their risk tolerance, read the business section of the newspaper, and watch financial programs as a result of teaching the game.
