TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEMS Hyundai - 2007-08 Entourage & Santa Fe DESCRIPTION & OPERATION TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR (TPM) SYSTEM The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system monitors the air pressure in the 4 road tires with wheel-mounted tire pressure sensors. To do this, the system uses a receiver (available in low-line and high-line versions), 4 Radio Frequency (RF) tire pressure sensors, 2 warning indicators on the instrument cluster (3 on high line systems), and a data circuit to perform system functions. Vehicles with high line systems also include 4 Low Frequency Initiators (LFIs). When tire pressure is below the allowed threshold or a rapid leak is detected, the low pressure warning light on the instrument cluster will be illuminated. On vehicles with a high line system, a tire location light will also illuminate to indicate the faulty tire. If the system detects a receiver or sensor fault, or if it detects a fault that is external to the receiver or sensor, the TPMS warning indicator on the instrument cluster will be illuminated. If the fault is considered "critical", the light will stay on throughout the entire ignition cycle. The tire pressure sensor operates in 2 modes: stationary/rolling mode and sleep mode. In stationary/rolling mode, the sensor will measure pressure and temperature every 4 seconds, and measure acceleration every 60 seconds. High line sensors transmit data every 60 seconds while awake. In sleep mode, the sensor enters a low current consumption state where no measurements are made in order to conserve battery power. All sensors are in this state when new. The sensor will not transmit unless requested to do so by the initiate command or when vehicle accelerates to 20 MPH (32 KM/H). High line sensors return to sleep mode if it receives no signals and the tire remains stationary for 10 minutes. The LFI available on high line systems enables receiver to determine the vehicle position of each tire pressure sensor. When vehicle is first turned on, the receiver activates the LFIs (located in each wheel well) to wake up the tire pressure sensors and get wheel status. While key is on, the LFIs are activated every 10 minutes to keep tire pressure sensors awake. RESET PROCEDURES TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR WARNING INDICATORS NOTE: If tire pressure sensor is replaced, it will need to be initiated. See TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR INITIATION . The TPM system is not affected by wheel and tire rotation. NOTE: Tire pressure is also dependent on temperature of the tire. For every 18°F (10°C) increase in tire temperature, tire pressure increases about 1.5 psi (10 kPa). Tire pressure should only be adjusted when tires are cold (about the same as ambient air temperature). 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEMS Hyundai - 2007-08 Entourage & Santa Fe

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR (TPM) SYSTEM

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system monitors the air pressure in the 4 road tires with wheel-mounted tire pressure sensors.

RESET PROCEDURES

TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR WARNING INDICATORS

NOTE: If tire pressure sensor is replaced, it will need to be initiated. See TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR INITIATION.

When the low tire pressure warning light comes on, check the air pressure of all tires and adjust to the specified cold pressure listed on vehicle certification label (found on driver's door or door pillar). If tire is damaged, repair as necessary. Ensure the warning light goes off (this may take up to 4 minutes if the tire is not rapidly re-inflated).

If the warning light stays on, recheck tire pressure. If tire pressure is okay, turn wheel a quarter turn and wait another 4 minutes (the sensor may be in an RF null). If the warning light is still on or if the TPMS warning indicator is lit, there is a malfunction in the TPM system. See appropriate manufacturer service information.

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR INITIATION

1. Holding TPMS exciter within 3" (76 mm) of the sensor valve, read each tire pressure sensor ID in the following order: front left, front right, rear left, then rear right.

2. Connect TPMS exciter to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. Register the 4 sensor IDs to receiver. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 .

3. Disconnect TPMS exciter from diagnostic link. Cycle ignition and wait 4 minutes. Ensure "NORMAL RECEIVER STATE" is now displayed.

NOTE: In the following procedure, a TPMS exciter scan tool must be used.

NOTE: If tire pressure sensor is replaced, it will need to be initiated. The TPM system is not affected by wheel and tire rotation.

NOTE: Do not perform this procedure if vehicle is parked on a metal floor, roof, or on an alignment rack or lift. The metal will transfer the RF signals, which can cause the learn procedure to fail and set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

DISMOUNTING/MOUNTING PROCEDURES

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR

Removal

1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

2. Deflate tire and remove balance weights. The tire bead should be broken about 180 degrees from the valve side of the wheel. The bead breaker should not be set too deep. Dismount should end near the valve.

3. While handling sensor with care, remove valve nut.

4. Discard the valve assembly.

Installation

1. Assemble valve to sensor, and turn valve 3 times with the square part of the screw in the slot. See Fig. 3.

CAUTION: The tire should be dismounted from the wheel using the tire changer manufacturer's instructions. Use the following information to avoid damage during the dismounting/mounting procedures.

CAUTION: Ensure that the wheel to be fitted is designed for sensor mount. There should normally be a mark to indicate this.

NOTE: If tire pressure sensor is replaced, it will need to be initiated. See TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR INITIATION under RESET PROCEDURES. The TPM system is not affected by wheel and tire rotation.

CAUTION: Do not use puncture repair fluid, as this can cause sensor pressure port to block and an incorrect warning to occur.

CAUTION: Avoid tire/tool contact with the valve while dismounting tire.

CAUTION: The valve nut should not be re-used.

CAUTION: Avoid bringing tire pressure sensor in contact with lubricant. Always handle tire pressure sensor carefully.

2. Ensure that valve hole and mating face of the wheel are clean. Mount assembly to wheel. The fit should not be tight (i.e., it should still be possible to easily adjust valve angle).

3. Tighten washer and nut by hand until the valve thread meets the nut built-in calibrated stop.

4. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nut to 31-40 INCH lbs. (3.5-4.5 N.m). It is normal to feel a break as the 20 INCH lbs. (2.3 N.m) calibrated stop in the nut snaps and the torque falls. Increase torque smoothly in order to achieve a clean break of the stop.

5. Lubricate tire bead (not the rim). Do not use excessive lubrication.

CAUTION: Ensure the sensor feet are against the wheel throughout the remainder of the assembly process.

CAUTION: Ensure the grommet remains in contact with the wheel.

CAUTION: While tightening nut, do not exceed allowed torque. Do not use electric or pneumatic tools.

6. Start tire mounting about 5.9" (15 cm) from valve. Move mounting tool away from the valve. Avoid tire/tool contact with valve. Finish with mounting tool near to valve.

7. Adjust inflation pressure of all wheels. Install valve cap.

8. If installing a new sensor, initiate tire pressure sensor. See TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR INITIATION under RESET PROCEDURES.
