Chesapeake Bay colonies
• Virginia Company received a royal charter & founded Jamestown. 1607, 1st permanent English settlement.
• 1632, proprietary colony founded by the Calverts, the Lords Baltimore, Catholics, now Maryland.

Chesapeake colonies• In addition to subsistence crops, colonists
primarily grew a cash-producing crop for export: tobacco.
• different forms of government & settlement in VA & MD, but
common geography & climate created similar economies.
who settled Chesapeake (Maryland & Virginia colonies)?
• ¾ of all English migrants to the Chesapeake came as indentured servants.
• In 17th c, slavery was more expensive & thus less common.
Massachusetts – religious dissenters from the Church of England
• Pilgrims – separate, form own societies.
• Puritans – purify the church.
• Both came in families to settle permanently.

• Indians attempted to use colonists to further their own goals, often in conflicts with other indigenous peoples.
• Indians typically ensured survival of 1st colonists. • Diseases from Europe ravaged Indian
populations.• Warfare between Indians & colonists in 17th
century in Spanish & English, but not French, colonies. French primarily traded w Indians.
Unique characteristics of British colonies
• Families & permanent settlement.• Wanted land from Indians for more settlers.• Less motivated by Christianizing the Native
people than Catholic Spain & France.• British Civil War, Puritan Commonwealth,
execution of king, restoration of monarchy.• Communities excluded Indians, as compared
to French & Spanish, which included Indians.
