Introduction to a Zero Waste Foodservice Operation
Biorenew and Zero Waste Systems Providing green solutions and support ,whilst turning waste into a resource and revenue!

• We at Biorenew want to continue to pack your food in Natural Packaging.
• At Biorenew we want the packaging to be natural and turned into a resource, not end up in the landfill.
• Packaging made from sunlight,CO2 and water is what we offer to complement your great foods.
• We at Bio Renew are changing the approach to Packaging and Waste!
Our Philosophy at Bio Renew
Why Keep Organic Material Out of the Landfill?
• The conversion of plastic food packaging to bio-packaging removes a significant additional fraction from the waste stream which is discarded food. When uneaten and wasted foods is discarded it is usually mixed with plastics and being too costly to separate it is sent directly to the landfill. In the landfill, organic waste breaks down under anaerobic conditions producing methane which has twenty three (23) times the greenhouse gas effect compared to carbon dioxide.

Turn Waste into Revenues!
• Nature operates according to a system of nutrients and metabolisms in which there is no such thing as waste. All of the materials that were defined as waste become a resource.
• A zero waste approach increases the quality of the environment, increases revenues and replenishes the eco-system while nourishing the supply chain.
• Sustainability requires an organisation to continue to evolve and protect itself from outside influences. In this way it can better serve its community and customers while in pursuit of corporate goals such as profit and sustainability.
• Sustainability not only involves respecting our environment but fair treatment in the production of goods and growing profits now and into the future.

Biorenew is changing the way you will think and act about
packaging and waste• “Humans are the only species on this planet
that produces waste that cannot be reused or assimilated back into the natural environment”.
• We are the innovators of new and existing practices and the inventors of new packaging.
• All our packaging looks the same as existing petrochemical products. In fact, it’s so good and completely natural you could almost eat it!

The Approach
• Change waste into a useful resource at your operation• All packaging, excess food, containers, napkins,
desserts containers, coffee cups and lids, condiment containers, juice and breakfast items are to be made from a bio-based material
• All items, including cardboard containers, are placed into the on-site composting unit
• All discarded or used items will be placed through a one-step patterned system to be composted on-site, then returned to earth as fertiliser

Rough Estimated Waste Data
• Paper / Cardboard 10% • Other 9%• Non-operation waste 3%• Cups (plastic and paper) 7% • Post-consumer food 7%• Prep Food 12%• Unsold Food >5%• Ops Supplies 15%• Paper and other items brought into the store 19%• Plastic including some PLA Items 14%• Existing organic material should be greater than
60% perfect for a journey to Zero Waste!

Types of Packaging Currently Used
Foodservice operations usually have an opportunity to adhere to the following practices when dealing with packaging:
• Reduce: Quantity and components of packaging.• Recycle: Distribution packaging through third party collection.• Reuse: Distribution packaging if not food contaminated and compost.• Recover: Waste through litter patrols and third party collection.
Packaging Materials used by your operations include:• Cardboard – standard• Cardboard – spoilt• Paper - standard• Paper – and aluminium packs• Plastic – Type 1 (PET/PLA)• Plastic – Type 5 (PP/PLA)• Plastic – Type 6 (PS)• PLA compost

• According to Keep Australia Beautiful Week Campaign Director, Lara Shannon, “Nationally over a third of the waste households throw away is organic food and green waste, which could have instead been avoided or composted, rather than sent to landfill where it produces 23 times more greenhouse gases.
• “Food waste also represents over 25% of the total commercial/industrial waste and is the highest contributor to landfill for this sector, so this Australian-first initiative may provide us with some insights on how to tackle this issue at a wider level.
• “It also enables people to dispose of waste responsibly outside the home and in an environment where it has not been possible before.
• “It is commendable whenever a commercial business takes on the big challenge of changing their infrastructure and practices in the interest of the environment. It involves the buy-in of many people – from management, staff and suppliers right through to the customers who ultimately will be making the choice of how they dispose of their waste”, Shannon added.

What Does Zero Waste Meanfor your Operation?
• Zero Waste is an ideal and also an imperative that will become more pressing as our usage of natural resources increases and the output of toxic and destructive by-products increases and land diminishes for landfill sites.
• It is the collection and capture on-site of all packaging and left over food to be completely return to nature as fertiliser.
• It also includes the excess paper and cardboard being used to package the outer boxes.

Your operations system needs to be carefully designed to:
• increase opportunistic reuse or materials made from Bio-based materials
• design materials with multiple life re-use• design materials that integrate with organic processes• exercise a duty of care for post use materials• remove designed and perceived obsolescence from
products.• provides incentives for producers and users to recover
materials• provide better facilities to implement material recovery• emphasis waste prevention before disposal• inform, educate and inspire people to more ecological
behaviour• and is ready for application now!

Zero Waste Site
• As one of earths’ oldest processes, composting is the most effective means of stabilising and converting biodegradable waste. The rich by-product is therefore safe and replenishes nature so that it can sustain a growing population. If this process is implemented properly, it will not only improve the environment and reduce pollution, it can replace an expensive and hazardous waste stream with a very valuable product.
• The compost can also serve as a new and lucrative revenue stream.

Waste Reduction
Heat generated in the ZWCC rapidly breaks down the food scraps. The volume reduction is typically 80% or higher. After 24 hours of active composting, the discharge doors are opened and the scraper pushes the compost out as it rotates past the discharge door.
Key Features•• Easy to operate•• Rapid process reduces volume quickly•• Heavy-duty Stainless Steel construction•• Minimal need for bulking agent if at all•• Short time required for mixing/loading•• Insulated for cold weather operation•• Thorough compost mixing• Low energy costs to operate

The ZERO WASTE COMMERCIAL COMPOSTER ( ZWCC)
• The ZWCC is designed specifically for on-site composting of food wastes and bio-based materials, packaging & cardboard/paper.
• ZWCC is a fully enclosed & automated composting vessel featuring power mixing, compost aeration of all process air.
• It is a self contained unit and is ideal for composting at each restaurant.
• We would look to sell the compost at each restaurant.
