IntroductionCandidates often consider an interview the first step in getting a jobIn reality, creating a rsum that lands that interview is the first step Your rsum is your chance toshowcase your abilities, achievements, & passionsdemonstrate your fit for the opening

Tip 1:Prove Yourself with Concise SimplicityMake your most valuable traits readable in a single glance you have 30 seconds to make a lasting first impression

Use bullet points instead of dense paragraphsdo not over-shorten, making achievements choppydo not eliminate all emotion

Use abbreviations only when industry standards if unsure, spell-out the words

Tip 1:Prove Yourself with Concise SimplicityUse a single common, sans serif fontsuch as Arial or Calibriall black text

Use italics, bold, and underlining sparinglyonly when it improves readability call attention only to points worth stressing

Tip 1:Prove Yourself with Concise SimplicityHow you list your work history depends on you

If most of your history is relevant to the joblist your past positions chronologically

If only some of your history is relevantlist important positions firstlist other positions chronologically under a new heading lower down

Draw attention to recent jobs and achievements

Tip 2:Create Content that MattersCreate a master rsum that lists your complete historydraft shorter rsums for each job, with only relevant positions

Show how past jobs required similar skills to the job at hand

Many employers use software to pre-screen rsums ensure vital keywords are present in your rsum use words & phrases from the job description as a starting point

Tip 2:Create Content that MattersUse power words & carefully selected phrasesDONT SAY Managed a team of six programmers SAY Maximized ROI by maintaining open collaboration among programmers

Do not try to hide weaknesses with slippery wordingmanagers know words can be manipulated to be misleading

Do not make your accomplishments difficult to decipher

Tip 3:Remember that Results SellQuantify results to compliment your achievements DONT SAY Increased operations efficiency SAY Reduced materials costs by 6% and increased labor efficiency by 8%, year over year. Do not use numbers instead of detailing your skills

Tip 3:Remember that Results SellNever fabricate results or alter numbers DONT SAY Increased turn-over by 25% when it was only 22.3%SAY Decreased turn-over by more than 20%

Round numbers when appropriatemore memorable & conserves space

Tip 3:Remember that Results SellList only your highest awards & honors on your rsum a string of minor recognitions means little

A list of old awards makes you look past your primeconsider dropping your oldest honors from your rsumanything older than 5 years probably shouldnt be listed

Tip 4:Speak to Your AudienceCreate rsums that match the job level & position make the position feel like a natural fit to hiring managers

Do not focus on skills that are below your levelif applying to be a java developerdont highlight PowerPoint skills if applying to be an accountant dont highlight Photoshop skills

Tip 4:Speak to Your AudienceUncover the companys primary needsidentify the positions requirementsinvestigate other open positions research the company and its products

Convey your ability to meet these needs in your rsum

Infuse personal character into your rsum

Tip 5:Rules Are Meant to be BrokenSources offer unique & conflicting rsum advice Which advice you take is a judgment callGo with your gut, or ask a trusted friend to decide for you

Tip 5:Rules Are Meant to be BrokenMany people hear advice about number of pages in a rsum there is no set ruleyour rsum should be as long as your relevant details support 2-3 pages is normal for experienced professionalsremember, every page after the first will get less attention
