Getting to Know Literacy Learners, P–3 (Week 2 Application)

The Motivation to Read Profile (MRP) consists of two parts—a self reporting survey, which is administered in groups, and an individual Conversational Interview.

The survey assesses two dimensions of reading motivation:

Student readers’ self concepts and how students value reading.While the interview explores individual aspects of students’ motivation to read, such as personal interests in reading.

II. Selecting Texts (Week 3 Application)

According to the article, “A Guide to Selecting Great Informational Books for Young Children”, I should be examining books for five main characteristics.

These five characteristics are the cover, topic or content, illustration, font size and type, and organization. (Stephens, 2008)

Janice Almasi spoke of the difficulty of a text and how it plays an important part of a child’s literacy development.

“Stop, Drop, and Roll”, written by Margery Cuyler and Arthur Howard is a great information text that teaches students proper procedure for a fire emergency.

III. Literacy Lesson: Interactive Perspective (Week 5 Application)

Students use both cognitive and metacognitive strategies to direct their thinking. (Tompkins, 2010, p. 12)

The lesson, “What are they doing?, is a fun way to get students thinking quickly. They use their thoughts to effectively communicate to others through writing.

Writing is a tool that is just as important as reading.

If you cannot read, you cannot write. To effectively master the English language, you must be able to do both.

“When students write about what they’re learning, it helps them become better writers, and teachers can use students’ writing to assess their learning.” (Armbuster, McCarthy, & Cummings, 2005, p. 300)

IV. Literacy Lesson: Critical and Response Perspectives (Week 6 Application)

I created a more critical and response perspective towards selecting text by picking text that pertained to social and cultural issues that my students could relate to and was dealing with everyday.

To encourage students to be life literacy readers, they must experience the power of critical and response perspective selected text. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011)

I decided to use Dr. Seuss’s, “The Sneetches and other stories”, because of its wonderful humor and its ingenious way of teaching cultural diversity and discrimination.

This book is considered a critical and response perspective selected text. It challenges the reader to experience feelings that they may have never experienced if they had not read the text. (Laureate Education Inc., 2011)
