It’s essential to make sure it makes an impact and gives a clear and concise description of what you have done and more importantly can do for a potential employer. It’s a marketing tool and may be the only thing a new employer will know about you before meeting you for an interview. It’s the way to get your foot in the door, at which point you can show more of your personality and flesh out your experience. I assume that the basics are already there but you must include name, address and contact details, details of relevant qualifications, key achievements, work history and some information about your hobbies and interests. Work in reverse chronological order, for both qualifications and experience, employers are more interested in what you’re doing now than what you were doing 5 and certainly 20 years ago. Most important of all, it must be tailored to the job you’re ap- plying for. You need to be able to modify it so that relevant qualifi- cations, experience and quantifi- able achievements are included. By showing what you did, how you did it and the outcomes, you can show what value you can bring to a new employer. This is much more powerful than a list of roles and responsibilities and the more relevant you can make it, the more impact it will have with a potential employer. They will want to know the skills and qualities you can of- fer, backed up by clearly laid out achievements describing some of your previous successes. Remember though that a CV is a personal document. There are standard formats and template documents that you can fill in but even if it’s just the informa- tion about your interests at the end of the CV, make sure that the CV reflects something of your personality.
