What makes our life independent and meaningful?

making decisions in the own interest and having right to make both good and bad choices, taking responsibilities ( feeling that it’s myself who rules my life, neither other people nor the situation)

Having relations also these intimate ones (loving and being loved)

Contributing to the society (taking and giving)

living independently; enjoying full inclusion and integration in the economic, political, social, cultural and educational mainstream of society

Work, home, money, leisure time, family and friends

Page 9: Caravan 2000 Bernau 3.02.2011

What does it mean I have an influence?

I am given a chance to decide about: who I come into relationship with and what kind of

relationship it is, what work I have, what support I get and who is providing it, where I live and who with, how I spend my free time and who with,

I am listened and I have a say,I am able to get to any place

I would like to,I am informed in a way

I can understand, I can vote and practice my religion,

The Five Principles of Appreciative Inquiry

The Constructionist Principle (Words create worlds - positive questions lead to positive change)- what people focus on becomes their reality, the language people use creates their reality. Appreciative Inquiry therefore takes particular care to encourage a positive focus and encourages the use of positive language. Language and metaphors we use don’t just describe the world, they actually create the world

The Positive Principle (In every system, something works) - focusing on the positive can lead to effective change and the positive language leads to the positive effects. The members of the organisation are supported to express the best that they have experienced

The Simultaneity Principle ( Inquiry creates change) there is no separate ‘diagnosis’ phase; no time is spent looking at root causes or holding inquests into the past. Instead, the change is seen as starting as soon as the steering group gets together to start asking each other appreciative questions.

The Poetic Principle (Organisations are more as a story than a state). Appreciative Inquiry encourages the sharing of positive stories, believing that this will itself change the way people think and act.

The Anticipatory Principle ( Image inspires action) - images of the future can affect the way we behave in the present. In particular, if we have a particularly desirable image of the future we are likely to behave in ways that will bring it about.
