Here’s how you can meet your jurisdiction’s requirements in a way that fits your lifestyle.
Take Advantage of the Flexible, Accessible Architect Registration Examination • Take the ARE in any order, at any time,
virtually anywhere
• Extensions are available
• New retake policy
o From six months to 60 days!
Take the ARE While Completing Internship • Early eligibility available in 49 jurisdictions
• Eligibility requirements vary
Currently not available in:
Begin IDP After High School and Earn Credit During Breaks • Earn IDP experience straight out of high school
• No duration requirement
• Interns can now earn credit beyond six months
Use the IDP Mobile App
• Log hours on-the-go with our free iPhone app

Earn Supplemental Experience
• Great way to earn IDP credit outside of the office
• Allows interns to take control, be proactive

1. Site Visit With Mentor
• Visit construction site with architect
• Review and discuss site drawings
• Interaction with construction industry

2. Emerging Professional’s Companion (EPC)
• Earn up to 600 core hours of IDP credit
• Includes 17 chapters that align with the IDP’s experience categories
• Each activity worth eight (8) hours
• www.epcompanion.org
3. Professional Conduct Monograph
• Earn 16 core hours in Business Operations
• Read monograph and pass a quiz
• Available for free in NCARB Record
4. Design Competitions • Building or planning project
• Outside of a recognized experience setting or academic requirement
5. CSI Certifications & Certificate Program • CSI Certified Construction Specifier (CCS)
• CSI Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA)
6. Community-Based Design Center/Collaborative • Volunteer service
• Organization must have 501(c)(3) status
• Organization must be pre-approved by NCARB before the experience occurs

• Teaching or research in NAAB- or CACB-accredited program
• “Swinging the hammer”
Teaching or Research 1,860 hours maximum
