Highly Effective Ways to Prevent Burnout

Burnout is a problem for individuals who function in high-stress environments, such as a hospital emergency room, or in other fast-paced jobs.

A burnout can cause severe physical and emotional problems if stress is not managed on a regular basis.

Understanding Burnout

A burnout is not just a feeling of fatigue from working too hard.

It’s a condition in which the individual begins to experience unusual mental and emotional symptoms, due to factors that may be out of his or her control.

The workplace may not offer sufficient support for employees. There may be a lack of appreciation for work that is well done.

The workplace may have communication problems, or may be under a great deal of pressure to produce results.

A number of signs and symptoms are common in people who are experiencing burnout on the job:

Feelings of helplessness and inability to make things better

The Cure for Burnout

One of best ways to prevent burnout is to monitor your physical and emotional condition on a regular basis and take action to refresh your body and spirit.

For many people, this may mean a few days away from work with family to reconnect to essential relationships and put their work into perspective.

For other people, counseling may be in order, to help resolve inner conflicts about their place of employment or other issues in their lives.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Poor sleep quality can also be a sign that an individual is beginning to experience a burnout.

If your sleep habits have suffered in recent months, take active steps to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.

This plan should include:

Eating light before bedtime

Avoiding alcohol and nicotine, which can interfere with sleep.

Ensuring that your sleeping quarters are comfortable and dark.

Instituting a nighttime ritual to help signal your body and mind that it’s time for relaxation and rest.

Eat A Healthy Diet

A fast-paced work environment can work against eating a healthy diet.

Take extra care in ensuring that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole grains to provide the right nutrition to combat stress.

Exercise Regularly

If you lack the time to go to the gym, set up a home gym so that you can get the exercise you need to relieve stress and improve your general physical condition.

Pace Yourself To Accomplish Goals

A thorough review of your work schedule can help you to prioritize tasks in a more effective way, so that you can avoid burnout.

Learning to pace yourself in a realistic manner can help to increase your effectiveness, while reducing your everyday stress.
