WHY YOU AIN’T GETTING HIRED… If you are getting to the interview part of finding employment but, it is going sideways from there. This means that you are doing OK on your application and/or in showcasing your skills in writing. The real problem is that you are not doing as well in person as you do on

paper. This part of the process can be hurtful and painful because it means that you are the problem. It could be simple or you may need a complete facelift of how you are presenting yourself. While we would like to point the blame elsewhere and it is really easier to not take responsibility, we must be open to the idea that it wasn’t that they didn’t like me but rather, I gave them no reason to like me. There are three basic interview personalities that determine how we present ourselves. The first is the “BRAGGER.” This is the person who not only knows that they are the best but, never fails to take every opportunity to beat us over the head with that fact. They use the “I” word almost exclusively (never bringing others into the conversation other than to explain how he/she corrected the mistakes) and who can always top any achievement by others. These are the type that always know better and are not afraid to let you know. They believe that they do not see a need to do any homework about the company as their skills are so great (they believe that the company should want to know about them). The “SHY ONE” is the major interviewee group and these are the people who are shy, quiet and almost introverted to the point of that they need a “BRAGGER” to come and speak for them. They are the total opposite of the “BRAGGER” in that they do not speak up; almost never want to expand beyond “yes or no” answers and they are almost never recalled later by the interviewer other than quite or odd or a combination of both. The final is the “I AM GETTING THIS JOB” group that truly wants the job(s) that they are applying for, they have done their homework on what skills/abilities that the specific employer

Page 3: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

needs/wants and they have made themselves an expert on who the company is and what they do. This group prides themselves on their ability to showcase themselves as a “turnkey” solution to what the employer truly needs. They use the word “WE” a lot to talk about achievements as they understand that most companies are very much into team/group dynamics. They will use phrases like: “My group achieved an increase of over 20% in productivity in 2013 and within the group; my role in my group’s success was to do _____________...” Most consistently, it is this third group that goes to work as they are remembered as being friendly, knowledgeable, and the most skilled and a seemed like a very good team player. The hopefulness of this situation is that no one is locked into any of these groups and we all have the ability to reinvent ourselves to become successful. =============================================================

40 undisputed reasons why you didn’t get the job

FROM THE DESK OF Yuda Nee Tobeakidin, Ph.D. Workforce Specialist Dr. Tobeakidin is a well-known employer surveyor in the new, entry level job market…

1. There were far better qualified candidates than you - which means to Dr. Tobeakidin that you are applying at the wrong level in your career field and by dropping down a level or two might help you secure employment. 2. You were forgettable; nothing was memorable about you 3. Your eyes and pockets were bigger than your skills. Your demands were unreasonable and they don’t match your interview performance 4. You oversold your skills on your CV/Résumé and you cannot showcase how you utilized any of the skills in the past 5. You lacked enthusiasm from the onset of the interview to the end. Enthusiasm is contagious. If you show some excitement over the possibility of working with your interviewer, your interviewer is likely to feel the same way about you

Page 4: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

6. You failed to establish your worth or verbally demonstrate the value you add to any organization 7. Your online reputation is bad. That picture of you kicking it with your ‘homies’, the gang sign gesture you made and gun touting weren’t cool. Frankly, that picture lost you a job 8. You wanted to know what’s in the job for you and not what you can bring on board 9. You were one-word-answer Alison or Andy. ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ were great answers as far as you were concerned 10. You stretched the truth just a tad in your CV/Résumé as you could not back some of your accomplishments up 11. You fancied the interviewer more than you fancied getting the job 12. You were too big for your boots as you huffed and puffed on the day 13. You were simply not as qualified as you claimed 14. You sucked big time at interview techniques 15. You thought you were the best thing since sliced bread was invented 16. You were too experienced for them and they were afraid of your knowledge and ambition 17. The interviewers sucked at picking the best candidate for their organization or any organization 18. They already have someone in mind before they interviewed you 19. Your CV/Résumé outshone you by miles 20. You didn’t mince your words about the outdated deco in their office or their substandard product 21. You lacked the drive to research the organization in advance and unable to answer at least one question about them 22. You appeared too desperate for the role. Offering to tattoo their logo on your chest is not the way to show enthusiasm

Page 5: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

23. You simply never stopped talking during the interview 24. You were a big fan of the words um, like, totally, yeah, nah, em and riiight. 25. You had no questions even though they asked you five times during the interview; you never seized the opportunity to ask them clever questions once 26. They thought you were ‘Sloppy Joe’ because you looked like someone who just rolled off the bed and dragged through the hedges to attend the interview 27. With your sweaty limp handshake and your slouchy shoulders, the first impression you gave was terrible 28. You wanted to know how much you will be paid before you left the interview 29. You asked for the number of sick days allowed during the interview 30. Asking if they drug tested or credit checked their employees made you lose the gig 31. Focusing more on the perks than the role wasn’t cool 32. Bad mouthing your former manager made them think you’d bad mouth them too to another employer 33. Your handshake, eye contact and general body language were nothing to write home about 34. You failed spectacularly at answering a lot of commonly asked interview questions 35. You were overly ambitious so they thought you would leave in no time to pursue another job 36. You are a flaming job hopper; you change jobs like you change clothes 37. You lack self confidence; you couldn’t even maintain eye contact with the interviewers

Page 6: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

38. You are not Social Media savvy; you shared everything on Social Media. Sharing your escapades on the day you called in sick while you were at the pub made you look bad. Social Media is more media than it is social when job searching 39. Weaknesses? You scratched your head, looked up and owned up to none. No one is perfect. We all have areas we’d like to strengthen. Answering the “what are your weaknesses” question the wrong way was a risky move 40. You failed to “Tell them about yourself” when they asked you. The paper-boy job you did twenty years ago wasn’t the information they needed from you.

How many of these have you done? The great thing is that all of these are correctable and then, there will be 40 less reasons why you didn’t get that job. Re-inventing yourself is easy and has great benefit to making you employable even in a tough job market. What do you have to lose other than unemployment?

SO you didn’t get the job? FROM THE DESK OF Yuda Nee Tobeakidin, Ph.D. Workforce Specialist Dr. Tobeakidin is a well-known employer surveyor in the new, entry level job market…

Dr. Tobeakidin conducted a survey of top personnel executives in 100 major American corporations asking them for stories of unusual behavior demonstrated by job applicants to reveal the following low-lights: 1. Stretched out on the floor to fill out the job application. 2. She wore a Walkman and said she could listen to me and the music at the same time. 3. A balding candidate abruptly excused himself. Returned to office a few minutes later, wearing a hairpiece. 4. Asked to see interviewer's resume to see if the personnel executive was qualified to judge the candidate. 5. Announced she hadn't had lunch and proceeded to eat a hamburger and French fries in the interviewer's office - wiping the ketchup on her sleeve. 6. Stated that, if he were hired, he would demonstrate his loyalty by having the corporate logo tattooed on his forearm.'' 7. ''Interrupted to phone his therapist for advice on answering specific interview questions. 8. When I asked him about his hobbies, he stood up and started tap dancing around my office. 9. At the end of the interview, while I stood there dumbstruck, went through his briefcase, took out a brush, brushed his hair, and left.

Page 23: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

10. Pulled out a Polaroid camera and snapped a flash picture of me. Said he collected photos of everyone who interviewed him. 11. Said he wasn't interested because the position paid too much. 12. While I was on a long-distance phone call, the applicant took out a copy of Penthouse, and looked through the photos only, stopping longest at the centerfold. 13. During the interview, an alarm clock went off from the candidate's brief case. He took it out, shut it off, apologized and said he had to leave for another interview. 14. A telephone call came in for the job applicant. It was from his wife. His side of the conversation went like this: '''Which company? When do I start? What's the salary?' I said, 'I assume you're not interested in conducting the interview any further.' He promptly responded, 'I am as long as you'll pay me more.' I didn't hire him, but later found out there was no other job offer. It was a scam to get a higher offer. 15. His attaché [case] opened when he picked it up and the contents spilled, revealing ladies' undergarments and assorted makeup and perfume. 16. Candidate said he really didn't want to get a job, but the unemployment office needed proof that he was looking for one. 17. Asked who the lovely babe was, pointing to the picture on my desk. When I said it was my wife, he asked if she was home now and wanted my phone number. I called security. 18. Pointing to a black case he carried into my office, he said that if he was not hired, the bomb would go off. Disbelieving, I began to state why he would never be hired and that I was going to call the police. He then reached down to the case, flipped a switch and ran. No one was injured, but I did need to get a new desk. ==============================================================

USED JOB SHACK INSIDER Sales Associate (Seasonal) I applied online and the process took 6 days Interview Details –I applied on the website and received the standard “impressive application" email requesting an interview. I chose the closer of

the two dates described on the email and showed up at 12:40 for my 1:00 interview. I was told to wait outside the store at the couches. i soon noticed two other sharply dressed individuals that i was correct in assuming that they were also there for the interview, we waited together for about ten past years and then the interview began, it was simple quick, and nearly effortless, my advice is to read what is said on this website it honestly helps with the interview process. After the first interview a second manager came out and asked some questions about scheduling.

Page 35: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

I then signed a release for a background check and then went on my way. As I got home I checked my email and there was the ethics survey link in my email. It was straightforward and there was no objective choice, read it but don’t take forever. I completed the survey/interview on Thursday and then received a phone call from the manager offering me a position. ============================================================= Sales Associate Interview - Applied online and the process took 3 weeks Interview Details –I applied online to a new store opening in my area. A couple of weeks later, I received an interview stating that they were holding essentially walk-in interviews at a local hotel, in a window of a few hours. I went there dressed in Urban Outfitters apparel (greyish shorts and a coral button-down with some knock-off Tom's) and interviewed one-on-one (it probably would have been a group interview, but no other candidates were there at the time) with one of the ladies who was there. Some of the questions were:

• Tell of a time you had good customer service. • Who or what is your inspiration? • Tell a few things about yourself or how would you describe

yourself? A week or two later, I got a call saying that I was hired. As it was a new store opening, they really needed workers to help out; therefore I don't quite know if I was actually successful at the interview or if they just hired me for the muscle. Interview Question –

• What would you do if you noticed a customer acting suspicious, as if they were about to steal?

---------------------------------------------------------------- Sales Associate Interview - Applied online and the process took 1+ week. Interview Details –I applied via their website online. About two+ weeks later, I got an email requesting an interview in their store. It was a group interview with 7 other people; they said they were looking for 3 or 4 people to hire, 5 tops. We were taken into the stock room and interviewed by one of the managers and another lead staff member. The questions were pretty basic even for someone like me who has never worked or interviewed for a retail store.

Page 36: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

QUESTION EXAMPLES: • Why Urban? • What is your dream job? • What is loss prevention/how to deal with it? • When have you gone against what a supervisor has told you

to do? • What trends do you see? • If we gave you $100 what would you buy? • Describe the last group work experience you had, etc.

Really casual and laid back, too. You didn't have to answer any of the questions if you didn't have a great answer for it; I think I answered all but one. After the interview, they told us they'd let us know about another interview in about two days, but when I got home I received an email for a second interview and also the online questionnaire. The questionnaire is really not as difficult as some reviewers are making it out to be. Just remember you are applying to work at a famous retail corporation and showing up to work high every day would not be acceptable.

Lots of questions about fairness in the workspace and drug use. Other than that it's really common sense. My second interview was a 1-on-1 with the manager. Also very casual, asked similar questions but more personal about who I am as a person and what I am looking for in a workplace and fellow employees. I could tell that they were already really interested in hiring me, showing how important it is to just be yourself in the first interview and definitely show your interest in fashion and specifically that you have the UO "look." After this interview I waited about 4 or 5 days and got a call in the evening offering me the job. I accepted over another job offer. Interview Question –

• What is something that most people don't know about you and that we can't figure out from your application or an online search?

Negotiation Details –No negotiations as I had no retail experience. Offered a little over minimum wage in my state.

Page 37: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

Sales Associate Interview - Scottsdale, AZ - I applied in-person and the process took 1 week. Interview Details – My interview experience with Urban was relatively simple. After filling out an application while visiting the store one day, I received a call the next day to come in for an interview. The interview was in group format with a total of 10 possible hires and 2 interviewers. The interview was very casual and consisted of the interviewers getting a real feel of who you are and if you'll fit in with the look and attitude of the company. They definitely prefer people that are interesting and have something going on with their lives. After the interview, I was called the evening of that same day and offered a position. I was one of only three people to be hired in that group. Interview Question –

• Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? ---------------------------------------------------------------- Sales Associate - I applied in-person and the process took 4+ weeks Interview Details – For such a basic retail job, I cannot imagine a more competitive experience. It all begins with a group interview. Dress to impress and moreover, dress the way you describe in your application. When I walked in, the manager noted that she recognized me based on my application description/ fashion inspiration. (Also, if you put something lame on your app like "I draw fashion inspiration from me" you're going to get an eye-roll and no one will take you seriously) The group interview begins and you are asked questions as a group; meaning you either have to speak up first or be prepared to give an answer that stands apart from the rest. Beware of repeating answers, even if you feel the same way. THEY ARE INTERESTED IN TWO THINGS: Number one, someone who really values customer service, but not in a generic way. Secondly, Urban wants individuals who are passionate and above all authentic. (A.K.A. Cool and knowledgeable.) Once you pass the dreaded group interview, they weed out the dummies through an oddly worded personality test. It's unlike those standard I agree/disagree tests, they are long-winded questions meant to test both your ethics and your reading ability.

Page 38: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

READ THEM CAREFULLY. I can't tell you how many smart people fail because they try to rush through it. If you make it past the personality test there will be a personal phone interview with the store manager, followed by an in-person interview where they will evaluate you further. Consider the fact that they don't want another suck-up, they want someone who can be cool and friendly at the same time. Interview Question –

• What is something you did in a past job that went against company standards?

SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATING THE COMPETENCY-BASED INTERVIEW By Fred J. Hecklinger, Ph.D., TSA Career Coach This article is a follow-up to last month’s guidelines on preparing for a competency-based interview. Because these interviews can be intimidating, it is important to plan how you will present yourself during the interview itself. Your accomplishments, your enthusiasm, and your potential for contributing to TSA at an increased level of responsibility can shine when you successfully navigate the interview. Navigating a structured, competency-based employment interview: 1. You should not assume that the evaluators are familiar with your education and work history. Therefore, you should use the interview as an opportunity to communicate your experience and any other information that relates to the position. Since you have prepared extensively for this, go into the interview with a strategy. It should be your goal to show the panel members or the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. 2. Respond to questions thoroughly using specific examples that demonstrate your qualifications.

Page 42: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

Use the Situation - Task – Action – Result technique: a. Situation or Task: Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a specific event or situation, not a generalized description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough detail for the interviewer to understand. This situation can be from a previous job, from a volunteer experience, or any relevant event. b. Action you took: Describe the action you took and be sure to keep the focus on you. Even if you are discussing a group project or effort, describe what you did, not the efforts of the team. Don’t tell what you might do. Tell what you did. c. Results you achieved: What happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn? 3. Make a positive impression. Look directly at the interviewer or panel members and smile. If possible, shake hands with the panel members or the interviewer. Keep an open posture (i.e., don’t cross your arms). Be attentive when the interviewer or each panel member speaks. Even though the panel members or interviewer may be taking notes, try to direct your responses first to the person who asked you the question and make eye contact whenever possible. 4. Show your enthusiasm for the position. In addition to answering the questions effectively, it should be your goal to demonstrate to the interviewer or panel members that you would be an effective team member, that you can be counted on to help out in dealing with special needs, and that you will be willing to take on additional responsibilities as needed to achieve the TSA’s goals. Try to avoid passively responding to questions or giving very brief answers (i.e., don’t just say “Yes, I can do that.” Give examples). 5. Show pride in your past performance. Be positive in sharing your skills and accomplishments. Remember your list of top priority accomplishments and experiences that are most relevant to the position and include them in your responses. 6. Listen carefully to each question and make sure you know what is being asked. If you are not certain, ask for clarification. Some questions may have several parts. You may want to make notes to remind yourself of the different parts of the question before you begin to answer the question. Note: The interview process for some positions may not permit the interviewees to take notes. Try to find out ahead of time whether you can take a pad of paper and a pen into the interview. After you have answered, you may wish to clarify with the interviewer or panel members that you have answered

Page 43: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

the question, especially if the question has several parts. A possible question would be: “Would you like me to expand on or clarify my answers to any of the sections of the question?” 7. Use positive language. Avoid can’t, don’t, and won’t. Do not bring up anything negative about your current or past jobs and employers. 8. Show a sincere interest in the needs of TSA and a willingness to meet those needs. If you have the opportunity to ask questions, demonstrate your interest by asking questions about TSA’s future needs, challenges, and goals. Even if the interviewer or panel members choose not to answer your question(s), you will still have expressed your interest in what you can do for the organization. Avoid asking self-serving questions about topics such as opportunities for promotion or when the hiring process might be completed. Do not bring up questions regarding pay, vacations, and benefits. You can find out that information later. 9. Be prepared to make a final statement if the interviewer(s) ask if you have anything that you would like to say or if they ask if you wish to make a statement. This is a golden opportunity for you to share your enthusiasm for the position, your readiness to make a contribution at the next level, your readiness for supervising and mentoring others, your commitment to the organization’s goals, your pride in your past performance, and your readiness to be a member of the team. We always hear that there are no construction jobs other than the same old group of repeat employers. Back in the day, you had two ways to find work, you could go from construction site to site in the early AM to introduce yourself to the foremen – which still works today but, the new generation sayz this is too much effort or you could be smart and start with public records

Page 47: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

(like above) to see who has been award new construction contracts with the city, county or state. These are companies that have a new project(s) and have money to spend. This is a good list of contractors to compile as these are mostly Federal projects and pay Federal Wages (usually double the rate). The trick is to turn this list into a means of finding out that does the hiring and how can I get in to see them. This requires a few phone calls to acquire this INTEL. YOU ARE NOT CALLING TO ASK “ARE YOU HIRING?” More than likely the person on the phone wouldn’t have a clue but, they would know who you need to talk to about getting a job. Instead you ask _________(they gave you their name when they answered the phone – ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION – IF YOU WERE, YOU WROTE THE NAME DOWN) who would I talk to about UPCOMING openings for your company as I have _____ years of experience as a _________. ============================================================

THE TRICK IS TO ESTABLISH A NEW LIST OF COMPANIES AND CONTRACTS Any time I am in need of work, it would be nice to have twenty, thirty contacts to get in touch with about a new job. Above we showed you how to get started. Here is the advanced course. The key is to develop your list, do your homework about what they do, what type of trades’ people they need (on a regular basis) and who I need to deal with. This boils everything down to one or two calls (or a visit) which saves me a ton of hitting every worksite in town. The trick is that I need to be cold, stone serious about this and actually be ready to start work tomorrow morning (no excuses or mulligans). I respect my leads to not call unless I am 100% “go to work” ready, they are very busy and I don’t want to lose the contacts that cost me so much time to cultivate. ============================================================

HERE IS A FREEBY! DID YOU KNOW ANY OF THESE CONTRACTORS? These are all local contractors who are bidding for a road construction with the county (public contract records search) generated this list. You mission is to take this list and turn

Page 48: IT’S THURSDAY NIGHT HERE AT THE USED JOB SHACK

it into a list of developed contacts…It’s on you, you need to start getting more pro-active in this job searching process if you want to be a winner instead of a victim.
