The Step by Step Mission Statement

Page 3: Mission Statement Reflection

The Step By Step mission statement is used to summarise and express the main aims and values of the organisation

Personally, I agree completely with Step By Step’s mission statement as I believe it ensures all of the needs of the child are being met and supported

Having written a teaching philosophy statement last year, I can see many similarities between my values and those of the organisation

The first value

Step By Step :

“Step by Step believes that every child is unique, has individual potential which we aim to develop” (Step By Step, n.d.).

My Teaching Philosophy Statement

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire” – W.B. Yeats

“Teaching, to me, is not only a profession, but a vocation. It is not suitable for everyone but I believe some people have an innate calling and gift. It can be a very rewarding experience to watch students grow to their full potential and be a guide during this process, but this requires hard-work and dedication.”

Second Value

Step By Step

“We provide holistic and confidential support for children and families in the Markets area” (Step By Step, n.d.).

My Teaching Philosophy Statement

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

“The overriding goal of my teaching is to enable my students to develop socially, emotionally, physically and mentally.”

Third Value

Step By Step

“We offer a safe, respectful and friendly environment instilling a sense of belonging and self worth in the child” (Step By Step, n.d.).

My Teaching Philosophy Statement

“Nine tenths of education is encouragement”- Anatole France

I embrace Rousseau’s belief that all students should be given a safe classroom environment which will allow them to express their opinions, worries and questions (Rousseau, 2007). My job is to provide a relaxed, interactive, healthy and supportive environment which will in turn encourage learning (Rogers & Horrocks, 2010). To cultivate a thriving atmosphere I intend to create a democratic environment whereby both teacher and students are equal and learn from each other. I will highlight the importance of community where all students are valued and deserve respect (Ormrod, 2014).

Why is a mission statement important?

Personally, I believe mission statements are very important in organisations as they allow for all employees to have a clear understanding of the values and aims within the organisation

Once these are established, every one can work simultaneously towards one specific goal.

In my opinion, if an organisation is faced with a challenge the mission statement can help and guide the employees to solve the problems.

Do Step By Step follow their mission statement?

Through my experience on my internship I believe the project workers in Step by Step work hard every day to ensure they follow the mission statement.

All of the children in the project are seen as valued and important members of society who deserve to be given opportunities to succeed in life.

Regarding the holistic development of the children, the workers aim to help the children to develop physically, socially, emotionally and mentally. This can be seen through the different six week programmes conducted in Step by Step.

The project workers in Step by Step also work hard to ensure the project is a safe ad friendly environment. Daily, the project workers welcome the children upon arrival and are always there to listen if the child wants to talk. Upon completing my eight week placement in Step by Step I found that most of the children in the project were happy and excited to attend weekly and felt it was a safe place to play.
