Once Upon A Time…

There lived a happily married man!

Page 3: "The Hammer", a fable

He lived with his beautiful wife in a perfect little

house with a white picket fence!

Everythingappeared well…

Page 4: "The Hammer", a fable

But one morning the man’salarm clock went off.

His wife was already up…he could smell the bacon cooking. She always got up before him to fix his breakfast.

Page 5: "The Hammer", a fable

He threw back the covers and slowly swung his legs off the bed and sat up.

He reached over to the night stand, opened the drawer and removed a hammer.

Then he took the hammer and whacked himself forcefully on the head!

Page 6: "The Hammer", a fable

He fell back on the bed in a daze. After a few moments he regained his wits,

put the hammer back in the drawer, showered and got ready for work.

Page 7: "The Hammer", a fable

This went on for several weeks. Each morning he would awakenafter his wife, grab the hammer,

whack himself on the head and fall back on the bed, slowly regain his

senses and then get up and start his day.

Page 8: "The Hammer", a fable

He started noticing headaches all through the day. They were getting progressively worse with each

passing day. Finally, the headaches got so bad that he mentioned them to his wife. She became concerned

and called the man’s doctor and scheduled an appointment for him.

Page 9: "The Hammer", a fable

The man went to the appointment a few days later and told the

doctor all about his worsening headaches. The doctor did the

normal exam…checking the man’s blood pressure, blood work, etc.

All these things seemed to be within normal ranges. Then the doctor began to exam the man’s

head.

Page 10: "The Hammer", a fable

As he rubbed the man’s scalp he noticed numerous bumps and bruises. “Your head is a

mess…what in the world has happened to you? Have you been in an accident?” The man answered that he had not so the Dr.

asked him to tell him his daily routine. The man did, starting with his morning ritual of

awakening and then smacking himself in the head . The Doctor was shocked.

Page 11: "The Hammer", a fable

The Doctor screamed , ”What’s the matter with you man…

PUT THE HAMMER BACK IN THE GARAGE!”

Page 12: "The Hammer", a fable

The man went home and followed the doctor’s adviseand put the hammer back out in the garage.

Page 13: "The Hammer", a fable

The next morning, the man’s alarm went off. He could smell the bacon cooking in the kitchen. He threw back the covers, swung his

legs out of bed and sat up. He opened the night stand drawer

and the hammer wasn’t there! So he got up and showered and

started his day.

Page 14: "The Hammer", a fable

He had a delightful breakfast with his lovely wife. She asked him about his headache and he said it felt muchbetter and he was sure that it would continue to get better

…and it did!

Page 15: "The Hammer", a fable

Okay, I admit on the surface this seems like a ridiculous little story. But is it really? Let’s examine it a

little closer.

Page 16: "The Hammer", a fable

How many of us start our days in a way verysimilar to the man in the story. Let me explain. Do you ever wake up and then as you are layingthere does your mind start to fill up with negative thoughts? You start thinking about the day ahead. Things like : I have that big presentation today with my biggest client and I know I’ll never pull it off. Or I have a big test in class today and I just don’t get it. Or maybe today is that big job interview but you know you won’t get it , just like the 6 other jobs you’ve interviewed for in the last month! Come on , admit it.

Page 17: "The Hammer", a fable

We have all had days like that and those negative thoughts are really not much different than the hammer in the

fable!

Page 18: "The Hammer", a fable

Your day gets off to a bad start and the effects linger with you all day long. And with each passing day the

effects become worse and worse. Your head is a mess…Just Like Our Hero’s.

Page 20: "The Hammer", a fable
