“The future is here. It just isn’t

widely distributed yet.” —William Gibson

This is Almond Strowger.

Almond Strowger was an undertaker. When a good

friend passed away, the family didn’t call him for help with

the burial.

Something was up.

Strowger discovered the town’s phone operator was married to his competitor. She was sending

his clients to her husband.

Strowger was ticked.

So he invented a “robot” that made

it possible for people to call each other directly.

Without an operator’s help.

A good robot?

Or a bad robot?

“I think the development of full artificial intelligence could spell

the end of the human race.” —Stephen Hawking

Hawking isn’t the only one

worried about robots.

Asimov wrote about this in the 1940s.

Asimov’s three laws of robotics.

The first law: A robot may not injure a human

being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

But what counts as

“harm”?

Yeah, Ultron definitely makes the “harm” list.

But what about this?

If you need a chain, it’s an awesome machine.

But what if you’re a

chain maker?

And what about Strowger’s automatic phone switch?

In the late 1940s, more than

350,000 people were employed as telephone operators.

98% were women.

Today there are roughly 10,000.

The robots are already

causing harm.

Think your job is safe?

Robots are being tested in retail, fast food, hotels,

accounting firms, law offices, and operating rooms.

350,000 robot-assisted surgeries performed every year in the US:

cardiothoracic colorectal

gynecologic ENT

Robots are doing art history. Robots can rap.

Robots write news articles. Robots compose music.

And critics called it “delightful.”

Experts predict robots will take 47% of US jobs by 2033.

The safest jobs?

1. Recreational Therapist 19. Dentist 28. Human Resource Manager 61. Marketing Manager 95. Art Director 123. Writers and Authors 130. Software developers

The least safe jobs?

702. Telemarketers 686. Loan officers 641. Restaurant cooks 609. Paralegals 589. Accountants 532. HR assistants 526. Technical writers

How do you keep a robot from taking your job?

Don’t be a robot. Adapt.

Avoid job-skill atrophy.

Work with the robots. Let the robots process data while

you provide insight.

Develop empathy.

Robots can’t do this.

Be creative.

You must add value.
