Before starting media studies at AS I had only used photoshop software once before. Therefore I wasn’t very skilled and lacked confidence when using it. However, over the past few months I have become a lot more familiar on how to work it and how to use all the tools it provides. One tool I used a lot in photoshop was the magnetic lasso tool. This allows you to cut a certain part of an image out of a background. At first I found it very difficult to use but with a lot of practice I became a lot better at using it. This tool was a great help when constructing my product because of Toms hair. It allowed me to remove the background from behind him, yet still keep every detail of his hair there.

Another thing I found very useful on photoshop was that you could use layers. Therefore, if something went wrong you could simply just delete a layer without having to start the whole thing from scratch. This was very helpful for me as not being very skilled with photoshop, there were a lot of times I made mistakes whilst developing my product.

I have learnt from these technologies how good photoshop is. It has the ability to turn an image into something completely different. I would have struggled to complete this project without it.

Camera/lighting When taking the photos for my magazine, in order to make them look professional and of high quality we used DSLR cameras. These were quite difficult to use at first as they have lots of different settings on them, and you have to pick the right setting in order for the picture to look its best quality. At first I struggled with the camera as I found it difficult to focus it on the image properly, however after finding out more about the cameras I discovered you could automatically focus them, this made it a lot easier to take good quality images. When taking pictures I realised how important the use of light was. On my front cover I set the lamps in a certain way so I could create a shadow effect around Tom. I felt this made the image look more realistic and created more of an atmosphere. I also discovered that you have to have the lamps on a certain angle, if they were facing towards the camera the image would be poor and hard to see, so therefore the light had to be shining from behind the camera.

InDesign - AdobeIn design was the program I used to create my double page spread. I originally used photoshop to edit the image for my double page spread and then transferred it across to InDesign.InDesign was really helpful when constructing my double page spread as it allowed me to arrange my article so each column was of the same size, this made my work look like it had been done professionally like a real magazine.
