LEGACY SEARCH PLATFORM RAISES CONCERNS National Instruments provides engineers and scientists around the globe with cutting edge automated test equipment and virtual instrument software. A key factor in their success has been the ability to provide a search experience to customers and employees in which they can easily access, analyze, and act upon all relevant information related to a particular topic. Unfortunately, National Instruments was becoming dissatisfied with their legacy search platform, Microsoft FAST ESP, because it was increasingly apparent that the functionality wasn’t robust enough to meet the company’s future needs. FAST couldn’t provide potential customers with a highly personalized online experience and it prevented employees from finding relevant, up-to-date information within existing systems. To further complicate matters, FAST had recently been marked for end-of-life.

ATTIVIO DOMINATES MULTI-VENDOR SEARCH PLATFORM EVALUATIONS To determine which platform would serve them best in the future, National Instruments conducted a multi-vendor review of all available options. Mega-vendors were rejected early in the evaluation process due to their lack of transparency and completeness of product. The decision quickly became whether to create a search platform in-house or purchase Attivio’s Active Intelligence Engine (AIE). Although they already had in-house Solr technical resources, National Instruments became overwhelmed with the idea of starting from scratch. They wanted a robust, enterprise-ready platform with a transparent, predictable roadmap and Attivio was able to offer them just that. “AIE was [the] best choice to provide important new functionality and resolve technical pain points, [to] achieve a new level of business success more quickly.”

-Ken North

Senior Product Manager, Search National Instruments

AIE enabled National Instruments to build applications on a superior, future-proof platform where they could quickly realize value and displayed its functional dominance over open source by demonstrating the following critical capabilities:

Î Easily ingesting and integrating all relevant information regardless of format or location, and without the need for data modeling

Î Enriching information through a variety of methods including entity-level sentiment analysis and reliable relevancy tuning

Î Providing an open enterprise platform that accommodated National Instruments’ strict security needs, ensuring appropriate access to information. AIE also provided deep language capabilities, a key feature in supporting the company’s global customer and employee base

NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS ACHIEVES THEIR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES THROUGH AIE With Attivio, National Instruments’ customers and employees now have a single, unified point of access to all information that they seek or may want. This has enabled the company to provide site visitors with more engaging experiences, driving increased revenue, and its global workforce with highly relevant, up-to-date information. National Instruments recognizes the potential of AIE and understands its strategic importance to their business, inspiring the team to view the product as a true platform for future innovation.
