the  Mumbai Suburban Railway network. • Terminus for all slow, semi-fast and fast

INTRODUCTION AND ANALYSIS

4th YEAR 2014-15 I TOWN PLANNING I BORIVALI MARKET I I.E.S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE

• Market:• Located on the western side, 0.05km away from the

railway station, along the western side of S.V. Road• Majorly a vegetable market. • Only wholesale market in the western suburbs of

Mumbai which is located close to the station and it caters to all the smaller markets on the western side.

• Consist of BMC Market Building which is currently defunct as its access is inconvenient. This has caused the vendors to resort to hawing on the road abutting the market, causing congestion.

• Bus Depot:• Major bus depot located on the east, which connects to

various western suburbs by the western express highway and Thane district via Ghodbunder Road.

• No such facility on the western side. There is only one bus stop on S.V Road which causes traffic congestion on S.V Road.

LEGEND:Markets in Western Suburbs

S.W.O.T Analysis:STRENGHTS:•Only wholesale market in Borivali•Well organized bus terminal located on the eastern side•Forms a connecting point linking the western suburbs and the extended suburbs.

WEAKNESS:•Organized bus terminal located merely on the eastern side•Contains the Municipal market building which is inaccessible because of which the vegetable hawkers have taken to setting up their galas on the market road

•Skyway does not have openings at strategic locations i.e. the station, the market but only terminates near the bus stop which ensures a huge crowd near the bus terminal•Market opens onto the main road(SV road) which forms a bottle neck junction for the transit

OPPORTUNITIES:•Can be developed as a transit hub •Traffic congestion can be reduced on the main road •Redirecting of the skywalks to allow for better movement patterns

THREATS:•Heavy moving traffic on the SV road proves to be unsafe for pedestrians

DESIGN:-

•Due to over crowding of people, cars, buses resulted in heavy traffic plus unorganised pedestrian flow. To curb the traffic caused by parked rickshaws and buses on S.V. road the rickshaw and the bus stand have been moved in. With the help of new design the rickshaws and the buses will be redirected to their respective stands resulting a smooth flow of traffic on S.V road.

•The BMC office, market and storage area have been all taken into a one single building. Market is located on the ground floor as well as at G+2 level for the people using the sky walk. The sky walk will directly enter this level.

•A parking lot has been provided at the basement of this structure. This will avoid the heavy traffic on S.V road caused due to parked private vehicles. A separate loading unloading platform has been provided.

DESIGN PROPOSAL AND ITS FUTURE REPLICATION

4th YEAR 2014-15 I TOWN PLANNING I BORIVALI MARKET I I.E.S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE

FUTURE REPLICATION:

Vegetables markets with railway connectivity:• Apart from Borivali, similar

vegetable markets prevail in some other areas too like Dadar and Kalyan.

• It is easier and convenient for transportation of goods, while coming in from the farther villages and remote areas to these markets from where the vegetables are supplied to the other suburbs and retailers.

• Such a market becomes very useful especially for the working class people who can buy their vegetables on their respective ways back home after spending h=the whole day in the office. Still the market not being away from the reach of the local city crowd.

• The Borivali Vegetable Market, at a 50m walk from Borivali Railway station makes it convenient for the local crowd as well as the passing by crowd to buy the vegetables on their way back home.

• Borivali Vegetable market serves the local crowd as well as to the nearby suburbs, Kandivali, Malad, Vasai, Virar, etc.
