Captive Power Plants in India 2016: Opportunity Tracker

for Value Chain Players I 2

Contribution of captive power plants in India for July „2016

The business case for captive power plant is growing stronger with the realms of small & mid-size industry clutters mushrooming on pan India basis. Interestingly, the business cases for captive power generation has consistently garnered momentum since the very concept got introduced in India post 2003 or better say post application of EA, 2003. Though, captive power generation in India can‟t be termed as disruptive however it certainly has elevated itself to the genres of being one with the kind of capacities added on yearly basis which is nearing a hallmark figure of 50 GW in terms of installed capacity for the country.

41 GW

In India the woes of power distribution utilities are well known, coupled with cross-subsidy structure followed in most of the states of the country the quest for reliable as well affordable power for the commercial & industrial users seems never ending. This scenario when united with increasing gorge of power demand-supply gap has provided the necessary fillip which has led to prolific growth of captive power generation in India. Certainly, with such capacity additions captive power generation presents a galore of opportunities for allied value chain players which has not been tracked so far and transformed in the form of a quality dossier.

Known to one and all the “Make in India” spree that has taken over the Indian manufacturing market and has not only ignited the pace of production in large industrial units but is definitely steaming up the small & mid sized industries as well. But, aiming big on the productivity raises deep concerns for high power demand and swelling electricity costs. In order to cut down these cost burdens and to meet the desired electricity demand, many of the manufacturing units are opting for setting up in house 24×7 power supply facility.

We have been aware of the fact that industrial units such as textile mills, sugar mills , cement and steel plants, which are heavily dependent on power for manufacturing have been operating on captive power plants. But, in order to have an uninterrupted power supply in order to enhance the productivity sectors like pharmaceuticals , healthcare and IT etc are to expected to follow the suit. Hence, a massive business case exists for the CPP segment in India.

Captive Power Plants in India : Opportunity Tracker for Value Chain

Players I 3

If fuels like coal and gas are readily available to the captive power developers,

two-third of the industrial consumption can be met by operational CPPs in India

Power consumption by industrial units in India hovers around 30-40% of the total electricity demand. A total of around 2500 plus captive power plants are currently operational in India with an overall installed capacity of 41 GW. If sources like coal and gas are readily available to the developers, this capacity can definitely notch up in coming years with a significant quantum. Moreover, can also fulfill 2/3 of the industrial power demand. Given below is the industry wise breakup of captive power capacity estimated for July 2016.

Typically, power from the conventional state electricity grid costs above INR 6 per unit, while diesel-powered generators (for back-up) incur INR17 per unit. On the other hand, power from CPPs vary between zero and INR 15 per unit depending on the raw material used. If it‟s a gas-based plant, cost will be upwards INR 15 per unit, while for furnace oil and naphtha-based plants, costs are above INR10 per unit.

5 % Annual growth projected for CPPs Capacity in India Till FY‟ 2020 in BAU Scenario

The most economical turns out to be the coal-based plants that deliver power starting INR 2 per unit. But, this may not be an attractive option always for companies, highly depending upon its domestic availability. Taking the cognizance of current trends in the Indian renewable industry solar with per unit power cost zero coupled with minimal costs on operations and maintenance is coming out to be a viable option for firms into the service sector.
