The Advantage of Knowledge
A rich man and a poor man lived side by side in a town of olden France . The rich man had a fine house and garden, horses and carriages, and many servants to wait on him. But he was ignorant
and stupid. The other man, though poor in gold and silver , was rich in knowledge and understanding. His learning and wisdom gave him the means for understanding people and for
appreciating the difference between ugliness and beauty , and between evil and good.
The two men argued endlessly. The rich man said money counted more than anything else in the world because if you had money you could buy whatever you all wanted with it. “What good is all your wisdom,” he often asked his neighbor, “if you haven’t the money to buy the things you need?
The wise poor man was too wise to try to explain his point of view to the stupid rich man who was quite incapable of understanding it .
One day , war broke out. The whole town was in ruins after the fighting stopped and both men, stripped of everything and fleeing for their lives, had to seek refuge in another place.
The rich man, without his money or his belongings, was poor indeed, for he now had nothing. Wherever he went he was scorned for his ignorance and stupidity.
But the wise man still had his learning and his wisdom. Nothing could ever take from him the rich store of knowledge in his mind and in his heart. Everywhere he went he was received with honor.
