DESCRIPTION
Conventional Architecture constraints social life and perpetuates status quo. Social networks expand our social lives and nourish collective consciousness. Can social networks generate a truly social architecture? Can architecture live and evolve with our relationships and aspirations? Could Social Architecture challenge status quo, expand our social lives and embody global consciousness ? Since a few years, Cesar Harada has been experimenting with physical social networks made of real people and ropes. Separately Harada has been experimenting with social medias and super light-weight ephemeral structures. At the TED Fellow retreat Cesar is inviting all the fellows to collectively built a large structure made of simple plastic tubes and paper emerging from physical social networks. This experiment, first of it's kind, is at the intersection of dance, sculpture, architecture, qualitative / quantitative social science and philosophy of science. How can we re-invent the off-line world taking the best of the on-line world? How do we fully integrate these 2 experiences and multiply the power of collaboration and play? Quoting Albert Einstein "Play is the highest form of research." We are temporarily dissolving social boundaries by working together building a space of play where the entire surface of the structure will become a giant brainstorming board, supporting expressions of creativity and shared intelligent emotions. The TED fellows are world changing individuals that are all participating to general civilisation progress in their respective fields. But what's even more powerful is when these innovators explore together unchartered territories for the benefit of humanity. We need to make sure they all meet in an extendable space of play, intimacy that fosters creativity and collaboration. The event will be photographed, shared on facebook and tagged to make sure the newly created connections extend after the event thanks to this unique experience they have in common. Also this is a real scientific experiment with a large community of extreme specimen :) We have some of the world greatest artists, scientists, inventors in the best years of their lives wanting to communicate, express and share. The whole event / structure is going to be at their image as we are building an icon and home for our community. The 3 minutes presentation will be a call to participate this experiment. Step 1
Brownian motion:Get people to move, warm up, play together. At this stage it feels a lot like the beginning of a dance class. People walk in random patterns, with their eyes opened, and closed.

Linear network:Top view. One line connects everyone. Each square is a person. Each line is a thread.

Branched network:We cut the one line in some places to create branched networks.

Complex network:Everyone is connected to everyone. That is a lot of thread. It allows less “social mobility”. So which network do you feel more comfortable in?

Voronoi cells:Think about bubbles. The shape of the bubbles can be described as the minimum surface between maximum volumes.

Tensile arches:At the intersection of each cell, a vertical “column” is “planted”. Think of a bow and arrow :connect the 2 ends of a PVC pipe with a thread, and pull until it bends into an arc. That’s how simple and light the structure is.

Step 7
Skin:Imagine the largest paper mache you have ever seen. The PVC tube is the skeleton, the paper is the skin. We use wallpaper glue that dries in a few minutes.

Play!!!The structure is now built. The thin walls are semi-transparent and let some light filter through, creating a feeling of “intimate alcoves” as well as larger “public spaces”.

Real social network + Virtual social network. We use the Facebook API (face recognition) to connect every person to every person making sure all the fellows are connected in both the real and the virtual world - strengthening our family.

SafetyThe structure is so light, so no safety gear is required for participants.
Fire : it is easy to add a fire retardant on the paper structure.
Weather : we can waterproof the paper.
Wind : we can stabilise the structure using sand bags.
