Dini Dini engineering s.r.l. DescripEon Enrico developed a mega
scaled analogue of a powder based 3D Printer based on the working
principle invented at the MIT of Boston in the latest 80s and
commercialized for oce environment by the US Z-Corp of Burlington
(MA). Scaling the machine at an architectural scale meant
developing a printer head not based on the tradiEonal ink-jet
technology and adopEng building equipment manufacturing soluEons
and a chemistry suitable to make building structures. Seen by the
outside the printer looks like a big aluminum structure. Despite
its large size, the structure is very light and it can be easily
transported, assembled and dismantled in a few hours by two
workmen. The D-Shape printer was presented at Earls Courts Fair
Civils 2007 .

19. Year : 2007 Project Title : D-Shape 3D Printer How the
D-Shape Printer works CAD-CAM so_ware operates the ploRer during
the prinEng process. The external laace structure holds the printer
head, which represents the real core of this new technology.. The
process begins from the 3D data: the computer design obtained is
converted into an STL le and is imported into the so_ware that
controls D-Shapes printer head. The prinEng process takes place in
a conEnuous work session: during the prinEng of each secEon a
structural ink is deposited by the printers nozzles on the sand.
The solidicaEon process takes 24 hours to complete. The prinEng
starts from the boRom of the construcEon and rises up in secEons of
5-10mm each: upon contact the solidicaEon process starts and a new
layer is added. Surplus sand that has not been embedded within the
structure acts as a buRressing support while the solidicaEon
process takes place. This surplus sand then can be reused on future
prints.

Netherlands Abstract from
hRp://blog.rhino3d.com/2010/11/concrete-3d-printed-sculpture-by-rinus.html
Rinus Roelofs created recently a sculpture for the Arte Sella park
(Italy). The sculpture is designed in Rhino and printed in
concrete, using the latest technology from D-Shape, a huge concrete
3D printer. "I came in contact with Enrico Dini (the inventor of
the machine) at the University of Eindhoven (WAAS conference 2009 -
I was there to give a Grasshopper workshop). A_er his presentaEon
it was immediately clear to me that I had to go to Pisa, where the
printer is located, for the realizaEon in stone of some of my Rhino
designs. This year a complete new printer is build with many
improvements based on the experiences with their rst printer. The
new printer came in use only 4 months ago. And a_er some
experiments, failures and adjustments of my Rhino-model, the
sculpture came out very well. It was good to work with the people
of Dinitech. And I will be happy to start a next project with
them."

garden combines strength and lightness, creaEng an environmentally
sustainable and elegant space for entertaining and relaxaEon. The
centrepiece of the garden is a modern structure that has been made
using a new sustainable technology called D-shape, a recycled
arEcial stone that is indisEnguishable from real stone and 100%
environmentally friendly. The garden celebrates the reunion of
millions of grains of rock sand, which started out as natural stone
and have been brought together again through the recycling process
to form the structure.

experiment ever in which 3D prinEng is applied as a real building
technique facing most of the common maRers related to civil
engineering. The purpose of the Radiolaria is to be a laicisEc
