DESCRIPTION

The slides that accompany my second CHI 2013 talk. This talk was quite fun to give, as it reflects on the problems my colleagues and I have had with working with the media - and I got the feeling our concerns were shared by many other researchers! Our message is that using the mass media can provide practical benefits to researchers but there are specific qualities of HCI research that make it easily manipulatable and misrepresentable by certain national media outlets. “Surely, basic human psychology tells us that any punitive system intending to correct "bad" behavior must also include rewards for "good behavior". Or, in an ideal world, you would only have rewards.”

“I can't see it working ... landmarks such as those mentioned in the article are changing so rapidly. Pubs are closing, then being demolished ... postboxes are vanishing, telephone kiosks are a rarity and bus stops seem to move with the seasons.”

“I feel deeply offended by the idea that as an older person (67) I need an aid to drive my car … I'm not the one driving at 90+ and switching lanes without signaling on motorways. The worst drivers, like the mobile phone users are mostly at the younger end of the age range.”

“... this university must have been put up to this invention by either government or council stazi...”

“It should not be forced and my Tax dollars should not be spent on research like this. Neither should tax payers in broke England ...”

“a person who is intrinsically not very bright, so has spent their lives hiding in academia rather than having to operate in the real world like the majority of us have to.”

“self-righteous tree hugging libs.”

Limited presentation of scenarios the technologies are used in

leads to criticisms of their value

Focus on ‘the gadget’ and its function and making sense of

how it may work (or not)

Taken to be a future product people will be offered to buy, or

forced to use, in their home

What sort of impact is this?
