Synopsis – Use of software in low carbon design process

• The problem - issues that designers face when pursuing low carbon design.

• The solution - vision of what the solution could be.

• Current Situation – What can be done now?

• Roadmap – what steps need to be taken to move towards the vision.

Key elements of integrated design process

• Multi-disciplinary collaboration between architects, engineers, contractors, cost specialists, facility managers right from the beginning of the design process

• Discussion of the various important performance issues and the establishment of a consensus on this matter between client and designers

• Budget restrictions applied at the whole building level, with no strict separation of budgets for individual building systems.

• The addition of subject specialists involved (e.g. energy simulation, daylighting, comfort, acoustics)

• Testing of various design assumptions through the use of performance analysis throughout the whole process to provide relatively objective information on this key aspect of performance

• Clear articulation of performance targets and strategies, to be updated throughout the process by the design team

How it works:

1. Draw Geometry in Autodesk Revit

2. From the Revit Toolbar:

• Set Building Location

• Define Building Parameters:

• Building Type

• Construction Materials

• Building System Types

• Room Types

3. Launch IES VE-Toolkits/VE-Pro

4. Choose Analysis Type

Next Steps

• Raising awareness about the strengths and weaknesses of the current situation

with respect to Interoperability.

• Continue to improve the Interoperability and start to look at the ‘round-trip’

whereby we take information back into the BIM package from the analysis

package.

• Automation of parts of the process – automatic updating and re-calculation when

something changes.

• Cloud computing

• Key documents

• IGT ‘Low Carbon Construction’ report

• Cabinet Office ‘Government Construction Strategy’

• ‘BIM Working Party Strategy Paper’
