HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR COLLEGE CLASSES
By: Kayla Swain
AN INCOMING FIRST YEAR STUDENT IS USUALLY:
•Anxious and worried about success in their college classes•Excited about what the school has to offer
I AM HERE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR SUCCESS IN YOUR COLLEGE CLASSES AND IMPEDE YOUR WORRIES BY USING THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIES:
• Procrastinating•Using your head• Skipping Class• Lessening your notetaking skills• Partying
PROCRASTINATING
• Complete all of your assignments as close to the due date as possible• It is one of the most effective strategies • You will be able to make straight A’s• You will have the work ethic and grades to join the honors
program or professional school• Everyone who graduated from college procrastinated and
you should too• Ex. Start your chemistry progress check at 9:55 p.m. since it
is due at 10:00 p.m.
USING YOUR HEAD
• Do not keep an agenda just keep information including due dates about all of your classes in your head• You will feel much more relaxed and sane• When you have so many assignments to finish in one week this strategy is usually helpful
• You will forget about homework in your classes• College is just like high school so if you forget to do your homework you will receive an extension• You will be given more time to finish the homework you’ve been procrastinating on since you will
be given an extension • It makes college much easier for you since you will no longer have pressure to complete
assignments
SKIPPING CLASS
• You will be able to have more time to procrastinate on homework• Lecture halls do not take attendance• The lecture notes are useless• Sleeping in is more important • It has been proven a success in Psychology 1101 that skipping class
correlates with higher grades• You just need to know the due dates of the assignments so you can
procrastinate on completing them.
LESSENING YOUR NOTE TAKING SKILLS
• More rest in class because all college students need sleep• The notes are useless for a future test• It makes a difference between a higher grade and a lower
grade in a class (If you can guess which one?)• It ends up becoming a positive situation in the long run
since you get better grades and more rest
PARTYING
• Correlates with being a well rested and attentive student in class• Positively impacts your grades since it gives you a sharper mind• Go downtown six days out of the week• It gives you the energy to procrastinate on all of your homework in your
college classes.
TO CONCLUDE:
•The less work you are putting into college is the better. You shouldn't have to work hard to become successful in your college classes…right?
