DESCRIPTION

Lidia Pasini, architect. I was born in Forlì, Italy, on 13 July 1988. After graduating at the Liceo Scientifico (science high school), I attended the school of Architecture at the University of Ferrara. Thanks to an exchange programme, offered by my University, I had the chance of attending the first semester of the fourth year of University at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver, Canada. During the years of University, while I was basically focusing on my education, I had the occasion to develop a particular interest in the field of photography and graphic design. I graduated on March 2013 (final grade: 110/110 cum laude). My thesis project “POSTPRODUCTION. Creative reuse of Spazio Grisù in Ferrara” suggests a strategic model of regenerating a disused building with limited budget. Immediately after the graduation I have founded (OURlab) with a group of young designers. OUR Lab, which is specialised in urban regeneration actions, is one of the nineteen cultural and creative business settled in Spazio Grisù, a former fire station turned into a creative factory.. This project represent a dynamic entity in the society of the city and a virtuous model of buildings reuse.

PostproductionCreative reuse of a former fire station in FerraraGRADUATION PROJECT2013mentors: gabriele lelli / gianfranco franzwith Martina FuligniFAF Ferrara - IT

Page 7: PORTOFOLIO | Lidia Pasini

The intention of our proposal for the reactivation of the former fire station was to transform into concrete objects that strategic cultural model, obtained from the mapping and analysis of several case studies. The period of reactivation and the cost of the project became binding in the definition of the intervention strategy. In regards to costs we assumed a budget close to zero, a condition in which the promoters of Spazio Grisù really were. Furthermore, our proposal took into account the “TIME” factor, which together with the economic efficiency drove design choices towards an informal architecture.

We developed a map which includes all the CCI in Italy and the major cultural activities in Europe. They are spread all over Europe especially in the

biggest cities – London, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona – and the number of CCI in Europe has grown up more and more in the last years. Adaptive reuse became a process more and more common and the creative activities proved to be particularly successful both for social and economical reasons.

We identified two major processes used to transform these buildings. The first is a bottom-up process, so the local community asked to protect a particular building. The second process is a legalized squat; some people actually first occupied a building, then the local authorities legalized their permanence and in the end, after some time, the building is finally suitable for the new purposes. The key point of these processes is that they are low-cost strategy that require a light intervention.

The project is based on two principles, the concept of post-production and the architecture of the addition.

*postproduction: is a technical term of the audiovisual language. The manipulated materials are no longer primary, but are objects already in circulation, that is to say, objects already informed by other objects.

Starting from the concepts we have identified design guidelines, which have led to identify three possible types of intervention we have called LOFT, BOX and HOUSE.

All three forms of intervention are bound to the existing space: the actual state of each room already contained the vocation to one of the three types.

Page 11: PORTOFOLIO | Lidia Pasini

The first step was to identify the vocation (loft, garage, house) of each room and the grade of intervention it was needed.

Then we selected the type of space for every function of the settlement program. For example, the production laboratories require a space like the Loft one, while offices require a more intimate space, such as the House. In this way to define the spatial layout we just needed to cross the current vocational state of each room with the needs of the functional program.

The new use adaptation to the actual state of the building permit to simplify the architectural intervention. We followed these 5 simple rules to make an informal design.

1. SAVING low budget + self-financing

2. UNTREATED WOOD poor material + low cost + flexible

3. DRY CONSTRUCTIONS ease and fast assembly

4. HOME MADE volunteer labor and self-construction

5. AVAILABLE FURNITURE REUSE

The client, Consorzio Sì, is a social enterprise that brings together several no profit organizations operating in the territory of Ferrara. The client’s need, constrained in a limited budget, were to restore the Cedis headquarter settled in the centre of Ferrara (which is also the place where Cedis association meets unemployed people), and to design and built a trade show exhibition at the fair of Rimini (Fiera di Rimini). The main aim of the project is to think to the design of the permanent and of the temporary spaces in a coordinated way, and to find a flexible solution in order to achieve the maximum output with minimum effort. The house shaped wooden furniture is the core of the project thanks to its modularity, its inexpensiveness and easiness to assemble.
