HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY

TEXTS?

INTRO

For my ancillary products I had to create a

movie poster and a movie review for

relating to my main product, which is a

featurette for a movie called ‘The

Masterpiece. I feel that I have created

synergy throughout my three pieces as

they’re al similar in style and theme. They

‘re built on the genre of a silent movie, set

in the 20’s. I think that I’ve portrayed this

accurately throughout my main product

and my ancillary products.

Page 3: Question Two

ANCILLARY 1

My first ancillary task was to create

a movie poster advertising the movie

‘The Masterpiece’. I explored the

silent movie genre as a whole and,

when constructing my movie poster,

I used my previous movie poster

research and also research other

silent movie posters for genre-

specific inspiration. I looked at movie

posters such as ‘The Artist’, which

has been a big inspiration for out

main product, as well as other silent

movie posters I’d gathered online.

ANCILLARY 1

The font for my movie poster is also

inspired from ‘The Artist’. The font

consists of elegant handwriting to

reflect on the decadence of the 20’s

era and the silent movie genre, in

which The Artist and our own

product is based on. The font that we

used throughout or design was

called ‘The Dragon Is Coming’ and is

very swirly and artistic looking,

which creates synergy throughout

the products and also reflects on the

artistic side of the plot.

Page 5: Question Two

ANCILLARY 1

The colour scheme for my poster

consists of a black and white

background and image to reflect on

the 1920’s era, similar to the poster

for ‘The Artist’. The black and white

colour scheme ties in with the silent

movie genre. The title of ‘The

Masterpiece’ has golden lettering

which emphasises the elegance of

the genre and movie style/period, as

well as the artistic aspect of the

movie.

Page 6: Question Two

ANCILLARY 1

The image that I have included on

my poster is black and white because

the movie is set in the 1920’s and so

it is consistent with the theme and

genre of the movie, and is also

inspired by the poster for ‘The Artist’

so the poster would interest a similar

audience in real life. The mise en

scene shows the actors wearing old

style clothing that would be expected

from a silent movie/ 1920’s time

period. The main characters are

Page 7: Question Two

ANCILLARY 1

The institutional credits are

similar to those on a real-life

media product, as I used movie

posters for inspiration for my

credits. I also had to create a

logo to be included on the poster.

I called the production company

‘Winchester Bros’ and designed

the logo. The logo was featured

on the poster and also the main

product, and the company was

mentioned on the movie review,

creating synergy between the

products.

Page 8: Question Two

ANCILLARY 2

My second ancillary task was to

create a double page spread of a

magazine review of the movie ‘The

Masterpiece’. I explored the silent

movie genre as a whole and, when

constructing the review I used my

previous movie review research for

inspiration on what to include in my

review. My magazine article

contained a review of the movie,

‘The Artist’ as well as images from

the. Similarly to the poster, the aim

for the review was to discuss the

movie and also to advertise the

movie.

Page 9: Question Two

ANCILLARY 2

The images on the article feature

scenes from the movie and also the

cast themselves. The images show the

characters wearing 1920’s style

clothing to reflect on the genre of the

and period of the movie, thus creating

synergy between the products. The

images have bright lighting to make

them stand out, and are also in black

and white because of the era the film is

set in and to relate to the silent movie

genre, similar to that of ‘The Artist’,

thus meaning it fits in compared to

real-life media products.

Page 10: Question Two

ANCILLARY 2

The colour scheme of the title is

similar to that of the poster, in that

it’s golden to make it appear more

valuable and artistic, similar to the

painting that ‘The Masterpiece’ is

about. The article itself is written in

black and white in order to conform

to real life media conventions. The

images on the poster are also black

and white to reflect on the 20’s era

and the silent movie genre, creating

synergy between the poster and the

main product.

Page 11: Question Two

MAIN PRODUCT

My main product is a featurette

about the making-of of a silent movie

called ‘The Masterpiece’. The

featurette itself is called ‘The

Making of The Masterpiece’. We

were inspired by the featurette for

The Artist, which is also set in the

1920’s and is a silent movie, so that

we would be able to compare our

own product to a real-life product.

The featurette has a similar aim as

the ancillary products as they’re all

made to advertise the movie.

Page 12: Question Two

MAIN PRODUCT

The colour scheme between the

products all contain black and white

images and scenes to reflect on the

20’s silent movie genre, creating

synergy between the products. There

is also synergy between the title

sequence as the fonts are the same

(Dragon Is Coming), and appears

elegant to suite the genre and

artistic aspect of the movie. The

colour of the titles are all golden

shades to appear elegant and also to

create synergy between the three.

Page 13: Question Two

MAIN PRODUCT

The mise on scene for the featurette

differentiates from an art gallery which

reflects on the plot of the movie, and

also has 20’s style décor to create

synergy with the ancillary products

which are also have a similar style.

There is also the use of the interview

rooms which show the more technical,

behind-the-scenes area of the featurette.

The interview scenes build up on the

making of and also what the cast like in

the movie, thus advertising the movie

which is a similar goal behind the two

ancillary products.

Page 14: Question Two

CONCLUSION

I feel that the combination between my three products is

effective as there is synergy between the three products with

regards to the colour scheme, house style and the images

used within the products. Because the products are inspired

by a real life product, ‘The Artist’ I feel that they are similar

in comparison and therefore will appeal to a similar audience.

The combination of the products reflect on the product and

are effective, with the use of black and white images, the

house style and also the music within the main product. I feel

that the products combined suite both the genre and match

up to real life products, and also contain synergy throughout

the three.
