Ray Brown of Gary Glitter's management firm said that since Gary's retirement earlier this year there have been many offers made to him to retum.

felt unable to resist because It was an Invitation to participate in a charity show to help kids at Christmas time," he said.

While Gary's former Glitter Band, now the G Band, are appearing on the same bill they will not be backing him on this occasion since they are now pursuing a different musical approach to their Glitter days.

The current band - Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake, Mick Box, Trevor Boulder and Jahn Lawton - make their live debut m December Sin Macon, Georgia, at the beginning of a two month US tour. British fans have to wall until February 21i to see the group when., they will play 12 dates opening at Birmingham Odeon.

A single is scheduled for January 14 release, and an album follow.. provisionally titled 'Firefly' 1n February.

SINGLE AND NEW BAND MARC ROLAN has a new single, album and UK tour forthcoming, and a new lineup for T. Rex.

The new single 'To Know You Is To Love You', the Phil Spector number, was recorded by Marc with O orla Jones, and In coupled with a seH- penned number 'City Port', which he says Is about "brain waves and mid gets".

Ills as yet untitled LP Is released In February and

includes Steve Harley singing an sine track. The 'Ingle will be Issued In January.

A new look T. Rex will do about 15 dotes planned for mid -February to coin dde with the album's release. Miller Anderson will play guitar, llerble Flowers, bass, Tony Newman drums, and Dino Dines, keyboards.

RICK WAKEMAN has rejoined Yes - the band he left In July 1974,

He replaces Patrick Moray, who leaves due to musical differences, and will take part In their 1977 world tour. The hand are presently In Montreux, Switzerland working on an album for the New Year.

THEY'VE GOT sun. shine and scenery in Phoenix, Arizona, but not a decent cup of tea.

From deep within a hotel where he's checked in Under the name of Mr Miles, Leo Sayer dreams of bubbling water and whistling kettles.

"I've tried a taw of the local brews but they're pretty revolting." he. says. "I'II have to get my record company to ship out some of my favourite PG Tips, rd probably sing twice as welt That's what I miss about Britain. quiet Sundays with a newspaper In one hand and a cuppa In the other. I'll be coming home In Ume for Christmas. The final gig of this tour Is early December In To- mnto and I hope.to be flying back the following day,

Leo's on his second headlining tour of the States. After Phoenix he flies to Atlanta for two nights at a club before Jetting across to Chicago.

Perfectionist "Many people find

America tiring hut I love every minute," he says "It's great seeing new faces and places I ran wander around moreover here because I'm not so well known A lot of British bands blow themselves out when they're over here, they think It's the thing to do and they just spend all their time in a daze.

I don't drink. I've got my wife with me and we go to bed early. Actually, I find American louring very relaxing You fly nearly everywhere and I

just sit in a hotel room wailing for the road manager to come knock- ing on the door and tell me where Im going. Some- timesl'mcan never remember, because 1 just

concentrate on building myself ufp for the performance. I Just can't think of anything else.I'm In a daze for days. I'm a perfectionist and so I worry about everything I do, right down to U I'm getting my hand move- ments right.

"Like ail my tours this one has taken a year to plan. I get totally unnerved if even the slightest things go wrong A lot of people must think I make a vast amount of money out of touring the States but when you're taking seven people on the road and a fairly large crew you don't come away with that much.

"Even my money from singles and albums hasn't stretched very far, most of It Is ploughed back into the act. It seems hest to do that because I never have time to enjoy financial success. Any- way the real satisfaction for me cornea from giving a good performance. Many people have said this before and In some cases it doesn't ring true, but the feeling I pick up from an audience Is truly rewarding.

"We rehearsed for two solid weeks before the tour The band I've got now is the best I've ever had. I'm going lo bring them ló Britain with me, It's going to be very expensive but it'll be worth it The great thing Is that we're all friends and everybody fits In. There are no prima donnas. The band are all from LA and I used them ea the album."

"I play mainly dubs over here, but of course the clubs are far bigger than those in the north of England. Often the audience act super cool and 1 don't gel so many kids coming along be- cause the age limit is 21

and it's ruthlessly en. forced. There's a trend to ignore artists If they're sitting In the audience ('or instance Elton John

walked Into a Los Angeles dub and was almost totally Ignored - I could never Imagine that happening in Britain, he'd be stripped naked!

"In the States places tend to have a lot more character and I think artists need that to give their best performances. There's nothing worse than playing In a dingy shack that has been vandalised by an aud- ience The Forum in Los Angeles Is magnifleent plus red carpets and delicious waitresses showing you to your seat Beats the Marquee any day.

"The latest album has been accepted more readily In the States because It's closer In American styles. I'll be recording most of the next album in LA, hut I also want to record some in England I want to get an English feel on some of the tracks particularly those with strings.

"I'm hoping louse Paul Buck master again, he's great at getting a traditional orchestral sound We're going to be releasing another three singles from the album and Richard is already hard at work editing one down, but I'm not In a position to say which one I'll be back in America In January for another tour and I (rope to be back in Britain for a tour in March or April, The audiences are going to see me al my Ughtest

"America really sharp- ens you up, there's no better way to learn how to overcome your nerves I'm nol going to become a tax exile, it seems to me that many bands just go 10 America to make money and won't admit

For Ms Bonnie Tyler, a lot ha happened In the past eight weeks or o. From bring a housewife who liked to sing in the evenings for some extra pocket money, she's now, in this short space of time, made her mark in no uncertain terms In the pop buntline'.

Tenth her housewife Superstar Isn't quite heir. Just n - years old, Bonnie has been In show bit for five yeah. It all started when she won a local talent Contest In South stales and gave Up working in a shop to Decease full time resident singer Ina night club,

For Ume she worked with a group called 'The Dixie.. Then she formed a group tar cabaret and club work. Then along cane Ronnie Sett and Steve it Ore, soangwriters, red producer Dave Mackey and the song 'Lost In France'. t big push from RCA and there we were, blue eyed, fair haired Bonnie ass ,up there with the best of 'ern Notting for chart po eidons.

Let's go back to the beginning. Bonnie COMP% from a family of three sisters and two brothers and a dog named Sam from the village of Skewen near S. senses.

"When I left," says Bonnie, "1 wanted to work Ina local ship. I started off wiling potatoes, but graduated to sweets. I'd been Interested in singing and music since I was very young. We were a musical family. I can remember using the vacuum cleaner as a pretend microphone. The whole family used to like singing."

Bonnie's first single, 'My My Honeyoombe' was not an outstanding success. In fact U failed to take off at all. And Bonnie wasn't too keen an 'Lost In Frans' when she first heard the song.

It wasn't really me. hut everyone seemed to have so mach confidence In IL I suppose it grew on Inc. I suppose It's because It's larch a catchy sag.

"My fdlow-up single is going to be much more guilty. I don't know if I'm supposed to tell you, but It's going to be a,namber called 'Let Me Be More Than A Lover'. .And we're planning an album for January.

"No. I don't like being erleten off as

'just another Mary llopkin', I've ale ny been a hen of Janie Joplin. My hewn, rite song of hen Is `Piece of My Heart.'

"I'm not wire what ernga ere being planned for the album,. 'lost In Francs' ass aimed al the singles market. It's not what 1'd call an album track. I like more g1futs and more funk."

So, Ronnie, what's it like to be a star all of a sudden like? "I'm excited. I mean, all Moto people mot like rte a little to buy my record. I get welted for my autograph and everything (and everything!) nos, I went Into are ~mist shop the other day and the lady behind the counter said her daughter wanted to know what 1 was buying. It's strange, but H' mashing, It's eem riling."

As It happens, Bonnie has taken her rise to stardom in her stride. She doesn't seem to have been affected by the net rrmidair of the pop monde business, ands taken It all very calmly,

"Hearne as a bit of a surprise lobes* a hit record. 1 never nally thought about It before. I'm enjoying it. i just Uke singing. "

ELO ELO, it's the string section.

Hugh McDowell was given his first cello when he was just four - and - a . half years old. "II was a size eight cello, same pitch as a standard cello and must have sounded terrible." Hugh went to the 'Yehudl Menuhln School of Music' where he achieved fame by being the first pupil to be thrown out "For reasons of discipline. not musical ability" adds Hugh

Undaunted, young Hugh went on to the Central Tutorial School for Musicians where he took a "sort of two - year 'A' level course in music, covering many aspects of 1,000 years of music " He went on to the Guildhall School of Music for two terms and started playing part time with ELO, "It got too much really, playing with the band until tour In the morning and then having to get the milk train back for college, so I quit studying to Join ELO full -time."

Different Mik Kaminski studied

jazz at Leeds Music Centre and was Just a player in Joe Soap's band until he toad an ad. in a music paper. Now he's violinist in a rock 'n' roll band.

Mlle and Hugh share a

house in London where they Live when they're not touring. They're two straight - talking guys In a band that most agree is something a little differ- ent. Begun as an experimental attempt to use strings and some classical influence in the context of a rock 'n' roll group, ELO have estab. Dished themselves in a field where there are no obvious competitors

Something different? "Jethro Tull used to use a

string quartet." ex pisined Hugh. "But that was as a separate entity, we work together as a

unit, everybody's got their part to play. People like to pigeon - hole music, We get called 'classical rock', 1 think it's just that journalists feel everything must have its slot, must lit In somewhere.

"Our music borders on a lot of styles Our string

passages are Tchalkov- skyesque (try writing that in short hand for your starter for ten), but our most Indentiflable influence must be the Beatles. "

It was after recording their fourth album, 'Eldorado'. that the band settled on its current line- up. Band leader and creator. Jeff Lynne, says of Mik, "Mlk Is so shy that every Ume he does his solo we all have to egg him on to take an extra bow. The crowd will be going wild and he'll say, 'They didn't like it, did they?' and we have to force him to run around the stage one more time. " And of Hugh, "He gets into this thing of 'I'm A Laser'. It took us a long Ume to convince him he should wear dark glasses during that number to protect his eyes. "

I'll cane to the lasers later, but first, what do the boys think of Jeff Lynne, their leader, guitarist, composer, vo- calist and songwriter?

"Jell keeps a light hold on the reins," says Hugh. "He knows, at lea stI hope he knows the direction we're going in. I'm not lyric minded, so don't get into songwriting. We all have Ideas though Both Mlk and I do solos on

nine per cent of the ideas are no use at all. but occasionally someone comes up w Ith something brttiant.

"We have this bunch of mad geniuses in Hawaii. There's this guy Steve Pickford. We call him Rudolph because he's always dancing around. He came up with the weird lasers idea.

"On our last American tour, on outdoor dates, a helium filled balloon appeared behind the stage during the last number Suspended from it was a mirror - ball. The laser was bounced off It, causing a shower of green

laser beams on the audience. When this was done In L.A. the police received mole than five hundred phone rails from people who said they'd seen a green flying saucer that night."

America has made more bread for ELO than Europe, correct? "We're certainly much bigger In the Sta es," says Mik, "They buy the records and fill the auditoriums. Until now, I think we've only had what you might call a hard core of fans In this country. last time we appeared at the New Victoria, It was Just about full, but because of the TV cameras there, there was no real feeling to the concert, no atmosphere. You didn't know whether to play to the cameras or to the audiences.

"It's always great to come home to Britain, to go found the corner and have a drink in the pub with your mates, (That what they were planning to do after we'd finished the Interview).

"I think with the new album ('A New World Record') and the single really taking off, we might be taking off at last in this country. I hope so. I think we're starting a fan club here,"

Old' Ben was a careful man, never spent a penny without careful consld- erauon, and was cur- rently wondering what stock to order from the company salesman, who would he returning soon to take his order. The rep was one Bobby Scratchltt, a sharp character Ben thought, and one who couldn't be trusted. AU he was after w'as his money.

Ben sorted restlessly among the samples, wracking his brain as to what would sell in vast quantities and make him lots of profit Christmas was such a miserable time of the year, he thought as he put the first record on LAURIE. WHEN LINDA McCartney started taking pictures, she was working as a reception- ist for a New York magazine. She took an invitation to a

Roiling Stones' party and rolled up with her camera. The only photographer there she suddenly found herself very much in demand.

"My father used to say 'If you want to be a photogra- pher go and work for a

professional. Get Trained.' But i never had the patience."

Like every photographer, she has a story to tell for every shot.

"I. gave Jimi Hendrix most of the best pictures I took of him. I would go over and he'd look through them and he'd

take all my colour transparencies and put them in his briefcase and I'd never

see them again and now I

guess I never will." Linda also did a session

with Jim Morrison, while she

was working as the house

photographer for the Fillmore East. However, Martin Luther King was killed the same week so the Morrison shots had to wait while more important news

took precedence. She really likes to take

pictures of her family, or of the band. "The light in

1 NO JOKES about plain sailing, or being on the crest of a wave . because that wasn't how Billy Ocean was feeling at all.

Ills new single, 'Stop Me (If You've Heald It All Before)' had just leapt Into the Top SO, and he was appearing on 'Top Of The Pops' for the first time in six months, no I wan expecting him to be In high spirit.. But Instead, he admitted he was feeling a bit down.

He'd just finished the final run . through before the show proper, and was wishing he could have another bash at It: "II just didn't feel right," he frowned.

We were sitting In Billy's dressing room at the BBC - a drab little cupboard that would be depressing at the best of limo,. And, It noon became clear, this was definitely not the best of times for Billy I

Ile'd had a hag day - up at six n' clock In the morning to fly In to London from Germany, where he'd been appearing the night before. And now, 12 boors later, the early start was taking Its tall.

"I'm feeling really edgy," he told me. "I'm not usually like this - it's just that I've been working so hard lately. All I seem to have been doing for the last two week. in flying back and forward, in and out of Germany."

These two week. were also Billy's first real experience of life on the road. Although he's had several hit singles, both here and en the continent, he's never appeared live before - and in fact, he's always said he didn't want tel

"I'll be In Austr,alla and New Zealand for about »even weeks," he said, "no Fil probably be there over Christmas. Then I go on to Japan, lag Angeles and las Vegas and then home again In the New 1 car.

When he cornea home, Billy intends to forma permanent band and tour Britain for the first time

He'll also be shirting Ids next album, which he promises will be a surprise to everyone who's used to the sound of the Billy Ocean singles - fun, but as he admit., himself, not exactly memorable.

"I think It's ten soon for rote to have a final change of sound," he sold. "I've made my name through very poppy None" - r le% well - produced songs that are node specifically tar Radio One, and for playing In the discos.

"But they're songs that just Came and go, and I think that, sooner or later, the public are going to turn round and may, 'Right, now let's hear what you can really dot' So when the time Is right, I'd like to get a little more serious.

"I'd like to do something a bit more meaningful. Take Chi- cago's recent hit, for Instance. That was a pop song, but It was deeper than usual - you wouldn't forget it, just like that "

So what in It that evokes a song like that deeper than the ethers? Billy looks thoughtful.

"Thai's a good question," he said after a moment "What dos make it deeper? I think, baNcally, It's writing something that's a bit different - snosething that doesn't sound manufre. tared.

"Yeah, I'll admit some of my stuff does sound manufactured - but that'. what the public seem. to want, so MM.,. okay. I wouldn't knock it

"But I'd like to get into other things in the future. I think people expect you to move on. It's the same with any artist who's been around for a while. Take Stevie Wonder for Instance; he Started nut doing the same sort of things as fin doing now, and he gradually changed, Imul now, he's become a well respected artist.
