2019 Annual Report

2 Ignite POTENTIAL WWW.BBBSCM.ORG 3

Dear Friends, Family & Supporters, Who We SERVEWe are so honored that you have decided to engage in our mission

by reading this Annual Report! 2019 was an exciting year of expected

transitions, new successes, and igniting the potential of the

thousands of volunteers and kids in our programs!

First and foremost, aside from the return of our agency CEO, Jeff Chin, the agency enjoyed some exciting new developments that

enhanced our ability to serve children in need of positive, reliable

mentors. We reorganized our program service delivery to include

more regionally based staff teams and structure, and implemented

for the first time Regional Program Directors. This model not only augmented our ability to structure our programs between our two

offices, but also launched professional development opportunities for

staff members and new roles within the teams. The result was a promotion for seven key staff members, and

the addition of some wonderfully talented new staff members to our array of mentoring programs.

One notable addition to our portfolio of programs included the inauguration of our new Mazie Mentoring Program site at Marlborough High School. After months of research, due diligence, and fundraising, we were pleased to open this third site for our Mazie Mentoring Programs, which specialize in serving high

school students. The Marlborough Public Schools, in addition to many other community partners, fully

supported this new program with secured pledges for at least the first four years!

In addition to this exciting expansion of the Mazie Mentoring Programs, we have also secured support

for expansion of our highly regarded Bigs in Blue program, a national program through Big Brothers Big Sisters of America which pairs police officers as mentors with children at risk. Building upon our successful

Bigs in Blue program with the Worcester Police Department, we have recently secured support to start a

new Bigs in Blue program in partnership with the Framingham Police Department. This expansion, coupled

with the continued growth of our Worcester Bigs in Blue program, has created the largest Bigs in Blue

program in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Lastly, this fall we completed a months-long Strategic Planning process for the organization. This process

included participation from a wide representation of our key stakeholders, including our staff, Board of

Directors, volunteers, donors, families, and community partners. Through a series of facilitated sessions led

by our Strategic Planning Committee, our organization produced a new three year Strategic Plan to help guide the agency into the next phase of development and evolution. Please be on the lookout for your copy

of this new Strategic Plan, as we will publish and deliver it to our diverse network early in 2020.

Finally, we want to give a BIG shout out to our incredible Board of Directors — not only did they help

guide the agency through Jeff’s deployment last year, but also significantly contributed to our nascent

endowment vehicle, The Bob Cousy Legacy Fund, created in partnership with our great friends, Charlie and Maureen Tillett. The Board also grew in size and has never been more diverse or representative of the

communities we serve as they are now. We are certainly excited to see our agency grow thanks to their

partnership and stewardship of our mission.

We understand that children facing adversity are in great need of strong mentoring from reliable and

positive role models. THANK YOU ALL, we are so excited about what potential this past year has garnered,

and what will be ignited this coming year because of YOU!

Warmest Regards,

Margaret Melo Sullivan Jeffrey K. Chin, MSW, LCSW

BBBS C.A.R.E.S. Often during evaluations and match-support meetings, BBBS staff become aware of situations in which a child or their family need more services in addition to mentoring, so we created

BBBS C.A.R.E.S. (Creating Access to Resources and Emergency Support). Through this initiative, we can

connect our families with other supportive agencies that provide critical items needed by families, such

as food, clothing, emergency loans, holiday help and other support to help get them through challenging

times. By providing these types of services to the families engaged with Big Brothers Big Sisters, we aim

to decrease the stresses that children may experience at home.

Let’s Go Big Let’s Go Big was a brand new program offered in 2019. The Let’s Go Big

program is designed to provide matches an

opportunity to experience new and exciting

outdoor activities that they may not have a

chance to experience otherwise. The goal

is to help our Littles learn to appreciate the

environment, disconnect from technology,

and gain confidence. In 2019, matches who

participated in Let’s Go Big hiked several

mountains including Wachusett and

Monadnock, learned how to kayak, and went

on a bicycle ride. The matches loved spending

time with other matches and experiencing

something new together.

the organization and to their “Little”. This award is named in honor of

Dr. H. Martin Deranian, who embodied the selfless and devoted spirit of

an ideal mentor.

Maurice “Moe” BoisvertMaurice “Moe” Boisvert, CEO Emeritus of YOU

Inc., stepped in to help Big Brothers Big Sisters as

the Interim Executive Director while CEO, Jeffrey

Chin, served in Afghanistan for 8 months in 2018,

providing the organization with tremendous

experience and leadership.

The Worcester Police DepartmentThe Worcester Police Department was selected for

their partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters to

launch the Bigs in Blue program, a new initiative

where children are matched with police officers

as mentors. Thanks to the WPD, the Bigs in Blue

Program was piloted in Fall, 2018 and matched 10

children in the first year.

Mary Van MamerenMary Van Mameren has served as a Big Sister to her Little Julia for 4

years. Through their time together, Mary stands out as a remarkable

Big Sister because of her focus on building confidence and bravery

in her Little Sister. Mary is dedicated not only to her Little, but goes

above and beyond for BBBS and serves on the event committee

for Bowl for Kids’ Sake, where she helps plan the event, recruits

attendees, and raises money to support our important mission.

Ryan Kittredge Ryan Kittredge got involved with Big Brothers

Big Sisters as a Big Brother over 10 years ago.

Ryan has served on the BBBS Board of Directors

since 2016. Before his time on the Board, he was

an active Corporator and founding member of

our BBBS Alumni & Friends Group. Ryan takes

an active role in fundraising for the agency,

particularly through the Rodman Ride for Kids

where he personally raises well over $5,000 each

year to support our programs and recruits others

to support as well. Ryan is a true ambassador

for the agency and has not only spread the word

about our mission everywhere he goes, but also

helps recruit new Board members and volunteers

to help us thrive.

Kaden & Andrew Kaden and Andrew have been matched since the fall of 2016 at

Assumption College. When Kaden was introduced to the Big Brothers

Big Sisters program he was a very energetic child and had some

challenges with his grades and homework. The changes in Kaden’s

behavior have been remarkable: he has been getting along with his

peers, and he has a group of friends now who he likes to play with at

recess. Kaden’s teachers says that he has done a complete 180 degree

turn from where he was last year; he always completes his homework

on time and is giving forward a lot more effort.

My family was first involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters in October

2016. My son Jariel, 8 years old at the time, attended the Boys & Girls

Club of Worcester after school and BBBS is one of the many programs

offered there. Not only did Jariel want a Big Brother because all his

friends had one, but because as an only child, he thought this was his

chance to be able to call someone his brother for once! As a parent,

I learned more about the program and thought it would be a great

experience for my son to have someone to look up to and receive extra

support in his academics, peer relations and social skills. I made it a

point to include in the application that Jariel is a BIG fan of basketball

and it would be awesome if his Big Brother was also a fan.

A month later, Jariel was matched with Matthew. A freshman student

from the College of the Holy Cross. Matthew had experience working

with children in the past and stated that he would be most helpful

with math, and was into sports, especially basketball! They were a

perfect match! Jariel was very shy at first but was so excited to have

someone he could call his Big Brother. Now, Jariel has someone who

is dedicated to him, helps him with any difficulties he is having in

school, and they have so much in common on a personal level.

Near the end of 2017, I noticed a job opening at Big Brothers Big

Sisters and thought it would be a great opportunity for me. I

saw firsthand the impact mentoring has on a child, as well as the

volunteer, and was very interested in being able to get a chance to be

a part of that for others. I was hired at BBBS in February 2018 and it

has been great ever since. I have a deep fulfillment of being able to

match mentors with children who need it the most and having them

genuinely look forward to it every week! I am grateful to have found

BBBS not only as a career path, but also as a life experience for my son

which he will remember and cherish for years to come.

Jariel is now 11 years old and he and Matthew have been matched for

almost four years. Matthew is currently a senior in college and will

be graduating in the Spring of 2020 with a major in Accounting. He

has helped Jariel with his academics as well as issues that have arisen

throughout the years. He has even gone out of his way to attend one

of Jariel’s local basketball games as well as joining us in attending a

Boston Celtics game together. Moments like these have made their

Carrie and her Mentee, Kim, were matched in 2019

through the Mazie Mentoring Program at Waltham

High School. The pair meets for at least 8 hours each

month doing fun activities, but they also focus on

setting Kim’s goals as part of the Mazie Goal Program.

Kim was recommended to the Mazie Mentoring

Program by a professional at Waltham High school

who saw that she was a motivated student, but was

very shy because of her language barriers. Originally

from Guatemala, Kim began her time at Waltham High

School as part of the English as a Second Language

Program. Kim is an incredibly hard working and

dedicated student, however, as a first-generation high

school student in the U.S., did not have easy access to

the many opportunities afforded to other students

and families.

With the support of Carrie, Kim was able to expand her

opportunities and become a more confident and self-

advocating student. Carrie’s warmth and fun attitude

has empowered Kim to come out of her shell. As part of

the Mazie Mentoring Program, Carrie has felt that she

too has gained a lot from the program.

Kim is on track to graduate from Waltham High School

in June 2021. With college a few years away, Kim has

shown interest in a career in nursing and with Carrie

by her side has been able to take different First Aid

Courses in the community. Kim and Carrie have been

able to develop a deep and personal friendship that will

blossom to a lifelong friendship!

Our PROGRAMSMazie Mentoring ProgramThe Mazie Mentoring Program matches high school students at Framingham, Waltham, and Marlborough High Schools with

community volunteers who meet with their mentees outside of school each week. In addition to mentoring, the Mazie Mentoring

Program awards students for setting and achieving personal goals, preparing them for graduation and helping them understand the

steps necessary to achieve their goals.

Worcester Area College Mentors ProgramWe partner with a number of local colleges to recruit mentors to meet with their Littles at local program sites. In fact, we have over 700

college students serving as Bigs, making us the largest network of college mentors in the country. Currently, our college partners are:

Assumption College, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, Nichols College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

“The Mazie Program has helped me in different aspects of my life both academic and personal. My mentor has helped me dream bigger and make new goals for myself.”

~ Kim Rodriguez, Mentee

“Kim and I always have a great time together despite some language barriers, as we are always laughing and having fun. Kim constantly inspires me as she excels in her new life in the United States, despite the amount of adversity she has faced at such a young age.” ~ Carrie Benis, Mentor

Getting to know Gianni over the past year, and learning

about who she is, has been a great experience! I grew up as

an only child, a girly-girl, not athletic or competitive, really

into art, and even went to college for art. Gianni is a twin

with two other siblings, is

the only girl on her football

team, is competitive, is a bit

tom-boy, and she dreams

to be the first female NFL

player! Despite these

differences, we have many

similarities that allow us

to have fun and connect!

Although Gianni is quiet and

shy, she is very confident.

Gianni likes to joke around,

laugh, and do all sorts of

activities together — an

excellent match!

I have learned that it can

be difficult to read Gianni’s

emotions sometimes (Is

she enjoying herself? Does

she like me?), but there are

a couple moments in our

friendship that stand out to

me and help me realize that

I truly am making an impact.

The first example occurred

after we had known each other for about a month. Gianni

repeated a phrase that I commonly said while playing games

when I would make a shot or win a point, “Ya buddyyyy!” She

used the phrase when she had made a shot and it made me

grin ear to ear — I was actually making an impact on this

little girl!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & Metrowest has

a corporate site-based mentoring program at Hanover

Insurance in Worcester. The Hanover Insurance employees

who participate in the program are matched with Littles

from the Worcester Arts Magnet School. In March 2017,

Brent Gilmore was one of those employees who decided to

sign up as a Big. Brent was matched with his Little, Sam.

Their relationship grew as they met consistently through the

program for two years.

In 2019, Brent and Sam decided to grow their relationship

even more by engaging in the Site-Based Plus program. This is

an opportunity for our site-based matches, like those created

through Hanover Insurance, to build their relationship by

acting as a Community Match and are able to do all sorts of

activities within the community. Site-Based Plus matches are

able to build on a relationship with a strong foundation by

doing activities they are both passionate about.

Soon after signing up to be a Site-Based Plus match, Brent

and Sam heard about our new initiative, Let’s Go Big. The

Let’s Go Big program is designed to provide matches

an opportunity to experience new and exciting outdoor

activities that they may not have a chance to experience

otherwise. The goal is to help our Littles learn to appreciate

the environment, disconnect from technology, and gain

confidence. Sam and Brent participated in three Let’s Go

Big events throughout the summer season including hiking

at Purgatory Chasm, kayaking on Lake Quinsigamond, and

Corporate Site-Based Mentoring ProgramBig Brothers Big Sisters partners with a number of corporate groups to recruit volunteers to meet with their Littles at program sites

such as schools or afterschool program locations. We work with these groups to fit mentoring conveniently into their work schedules.

Some of our partners include: Avidia Bank, Bose, Dell EMC, The Hanover Insurance Group, MathWorks, Middlesex Savings Bank,

Staples, TJX, Unum, and more.

Community-Based MentoringThe Community-Based Mentoring Program matches children with volunteer Bigs from the local community. After the Big and Little

meet for the first time, it is up to the Big, Little, and Little’s family to plan visits and activities approximately three to four times per

month. Community-based matches enjoy a range of activities including trips to the library, going to a local park, attending a sport

event, or going out to eat. Additionally, the Site-Based Plus program allows Site-Based matches to build upon their relationship to act

as a Community-Based match.

Our PROGRAMS

The other special moment happened at our first meeting

after summer break, which happened to be the day before

Halloween. I went to Africa on a missions trip with my

church earlier in October and brought her back a little red

and black carved elephant (her

favorite colors) and added it to

a Halloween goody bag. After

she opened the bag of goodies,

she put everything back in the

bag except the elephant, which

she wanted to hold and look

at longer. This also made me

smile. I picked something out

that she liked!

The small wins keep me going

and reassure me that I am

doing something right! I want

the best for Gianni and want

her to remember this time in

her life as uplifting and full

of joy. I really enjoy our time

together and have grown

quite fond of her, and I think

she of me. She is proud to tell

me of her accomplishments in

school and in sports and I’m

thrilled when she tells me how

well she’s doing! Gianni really

lights up at her wins and so

do I. I look forward to that hour every Wednesday. Thank you,

BBBSCM for matching us, allowing both of us to learn and

grow, and creating this space for the kids to do something

new and different that is so beneficial.

hiking up Mount Monadnock. Sam is an active child and he

thrived during these experiences. During the Let’s Go Big

adventures, Sam and Brent spent their time laughing with

each other, talking their way through the adventures, and

overall having a great time while experiencing something

new together. It was evident to those around that Sam’s

personality was easily complimented by Brent’s cool and

calm demeanor. Simply, two really great friends hanging out,

silly and comfortable with each other.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & Metrowest are

excited to continue the Let’s Go Big program in the future.

We hope to see Brent and Sam join us in the great outdoors

on the next adventure!

Help us Ignite POTENTIAL Through a Legacy Gift

The “Bob Cousy Legacy Fund” was created in 2018 to help build an endowment that will ensure that Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to ignite the potential of every child well into the future. Maureen and Charlie Tillett, two of our most generous supporters, have made a commitment of $50,000 over five years to help match contributions to this fund. If you want to plan a legacy gift that keeps giving, please contact Jeffrey Chin, CEO, at 508-752-7868 ext. 11 for the many ways to give a child an opportunity to have a positive adult mentor.
