Introduction

The 2020 Team BCPS Haiku Contest began on March 1 in typical fashion. Students at all grade levels were invited to craft an original haiku on the theme of Hero. Early entries echoed appreciation for superhero characters, as well as love for family members.

The global COVID-19 pandemic prompted the statewide closure of school buildings beginning March 16. This crisis has upended lives across the world as families face unprecedented health and economic challenges.

Our fourth annual contest continued with an extended deadline as we hoped that school buildings would reopen within a few weeks. Entries understandably demonstrated a new focus on the heroes of these times, including essential workers in the broadest sense.

The best feedback we could have ever received was appreciation from a teacher whose students were so thankful to have a creative outlet during the state’s stay-at-home order. It was our pleasure to serve our students in this way.

By the end of the contest, 1,446 haiku had flowed in from 99 schools and centers. Students expressed everything from finding the hero within, the sacrifices and courage involved in being a hero, heroes throughout history, and heroes in their everyday lives.

Choosing just one winner from each school level was an enormous task for the judging panel of students and staff, but three winners were chosen:

• Ella Navari, Grade 4, Prettyboy Elementary School

• Kiran Bhatia, Grade 7, Dumbarton Middle School

• Maggie Else, Grade 10, Dulaney High School

Each winner earned the following: gift cards from The Charmery, The Ivy Bookshop, and Ukazoo Books, four game tickets each from the Baltimore Orioles (plans for the 2020 schedule were pending), and a framed poster of their haiku from BCPS.

4

The haiku were judged by a 21-member panel, including staff from the Department of Communications and Community Outreach, Office of English Language Arts, and Division of Human Resources, and nine student poets: Lori Ackerman, Grade 9, Dulaney High; Peyton Davis, Grade 10, Catonsville High; Claire Doll, Grade 12, Catonsville High; Sophia Framm, Grade 12, Franklin High; Nadia Karber, Grade 12, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology; Autumn Koors Foltz, Grade 12, Carver Center; Nola Mak, Grade 11, Hereford High; Preethi Pai, Grade 10, Hereford High; and Joshua Torrence, Grade 12, Carver Center.

An additional 162 haiku were chosen by the judges to compile this book. Student artwork was selected to complement each section of the book.

The Haiku Contest is only possible through the support and enthusiasm of BCPS teachers and students. We celebrate and honor our writers and artists for their contributions, and we hope you enjoy this book.

* Please note that poems are presented as submitted, without corrections to writers’ spelling and grammar.
