ENJOYABLE DISCOVERIES ALONG THE WATER…

Namur is a city of water, nestling at the intersection of the magnificent Meuse and Sambre valleys. Whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it here.

Namur reveals its charm and its way of life along the water’s edge, as well. Set sail on the delightful Namourettes - small, retro-style boats, ride along the quayside of the Meuse and the Sambre rivers on a bicycle or in a rickshaw… Stop for a delicious meal in a restaurant at the water’s edge or make the most of a ter-race with a view over the Citadel and the confluence of the city’s two rivers…

Be carried along by the current as you take a cruise and explore the waterways of Namur. Discover the Mosan villas dot-ted along the river banks, the Parlia-ment of Wallonia set between the river and the Citadel, the strawberry museum and much more besides.

There is no lack of sports and nautical activities here. Hire a catamosan (boat which does not require a licence) from the Capitainerie and enjoy navigating along the Meuse at your own pace. Con-quer the Meuse on a stand-up paddle, experience marvellous sensations with a blob jump or try sailing and kayaking!

Set in the heart of Old Namur, just a stone’s through from the Cathedral, the museum complex known as Les Bateliers hosts exhibitions, conferences, concerts, plays and other events throughout the year in an outstanding site comprising an 18th-century mansion, a 19th-century chapel and a contemporary gallery.

The Museum of Decorative Arts is set in the former private home of the counts of Groes-beeck and the marquises of Croix, enhanced by a garden in the French style, which evokes the atmosphere of a nobleman’s residence during the Age of the Enlightenment. Alongside it, the Museum of Archaeology (currently undergoing work) aims to offer visi-tors the chance to rediscover archaeological collections devoted to the Namur region in a brand-new exhibition space.

Les Bateliers is a real island of culture connecting the Félicien Rops provincial mu-seum, the Maison de la Poésie poetry centre and the Maison du Conte storytelling centre through public gardens that hold temporary exhibitions and permanent works (poem chairs by Quebec sculptor Michel Goulet, fresco by Tamar Kasparian, miniature sculp-tures by Spanish artist Isaac Cordal). The site is to include an auditorium, educational rooms and shortly a restaurant and a boutique.

Partial opening of the Museum of Decorative Arts during temporary exhibi-tions; Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, Sunday from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm - Closed on Mondays. Unaccompanied visit (admission free). Guided tour for groups upon request.

UP FOR SOMETHING “SWEET”? Try the Wepion strawberries, bursting with sugar and a bright red colour. You will not be able to resist either the sweet and crunchy taste of caramel coated nuts known as “Biétrumés,” whose name is inspired by a colourful character of Namur who’s quite a joker. These little marvels can be enjoyed at the Maison des desserts, the high delicacy cavern in Namur. The ideal accompaniment for these delicacies is a nice coffee from the Maison Delahaut where coffee beans are roasted several times a day right in the shop before your very eyes.

DELICACIES NOT TO BE MISSED… A brief stopover at the Belgo-Belge bistro, some discoveries in the Empreinte Belge shop, or delicatessen specialities and spirits at the Caves de Wallonie, gastronomy à la carte or in a set menu at the Espièglerie, or tapas at the Bouchon Namurois, a nice little dish at the Temps de Cerises, a good glass of wine at Vino Vino, and matching fare! And then there is the double location for rest and the senses... The Royal Snail design hotel and the Agathopède restaurant, etc., etc… Namur is unquestionably the capital of delicacy and refinement!

OR PERHAPS SOMETHING “SALTY?” Try the “Petits-Gris de Namur” [snails] that feature prominently in local gastronomy and are also the symbol of the city. Regale yourself with avisance (minced meat in puff pastry), served hot or warm. To slake your thirst, taste a “Blanche de Namur” (Brasserie du Bocq), a “Houppe” (Brasserie Artisanale de Namur), a “Philomène” (Brasserie du Clocher) or one of the wine vintages from the Mosan Valley (Domaine du Chenoy, Ry d’Argent, Château Bon Baron) – and make sure you do not overlook the traditional “Péket” (juniper) which has its finest hour during the traditional “Fêtes de Wallonie” [Wallonia Festivities].

Whether sweet or salty, our delicacies are to enjoy or take away at Made in Namur, a self-service outlet featuring a full range of local and regional products.

THE MAISON DES DESSERTS [DESSERT HOUSE] HAS A PROUD HISTORY OF THREE GENERATIONS IN THE HUCORNE FAMILY. The Fronville chocolate factory was created in 1946 by Mrs Fronville, the aunt of Mr Etienne de Hucorne. The latter, a confectioner and chocolate maker, took over the chocolate factory with his wife when his aunt discontinued operations in 1974. In 1993, he opened a tea room in the Saint-Loup quarter of old Namur.

Today, Claire and Etienne de Hucorne and their two sons run two unmissable establishments on the Namur landscape with an expert hand: the Fronville chocolate factory, situated on the Rue de Fer provides different varieties of chocolate, but also Biétrumé, Namuco and Fély, whereas the Maison des Desserts, situated on the Rue Haute Marcelle, serves a choice of pastries, chocolates, macaroons as well as trendy snacks in the exceptional setting of a 17th century building.

This centre of creativity, unique in northern Europe, provides all visitors with an understanding of the different steps involved in producing a fine perfume. These perfumes are carefully crafted and matured deep in the cellars of the

Citadel, silent witnesses from the days of Charles the Fifth !This «Light, sound and perfume» show is such that the outside world is rapidly forgotten.
