the winter. Makes a nice
houseplant. Likes full

garden performance
during hot weather conditions.
CALENDULA Sunlight: Full sun to
partial shade
Height: 18 to 24 inches
Spacing: 24 to 36 inches
apart in all directions.
Growing calendula
(Calendula officinalis)
provides a spectacular display. Sun-loving plants
are usually low and compact with attractive light
yellow to deep orange blooms from early summer
until frost. Double blossoms can be 2-1/2 to 4 inches
across. Gorgeous in patio pots or mixed borders.
Calendula’s edible flowers and spicy leaves add zest
to summer salads and will draw plenty of ooohs and
ahhs when presented in a meal. Used in salves,
lotions and balms, the daisy-like flower is more
than a pretty face. It’s anti-inflammatory and
antibacterial properties are valued for soothing and
restoring the skin. Cold hardy annual, 18-24” tall.
CLEOME - Plants

summer until frost in a
dense, 6-8”wide flower

that grow to 3” long

anthers. Cleome petals
may be white, pink,
rose or purple and may
be visited by hummingbirds, hummingbird moths,
many types of bees and butterflies. Bats are thought
to be the main Pollinator in it’s native tropical
habitat. Many types have no noticeable fragrance,
while others are very fragrant, often described as a
musky, sweet and pungent, or spicy scent. Cleome
can be an excellent, striking cut flower that will
self-sew for next year.
HERBS $3.50 6-pack)
BASIL Cinnamon & Lemon- (half and half) –
Basil has been called
the king of herbs. It is
an annual that needs
full sun, rich well-
drained soil and
protection from cold winds 6-pack
It is classified as a warming and moistening herb. Baisil is a fragrant and gentle herb that can be brewed as a tea and is used abundantly in cooking. It
is a good companion plant for tomatoes, helping them
to grow strong and healthy, ward off insects.
OREGANO
Oregano is an
aggressive plant that
likes to spread and a
bush of oregano can
grow quite large if you
allow it. The stems can also grow up to 2 feet high
and will often lay down on the ground, particularly
when the plant is young or in the shade. For these
two reasons, it is best to give your oregano plants
plenty of room in the garden. Oregano is a satisfying
herb for any gardener. It is easy to grow and care for,
as long as it does not remain wet for too long.
Oregano grows very well in partial sun, making it a
good choice for an indoor garden as well.
PARSLEY Parsley is a lush plant
growing up to a foot
high in a beautiful
rosette of green foliage.
Try growing parsley
plants as companions
annuals, perennials,
and herbs in beds,
containers, and window boxes. containers, and
window boxes. Plants make a nice seasonal edging
and provide a striking contrast to colorful annuals,
like yellow pansies or bright pink petunias. Set
plants in full sun or partial shade and rich, moist
soil. Keep the soil moist. Keep roots cool and moist
by mulching around the plant, but don’t cover the
crown of the plant or the plant will risk getting rot.
In September, promote new foliage by cutting back
plants set out in the spring; this is especially true
for parsley plants grown in vegetable and herb beds
strictly for their harvest.
PEPPERMINT kitchen companions,
mints are used as
*garden accents,
*ground covers,
*air fresheners, and
*herbal medicines.
They’re as beautiful as they are functional, and
they’re foolproof to grow, thriving in sun and
shade all over North America. In fact, mint can
be vigorous spreaders, so be careful where you
plant it.
THYME
Aromatic leaves: season meats, poultry,
stews, sauces, soups
and dressings. Growing
and harvesting your
own thyme is like
having a little pot of
gold. The tiny little
leaves are the prize.
Thyme is like gold - I always
feel rich when I have a small
jar around.
CILANTRO
Needs full sun or light
shade in southern zones
since it bolts quickly in
hot weather.
It grows best in a well-
drained, moist soil.
Cilantro plants should
be spaced about 6” to 8” inches apart. To harvest
fresh cilantro all season, make successive sowings
every 2 to 3 weeks starting in late spring. From the
time of sowing seed, cilantro leaves can begin to be
harvested in about 3 to 4 weeks. Cilantro seeds can
be harvested in about 45 days.

If you love the look of
impatiens but your
flower beds get strong
sunshine for part of the
day, New Guinea
impatiens will fill your
yard with color.

lovers, New Guinea impatiens flowers tolerate up to
half a day of sun in most parts of the country. These
colorful blooms come in bright shades from lavender
to orange, spanning the rainbow with a choice of
bedding colors. Keep the plants well-watered
throughout the hottest parts of the year. Flower
beds on the east side of a building, which get
morning sunshine and afternoon shade, are ideal
locations for these plants. Each plant will grow into
a rounded mound, and if planted 18 inches apart,
they’ll grow to fill in the entire space in a matter of
weeks. None of the varieties of this plant can
tolerate drought very well, so keep the soil moist
with soaker hoses or other watering devices. This
plant can be a heavy feeder, so give it monthly
feedings of a low-nitrogen plant food.
