A CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS | Teso – Karamoja Region

PREFACEThe Avian biodiversity of the Teso-Karamoja Region is poorly studied, perhaps the least studied of all regions of Uganda. Clive F. Mann (1976) who doc-umented the birds of the Teso region in the mid-1970s, attributed the few ornithological studies in the Teso region to the comparatively uninteresting geography of the region. The region was not only similar to that of most parts of the country but also lacked in iconic features such as mountains and ‘true forests’. However this was not a true per-ception of the region. Despite the “uninteresting geography” the region is covered by five biomes including Somali-masai, Sudan guinea, Victoria ba-sin, Highland and a secondary Endemic Bird Area where the only endemic bird in Uganda is found. On the other hand, the lack of comprehensive studies on Karamoja’s birds has been due to insecurity as a result of cattle-rustling related conflicts (in the dry season). Also the region has had inaccessible roads that are frequently flooded (in the wet season).
Nonetheless, the swamps of North-east Uganda are recognized as a Secondary Endemic Bird Area due to the presence of Fox’s Weaver which is confined to Lake Kyoga basin. Previously there was reported breeding record at Rhino Camp but no more records have been reported since 1989. The region with its overlapping vegetation zones has characteristic bird species that are not found anywhere else in the country. The Sudan-guinea biome that cuts through northern half of Uganda from west Nile to Mt Elgon has species such as the Fox Kestrel, White Crest-ed Turaco, Somali-Masai biome that cuts through the north-east part of Karamoja area has 32 spe-cies that are not found in other parts of Uganda including Pale Chanting Goshawk, Yellow-necked Spurfowl, Karamoja Apalis, White-headed Buffalo Weaver and many others.
With growing interest in the region’s biodiversity, it is hoped that the information provided by this checklist will benefit tourists, researchers, and nature enthusiasts and help to raise more enthusiasm that may enrich this bird list in future.

Despite the richness of the region in birds, the region has not been a key destination for birders and birding. Whereas the region is poorly studied, even the information known has not been available such as this checklist of the birds. Available records were scattered in various reports that are not in public domain. Therefore the aim of producing this booklet is to collate and compile a comprehensive list of the birds of the region as a quick search for researchers and visitors.
The checklist is based on actual species recorded through NatureUganda’s research programmes over the last 25 years. In addition to a comprehensive review of literature and studies by NBDB, UWA, NFA and consultation with bird guides. Other previous ornithological work and publications including the Birds of Teso District (1976), Checklist of the Birds of Uganda’s National Parks (Wilson 1995), the Important Bird Areas in Uganda (Byaruhanga et al 2001), National Biodiversity Databank records, Bird Atlas of Uganda (Car-swell et al., 2005), the Birds of East Africa (Stevenson & Fanshawe 2005), Checklist of Birds of Uganda (NatureUganda 2012), State of Birds in Ugan-da (NatureUganda 2014), and Forest Biodiversity Survey reports (1996).
With growing interest in the region’s biodiversity, it is hoped that the in-formation provided by this checklist will benefit tourists, researchers, and nature enthusiasts and help to raise more enthusiasm that may enrich this bird list in future.

A CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS | Teso – Karamoja Region
12
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION1.1 Physiography & ClimateThis bird checklist covers the Teso-Karamoja region measuring approximate area of 40,000 km² situated in North-eastern Uganda, 17% of Uganda’s to-tal area (241,550 km2). The area comprises of the two major Sub-regions the Teso Sub-region (13,000 km²) and the Karamoja Sub-region (27,000 km²). The Teso-Karamoja region is bordered by the Acholi and Lango sub-regions to the West; Busoga, Bugisu and Sebei sub-regions to the South; Kenya to the East; and South-Sudan to the North. The checklist does not cover Teso territories in the districts of Tororo and Busia “Southern Teso”.
The Teso – Karamoja region, like most of the landscape in Uganda lies most-ly between 1000 – 1500m above sea level. The Teso region is lying mostly between 1000 – 1300m entirely devoid of mountains the highest point (1656 m) being an out crop of Mt. Napak at Katakwi district’s north-east border with Napak District. The Karamoja region, consists of a low-lying plain in the south-western part bordering the Lake Opeta that gradually rises north-wards and eastwards towards the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley (Turkana Escarpment) at the Kenya – Uganda border. Although most of the Karamoja region lies between 1000 – 1500m, rising from the plains are a number of mountains and hills, notably Mt. Kadam 3063m about 70 km north of Mt. Elgon, Mt. Napak 2500m about 60 km to the north-west of Mt. Kadam, Mt. Moroto 3083m about 70 km north-east of Mt. Napak, and Mt. Morongole (2750m) to the north in Kidepo National Park.
The Teso region although lacking in mountains, is largely made up of wet-lands of the Lake Kyoga Basin comprised of permanent papyrus swamps fringing the major Lakes Kyoga, Bisina and Opeta that transition into sea-sonally flooded wooded grasslands. Flowing in and out of the lakes are numerous rivers many of which are seasonal especially in the north-eastern part of Teso. Due to its topography, Teso is essentially a flood plain prone to flooding as a result of discharges from the surrounding hilly areas of Sebei and Karamoja. The Karamoja region on the other hand is drained by nu-merous seasonal rivers that flow from the hills in the east through the plains and valleys discharging their waters towards the south and west. Most of these rivers flow filled with water from the hills especially after storms “flash floods” but shortly afterward are dry and remain so for most of the time as such they have come to be known as “Snake Rivers”.

Most of the rocks underlying the Teso – Karamoja region are of the Gneiss-Granulite Complex with the exception of Volcanic rocks in the ar-eas surrounding Mt. Kadam, Mt. Napak and Mt. Moroto. Vertisols are the dominant soil type in the region covering a large part of Karamoja and the North-eastern part of Teso. The soils of the Teso region comprise of mainly Plinthosols and Ferralsols but also include Gleysols, Fluvisols, Arenosols and Vertisols. The Karamoja region, while largely comprising of Vertisols, has a further Eighteen (18) major soil types including Acrisols, Alisols, Arenosols, Calcisols, Cambrisols, Fluvisols, Ferralsols, Gleyisols, Leptosols, Luvisols, Lixisols, Nitisols, Phaezems, Planosols, Plinthosols, Regosols, Solonets, and Umbrisols.
The climate of the Teso-Karamoja region is characterised by Tropical cli-mate in the Teso region and Semi-Arid climate in the Karamoja region. The Karamoja sub-region is the driest area of Uganda and unlike most parts of Uganda including the Teso sub-region that receive bimodal rainfall (March-June and October-December) averaging between 1000 – 1350mm of rainfall annually, the Karamoja area has a single long rainy period between March to mid-October. Annual rainfall in the Karamoja Region varies from 300 to 1000 mm.

1.2. Bird Habitats1.2.1. Major Terrestrial Ecological Zones & Vegetation types
Figure 3: The major terrestrial Eco-regions. (WWF Classification).
A CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS | Teso – Karamoja Region
17
The Teso – Karamoja region is classified into Four (4) major vegetation zones the East Sudanian savanna, the Northern Acacia-Commiphora bushlands, the Victoria Basin forest-savanna mosaic & thickets and the East African montane forests under the WWF classification system shown in Figure 3.
Previous publications such as the Bird Atlas of Uganda and Important Bird Areas of Uganda have used the Phytochoria described in (White 1983), this system also classifies the terrestrial habitats of the Teso-Karamoja region into Four (4) biomes the Sudan-Guinea Savanna Biome, Somali-Masai Bi-ome, the Lake Victoria Basin Biome, and the Afrotropical Highlands Biome.
Much of the area in the Teso – Karamoja region comprises of grasslands these have been categorized into seasonally-flooded Acacia- Hyparrhe-nia grasslands in the valleys sometimes classified as wetlands, while the plains are also covered by Butyrospermum-Hyparrhenia savannah and Combretum-Acacia-Hyparrhenia savannah (Langdale-Brown et al., 1964). Woodlands and forests are restricted to the tops of the mountains and hills forming high altitude forest and along rivers forming riverine forests.

The most prominent forests in the region are the high altitude forests of Mt. Moroto, Mt. Napak and Mt. Kadam. These three forests comprise of dry Combretum, Butyrospermum and dry Acacia savannas, with Junipe-rus-Podocarpus dry montane forest (Davenport et al., 1996). Forests are almost entirely restricted to the Karamoja region while woodlands although more common in Eastern Karamoja are widespread both in Teso and Kar-amoja.

Major Aquatic HabitatsThe open water bodies are restricted to the Teso region, the Karamoja re-gion lacks open water bodies it is for this reason that most of papyrus wet-lands are restricted to the Teso region where they fringe the Lakes Opeta, Bisina, part of Lake Kyoga and its satellite lakes. Majority of the wetlands in the Karamoja region are seasonally-flooded grasslands that extend from the papyrus wetlands following streams and rivers that flow in and out of the lakes and hills.

1.3. Key Conservation areas1.3.1. Important Bird AreasThe Teso – Karamoja region hosts 4 of the 34 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) namely, Lake Opeta, Lake Bisina, Mt. Moroto and Kidepo National Park (Byaruhanga et al., 2001). The IBAs cover the the Major habitat and land-use categories in the region i.e the Forests of Mt. Moroto, grasslands and woodlands of Kidepo, open water and wetlands of the Lake Opeta-Lake Bisina system therefore hosting all the species that occur in the region.

1.3.2. Protected AreasA quarter of the land area 10,000 km² in the Teso – Karamoja Region is pro-tected. The Teso – Karamoja region is home to Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve the second largest protected area in Uganda measuring 2000 km², this to-gether with Matheniko – Bokora Wildlife Reserve form a large network of protected areas. There are also significant Central Forest Reserves around the Labwor hills and around Kidepo National Park. Many areas outside pro-tected areas are hotspots for biodiversity such as Magoro and Ngarium in Katakwi, Iriiri in Napak and Chepskunya in Kween District.

1.4. A guide to using the checklist
The Fox’s Weaver Uganda’s only endemic bird species an icon of the Teso – Kar-amoja Region.
This checklist covers a total of 685 birds from 77 bird families that are recorded in the Teso – Karamoja region constituting 60% of all the birds known in Uganda. 34 bird species including the Fox’s Weaver, Uganda’s only endemic bird species and Karamoja Apalis, are restricted to the Soma-li-Masai Biome of the region and are not found anywhere else in Uganda.
NomenclatureThe species nomenclature and taxonomy follows field guide to ‘Birds of East Africa’ (Stevenson and Fanshawe 2005) in order to be consistent with the most popularly used bird guide in Uganda. However the species distri-bution should be carefully checked with ‘The Bird Atlas of Uganda’(Carswell et al 2005)
Description of the threat Status The checklist shows the threat category of every species using two avail-able species threat categorizations. IUCN Global (G) Red list of threatened species (https://www.iucnredlist.org) and National (N) Red list of threatened species in Uganda (MTWA 2018). Where there is no national categorization, the global (IUCN) categorization is maintained.

NatureUganda, the East Africa Natural History Society (EANHS) in Uganda, is a membership, research and conservation organization established to undertake conservation actions using scientifically proven methods for the benefit of the people and nature. It is the oldest membership organisation in Uganda, having been founded (as EANHS) in 1909 as a scientific organization with the primary aim of documenting the diversity of wildlife in East Africa.
By the mid-1990s, EANHS-Uganda had attracted many members and broadened the scope of activities in scientific research, conservation action, public awareness raising and advocacy. At this point it was realized that a formal registration within Uganda would be necessary as a response to the increasing activities. The Society was therefore registered as a non-profit, independent national organization in 1995 with the operational name of NatureUganda – The East Africa Natural History Society. Her sister in Kenya is NatureKenya – The East Africa Natural History Society.
NatureUganda has been the national Partner of BirdLife International since 1995, and the society’s programmes are based on the four well-established pillars of BirdLife global strategy, namely Species, Sites, Habitats and People.
NatureUganda’s mission is promoting the understanding, appreciation and conservation of nature. In pursuing its mission NatureUganda strives to: • Create a nature-friendly public• Enhance knowledge of Uganda’s natural history• Advocate for policies favorable to the environment• Take action to conserve priority species, sites and habitats.
NatureUganda has its secretariat in Kampala- Naguru, and services its 2,000 members and supporters though branches in Gulu, Mbale, Busitema and Mbarara.
Inspired by the original purpose of the East African Natural History Society to document natural history of East Africa, NatureUganda’s work is hinged on scientific information generated through well laid down research and monitoring programmes. Considering that 90% of Uganda’s GDP is derived from Natural Resources (tourism, forestry, fisheries), biodiversity conservation is a priority for the country. NatureUganda supports biodiversity protection and economic development through its research, monitoring and conservation programme, which provides quality scientific information mainly using birds as indicators to support local and national governments to make informed decisions. The support is provided through established partnerships with government agencies including; Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA), Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), National Forestry Authority (NFA), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Wetlands Management Department (WMD). This first edition of “The State of Uganda’s Birds” is a culmination of this collaborate effort to document the state of biodiversity in Uganda.
