SHAHEED HAKIM MOHAMMED SAIDShaheed Hakim Mohammed Said (1920-1998) established Hamdard Dawakhana Pakistan in 1948. Within few years, the herbal medicines products of Hamdard became household names. The phenomenal business success of Hamdard brands is a legendary part of the business history of Pakistan.

The name Hamdard however acquired a still wider meaning, when Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said founded Hamdard University in 1991. The establishment of a university which could enliven the intellectual traditions of the educational institutions of the Golden Era of Muslim Civilization had always been his most cherished dream. In fact, it was the central point towards which all his endeavors were directed. The founding of the University was the culmination of a long dedicated and continued effort which spanned over his whole life.

Apart from being a great educational leader, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said was also one of the finest exponents of the Eastern Medicine, who had treated millions of patients from all over the world by the time of his martyrdom (Shahadat) in October 1998. In the fifty years of his active career as a practitioner of Greco-Arab medicine par excellence, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said also achieved international fame as a scholar and researcher in medicine. In recognition of his meritorious services and scholarly achievements, he was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Posthumous) by the Government of Pakistan, in 2002.

As a prolific writer, he had to his credit a large number of books and articles. He edited many research journals and periodicals on medicine, history and Islam. Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said also created two effective national forums: Hamdard Shura (for public opinion leaders) and Hamdard Naunehal Assembly (for children). He attended and read papers at numerous conferences all over the world and organized a number of international conferences for promotion of science in Pakistan in collaboration with national and international organizations including UNESCO and WHO. He also held important offices and memberships of dozens of national and international organization related to education and healthcare, the fields to which his contributions are universally acknowledged.

A man of Herculean intellect and organizational capabilities, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said will be remembered most for creating Hamdard University, which he envisioned to become one of the top institutions of higher education and learning in Pakistan.

Hamdard University has always been at the forefront in promoting the cause of education, research, healthcare and social welfare in Pakistan. Indeed, we are proud of our 28-years journey which is the evidence of our outstanding achievements at all levels.

2019 – 20 is a year to commemorate the 100 years of our Founder-Chancellor, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, who envisioned education as a mission to make minds and not mere careers. Our students and faculty are committed to serving the society with their notable contributions, which reassures and furthers the ambition of our Founder. It is delightful that this Annual Report gathers many of these accomplishments from the past year, and reflects the sincere dedication of all the people who are rendering their efforts to building the future of Hamdard University.

Our struggle radiates through the progress we have made. We shall abide by our utmost responsibility to encourage students in becoming the next leaders of the world. We are committed to ensuring that this institution is a constructive place for every individual to learn and grow. I am proud of where we stand today, and optimistic that Hamdard University will keep the journey towards success continued in the years to come.

The academic year 2019-20 has been a strange one indeed, with interruptions and difficulties brought about by the Corona Virus pandemic. It has brought in its wake difficult challenges, and forced on the whole world a ‘new normal’. There have been pandemics before, but nothing to match this one.

We have not allowed the challenges to beat us down but – inspired, as always, by the faith and resilience of our Founder-Chancellor, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said – we have risen to the challenge with faith, hope, and the help of modern technology. It would be both stupid and untruthful to deny that students and staff have suffered, but neither has thrown in the towel despite the tough fight. But, as they say: ‘We can but do our best’.

Since its inception, almost three decades ago, Hamdard University has enriched the workforce and society of Pakistan by producing over 30,000 highly-qualified graduates, from its 7 faculties. All connected with this institution can feel a glow of satisfaction – possibly even pride.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of Hakim Said’s martyrdom, but more importantly, the 100th of this birth. What a difference in so many lives one man’s life can make !

A Talk on “Antibiotic Stewardship : Whose Responsibility” held at HUH

Inauguration of Family Welfare Clinic

Nutrition Education Program for Healthcare Providers by Abbott Nutrition

The Department of ENT / Head & Neck Surgery established Bone Dissection Lab at Hamdard University Hospital. On the occasion of 1st Hamdard University Hands-on Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop, the lab was inaugurated by Honourable Chancellor, Mrs. Sadia Rashid.

In the private sector tertiary care teaching hospital, Hamdard University Hospital is the pioneer, which established the Temporal Bone Dissection Lab by its own efforts and resources. Four workshops have been conducted during the year 2019 and several participants from all over Pakistan have been given hands-on training.

Continuing medical education consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The content of CME is that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of healthcare to the public.

With regard to the CME approach, Hamdard University Hospital has continued to arrange lectures and workshops for clinical faculty, postgraduate trainees and house officers and final year MBBS students. In this connection, Dr. Sunil Dodani, Assistant Professor, Department of Infectious Diseases, SIUT was invited to deliver a talk on Antibiotic Stewardship: Whose responsibility on Saturday, April 6, 2019. It was a very informative session, which provided updated knowledge and experience of the speaker on subject topic.

The practice of controlling the number of children one has and the intervals between their births is particularly done by means of contraception or voluntary sterilization. It was the dire need and directive of regulatory authorities to establish a separate clinic that should be run by the Obstetricians / Gynaecologists. Hamdard University Hospital took an initiative to open Family Welfare Clinic in OPD on September 2, 2019, which is working efficiently and providing counselling to patients regarding birth control measures and full consultation services to patients.

Nutrition has always played a critical role in clinical management, and latest research has un-covered the impact of nutrition on the treatment as well as patient recovery from the disease. This has created the need for better understanding of nutritional assessment and nutritional intervention. In this context, Abbott Laboratories arranged Nutrition Education Program for Faculty members, PGs and HOs at

Hamdard University Hospital on September 13, 2019. 82 83

ALUMNI TESTIMONIALS

The establishment of Hamdard University was an excellent step taken by Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said in the early 90’s. It was his love towards education that has given people of Pakistan, specially Karachi, a new University in the private sector. His vision was to provide professional education to the talented youth.Hamdard University gave us a breather, as earlier, there used to be very limited opportunities for professional and business education in Pakistan. The facilities, infrastructure and the faculty employed are outstanding and they developed professionalism among the students. Being a proud alumnus of the first batch, I cannot thank Allah and Hakim Sahib for what I am today.

My 4 years in BE (IT) program at Hamdard University were among the best years of my life. I found the course curriculum to be very challenging but rewarding. A great faculty, excellent in their respective fields never turned us down at times of our need. They extended their helping hands for us beyond academics. We were more like a family. The University organized various pre-placement programs for each and every student to track the jobs during on and off campus placements.

Seventeen years later, I thank Hamdard University for preparing me with the ironclad determination that they knew would be needed for my successful and amazing journey in my very progressive career. I am really proud to call myself an alumnus of Hamdard University.

I am a graduate of Hamdard University from class of 2001. The entire journey nurtured me with competence, knowledge, insight and confidence with the best of faculty. As an undergraduate, my teachers incorporated ethics, practice of principles and training which enabled me to confidently broaden my learning horizon, and progress in the practical field. HU was the perfect balance of practice and academics thus it has produced some of the competent achievers in the medical field. I am glad to be associated with such an institution. I can assure HU will definitely equip the students with apt skills and knowledge which will contribute to success towards their chosen profession.
