When our story begins, we hear the mentality of the sorority Delta Nu: Now that a man chose you, your life begins today. The role of the woman is to marry well and, if you want to keep your man, try not to look your age. When our blonde protagonist, Elle Woods, is told that she no longer fits into her boyfriend’s life plan, her world is turned upside down. Determined

to prove she’s serious, but more to the point, to win back her man, Elle travels from UCLA to Harvard Law. With advice from some unexpected mentors and through hard work, Elle sees herself differently, and instead of reclaiming her man, she reclaims her pride. She realizes she is more than just a pretty blonde.

At the end of the show, the cast tells the audience directly to “go home and be legally blonde.” How do you do that? What does it mean to be “legally blonde”? Understand who you are and who you want to be; realize what’s preventing you from being who you want to be, and now, go do something about it. Take advantage of opportunities to grow, to hit refresh in order to be the fully-realized version of yourself. There’s another element to this: Elle received the proverbial kick in the pants from friends (visible and in-) who exercised tough love and woke her up to see her potential. How can we help another person be “legally blonde”? Replace judgment with understanding, recognize abilities, and see possibilities. In the show’s finale, several characters declare, “I’m standing here today because you helped me find my way.” What a blessing to give of ourselves so that we may lift up others!

Don’t worry: being true to yourself never goes out of style. So go out and there and be LEGALLY BLONDE!

Brandon J. Thomsen
