Recently we concluded our “8:46” sermon series that was based on the upheaval in our nation

sparked by the killing of George Floyd. You may recall that the officer’s knee was on Floyd’s

neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. Feeling frustrated and confused as to what I should

be doing as pastor during these times, wanting to be part of the solution and not part of the

problem, I was both comforted and encouraged by the Bishop’s admonition to “dare to believe

God might use us like leaven in the loaf.” And thus was born the “8:46” sermon series as a way to

invite God to speak to us, and lead us, through these difficult times.

You might recall that the 1 Kings and John passages from weeks one and two, respectively, of

this series, both had some striking similarities. Both took place during the Feast of Tabernacles

and both centered around conflict. The conflict in 1 Kings was around the impending split of

Israel into the northern and southern kingdoms and the conflict in John was between Jesus and

the Jewish leadership. Both conflicts, much like in our world today, stemmed from differing

ideological viewpoints.

I truly believe God has been using “8:46” to open our eyes so we can see the similarities between

our current issues and the ones of long ago. Moreover, I believe God is using these Scriptures to

remind us that the solution to these problems (and all problems, really) is deeply rooted in our

relationship with Jesus. In the “8:46” passage from Luke to conclude our series, we found two

very unlikely people seeking Jesus for help. The first was Jairus, a Jewish leader with a terminally

ill daughter. The second was an unnamed woman suffering with a hemorrhage for twelve years.

These two people were at opposite ends of the spectrum. Jairus, as a Jewish leader, would likely

have been against Jesus. And the unnamed woman would have been considered unclean by

Jairus and the Jewish tradition he upheld, prohibiting her from ever coming to the synagogue or

Temple for worship. Yet there they were, both coming to Jesus from very different paths in

search of healing. And Jesus, of course, does not disappoint! He told them both that it was their

belief, their faith in Him, that brought forth their healings.

Now here’s where I think things get really interesting, and quite frankly, pretty cool. The stories

of Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage are also found in Mark’s Gospel in 5:26. And

guess what? Eight minutes and forty six seconds is also 526 seconds, thus, Mark 5:26. Now, if we

go to Luke 5:26 it says, “Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe

and said, ‘We have seen remarkable things today.’” This is in response to the men lowering their

Page 4 Real Hope for Real Life Tacklebox

Pastor’s Page, Continued

paralyzed friend down through the ceiling on a mat so he could be in front of Jesus to be

healed, which he was.

Could it be that through 8:46 and 5:26 God is showing us the answer to our problems? Could it

be that God is reminding us that if we have enough faith to simply touch the hem of his

garment he’ll bring forth healing? If we have the audacity to think outside the box like the men

who cut the hole in the ceiling, that he’ll bring forth healing? If we’ll simply put our differences

aside and ask for help, like Jairus, that he’ll heal us?

Personally, I think that’s exactly what God is doing. I truly believe God wants to heal us. But we

have to do our part. We have to believe. We have to trust. We have to ask. If we’ll do those

simple things, in faith, I’m convinced we’ll see remarkable things and be filled with awe. Will

you join me in believing, trusting, and asking God to do what only God can do in these

troubling times? Will you dare to believe that in doing so, God just might use us like leaven in

the loaf?

Blessings,

Pastor Mick

you need help locating the yarn. Bring the items to the church office when finished,

and we will tag and bless them before giving them to those who need

encouragement. Thank you to all the ladies who are faithful to this ministry! If you

have any questions, call the church office at 419-586-6621.

Page 14 Real Hope for Real Life Tacklebox

**Due to the uncertainty of childcare regulations & available volunteers, we have decided not to

have in-person meetings for the rest of the year. In January, we will revisit that decision. Because

the majority of our childcare volunteers are in an at-risk age group, we do not foresee having

enough childcare volunteers for our meetings. This is something we struggle with regularly;

COVID will make it much worse. Social distancing & mask requirements in the church will also

make it difficult to meet in a comfortable way that will lift your spirits and refill your mamma

cup. But have no fear! We still plan to offer the following opportunities: women's ministry events

at the church, kid friendly outings, small group opportunities, a new mentor mom program, &

hopefully opportunities for an indoor playground this Winter. Check the Real Life Mom's

Facebook page for updates on the programs.

NEW Mentor Moms program! We are in search of mentors that have already raised their

children and made it through many of the challenges that mothers are facing. This is similar to

the Care Partners ministry at church. You will be matched with a young mom of similar

background to yours. For example if you raised four boys, we would match you with another boy

mom. If you've experienced infertility, then we would match you with a mother going through

similar trials. As a mentor mom, we would like you to make contacts twice a month with your

match, in whatever way you prefer (phone call, card, text, etc). If this is something you have an

interest in, or if you know a mom who would benefit from having a mentor, please email us

at [email protected] for more info.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are looking for a few ladies to join our steering team. Currently, we

have two co-chairs and three other leader positions. As ladies take time off for maternity leave

or have sick kids at home, we get stretched pretty thin. We would love to bring on a few extra

ladies. This plea goes out to veteran mothers as well. Your kids may be grown, but we could still

use your input, guidance, & talents on our steering team. If you want more information about

the volunteer position, email us at [email protected]

Good Works

There is a blood drive on Friday, September 4 from 12:00-6:00pm.

during our July drive, you ARE ELIGIBLE to donate at our September drive. Sign up quick! The
