Now the chapter on the sixteen varga
The system of vedic astrology uses sixteen vargas or charts to make predictions. Most people are only familiar with one of the vargas, which is the natal chart. The natal chart is the most common chart used in astrology. From the natal chart comes all the other fifteen vargas. Each varga lays out a specific aspect of the person read. When looking at a particular area of life for a person then a particular varga is used and that varga has presidence. Other vargas may be used in conjunction with that varga to round out the reading of the person in that particular matter in life. The reason the word varga is used to describe
the charts of vedic astrology is due to the fact that the vargas are simply dividing the space the planets transit through into particular divisions of space. All this will be described in much detail in this chapter.

Much of this ṣloka is self-explainatory, but there is a interesting clue in this ṣloka on how the principles of vedic astrology are taught. First the planets, second the signs, and then the vargas.

Of that planet which is the lord of that sign that is the Kṣetra [natal chart]. In an odd zodical sign are the Sun and Moon [in that order each holding 15 degrees each]. In an even zodical sign that is reversed.
The first sentence of this ṣloka starts to detail each of the vargas in how they are laid out and whom are the lords of the particular varga portions. The Kṣetra is the first varga. Kṣetra refers to a place of orgin for which the Kṣetra is the orgin of all the other vargas. The Kṣetra is described in full detail in the zodical sign chapter, which details which planet lords over a particular sign. The following planets rule over the following signs:
Sign PlanetAries MarsTaurus VenusGemini MercuryCancer MoonLeo SunVirgo MercuryLibra Venus
Scorpio MarsSagittarius JupiterCapricorn SaturnAquarius SaturnPisces Jupiter
There is deep significance to the lordship of each of these signs. Of all planets, Rahu and Ketu do not lord over a sign due to Rahu and Ketu not having manifest bodies. Rahu and Ketu are planets, but will lord over things via the lord of the sign they are in. Secondly, each planet except for the Sun and Moon will rule two signs. One sign being a positive sign and one being a negative sign, so planets the planets ruling two signs will have initiatory and receptive themes, circumstances, and environments. Sun is all initiatory and Moon is all receptive. Note the positive and negative of the signs oscillate around the whole zodiac. Much can be deduced from the above graph. At the time of a person’s birth, planets are in certain signs and longitudes. The chart on this page is an example of a Kṣetra chart (the Rasi chart is another name for the Kṣetra chart), which all the fifteen other vargas in this chapter will be based on:
© 2006 Michael Douglas Neely a.k.a. Prashanti Sarasvati
The second sentence of this ṣloka starts to describe the Horā varga. The Horā chart is made by dividing the zodical signs in the Kṣetra into two parts. The first part of an odd sign is ruled by the Sun and the latter part is ruled by the Moon. The opposite is true for even signs. You will note that both Sun and Moon have unbroken thirty degree portions, but the thirty degree portions overlap between two signs. From above we know that certain signs are initiative and reception aka have positive and negative qualities, respectively. This would correspond to a Sun and Moon Dynamic,
which is also analogous to the divine and nature aspect of the world or some people would say heaven and earth, respectively. Nonetheless, two brings on polarity. Within each positive and negative sign there is a subtly of positive and negative within each sign whether it be positive or negative. There is a give and take within each sign whether it be positive or negative. The Horā is further detailed in the next ṣloka.

The lords of the Moon’s Horā are known as the parents and of the Sun are the Divine. Half of a
zodical sign is a Horā. Those [of half a zodical sign] are twenty-four. Of those Horā beginning with Aries, etc. there ought to be two cycles.
The first sentence of this ṣloka details the lordship of the Moon’s and Sun’s Horā. The table below details how the lordship alternates:

The Sun’s Horā are ruled by the Divine and the Moon’s Horā are ruled by the Parents. Much can be pondered over the deep significance of the lordship of the Divine and Parents in the Horā. It seem logical given the connotations of the Horā to be detailed in the next chapter. The second sentence of the ṣloka indicates how the Horā is broken out as I have listed in the Horā table. Below is the Horā chart derived from the Kṣetra chart above.
In the Kṣetra the native’s Sun is in the last fifteen degrees of Aries, so the Sun would be placed in Aries in the Horā chart as the table above would indicate.

The Sun is in 28 degrees of Aries in the Kṣetra chart, so Sun is in Saggitarius as the table above would indicate. The lord of the Sun would be Nāradā given the Sun is in Aries in the Kṣetra chart. The Lords of the Dreṣkāṇa chart are Nāradā, Agasti, and Durvāsā, which are all famous sages. These following is some detail on the lords:
Brahma wanted Nāradā to take responsibility for procreation, but Nāradā refused. Brahma then cursed Nāradā to lose his knowledge and lead a life of sensuality and subjection to women and become
an eternal wanderer. One time Nāradā wanted to know the nature of the illusion of the universe, so Viṣṇu led him to a lake and when Nāradā looked into the lake he became a woman.
Agasti is associated with Viṣṇu in the triad of sages. He is the giver of advice, power of persuasion, messenger between men and gods, found of spreading discord, he is a strife lover, inventor of the lute, author of the code of law and music theory, and a wandering minstrel and mischief maker. Agasti also kills demons, gives divine weapons, and taught vedic rites. Agasti is the mover of mountains.
Durvāsā is associated with Śiva in this triad. Durvāsā is known for losing his temper.
The third house, which relates to the Dreṣkāṇa chart, deals with matters of self-will and the sages of the Dreṣkāṇa chart appear to be very willful.

Sun in the Kṣetra chart is in the first quarter of Taurus, thus Sun is in Taurus in the Turyāṁśa chart with its lord as Sanaka.
The four lords of the Turyāṁśa chart are all sages just like the Dreṣkāṇa chart. In particular, these sages are the Kumaras. The Kumaras are four eternal youths. Kumāra is the chief of them. They are considered the “mental sons of Brahma”. They are learned in the Vedas, celebate, and traveled together. They also teach son-giving austerities.
The four Kumaras represent the following four principles of knowledge: Sanaka is Saamkhya, or the analytical study of the elements; Sanandana is Yoga, or practicing mysticism for enlightenment; Sanatkumara is Tapas, or voluntary penance for the attainment of knowledge; and Sanatana is Vairagya, or renunciation of attachments for attaining liberation respectively. In the case of the seventh portion rulers, when in an odd zodical sign the count leads from one’s own lord, it is to be known that when in an even zodical sign [it leads off] from the seventh zodical sign lord, etc.

Thusly in the odd signs are Kṣāra, Kṣīra, Dadhi, Ājya, and equally Ikṣurasa, Madya, and Śuddhajala. In even signs Śuddhajala, etc.
The Bhu-mandala, or the planetary system of the Earth is divided into seven islands, which lie in concentric circles. The central island (of which our Earth is a part) is called Jambudvipa, the next one is Plaksha, then Shalmali, Kusha, Krauncha, Shaka and finally Pushkaradvipa forms the last and widest circle. In between every two islands there is an ocean, each of a different subtance. Jambudvipa is surrounded by Ksara-uda, or salt-water ocean, Plakshadvipa by Ikshu-rasa, or sugarcane juice, Shalmalidvipa is surrounded by Sura, or liquor, then the next is Ghrita (clarified butter), Kshira (milk), Dadhi-manda (emulsified yogurt) and Suddha-uda (sweet water). The names of these oceans are closely similar to the names of the seven Saptamshas. In the Bhagavata Purana more information is found on the rulers, inhabitants and landscape of these islands. This information pertaining to the Bhu-mandala comes from the 5th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam.
Kshara refers to the salt water ocean, and Jambudvipa, the middle island, which is surrounded by it. Jambudvipa is further divided into nine continents, where the different forms of the personality of Godhead are worshipped. In Bhadrasva-varsha Hayagriva [the incarnation with a horse-head] is worshipped. In Ilavarta-varsha Sankarsana [Lord of false ego] is worshipped. In Hari-varsha, Narasimhadeva [the lion head incarnation] is worshipped. In Ketumala-varsha Lord Hrisikesha is worshipped as Kamadeva. In Ramyaka-varsha, Matsya [the fish incarnation] is worshipped. In Hiranmaya-varsha, Kurma [the tortoise incarnation] is worshipped. In Uttarakuru-varsha, Varahadeva [ the Boar incarnation] is worshipped. In Kimpurusa-varsha, Lord Rama is worshipped and in Bharata-varsha, Nara-Narayana is worshipped. So these deities all relate to Kshara portions. The nine Deities worshipped here closely resemble the Deities of the Navagrahas listed by Parasara in BPHS, for the exception of Krishna, Buddha and Parasurama. In my opinion they are replaced here by Nara-Narayana, Hayagriva and Sankarsana respectively.
(The above information from “Deities in Vargas” by Gauranga Das.)

The lords of the Navāṁśa reflect types of living beings. In particular the temperment of each. The Divine is related to a conservative temperment, a human has a medium temperment, and a Demon has a liberal temperment.

Varuṇa, Māruta, Kubera, Iśāna, Padmaja, and Ananata in that order in odd [sign] or in even [sign] with the order inverted.
Indra is the king of the demigods, and he lords the eastern direction, from where material and spiritual development may come. Agni is the demigod of fire, and he rules the south-eastern direction. So homefire, digestion, cooking and all kinds of transformation depend on fire. Yama is the lord of the dead, and he lords the southern direction. He represents the mentality of wasting our human lifetime in temporary materialistic activities, and thereby not preparing ourselves for death and the next lifetime. All these sinful people are dragged to the court of Yamaraja after death, where He punishes them for their sinful activities. Raksahsa or Niruthi is the lord of the south-western direction, and all kinds of inauspicious activities come from him. Varuna is the lord of rains, and rules the western direction. All kinds of prosperity and happiness can come from there. Vayu is the lord of the winds, and he is residing in the North-western direction. He rules all the things connected with air, like communications, travels, movement etc. Kubera is the treasurer of the demigods, and he gives wealth. The northern direction is ruled by him. Ishan is the name of Lord Shiva, who is the lord of
the material energy (Shakti). Therefore by his help we can escape from the clutches of the material energy and get back to the spiritual world. He rules the north-eastern direction, which is favourable for spiritual development. In Sanskrit it is called Ishanya. Isha is also the name of the Supreme Lord Narayana, who is Parameshwara (the supreme controller), while Lord Shiva, his incarnation is called Maheshwara (the great controller). So Lord Shiva is also called Vaishnavanam yatha, or the greatest devotee of Lord Vishnu, as He is always meditating on His lotus feet (Om tad vishnu paramam padam sadaa pashyanti surayah, Rg Veda) Brahma is the creator of the universe, and the first created living entity as well. He resides on Brahmaloka, the highest planet in this universe. So He is in the upward direction, or Zenith (Midheaven), and he is the one who rules the 10th house of the horoscope as well. He gives the intelligence for creative work. And the last one is Anantadeva, the thousand-hooded serpent, who supports all te planetary systems on His heads. He lives in the bottom of the universe and is always engaged in singing the glories of the Supreme Lord. He is situated at the Nadir, or the downward direction. He is the basis and the foundation of everything, and he is the one who destroys the universe at the end of the period of its existence.
© 2006 Michael Douglas Neely a.k.a. Prashanti Sarasvati
However we should note that Brahma climbed down on the stem of the lotus after he was born, so he rules the downward direction of entanglement in the karmic reactions, while Ananta’s heads uphold the planets, so he indicates Moksha, or liberation, and the knowledge leading to it. Therefore he would control the upwards direction. It is noteworthy that the ten Dikpalas are not only the lords of the ten directions but also those of the Dasamsa (D-10 divisions), which rule the fruits of one’s actions. Their spouses are symbolic of the fruits of these actions. In addition, the weapons of the Dikpalas are the special skills and strengths that help to achieve the purpose. The Dikpalas instead symbolize the objectives and goals themselves. These objectives can be purely mundane when the directions are either of the eight in the horizontal plane signifying the mundane or material plane of consciousness. The objective can be one of knowledge when the direction is the vertical downward signifying ‘digging for knowledge’ and the Dikpala is the omniscient Brahma Whose knowledge is complete and perfect. The Vertical upward direction is ruled by Ananta (a form of Viñëu) signifying the objective of Moksha or final emancipation from the cycle of rebirth. The worship of the ten Dikpalas (or the specific Dikpala ruling the direction of the objective) makes the goal clear
and well defined. Worship of the weapon of the Dikpala gives us the ability and the strength of purpose to achieve the goal. Worship of the spouse of the Dikpala ensures that the fruits of the actions or the goal, when finally achieved are to our taste and liking. This obviates the possibility that we do not regret getting what we asked or worked towards.

In an even zodical sign it is known to be reversed. This is how you know the 60th portion lords. In an odd [sign] the 60th portion lords go direct and in an even sign they are reversed. [Last sentence seems to duplicate the information in the two former sentences].
