There is much that could be said

about Morris Clarke, but it can

all be summed up in two words

‘Showjumping Legend’.

Morris, from Mortlake in western

Victoria, was certainly a champion

showjumper in his day and is not

only still competing successfully

to this day, but has passed on his

skills and knowledge to his children

Tim and Kate who have both become

exceptional jumpers in their own right.

Morris was interested in horses

as a young boy and started riding

borrowed ponies around Mortlake

before acquiring his own horse as a

teenager and starting to make good

progress with his riding. As a young

man he was involved with horses

in many ways, working racehorses

for a neighbour, as well as playing

Polocrosse and being involved with

the Western District Pony Club.

Morris married Judy in his early 20’s

and as a team, they started producing

horses for Jumping and Eventing.

His jumping continued to develop,

which saw Morris compete at World

Cup level on several horses as well

as represent Australia in Japan, New

Zealand and in Australia as part of an

International Businessman’s Group

(IBG) competition. All this while

running a pie factory in Mortlake, which

employed approximately 200 people

with 50 delivery vans on the road.

Morris encouraged Tim and Kate in

the sport, often giving them the ride

on his top horses so they could have

success and travelling far and wide

to shows around the country to give

them both experience. Tim and Kate

both became successful World Cup

competitors with Tim named the

Equestrian Victoria Athlete of the

Year 2013-14.

As with many who have spent a life

in the saddle, Morris has had his

fair share of major injuries along

the way. A broken pelvis once had

him confined to a wheelchair for

2 months and he has had several

operations on injured shoulders. On

another occasion, a horse stood on

his leg causing a severe break, which

An old A grader Morris started riding in his teens.Playing Polocrosse.

required a chartered plane flight from

Tamworth to Melbourne for treatment.

And four years ago... Morris also won

possibly his biggest battle – with

Prostate Cancer.

Such is his passion for the sport, that

through all this Morris was determined

to keep riding and is more involved than

ever. Morris happily still competes up

to 1.20m and he loves to watch Judy

riding Dressage, where he has become

a wonderful test caller. At shows he

loves nothing more than assisting his

extended family, especially his two

grandchildren who are just starting to

ride their ponies.

David Sheppard – bringing his skills (and his new puppy!) to the state titles

There can be no doubt that one of

the essential elements of a good

show is the course design and the

Victorian State Titles are very

lucky to have one of the best in the

business David Sheppard looking

after things. David, a Level 3 FEI

Designer brings with him, not only

a great passion for the sport, but

a long history of experience and

involvement with jumping.

David started out his involvement

in jumping as a rider at pony club

level, but was soon drawn to course

designing mainly because he was

intrigued by it and hardly anyone no

one else was doing it!

After moving to the Yarra Valley in

the 1990’s, David joined Melbourne

Showjumping Club and learnt

much of his trade from Reg Cleland

and John Vallance. He assisted

Graeme Watts at Melbourne Royal

Show in 1999, as well as assisting

Werner Deeg at Sydney Royal Show

for three years. David gets great

satisfaction from course designing by

in his words “producing good sport

and seeing a nice horse well trained

and well ridden at the head of the

lineup”.

The list of significant events he

has designed courses for is almost

endless, including multiple Australian

Jumping Championships, Equitana,

Melbourne Royal, Melbourne Three

Day Event and over 25 World Cup

Qualifiers in the three eastern states.

Community spirit is huge in our

sport and this has never been

more evident than recently at the

Shepparton World Cup Show, when

a number of riders masterminded

a secret plan - now known as

‘Operation Blue Dog’. David and

his trusty best friend, Blue Heeler

‘Mindy’, were often seen at shows in

Victoria and NSW, but sadly, during

a severe storm in July 2020, Mindy

ran away and they are yet to be

re-united. David is so loved by all

in the Jumping community that a

number of riders recently banded

together and surprised David with

the gift of a puppy – there were not

many dry eyes that evening! David

and his new best friend ‘Billie’ were

a popular sight at the Werribee World

Cup held just a week later.

Thank you David for all that you do

to keep the sport of Jumping on track!

Omnipresent with his foals.

Chacfly’s very sporty, long-legged foals with fantastic canters dominate the auction places and are highly sought after by talent spotters around the globe. He himself is a model student. Chacfly PS has already been successful in international show jumping competitions up to 1* Grand Prix level in Lier/BEL and Kronenberg/NED. And with all his sovereign appearances on show jumping courses, one thing is clear: there is still scope for more.

Chacfly PS began his career as record winner of his stallion performance test with 9.49: In no less than six individual criteria (ability, manner and overall impression), he received the maximum score of 10 as well as 9.5 for rideability. He was then awarded the coveted Stakkato Prize for Hanoverians in Verden. In Vechta, he also received the Oldenburg Ib main premium for the outstanding quality of his first crop of foals. In 2016, Chacfly PS won the bronze medal at the Hanoverian Championships (4 y.o.) in Verden. He has won a number of competitions for young show jumpers, including twelve victories in the 2018 season, ridden by Patrick Stühlmeyer. He also won the qualifier for the German Championships in Klein Roscharden with a score of 8.8.

Cavalor Equicare Jumping Victoria State Titles hosts stars from around the country

Showjumping in Australia has

never been stronger and we are

now seeing Australian Jumping

talent shine all over the world.

This year’s Victorian Jumping Titles

sees a galaxy of stars descend on

Werribee Park National Equestrian

Centre (WPNEC) to compete in the

Senior Championship which are the

feature classes of the show.

Big names on the draws for this

year include local legend and 1996

Atlanta Olympian, Russell Johnstone

as well as 2012 London and 2016

Rio Olympian Patterson-Robinson

(JPR), who will be travelling down

from Sydney with Equador MVNZ,

who was just named the best

performed Section 2 horse at

Sydney Royal.

Speaking of Sydney Royal, Jamie

Winning-Kermond has made the

trek down from Sydney, bringing

Yandoo Oaks Constellation, who

after a fantastic week, was named

the Best Performed Jumping Horse

at Sydney Royal. As if that wasn’t

enough, the Best Performed Young

Horse from Sydney Royal, Nopal Van

Tallaert and Amber Fuller are here,

with Amber also bringing her 2018

Australian Senior Championship

horse CP Aretino.

James Arkins, fresh back from a

few months campaigning in the US,

has chosen to return to domestic

competition at the Victorian State

Titles where he will be competing

against a number of young guns

who are stepping up to Senior

Competition. These ‘youngsters’

include second, third and fourth

placegetters in the recent Australian

Young Rider Championships in

February, namely Conor Reed from

South Australia and Jess Rice-Ward

and Amelia Douglass, both from NSW.

Defending against these interstate

raiders are of course a number of

Victorian-based stars, including Paul

Brent, Ally and Andrew Lamb, Brook

Dobbin and Phillip Lever.

All in all, it promises to be a

thrilling competition.

Celebrating Thoroughbreds

The Off The Track program aims to facilitate the placement of retired

thoroughbred racehorses in second careers by promoting the network of
