A city taken to task over a notorious case
In 2018, a shocking discovery was made in the garden of a quaint house in Toronto, Canada. Hidden within plant pots were the body parts of seven men. An eighth man was found buried close by. The person responsible for these murders? Bruce McArthur, a gardener and shopping mall Santa Claus. He confessed to eight counts of murder in and around the Gay Village district of Toronto. His guilty plea, which saw him given eight concurrent life sentences, meant that he avoided a lengthy trial, leaving many questions unanswered. Now, Mobeen Azhar, a British, RTS Award-winning journalist, visits Toronto to investigate why McArthur’s killing spree went unchecked for seven years and to uncover the real story behind this notorious murder case. It’s a very personal quest for Azhar, and as he reveals new information about policing, the immigrant experience and how communities take care of each other, he discovers that this story is not only about a violent serial killer but also involves themes of race, culture, faith, and sexuality.* working title

Tomb raiders, trafficking and blood treasure
Loot is a fascinating investigation into how the trade in stolen antiquities and art has become a major source of income for criminal syndicates, gangs, and terrorists across the globe. For example, when ISIS controlled Syria and northern Iraq, it’s estimated that each year the Islamic terror organisation pocketed US $150-200 million from the illicit trade in stolen artefacts. However, as the coveted merchandise produced by this illicit activity adorns the walls of the fabulously wealthy and occupies podiums in the world’s greatest museums, nobody wants to talk about it.Precious ancient treasures torn out of the ground. Priceless art ripped from walls. It’s a modern tragedy, as the grandest of mankind’s achievements are reduced to little more than obscene commodities. Using a different case study, each episode of Loot looks at how and why everybody from Islamic State to the Chinese Triad have muscled in on the act, and why international law enforcement agencies are determined to shut it down, but often powerless to act.

The hidden network helping slaves find freedom
During the 1800s, roughly 100,000 enslaved people sought freedom on the Underground Railroad, a network of people and ‘safe houses’ that stretched from the American South to Canada and Mexico. This absorbing series uses archaeology and the latest technology, including cutting-edge drones and LiDAR, to both reveal the incredible hidden network of secret routes and places that helped people escape – and unlock some of their long-held and biggest mysteries. This fascinating series uncovers underground tunnels, remote caves, and artefacts from maroon communities on the run, as well as the likely whereabouts of abolitionist Harriet Tubman’s childhood home. We learn about secret caves in Grapevine, Texas, a lost ferry system that transported Black Americans to freedom in Mexico, and the forgotten city of Quindaro, Kansas, an abolitionist town that helped shield freedom seekers from bounty hunters and law enforcement. And we travel to a Washington DC cemetery where freedom seekers hid among the dead. We also learn about several unsung heroes of this Underground Railroad, as leading experts chronicle this critical chapter in American history.

How the railways kept World War 2 on track
This dynamic history series sheds new light on four famous campaigns of World War 2 – the Battle of England, Barbarossa, Operation Overlord and the Liberation of France, analysed through a unique prism - the train. Trains had become increasingly crucial to the war effort, moving from their traditional ‘iron horse’ role in transportation and logistics, evolving to becoming customised war machines, fast and strong, capable of protecting civilians, saving lost soldiers, and acting as weapons. Blending witness testimony and compelling international archive with new graphics, 3D imagery and detailed mapping, Trains at War examines the role trains and rail networks played by retracing complex historical situations and breaking down their importance to military strategy. We’ll review victories brought about by the train, but also the failures, where railway destruction or sabotage caused losses and collateral damage. It’s a fast-paced and exciting new take on this global conflict and puts trains firmly at the heart of war.

Triumphs and tragedies: the complete story of Britain’s longest-serving monarch
In a brand-new episode, which brings the story of Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign right up to date for this Platinum Jubilee year, we detail how recent royal scandals, public family breakups and the tragic loss of her husband, not to mention the impact of a global pandemic, have led to trying times for the most enduring monarch that Britain has ever seen. Throughout, she has remained steadfast, defending the monarchy in its darkest hours and rallying the nation when it needed her most. Over the course of her seven-decade rule, Elizabeth II has been served by over a dozen prime ministers, met the world’s greatest leaders, watched her offspring embroiled in a series of world-captivating scandals, and buried her mother, sister, iconic daughter-in-law and husband. She has seen her approval ratings plummet so low the monarchy itself was openly questioned, and later publicly rebounded to become the adoring “grandmother” of a grateful nation. Featuring interviews with prime ministers, royal household members and close friends, this series builds a uniquely personal and memorable picture of Queen Elizabeth II.

On the front line of crime in one of the UK’s most deprived regions
Custody Cops takes viewers to Grimsby, in the north of England, for an exclusive behind-the-bars look at one of Britain’s busiest - and newest - state-of-the-art custody suites. The region has the highest violent crime rate in the UK, so there’s never a dull moment as officers must deal with detainees pouring through the doors 24/7. The series focuses on the interpersonal relationships of a likeable cast of custody cops, who are like one big family, as well as the relationships between the officers and detainees. Many of these detainees are repeat offenders and are on friendly first-name terms with the officers. Due to the close-knit community in Grimsby, some of them even grew up or went to school together. Entertaining, edgy, and full of action, the series explores the logistical and personal challenges of running this modern and busy custody suite in one of the most deprived areas in Britain. Meanwhile, its mix of pathos and humour successfully celebrates a dedicated team of hardworking public servants on the front line of crime.

Risky but rewarding work for extreme lumberjacks
While northern Italy’s storm Vaia proved a catastrophe for many, for some, it provided a big new business opportunity: clearing the forest of millions of cubic metres of fallen trees and transforming them into hard cash. This fascinating obs-doc series follows the strenuous and dangerous work of those highly qualified lumberjacks capable of taking on such a risky job. In series four, we follow the fresh trials of the lumberjacks when a sudden abundance of wood causes prices to plummet and work becomes ever more dangerous after massive snowfalls. While in series five, the lumberjacks face a new enemy, one which may be even more fearsome than the storm: the spruce bark beetle. This microscopic insect can kill a centuries-old tree within just two weeks, and they spread like wildfire, causing the landscape to change daily. The only way to tackle their devastating impact is to intervene quickly and cut down trees. Now, more than ever, the teams must act quickly to avoid disaster and save their future. It’s a race against time that, once again, is not on their side. It involves sacrifice, teamwork, trust, and lots of risk.
Ingenious feats of heavy haulage

This ambitious series uses advanced CGI to reveal the engineering ingenuity of the crews undertaking these colossal feats. Rare archive footage reveals the secret history behind the featured locomotives and the dedicated people that build and restore them.No job is too big for the crews to handle - whether it’s a classic steam engine like the Sir Nigel Gresley heading to a new home at a heritage railway or the brand-new Class 800 Intercity passenger train, fresh off a ship from Japan. Each programme follows as the crews test their engineering ingenuity – devising innovative ways to haul locomotives onto massive multi-wheel trailers then overcome challenges such as narrow roads, treacherous weather, weak bridges, and heavy traffic to reach their final destinations.
