But fashion trends, or more appropriately, fads, are no-toriously fickle. The fash-ion industry is always on the hunt for what’s new, what’s hot. For every new, must-have handbag, there’s another that gets tossed aside, which was probably last year’s trend.

So what is a fashion trend?Fashion trend is some-thing that becomes popular among a large number of people and is followed with enthusiasm for some period, and fading out thereafter. Hence, fashion trend is the latest evolvement in the fashion industry.

How are the fashion trends evolving?Your closet can give the an-swer. Some of your vintage shirts now look just perfect with those old high waist jeans. No, you’re not growing old fashioned, it’s the cyclical effect of fashion.

Who decides what’s hot and what’s not? There is no existence of specific group/s that declare hot fashion trends. In fact, fashion designers and consumers who buy fashion merchandise make their judg-ment and opinions get spread on the basis of what is grabbed the most.

So how how long does a fashion trend last? Generally, most fashion trends last nearly one year, but some trends, usually the more ac-ceptable ones, last much longer. It is considered that normally fashion trends re-emerge near-ly every twenty years. Hence, the minis skirts of the 80s are trendy again.

The key to assuming how long a trend will last depends when you bought the collec-tion. If you bought it during knock-offs or discounts at retail stores, then the count for the trend should not last more than one or two seasons. The fashion industry normally dumps two seasons together, Spring and Summer, Fall and Winter, which provides you about six months to wear them before they look-outdated. In some cases, people

love particular trends so much they wouldn’t let it die.

DesignerspeakAs a fashion designer, Rajesh Dhakwa just wants the ‘good’ trends to continue.

“Fashion cycle is very natu-ral. Trends come and trends go, and they come again,” he says. But in the era of fashion evolu-tion, why are we repeating old fashion? Isn’t there just a modi-fication of what has already been created? Does this mean today’s designers lack creativity? “Ex-

actly!” says Dhakwa. Though it is apparent in the fashion cycle that a classic or vintage trend is going to repeat, it does raises questions about the designer’s creativity.”

But fashion designer Tia Tula has a different notion to offer. “I think fashion cycle is a natural phenomenon and it doesn’t have anything to do with the design-er’s lack of imagination. Fashion is tried and tested and what has been looking good in the past definitely repeats. In the 60s, tailor-made clothes were very big. They made women look el-egant and today, celebs like Vic-toria Beckham are bringing it back with a modern touch.”

Curios, I asked her if there were any past trends she would like to see again. “Maybe its not practical, but I love the Victo-rian Era and want it to be back,” she says with a laugh. “I’d love to see women in larger than life hats and nice fitting long gloves,” she declares.

Here are a few of the fashion trends that I wish would die this year:

1. UGGs :Or what I like to call the zombie of all footwear. Ap-parently this is one UGGly fash-ion statement that’s just never going die.

2. Fedora: That’s one hatbox that should never be opened.

3. Neon: Here’s something that works in small doses. I get it: Neon’s back, and its time to break up the all-black. But as with everything, moderation is the key.

4. Celeb Perfumes: Because I never wondered what it would be like to smell like Paris or J. Lo, and I am not willing to pay them to find out.

5. Juicy Sweatpants: No, I don’t want to read your ass. And I don’t like rear ends that talk.

But unfortunately, how hard I wish, they’re never going to die. They may fade out but I still wont be able to breathe in peace. Because they’ll be back. And all I can do is pray for me to be dead before they make a resurgence.

Skinny jeans, wedges, high waist skirts, waistbelts and over sized sunglasses. Each of these fashion trends is today seen on catwalks and sidewalks, through-out the world. Are we all having deja-vus or is it coincidence that if we flip through magazines or old photos from 3 decades or ago, we come across images of models posing in skinny jeans, or cheesing in waistbelts. In ac-tuality, almost all current trends we see premiering in fashion shows and season collections are not all 100% original and are inspired by clothing styles that were adopted by previous generations. Is this a negative thing? Maybe, but not complete-ly. It can be seen as more of an appreciation of fashion develop-ers before our time. The repeti-tive effects that occur in clothing trends allows for advancement in certain designs that could benefit from such adjustments. Maybe those platform heels are not what everyone is wearing nowa-days, but the wedge heels women wear today can be referred to as a spin off of those “once popular” shoes.

AMA (American Marketing Association) explains the fashion cycle:First, there’s the emerging trend, where the trend is highly sought after. You know this when you see that great hat/dress/shoe on the runway, Red Carpet or music video.

Next, comes what the AMA calls the emulation phase, where everyone wants a piece of the trend. You’ll see it in fashion magazines, newspapers, internet and TV during this phase.

Finally, the trend becomes saturated in the market, and designs sell at very low prices. With trendy items like a must-have designer handbag, the item becomes widely available as a knock-off.

Is Kathmandu in sync with the fashion cycle?“Certainly. We might not be along-side Paris or Milan but we are cer-tainly very much in sync in com-parison to neighbouring south-east Asian countries. Kathmandu is the fashion capital of south-east Asia. We are a very fashionable city,” Dhakwa remarks.

Tula also chimes in agreement. “I am amazed by how fashionable youngsters in Kathmandu are. They carry a sense of adventure in their clothing. The girls know what will look good on them without manag-ing to look trashy or cheap. They have wonderful hairdos and dress just right for their age,” she says. “And the boys are so metrosexual. I see they are highly influenced by Korean fashion. Every boy looks so pretty on the street!”

Trends in 2010Mixing and matching the trends of yesteryears with the current style of the decade is definitely in. People no longer wear one designer or one look from head-to-toe, but instead mix high and low; masculine and feminine; preppy and edgy -- and isn’t that a trend in itself?

Yes, fashion trends are refer-ential and recurring, but at the same time new ones pop up, al-lowing us to visually reflect the world around us.

But then again, are designers looking back to move forward?

is fashion important? “It’s as essential as the food we eat!” Rajesh Dhakwa re-marks. “You have to look at it

with an open mind to see its im-portance.” Sitting comfortably amongst rows of his vibrant, over-the-top creations and talk-ing animatedly with his big round eyes oozing conviction, one cannot but help subscribe to his view.

“Even in Nepal?” is what my dubious mind inquires, to which Dhakwa replies in the affirma-tive, stressing that in a fraction of the population (professionals, executives, even housewives) fashion consciousness is not just budding but in full bloom. As a

designer who has worked across the continent for more than a decade, Dhakwa has witnessed the demand for fashion in urban Nepal growing to such an ex-tent that he claims Nepal is, in his own words, “number one” in South East Asia today.

Nearly half a century ago the scenario was fundamentally dif-ferent: what constituted the Ne-pali fashion “industry” was only fabric imported from Lhasa, which Dhakwa’s ancestors en-gaged in, and from where Dhak-wa got his first glimpse into the world of clothes. This also probably spurred his interest. Perhaps young Dhakwa from thereon can best be described

as hune biruwa ko chillo paat, as he, despite being a boy (he re-calls, sans remorse, the mocking laughs of people upon hearing that he wanted to be a fashion designer), despite being in a place where there simply was no fashion industry as such, grew up to be a pioneer in the field.

One gets the sense that the driving force behind this de-signer is sheer love for fash-ion - an emotional attachment that overshadowed stereotypes, technical shortcomings, labor shortages, a meager market and lack of opportunities in Nepal. “I still don’t see even a satis-factory tailor here,” he quips. He certainly isn’t proud of the

scanty technical skills, nor of the profuse political disturbanc-es of our country. Regretfully, he mentions how up and coming young designers gain neither exposure nor fair opportuni-ties. Yet, Dhakwa also believes in patience, hard work and a sound educational background (he got his fashion diploma from Selegia Institute of Art and De-sign in Singapore) to succeed as a fashion designer in Nepal. A sprinkle of good luck always helps, but seizing opportunities at the right time goes a long way, he says. Prabal Gurung’s success is a case in point, which Dhakwa takes as an example for the whole Nepali fashion scene. “He took full advantage of op-portunities. It shows that there is nothing we, Nepalis, cannot do.” He further adds that Nepali designers have limited exposure

here, but once they manage to set foot abroad, the sheer mag-nitude of the market, and con-stant exposure coupled with intense competition guarantees ample opportunities for success.

Yet Rajesh Dhakwa never aspired to settle abroad as a designer. “Maybe I would have been lost in the crowd abroad,” he says. Dhakwa has perpetu-

rulingally flaunted Nepali fabrics and designs overseas. In Japan he designed a kimono in dhaka, a project he is obviously proud of, as seen by his energy as he says to me, “I finished it in two days!”

I then sway the rendezvous toward a bit of economics. The recent economic recession has hit the international fashion indus-try hard. Nepal (perhaps luckily but unsurprisingly) remained un-touched, to which Dhakwa points out how international fashion is clearly incomparable to what exists here. As much as fashion is making waves among a tiny fraction of the country’s popu-lation, it is still an insignificant industry in terms of turnover. According to Dhakwa, however, the potential is huge and yet to be acknowledged by our govern-ment.

As clients start coming in, I prepare to leave and Dhakwa points out how fashion journalism could tremendously help expand the industry: “Fashion journalism is practically non-existant in this country but I personally want to raise awareness about fashion in Nepal,” he says. It certainly is something the industry needs, es-pecially from veterans like him. !

After spending six-teen years of his life in Singapore, Sakil Kunwar returned to

Nepal with a Diploma in Hair Designing and Professional Makeup from VLCC Institute of Beauty, Health & Management, Delhi. Sakil initially started his work as a makeup artist for com-mercial shoots. He has however taken a step forward in realizing his goal by working with Miss Ne-pal 2009, Zenisha Moktan, by get-ting her ready for the Miss World pageant due this December.

At such a young age, you chose to be behind the scenes as a makeup artist. Why?I wouldn’t call my work to be be-hind the scenes. I like to believe I am the creative person, who ac-tually works to develop the end product, which is appreciated by everyone. I don’t really aspire for

a nine-to-five job, because I am not the kind of person who can abide by these norms. I believe that my caliber defies me from be-ing someone else’s creation and encourages me to create my own.

Although it is commonly known that make up artists have little scope in Nepal, why did you chose to pursue your career in the same?To be very honest, I didn’t re-ally know this, since I lived abroad for sixteen years and have had very little contact with Nepal. Most importantly, I don’t just want to be a make-up artist, I want to be a beauty pageant trainer. For me, beauty queens are not born, they need to be groomed into becoming one and I want to be that person. Also, my main motive behind coming to Nepal is to study. I am sure I will be leaving as soon as I am done with my studies. I am do-

How important is makeup to you?I realized that makeup was a very important aspect of making an ordinary person look extraor-dinary. Makeup can boost con-fidence and can make one stand out. Quality makeup is what sep-arates beauty queens from ordi-nary women. So, it is very impor-tant that women know or learn how to do their own makeup.

How did your parents and friends react when you decided on your choice of career?I was always a keen observer of beauty pageants. I don’t think it was ever a shock for my parents. I remember when I was small, I used to watch my mother and sisters getting ready, putting on makeup and fixing their hair. I would observe them as a beauti-cian and learn how to put make-up on someone else. Creativity is not inborn, you need to first be exposed to create, and that is how I learned from my fam-ily. As for my friends, they have always been very supportive.

What are your comments on the Miss Nepal pageant after your work with Zenisha Moktan?The main problem with our beauty pageant, Miss Nepal, is that it does not fulfill the re-quirements at the international level. The procedure to select Miss Nepal should at least in-

clude more than just a pretty face. It should take notice of a model’s heights for instance. “There is no point in sending a five feet four inch girl to an in-ternational arena that consists of women taller than 5’10!” ex-claims young Kunwar. Most im-portantly the one chosen to par-ticipate for Miss World should have an excellent trainer. !

What inspired you?Since my childhood, I was an avid fan of beauty pageants and was always mesmerized by the enchanting girls who not only looked pretty but also spoke well. Seeing this, I asked myself, “What made them like that?” And I realized that they are trained to have these qualities. They are trained to be jolly, to strike a pose, and to be noticed in a crowd. It then became clear to me that to train someone like that I had to have all these quali-ties in me. This continues to inspire me to become a beauty pageant trainer.

do your characters’ emotional and mental extremities depict the reality of your own life experiences?Yes to a certain extent i do depict characters that i see around myself. i also make it a point to work on them and fictionalize them as far as possible.

People perceive that your books gain publicity due to your royal connections. Your take on this.My being a part of the Royal family has nothing to do with my creativity. i don’t think people buy my books because of my background. My first book was a period book about my family, but it has a lot of Nepali history. people picked up my book to read and learn history. My second book was about tantra and spirituality but it also covers the historical and political scenario of the 1930s. My books sell because people want to read its content. Writing is my passion and comes from within me and is an integral part of me. i would rather be known as a creative and acclaimed writer than be known as some distant relative of some family. having written three novels, my writing has become my identity and i am proud of it.

do you see yourself as rebellious as your character, sanjeevani?Yes i am as rebellious. sanjeevani’s wild and free spirit, her desire to make her own decisions and her attempts at being benevolent and independent are some of the characteristics i relate to. i feel a great many changes have come in Nepal politically as well as socially but the position of woman is still cliched. A man can walk into a bar after a day of hard work, take a few drinks and then head home but a woman seen doing the same is frowned upon and called names. That is how hypocritical our society is. i want to change this trend of thinking not only through my writing but by actually practicing it myself. And yes, sanjeevani has done many things in my novel which i would have wanted to but could not.

The sound and shape of “oM” is also known as “omkar”. in this series of paintings, shrestha expresses the omkar in various forms, colours and arrangements which he call omkarnations - the incarnations of omkar. The expression of omkar in rich colours along with geometrical shapes creates strong graphical works which bring together aesthetics and the eternity. gaurav has been doing collage painting since the last 10 years and this is his 8th solo painting exhibition. he has also been a part of many group exhibitions and art workshops, mainly with his ‘‘infinity group’. As a precursor to the international tattoo convention event, a national tattoo convention is being held in kathmandu, with tattoo artists from all over the country participating. The national convention will include more than thirty tattoo artists and studios from all over Nepal. This is the first event of its kind in Nepal.

The tattoo convention is open for any tattoo artist who registers by paying the convention fee. stalls will be provided for all participants. All participants have to abide to strict criteria for hygiene and safety. The event will also be open for the public throughout the day, subject to a minimal door charge. There will be stalls for food and drink and in the evening, local bands will be featured.

The purpose of this event is threefold; to create the groundwork for the preparation of the first international convention to be held in Nepal during Nepal Tourism Year 2011, create a space for local artists to meet and interact, and finally to spread awareness among local artists about international safety and hygiene standards.

do you think you can live up to your father’s legacy?Times are changing and we have to adjust our paths as well. My father is my idol but for me i have to carve out my own path in my artistic career. The future is far ahead and i am concentrating on the present. The target of my artistic career is far more beyond my father’s journey.

Promoting indigenous issues through a three-day film festival is a lost cause. do you agree?Walking down the street and shouting for rights isn’t the only way to bring revolution. Festivals like this present the voices of marginalized communities increasing awareness, and also sensitizing, advocating and lobbying for the rights of the indigenous people. organizing this festival has led the government to recognize indigenous languages as mother tongues and incorporate them into the constitution. besides, the festival is the perfect platform to discuss various issues related to indigenous communities which needs politically attention. The issues reflected in the films are indicative of changes in the ways of struggle for recognition. lost cause? i would firmly disagree.

What have been your concrete achievements through this festival?Films are a strong and effective medium of communication that is understood by everyone. As i said, the festival has created political, social and cultural awareness. The theme for this year was ‘transfer of knowledge’ and the films screened reflected how indigenous skills can be adapted for modern use and the significance of passing down the cultural knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation. The government has established a common forum for indigenous groups and the film board has been working to upgrade the archiving, promotion and documentation of indigenous films and issues related to it. Also, the increment in audiences every year is an indication of the increased levels of awareness amongst people and reflect the concrete achievements we have made.

at an individual level what are you doing for indigenous people?(sighs and smiles) This is what i am doing and everyone of us is. personally, i have been associated with the film industry which i have been using as a medium to try and create indigenous cultural identity at the national and international level. i am committed towards development and enhancement of indigenous issues through films, making sure that the voices aren’t overshadowed.

paleti with the MahakaviThe sixth edition of this year’s paleti was held at the nepa~laya’s ‘r’ sala on 25 June. This time the paleti took a poetic turn as it featured poems of the Mahakavi, laxmi prasad devkota. As recognition of the great contributions made by the Mahakavi, kamal Mani dixit along with other students of the great poet shared their anecdotes. The musical tribute to the poet consisted of songs like phool phool phool re madhur jaraka from sulochana Mahakavya, Malai launa man lagyo, Maile bhane, Kalilo ramro, Jham jham pareli, Himal chuli and Ishwor taile rachera pheri. They were sung by paleti singers suraj, Meena and Angela along with songs composed by around 10 other musicians. lyricist Ratna shumsher Rana, student of the Mahakavi, and dr. padma devkota, son of laxmi prasad devkota also participated in the event.

The Art of sign languageAawaran and Anawaran produced by Jyotipunja sign Theatre proved that theatre can be enjoyed by the hearing impaired as well. staged at Rastriya Naach ghar, Jamal, this unique play was a blend of sign verbal and sign languages. Aawaran and Anawaran is based on the fantasy that narrates a conflict between humans and monkeys due to advancements of science. The performances by binod shrestha (doctor) and kishor Anurag (Monkey) were laudable with fantastic usage of both verbal and sign languages. held on the 23rd and 24th of June, this play was staged to mark the celebration of sign Theatre Year 2067.

To tell the tale behind Hamra Hajurama, a book that features grandmothers from all over the country, Quixote’s Cove organized a program, “Tavern Tales” at the Nepal-bharat library on 24 June. Nayantara gurung kakshapati , co-founder of photo Circle, who has also contributed to the book as a photographer, addressed the audience talking about the book and the team of writers and photographers who helped put the book together. The event was sadly, attended by only a few of the writers and photographers involved with Hamro Hajurama. satish sharma, an independent photographer and the editor of the book Hamro Hajurama, shared his thoughts on photography—its superiority to text, because of the fact that it appeals to people from all strata of society, both literate and illiterate. he talked about the existence of pictography which dates back to the pre-historic ages and the choice of photography made by photographers today. A short slideshow of photographs from the books were shown. satish sharma also answered queries from the audience. An informal interaction between the audience and the people involved with the project rounded off the program.

An everlasting Friendship...on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Nepal, the Australian embassy announced the launch of the book ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Australian Mountaineering Feats and Friendships in Nepal’ on 25 June. “This book is going to contribute a lot, especially to the Nepal-Australia relations,” said Mr. subash Nirola, Acting Ceo of Nepal Tourism board.

The author, Miriam Fisher has covered the heart-felt stories of nine Australians whose achievements on the mountains, according to the author, ‘are matched by their achievements as friends of Nepal - both on an individual level and through their philanthropic works.’ The book shows that most of the men including brigitte Muir and peter hillary have not only enjoyed the warmth and help of Nepali sherpas but have given back generously either in an independent capacity or with the help of the Australian himalayan Foundation (AhF). songs of smala27 June was the last day of the international Music Week organized by Alliance Francaise. The free concert on 27th showcased the French jazz band Sam Smala. Audiences travelled from Havana to Paris, from New York to Istanbul with the universal music of Sam Smala.

To start the great musical evening, Graffi ti, winner of the music contest held by Alliance Francaise, played some of their superb original scores which got the audience into a groovy mood. However the wait was for Sam Smala who started the evening with ‘Puzzle’ which was followed by song of peace, ‘Simplicity’. They played songs in French, Turkish, Russian, English, etc. which gave a whole new dimension to the concert. “It’s very interesting and we are really excited that we are playing here in Nepal for the fi rst time,” says Samuel Strouk, guitarist of the band. “It feels good to share our music with the music-loving Nepali crowd,” he added. Road show endsThe pepsi Football Mania Road show ended with a 4-day show in kathmandu (June 26 – 29). The road show has travelled to a total of 11 cities and towns, performing in key areas of each city. in kathmandu Valley, the road show began in baneshwor and ended in Jawalakhel covering 8 locations in total including bhaktapur, bhrikuti Mandap, Chabahil, Jorpati, swayambhu and balaju.

The road show team received an enthusiastic response in every location they toured with people lining up for the games and performances. keeping in line with the pepsi theme of energetic football fun, the road show was a mixture of interactive football related games and fun performances by Nepali rap sensation Nirnaya Nsk.

The road show as a whole has been very successful and well-received.

iFA (Indigenous Film Archive) organized the 4th Internation-al Indigenous Film Festival 2010 successfully by screening 14 Nepali and 19 international films at City Hall and Nepal Tour-ism Board from June 25 to 27. The festival was inaugurated by

prominent artist, Kiran Manandhar who created an artwork to mark the occasion. The films screened emphasized on traditional indig-enous ways of life that lead to awakening of cultural identities in an increasingly materialistic world. Hence, this year’s festival focused on the theme, ‘transfer of knowledge’ – a way of passing down in-digenous skills and wisdoms to the younger generation .

The other highlights of the three-day film festival were the indigenous handicraft exhibition, cultural floats, and interaction programs on indigenous issues. According to Dipen Lama, Event Manager, “the experience has been amazing because indigenous communities in Nepal were able to watch films from other commu-nities and interact with the film makers and with each other which created appreciation and understanding of challenges faced by the indigenous people.”

Planning: The photographers, the stylists, the hair

and make up artists and the models get together and dis-

cuss the photo shoot. The photographer briefs the rest of

the team on the theme of the shoot and then specifies on

what he wants from each of the members of his team.

Hair and make uP: The make up artist first does

the make up on the models, starting from their face and

then moving on to the rest of the body. After the make

up is completed, the hair stylist styles the model’s hair.

set PreParation: The photographer, his assistant and

the lights person prepare the set for the photo shoot. They

arrange the props, and then position the models. After that, the

lights are placed in appropriate places.

moCk PHoto sHoot: The photographer tries a few

shots with the models. it is standard practice for models

to switch roles and try different poses. The photographer

takes shots from different positions to find the right frame.

make uP retouCH: After the completion

of the mock photo shoot, the make up artist

retouches on the make up. The hair stylist also

adds a final touch to the hair. Then, when the

models are ready, the final photo shoot begins.

There is so much more to fashion than just glamorous models in beautiful clothes. be it Cecil beaton choosing Jackson pollock paintings as backdrop for his American Vogue fashion shoot in 1951, or the 2008 public underwater fashion shoot for Cosmopolitan in sydney, every shoot has immense thought and effort put into it to make it captivating.

so how do you put a fashion shoot together? Firstly, there is always a team of the fol-lowing: Fashion stylist, hair stylist, Make-up Artist, Model, lights person, photographer and his Assistant. The photographer briefs the stylist before the shoot about the requirements. This briefing is a think tank session that is intended to garner a “Theme” or “story” that will be the thread running through the whole shoot. it is like writing a storyboard. The stylist chooses the clothing, shoes and accessories as per the needs of the photo shoot.

All “good” fashion stories start with a theme that helps determine the flow of the photo shoot. All members of the photo shoot team have to strictly work in accordance to the theme, and not their personal preferences.

Two weeks back with the first sip of my coffee, I took up my favorite weekly the Fr!day and turned to page 15 to read the Undercover Gourmet sec-tion on The Factory. Not that I was doing this for the first time. I have been a sincere follower of this particular segment being a restaurateur and a foodie myself. And it has provided me great in-sights, and again congratulation to ECS Media on this regard.

As I read it, it came to me as a surprise that we were much criticized in every way possible by the writer on his personal ex-perience at The Factory on the opening night of the World Cup. And criticism we welcome, as it is a foundation for a better to-morrow in the hospitality trade.

I, as M.D of the restaurant, would like to take all responsibil-ity of the charges pressed against us, and would like to clarify a few things from our end.

Any venue, be it a res-taurant, café, bar, or a multi star hotel,

would be busy with final min-utes touch ups on the eve of a major event. This is inevitable under any standards or mea-sures you take. For us, it was a one-of-a-kind first time event, to screen the World Cup match-es using multi HD projectors and with so much more on the plate. And I would here like to give credit to Nishant Shrestha, our Consultant and Event Co-

ordinator for organizing a mar-velous event. And the news is in town. We don’t need to talk much about it.

act to that kind of a situation. Our service staffs tried their best to accommodate as many people possible at one time, as we didn’t want anyone to have to leave and definitely did not want anyone to have a bad start to their World Cup festivities. And for the kitchen to pro-vide food to 150 people at the same time again is a challenge on its own, for which my staff deserves praise. I have person-ally applauded them again and again.

About the freshness of the food and hygiene, let me say this. We try our best to maintain in-ternational HACCP standards. I personally am not a seafood expert, but I know for sure that for preservation purposes sea-food is kept frozen until a few hours before preparation starts in the kitchen.

Most of the ‘truth or myth’ is practically myth. We have a special world cup menu fea-turing Spanish Tapas, and a regular menu on the side. Some items on both the menus at times might not be available de-pending on the availability of the ingredients. The cocktails dedicated to the playing nations are well thought and researched for, and it significantly reflects their origins. Offers are valid during non match hours, and to kill the confusion we request customers to pay for their offer order as soon as they receive their orders.

Red statement lips are already a fad in k-Town, but tender pink works equally well with fair complexions. For wheatish skins, matte nudes and berry-stained lips look über sexy. !

name suggests lasts for almost a week. Nobody’s really sure when fashion weeks began but US re-tailers staged what could be called sort of fashion shows as early as 1903. Since the practice of hav-ing models walk in front of one’s clients in the lobby or restaurant during lunch and teatime was a French influence, fashion parades (as those were called then) are believed to have been in vogue in Parisian couture salons well be-fore the 20th century.

The Autumn/Winter (or Fall) Collection is showcased during the months of January through April and the Summer/Spring Collection, September through November. Fashion weeks are held several months in advance to the season to give the press and buyers a chance to preview the designs and also to give re-tailers enough time to arrange for purchase of such designs for the upcoming season. There will be certain alterations to most of the dresses on the runway when they are mass manufactured; this may not apply for the Couture Weeks. New York has four major fashion weeks every year. Un-fortunately (for us), most of the high-profile fashion weeks now are by-invitation-only events.

And when these clothes hit the

stores, they come in standard sizes from S to XXXL and you pick the one that fits you the closest – that’s ready-to-wear (RTW), also known as off-the-rack or more flamboy-antly prêt-à-porter. There almost always is a RTW for everyone.

However, for those with thick-er purses, there’s Haute Couture meaning high dressmaking. In France, Haute Couture is a legal term and defined by the Minis-try of Industry. This has been the tradition since 1945 and only a few fashion houses make it into the list drawn up every year. This is because Couture demands high-quality, expen-sive fabric and detailed atten-tion to sewing most of which is hand-finished and certainly time consuming, while most fashion

Unlike Haute Couture, there is no legal protection for Bespoke which has caused it to be associated with any tailor shop that offers custom fitting. While made-to-measure is

super-deluxe treatment, Bespoke is presidential – it’s more of a lav-ish affair demanding hand-stitched seams and a plethora of sartorial options and services.

To sum up, fashion is cut, fold and stitch without a given order. And you’re living with it everytime everyday – you think you have a style, that’s eternal fashion; you think you’re trendy, that’s seasonal fashion; you think you’re nei-ther, you know more than ei-ther of them do! To cut the long story short, nobody is exempt from what is the one of the most influential tools in socio-economic dynamics and politico-cultural phenomenon. And clothes form an integral part of fashion. !

High heels

i can’t afford them. i can’t walk in them. i couldn’t even wear them on a date to impress a man because, trust me, men hate women who: (a) tower over them, and (b) are unable to walk any distance at all without clinging on to them.

but still i bought these 6 inch high platforms with chunky heels. Why? The answer is simple: i have been brainwashed by the fashion industry into believing that these outrageously expensive and perilously high shoes will make me happier.

but they haven’t and they won’t. Very high shoes make you feel tired, depressed, desperately sore and powerless. Maybe in the Fifties, when sex and babies went together, women went to parties to catch a hus-band, put on the highest heels the shoemaker could manage, dabbed scent behind their ears, cinched in their waists, told their boyfriends they were virgins and that was the way they meant to stay, then waited for them to capitulate and propose. They did. Maybe in those days heels did signify confidence and power. but not anymore!

You feel weak in these shoes. What if a man were to run up behind you on a dark street? What if a pavement were to involve cobbles?

Clumpy shoes, not bags, are the ultimate status symbol — go to any party or trendy bar and all the girls’ eyes are focused firmly on your feet. These outrageous shoes are there for one purpose only: to sepa-rate you from your hard-earned money.

The big lie, of course, is that the more expensive brands are so well made and balanced that they are comfy, and therefore worth the extra money. in the interest of research, i have tried them all — from Manolo blahnik to Jimmy Choo to Christian louboutin — and they all make me want to leave a party early so i can go home to immerse my swollen feet in a bowl of ice-cold water.

These shoes have spread to every precinct in the land, prompting condem-nation of young women who all seem hopelessly drunk. (They’re not drunk, you fool, they just can’t take one more step in these blasted shoes!!)

These bondage shoes are the modern equivalent of the hobble skirt: they make us move in tiny movements, they disempower us and crip-ple us. i have lost count of the number of women i have met recently who have developed back problems, or have strained their ankles.

like cigarettes and alcohol, i say these fashion items should come with a health warning !

What stopped you from opening a restaurant promoting traditional nepali food? We felt there already are various Nepali restaurants serving authentic Nepali food. The fast food offered at belly busters is what we call in Nepali, “chhito mitho”. plus, even though we are now focusing on international cuisine, in the near future we have plans to offer ethnic Nepali food in our next project.
