G iving back to the game of golf has thefuture of the game on solid ground andthese are the foundations that Roscoe
golfer Chuck Husson IV supports as he not onlyperforms as a championship golfer, but also inthe long hours of work that it takes to managetwo large Sullivan County summer golf leagues.
Forty-two year-old Charles (Chuck) LouisHusson IV is a lifetime resident of the Town ofRockland (Roscoe) and is a 1998 graduate fromRoscoe Central School.
Following his high school graduation Chuck
served four years 1998-2002 in the United StatesAir Force and from 2002-2003 was a substituteand teacher’s assistant at Roscoe Central School.
In March of 2003 he took the New York StateCorrections Officer’s assignment at WoodbourneCorrectional, a position he has held for a littleover 18 years.
His hobbies include anything sports relatedwith golf being his No. 1 choice.
At Roscoe Central, basketball and golf were hismain sporting activities, and he was part of mul-tiple division and league titles in both.

Golf gets strong support fromChuck Husson IV
STORY AND PHOTOS BY ED TOWNSEND
At the early age of eight in the late 1980’s hisfather, Chuck Husson III, now a retired NYSCorrection Officer from WoodbourneCorrectional started to get Husson IV interestedin the game of golf.
That interest in the game was helped by the factthat both his mother, Anna May, and father,Chuck III, were both very active in the game andhis father served many years as treasurer on theTwin Village Golf Club board of directors and fora number of years was President of the MondayNight Men’s at the Twin Villlage Golf Course.
Chuck has been an active golfer for some 32-plus years and now competes in two leagues, theTwin Village Monday Night Men’s League, andthe Community Travel League which plays at theTarry Brae Golf Course, the Lochmor Golf Course, the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club and the VillaRoma Golf Course.
Husson’s golf partners in the two leagues he is
active in include his father Chuck Husson III inthe Roscoe Twin Village Monday Men’s leagueand in the Community Travel league his partneris his close friend and excellent golfer BryanThomas.
Not many golfers have the opportunity toteam-up with their father as partners in the two-man team format and Chuck IV noted, “once Istarted playing in the Monday Night league sub-bing as a 14-15 year old, it was a personal goal ofmine to eventually partner up with my father.”
“Because of the long waiting list to get into thisleague and the fact that even at that age I wasplanning on going into the Air Force, subbing wasmy only option then. After getting out of the AirForce in 2002, I was lucky enough to get my footin the door into the Monday Night league as afull-time player partnering up with Charlie

Coyle,” Chuck added. The journey for the two Hussons to unite as golf
league partners continued with Chuck IV statingthat “my brother (Tom Ackerly) (different fathers)had since partnered up with my father while Iwas in the Air Force and unfortunately, Charliepassed away a year or two later which led mesearching for a new partner. I believe my dad andbrother had won the Monday Night leaguechampionship a few times, and I did not evenwant to ask to switch partners with my brotherduring their hot streak.”
After golfing with a few different fill-inpartners Chuck IV asked his brother if hewould be willing to find a new partner him-self and this would allow him to play withhis father. His brother agreed and the twoHussons, the III and the IV have been part-ners ever since.
Asked what it’s like playing in a leaguewith your father, Chuck IV said, “Being ableto do something that you love with some-one you love is amazing, and win or lose Ihave a great time golfing and spending timewith my father.”
When asked what his dad has taught him aboutthe game of golf, Chuck IV noted, “The mainthing that has helped me the most is patienceand the ability to reset after a bad shot.”
Chuck IV’s mother (Anna May Husson) is alsoan accomplished and active golfer and Chuck IIIstarted teaching both of them around the sametime and Chuck IV stated, “We both caught onquick.
“I am pretty sure that I get a large portion of mycompetitive nature from my mother and whatwould look like a nice relaxing round of golf
between father, motherand son from watchingafar, was usually an intensecut-throat match betweenthe three of us…there wereno gimme’s or mulligansallowed,” Chuck added.
Chuck IV pointed outvery strongly, “If I played ina mixed league I wouldchoose my mother as apartner as she has becomean amazing golfer and we

play good golf together.”“It does not happen as much as it use to when I
was younger, but anytime golfing with my par-ents is time and memories I will always remem-ber, Chuck IV pointed out.
Managing two golf leagues is not an easy taskand one has to have a great love for the game. “It’svery tough and time consuming,” said Chuck,“scheduling and trying to please everyone in theleague is the hardest part.”
At Twin Village, Chuck has put in 25 years as asub and full-time member and took over manag-ing the league from his father about three yearsago. He and his father have won the leaguechampionship five years since being partners.
Bryan Thomas and Chuck have played in theTravel League for seven years and won it three ofthose seven years. This is the fourth year Chuck isrunning this league.
The challenges in competing in the TravelLeague, according to Chuck is the randomness ofplaying a different nine-hole course each week. Most leagues play the same course each weekand that Husson maintains, “Makes it easier tolearn the ins and outs of it quicker and that is the
major challenge with Travel league which I likemost about.”
In the Travel League Husson is a four handicapand in the Monday Twin Village league he plays toa two handicap.
Husson tries to play in as many BenefitScrambles around the area as family and workallows. He plays in these tournaments with prettymuch the same team each match. Members ofthe team include nephew Collin Tallman andfriends Tom Roseo and Johnny Meyer. He wonsome and lost some and for the past three yearshaving competed in the Sullivan CountyDemocrat tournament with nephew CollinTallman. It was a bit of a learning experience thefirst year but Collin and Husson have won thesecond flight each of the last two years.
“When I play with Collin I have to rememberthat I am not in my 20’s anymore, and I have nochance of keeping up with his distance,” Hussonnoted.
When asked who has helped him the most withhis golf game, Husson said, “There is not one per-son or thing…where my game is now is because

of many different things and people, like theCatskill Junior Tour when I was younger, being onthe Roscoe High School golf team, learning frommy coach and uncle Jim Bowers, pointers fromthe late great ‘Coach’ Fred Ahart down at the ath-letic field, playing in the Monday Night Men’sleague as a teenager and getting that experienceof playing with adults in a competitive setting.
“Also playing with my Travel League partnerBryan Thomas who is super knowledgeableabout the game and most importantly my par-ents for always making the game of golf easilyaccessible to me,” he added.
When asked what he considers the strength ofhis game Husson said, “I am a scrambler on thegolf course, getting creative and being able to seeand hit shots that others would not attempt oreven see is the strength to my game.”
There is also a personal life that everyone triesto enjoy.
Chuck noted, “My personal life is in anextremely happy place and mainly because of myamazing and beautiful girlfriend Terri Ward.”
“She is supportive in everything that I

do....especially golf. Last year at the golf rangewas Terri’s first experience attempting golf and itdid not go well. Her softball swing (she is a mem-ber of the championship softball team Charlie’sAngels) was taking over and she could not get thegolf swing together, but knowing how competi-tive she is, Terri has no plans on letting golf win.”
Terri is employed as the Business DevelopmentDirector at the Resnick Group, is a formerSullivan County Legislator and the former CEO ofthe Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce.
Golf plays an important part in Chuck’s 11-year-old son’s (Liam) life, and they are excited toget out and play golf this season as last year Liamonly played a few times with Covid going on.
“Liam got a new set of Junior King Cobra’s lastyear and he has grown into them this past year, and I’m excited to get him out there on the golfcourse,” Chuck said.
It takes a well-organized and talented individ-ual to achieve what Chuck Husson IV has donefor his personal game of golf and for the overallsport of golf.

Whether you’re a beginner or an avid biker, make the trip to Catskill CycleWorks and theywill help you find what you’re looking for.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM
In the past year, pandemic restrictions have caused more people to getback in touch with the outdoors. One of the ways people have done sois on their bikes. An article on CNBC.com titled, “Covid has spurred a
bike boom, but most U.S. cities aren’t ready for it,” noted that bike salesreached $1 Billion in April 2020 alone, which was a 75 percent increasefrom the prior year.
Discussions with local shop owners last spring and summer was on parwith the national data, as bike inventories were suddenly wiped out.
That’s not surprising locally because the Catskills offers several greatplaces to go for a bike ride, whether it’s hitting the road or one of themany scenic trails.
No matter what you choose, it’s always important to be prepared.Luckily for you, there’s a new bike shop called Catskill CycleWorks onMain Street in Jeffersonville where you can purchase new bicycles, acces-sories and apparel, as well as have your bike serviced and repaired.
Owners Jon Thorndike and Kelly Lawler opened Catskill CycleWorks inDecember. Jon is originally from Connecticut and Kelly is from Georgia.Their paths collided when they were both living in New York City. In fact,

they were neighbors. The couple started comingup to the area in the early 2010s before makingthe decision to settle in Lake Huntington year-round.
Cycling also happened to be a commonality intheir lives.
Jon has years of riding experience and his lovefor it is apparent.
“I like to be outside and the idea of workingtowards another fitness goal, [such as] climbinga hill or going faster than you have before,” said
Jon. “I also enjoy the ongoing, infinite challengeof always trying to get better.”
Kelly, who works in the advertising technologyfield, also rides casually and her brother hap-pens to be a retired pro cyclist.
For the past decade, Jon had been restoring oldmotorcycles, which became a catalyst for start-ing the shop.
“That got me into doing my own bicycle workand it sort of snowballed from there,” heexplained.
Months of research followed, which included

That has only added to his knowledge, and nomatter how many times you’ve stepped onto abike, they can provide you with what you need.
“We want to accommodate as many different
experience levels as we can,” explained Kelly.Several people have brought in bikes they
haven’t touched in years and Catskill CycleWorkshas helped get them back on the road.
While nobody knows for sure when the pan-demic will be over, there is one thing that’s clear:

In 1775, leading American figure BenjaminFranklin argued that the timber rat-tlesnake was the ideal image for thecolonies. In a newspaper article, Franklin
told readers that the rattlesnake’s eyes, forexample, excelled in brightness well beyondthose of other animals.
“She has no eyelids,” he said. “She maytherefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when onceengaged, ever surrenders. She is therefore anemblem of magnanimity and true courage...she never wounds till she has generously givennotice, even to her enemy, and cautioned himagainst the danger of treading on her.”
Franklin succeeded in lifting the rat-tlesnake’s esteem to the point that the reptileroutinely graced colonial flags during theRevolutionary War.
Indeed, our local big snake, the three-to-five-foot long timber rattlesnake, should com-mand both respect from a safe distance andgratitude for keeping the rodent population(think Lyme Disease) at bay.
“Snakes get a bad rap because of our unnat-ural fear of them,” said Wes Gillingham ofLivingston Manor. He is CatskillMountainkeeper’s associate director and a for-mer National Park Service park ranger.
“Snakes are part of the ecosystem that keepsthings in balance.”
RATTLERS’ GOOD SIDE
Due to indiscriminate killing of timber rat-tlers and loss of their habitat, the snake is onthe New York State’s Department ofConservation threatened list, making it unlaw-ful to kill or harm them. It is also illegal topublicly disclose den locations for this pro-tected snake, which in Pennsylvania is nowlisted as a species of the greatest conservationneed in the state’s Wildlife Action Plan.
In fact, rattlesnakes tend to be peaceable,long-lived and not inclined to bite. “Timberrattlesnakes are incredibly docile and seden-tary,” Gillingham said.
Timber rattlers live mainly in high terrainand prefer remote, rocky areas where they canbask in the sun. Cold-blooded, they raise theirbody temperature by lying in sunshine or low-ering it by crawling into the shade. “I saw oneswimming across the Delaware River to get inthe sun,” said Gillingham, “and then swim-ming back at night.”
At three to five feet in length, timber rat-tlesnakes are social with one another, bandingtogether in pods of snakes that are relatedthrough parentage, says a Cornell University
Like all snakes, timber rattlershave no eyelidsand neverclose theireyes. Betweenthe eyes andthe nostrils onboth sides arethe facial pits, which aresmall, darkheat-sensorsthat aid inhunting.

study. The average life span of a rattlesnake isabout 15 to 20 years.
Because their body temperature changeswith the temperature of their surroundings, our timber rattlers do hibernate. They findcaves or empty burrows and sleep until warmweather.
Like snakes of all kinds, timber rattlers“walk” on their ribs, which are fastened to asection of the backbone. Each section is con-nected by ball-and-socket joints, giving free-dom of movement.
At the end of the rattlesnake’s tail is its joint-ed appendage, its rattle made of keratin.Needed as a warning sign because a snakecan’t get away quickly, the buzzing sound ofthe rattle and the snake’s verbal hiss, says“Back off, you are getting too close to me.”
CATCHING FOOD, COZYING UP
Helpful in food gathering is the timber rat-tlesnake’s facial “pit” that lies between the
eyes and the nostrils on both sides of thesnake’s face. “The pits work as a satellite dish, interpreting to the brain of the rattlesnake,”said Gillingham.
The facial pits pick up delicate gradations ofheat from a prey animal. The snake is thenable to judge the distance and direction of thewarm object, striking the prey when it comes
into reach. The timberrattler uses fangs tosnap and strike atrodents, squirrels, frogsor young rabbits.Typically, the snakethen injects its victimwith venom that shootsthrough the hollowfangs, like medicationthrough a needle.

necessary. A snake must work to replenish itsstore of the poisonous liquid.
Mating season for timber rattlers takes placein early summer on into the fall. A femalebirths her young after a gestation period offour to five months. The babies are miniatureversions of the adults, including a tiny rattlesegment on the tail. In the fall, the young fol-low their parent’s scent trail back to the denfor the winter.
Timber rattlers do not go out of their way tobe aggressive with humans. Like all wild ani-mals, they much prefer to be left alone. In thecase of timber rattlesnakes, those encounter-ing the creature on a hiking trail should keep a10-foot distance between hiker and rattler.Provoking or harassing a snake is stupid anddangerous.
Keep in mind the thoughts of BenjaminFranklin on our timber rattlesnake: “She neverwounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him againstthe danger of treading on her.”

STORY AND PHOTOS BY PATRICIO ROBAYO The Mullet Brook Falls trail is otherwise
known as the Blue Trail East to MulletBrook Loop Trail in the Neversink River
Unique Area.
56 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2021
After walking a few miles, you can hear therush of the water from the Mullet Brook hit-ting the rocks creating Mullet Brook Falls. Afterfollowing the blue trail, you walk along the redtrail and then move on to the yellow trail. The more you follow the yellow trail, you canhear the roar of the water from the falls—afew more steps, a few decibels louder. Then you are there. Mullet Brooks Falls. The sound of the water rushing and the heightof the falls is awe-inspiring as you come faceto face with the roaring power of nature. As you stand there watching the water cascad-ing over the rocks and rush down, you thinkwho has stood where you stood. Over the mil-lions of years that the Neversink Gorge hasbeen created, thus creating the Mullet BrookFalls, what have those falls seen? Before you head back to the trailhead andtake a short drive back into Rock Hill for lunchor a refresher from the Trading Post, you lookback at the Falls and say to yourself, "Yeah, Iwill be back."
A trip to Mullet Brook Falls
This 4.4-mile heavily trafficked loop trail islocated near Rock Hill, New York. While this trailmight see a lot of foot traffic, you can takeadvantage of all the Mullet Brook Falls’ scenicbeauty if you are an early riser.
It’s a perfect trail for those who want to get intohiking or just need a brisk morning walk. Grabyour friends or go at it alone; the Mullet Loop
Trail never ceases to amaze.Once you step onto the trail, your mind seems
to just...let it all go. The hustle and bustle of lifesometimes gets in the way, and going for a hikehelps you clear your mind and allows you tofocus on something positive rather than the

problems and situations that life might bringyou.
As with all hikes, make sure to come preparedno matter how long the trail is. Bring water, wearproper boots, good pants, a proper shirt anddepending on the weather, a jacket. It’s alsogood to bring a first aid kit and a compass.
The trail loop has no cell service, so you can-not rely on that to get to where you are going. You can download a map before you head out or
you can take a photo of the map of the route youchoose at the trailhead. Don’t forget the bugspray. Another good idea is to let people knowwhere you are going.
Once you get on the trail and as soon as yourfeet hit the rocks below, you can hear waterrushing in the distance. Is it the falls? If you goearly in the morning, you can walk a while andlisten to the birds sing above you and the chip-munks scurrying about.
You are outdoors, let’s enjoy!
58 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, SUMMER 2021
Every once in a while, it's a good idea to catch your breath and to admire the scenery around you. You might look down andfind this rock stack formation near one of the brooks. Who made it? When did they make it? Rock stacking on trails has beendone for years and was used to show the way to go. Nowadays, folks like to stack to let everyone know they were there. While it looks great, it is sometimes suggested not to do this as you disturb the natural world when you displace rocks.
