Weestablished inour firstbookondemons that thedevil anddemons(orevilspirits)arefallenbeings.

Regardlessof theirprevious state, it standswithoutargumentthattheyfell,andthattheyseekembodimentinman.

TheWordofGodtellsusthisinMatthew12:

MATTHEW12:43-45

17 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, hewalketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findethnone.

18Thenhesaith,IwillreturnintomyhousefromwhenceI came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty,swept,andgarnished.

19 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven otherspiritsmorewicked thanhimself, and they enter in anddwellthere....

Wealsolearnaboutdemonsseekingembodimentinmaninthestory of the Gadarene demoniac in Mark 5. The madman of

Gadarawaspossessedwiththedevilandhadalegionofspiritsinhim.

Ifdemonscan'tembodyman,they'llseektogointoanimalsastheir second choice. When Jesus delivered the demoniac, theevilspiritsdidn'twantHimtosendthemoutofthecountry,sotheyaskedtogointoaherdofswine.

Jesusgavethempermission.

It'sobviouswhyevilspiritsseekembodimentinman.

Theydoitbecausetheyneedabodyinordertofindtheirfullestexpression in this physical world. They don't have a physicalbody, because they're spirits. But a physical body gives themgreaterfreedomtomanifestinthisrealm.

Theycanmanifesttoacertainextentinthespiritualrealmevenwithout a body. They can make themselves heard, felt, andknownastheycometooppress.Noneofusisimmunetothat,butthankGodwecanlearntoexerciseauthorityoverthedevilandevilspirits.Whenademondoesfindembodimentinaman,itmakesthatmanwhatitis.

TheWord of God tells us inMark 5 that when Jesus crossedovertheSeaofGalileetothecountryoftheGadarenes,amanpossessedwith anunclean spirit cameout of a tomb.Healsohada legionofdemons.Thisuncleanspiritcausedthemantobecomeunclean. It causedhim to tearoffhis clothes,wanderaround naked, and cut himself with stones. This is anillustration, no doubt, of an evil spirit in connection with thesexualappetiteofman.

This fellow was a sadist. When an unclean spirit controls aperson or embodies him, itmakes him unclean. A lying spiritmakesaliaroutofaperson.

In addition to these spirits finding embodiment in man, theysometimes attack people physically. That doesn't mean thepersonisdemonpossessed,butitmeanshisbodyisoppressedbythatspirit.

In Acts 10:38we are told about Peter preaching to Corneliusandhishousehold.PetersaidJesus"...wentaboutdoinggood,andhealing all thatwere oppressed of thedevil . . . . " HerePeter is calling sickness and disease satanic oppression. TheWordofGodtellsusthatwhenJesuswasdealingwithablindperson, Hewas dealing with a blind spirit (Matt. 12:22). Thespiritcausedthemantobeblind.

TheWord ofGod also speaks of a deaf spirit. Thismeans thespirit ispresentandmustbedealtwithbeforethepersoncan

hear.Noticewhat happenedwhen Jesus came down from theMountofTransfiguration.

MARK9:14-17

20 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a greatmultitude about them, and the scribes questioningwiththem.

21Andstraightwayallthepeople,whentheybeheldhim,weregreatlyamazed,andrunningtohimsalutedhim.

22Andheaskedthescribes,Whatquestionyewiththem?

23Andoneofthemultitudeansweredandsaid,Master,Ihavebroughtuntotheemyson,whichhathadumbspirit.

Matthew records that the man said his son was a lunatic.Evidently he had some kind of seizures, perhaps similar toepilepsy,andcouldn'ttalkbecauseoftheepilepsy.

The18thversecontinues:

MARK9:18-27

24Andwheresoeverhe takethhim,he tearethhim:andhe foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pinethaway:and I spake to thy disciples that they should casthimout;andtheycouldnot.

25He answerethhim, and saith,O faithless generation,how long shall I be with you? how long shall I sufferyou?bringhimuntome.

26Andtheybroughthimuntohim:andwhenhesawhim,straightwaythespirittarehim;andhefellontheground,andwallowedfoaming.

27Andheaskedhisfather,Howlongisitagosincethiscameuntohim?Andhesaid,Ofachild.

28Andofttimesithathcasthimintothefire,andintothewaters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing,havecompassiononus,andhelpus.

29 Jesus saiduntohim, If thou canst believe, all thingsarepossibletohimthatbelieveth.

31 When Jesus saw that the people came runningtogether, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him,

Thou dumband deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out ofhim,andenternomoreintohim.

32Andthespiritcried,andrenthimsore,andcameoutofhim:andhewasasonedead;insomuchthatmanysaid,Heisdead.

33ButJesustookhimbythehand,andliftedhimup;andhearose.

When I talk about demon possession, I'm not talking aboutinstances likethis.Thiswasacasewherethedemonwas inaperson'sbody.Butwhenoneisfullypossessedofthedevil,heispossessed spirit, soul, and body. The body can merely beoppressedandevilspiritscanbeinthehouseinwhichyoulive(yourbody)andnotactually(inthefullestsense)beinyou.

I've heard preachers say things that havemademe cringe onthe inside. They leave the impression that all Christians havedemonsinthem.Thatisn'ttrue.Thesepeopledon'tdividemancorrectly. Paul said inFirst Thessalonians 5:23, "And the veryGod of peace sanctifyyouwholly; and I pray God yourwholeSPIRITandSOULandBODYbepreservedblamelessunto thecomingofourLordJesusChrist."

ThatScripturetellsusmanisspirit,soul,andbody.

Someonesaidthatmanisatripartitebeing:partisspirit,partis soul, and part is body. But I don't like to say it that way,becauseitisn'ttrue.Thatismisleading.Manactuallyisaspirit.Hehasasoul,andhelivesinabody.

Whenexpressedlikethat,ittakesonadifferentmeaning.Icanprovemystatement.

Whenmandiesphysically,hestilllives.TheBiblesayshedoes.Paul,inSecondCorinthians5:1,says,"Forweknowthatifourearthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have abuildingofGod,anhousenotmadewithhands,eternal in theheavens."He'stalkingabouttheinwardmanandtheoutwardmanhere.

PaulalsosaysinSecondCorinthians4:16,"Forwhichcausewefaint not: but though our OUTWARD man perish, yet theINWARDmanisreneweddaybyday."

SecondCorinthians5:6-8tellsus:

34 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that,whilstweareathomeinthebody,weareabsentfromthe

WhenI'mabsentfromthebody,I'mgoingtobepresentwiththeLord. Paul, of course, is writing to Christians. He said, inwritingtotheChurchatPhilippi:

PHILIPPIANS1:21-23

37For tome to live isChrist, and todie is gain. [It's againtodieaphysicaldeath.]

38ButifIliveintheflesh,thisisthefruitofmylabour:yetwhatIshallchooseIwotnot.

39 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire todepart,andtobewithChrist;whichisfarbetter.

Heissayingthatheisgoingtodepart.HeisgoingtobewithChrist.Themanontheinsideistherealman.

Heisaspiritman.Youareaspiritbeing.Youhaveasoulthatiscomposedofintellectualandemotionalqualities,butyouliveinabody.

Our spirits are rebornwhenwe're born again. First Peter 3:4says,"Butletitbethehiddenmanoftheheart...."Yourheartisyourspirit.SecondCorinthians5:17says,"ThereforeifanymanbeinChrist,heisanewcreature:oldthingsarepassedaway;behold,allthingsarebecomenew."

Thismanbeingtalkedaboutherecannotbethebody,becauseyoudonothaveanewbodywhenyouarebornagain. (ThankGod,wewill have a newbody someday.) It is themanon theinsidewhoisanewman.

Thismanwhoisanewcreaturedoesn'thaveadevilinhim.Hehas thenature ofGod in himandnot thenature of the devil.Wouldn't that be an ugly creature — half-God and half-devil?No, the newman doesn't have the nature of the devil in himanymore.Thatnaturehehastodealwithisthefleshlynature.It ishisbodywhichhasnotyetbeenredeemed.He'sgoingtohavetodosomethingaboutthat.Godisn'tgoingtodoanythingaboutit.TheScripturesays,"...oldthingsarepassedaway...."(2Cor.5:17).Iftherewereanydevilsordemonsinyourspirit,they are gone. That old nature of spiritual death has passedaway.Allthingshavebecomenew.

YouknowjustaswellasIthatthingshaven'tbecomenewwiththebodywhenyou'rebornagain.Youhavethesamebodyyouhad. You have the same inclinations you had. The body is not

redeemed. Romans 8 says we're waiting for that. It hasn'thappenedyet,butitwillwhenJesuscomesagain.

With the body and our senseswe contact this physicalworld.Satanisthegodofthisworld.Youcanreadilysee,then,thathecanhavecontactwiththisworld.ThephysicalmanoperatesintheworldwhereSatanisgod.

Godisgodinthespiritworld.

Paulspeaksabouttheprinceofthepoweroftheair(Eph.2:2).Spiritsareheretryingtogetintous.They'retryingtoworkonthe physical. The devil is the author of sickness and disease.There wasn't any sickness and disease here before Adamsinned.GodhadseenthatHiscreationwasgood(Gen.1:31).

Itwas afterSatanbecamegodof thisworld that hebegan topollute the air with disease germs so small they couldn't beseenwiththenaturaleye.

IsSatanAlwaystheCauseofDisease?

Dr.JohnG.LaketraveledtoAfricaasamissionaryattheturnofthe century. He originally had been aMethodistminister, buthadgottendiscouraged.Hequittheministryandwentintotheinsurancebusiness,becomingverysuccessful.

Later, he got back into fellowship with God and received thebaptism in the Holy Spirit. He went to Africa, where hepreached and established hundreds of churches in five years.Whilehewasthere,anoutbreakofbubonicplagueoccurred.

In the book The John G. Lake Sermons on Dominion OverDemons,DiseaseandDeath,editedbyGordonLindsay,Dr.Lakerecalled that he and a Dutchman buried many who had diedfromtheplague.Theywentintothepeople'shomes,carriedthebodies out, dug the graves, and buried the dead. "Sometimeswewould put three or four in one grave," Lake noted. Yet heandtheDutchmannevercontractedthedisease.

The plaguewas so severe that the British government sent ashipload of doctors and medical supplies to South Africa torelievethesuffering.

HearingofLake'swork,oneofthedoctorssentforhim.

HeaskedLake,"Whathaveyoubeenusingtoprotectyourself?...Weconcludedthatifamancouldstayonthegroundasyouhave, and keepministering to the sick and burying the dead,youmusthaveasecret.Whatisit?"

Lakeanswered,"Brother,thatisthe'lawoftheSpiritoflifein

Christ Jesus.' I believe that just as long as I keepmy soul incontactwiththelivingGodsothatHisSpiritisflowingintomysoulandbody,thatnogermwilleverattachitselftome,fortheSpiritofGodwillkillit."

The doctor suggested that Lake use the same preven-tativesthatthedoctorswereusingasprotectionfromtheplague.ButLake, who was deeply interested in science, suggested ascientificexperimentinstead.

He said, "If youwill go over to one of these dead people andtake the foam that comes out of their lungs after death, thenput it under the microscope, you will see masses of livinggerms.Youwillfindtheyarealiveuntilareasonabletimeafteramanisdead.YoucanfillmyhandwiththemandIwillkeepitunder the microscope, and instead of these germs remainingalive,theywilldieinstantly."

Lakewrote,"Theytrieditandfounditwastrue."

When they wanted to know how it worked, Lake explained,"That is 'the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.'When aman's spirit and a man's body are filled with the blessedpresenceofGod,itoozesoutoftheporesofyourfleshandkillsthegerms."

Lake had found the secret. It is knowledge acted upon thatbringsresults.Itdoesn'tworkautomatically.

Thesedemonsdoattackusspiritually,andthedevilisactuallybehind the thing.Sometimes it is sicknessanddiseasecausedbygerms,butthedevilisbehinditanyhow.

He isanenemy tomanand toGod.We fight thatenemywitheveryweaponthatisatourdisposal.

Sometimespeopledon'tunderstandwhywecastthedeviloutofpeoplewhenweprayforthem.Onetimeapastorcametome,not understandingwhy I had done this to one of his deaconswhen praying for him. The preacher thought I was inferringthatthedeaconwasdemonpossessed.ButIwasonlyindicatinghewasoppressed.

I hadn't said the demonwas in the inwardman; itwas in hisbody.(Youmightliveinahousethathastermitesinit,butthatdoesn'tmeanyouhavetermitesinyou.)

PresentYourBody

Paul talks to us about presenting the body as a sacrifice inRomans12:

ROMANS12:1,2

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies ofGod,that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be yetransformed by the renewing of yourmind, that yemayprovewhatisthatgood,andacceptable,andperfect,willofGod.

It astoundedmewhen I fully realizedwhat these versesweresaying.Paulisn'twritingtosinners.Heiswritingtothesaints.Heiswritingtoborn-again,Spirit-filledbelievers.Heistellingthem even though they are born again, their bodies aren'taffected.

Sotherebirthisnotaphysicalormentalexperience.

Being filledwith theSpirit isnotphysicalormental.Botharespiritual experiences which eventually affect the physical andmental.

Afterwe'rebornagainandfilledwiththeHolySpirit,we'retopresentourbodiestoGod.Heisn'tgoingtodoanythingaboutthat;it'suptous.Ifwedon'tpresentourbodiestoGod,andifthe inward man isn't in control, then evil spirits will haveaccess.Theycandominateusthroughtheflesh.

Ifwedon't get ourminds renewedwith theWordofGod, theMINDwill sidewith theBODYagainst theSPIRIT.Wewill belike the Corinthians who were held in a babyhood state ofChristianity.TheywerebornagainandfilledwiththeSpirit,yettheywerecarnal.Apersoncanhaveall thegifts of theSpiritoperatinginhislifeandstillbecarnal.

CarnalChristianscanbefilledwiththeHolySpirit.

Onewomanwasaskingmeaboutthis;shecouldn'tunderstandit. I askedher if shewere filledwith theHolySpirit, and shesaidyes.ItoldherthatprovedcarnalChristianscouldbefilled!Anyofusoughttobeabletoseethat.

Manytimesmyhearttellsmeonethingandmyheadtellsmesomething else. My heart knows more than my head aboutspiritualthingsbecauseIcontacttheHolySpiritwithmyspirit.But it is hard to get across to my head everything my heartknows.

SometimeswhenIpreach,peoplemightshudderbecausetheycan'tunderstandwhatisbeingsaid.Butinyourheartitsetsupathrillbecauseyourheartknowsit'strue.Yourspiritknowsthe

truth.

DividingtheSoulandSpirit

Inmystudiesithasalwaysbeenveryeasyformetodistinguishbetween the body and themind. But it becomes a littlemoredifficult when it comes to dividing the soul and spirit. We'venevergottenintoitlikeweshould.I'vereadtextbooksusedintheologicalseminariesandthewaytheypresentthissubjectisconfusing.OnlytheWordofGodcandivide:

HEBREWS4:12

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, andsharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to thedividingasunderofsoulandspirit,andofthejointsandmarrow,andisadiscernerofthethoughtsandintentsoftheheart.

Youcan'tfindintheBiblewherethesoulandspiritarespokenofas the same thing. I've talked to somegreatpreachersandteachers who say that the soul and the spirit are the samething,buttheycanbedivided.

That can't be true; they can't be the same thing. In FirstThessalonians 5:23 Paul says, "And the very God of peacesanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole SPIRIT andSOULandBODYbepreservedblamelessuntothecomingofourLordJesusChrist. " If they'reone,whydidn'the include themasone?

James wrote to Christians and told them to receive theengraftedwordwhichwasabletosavetheirsouls(James1:21).ThatisthegreatestneedoftheChurchtoday.InJohn3:6JesussaidtoNicodemus,"Thatwhichisbornofthefleshisflesh;andthatwhich isbornof theSpirit isspirit. " TheNewBirth is aspiritualbirth.Butthebodyandthesoulstillhavetobedealtwith.You do that. Paul saidwe should be transformed by therenewingofourminds.

WehavereadPsalm23:3manytimes:"Herestorethmysoul. "TheHebrewwordfor"restore"andtheGreekwordfor"renew"mean identically the same thing. You can restore a piece offurnituretoitsoriginalcondition.

Wehavetorestoreorrenewouremotionalrealm.WedoitwiththeWordofGod.

Ourspirits,however,arereborn.I'llneverbelievethataborn-againChristianwalkinginfellowshipwithGodhasademoninhisspirit.Youcan'tfindanyScripturetocon-vincemeofit.Idoknowthatsometimesinthecaseofphysicalsicknessthereisa

spiritthathastobedealtwithinthebody.

In 1956, I was holding a meeting in a Full Gospel church inPortland,Oregon.Onthelastnightofthemeetingtherewasanunusual occurrence. I prayed for three small childrenwho allweretroubledwithepilepticseizures.

Boththemotherandfatherweresaved.WhenI laidmyhandson the first child, I knew a spirit was causing the seizures.Sometimessicknesscanbejustaphysicalthing,butIknewthistime it was a spirit. (I do believe, though, that the devil isalwaysbehindit.)SoIcastthatspiritout.WhenIlaidhandsonthesecondchild,Ihadthesamemanifestation;Icastthatspiritout. When I laid hands on the third child, I had the samemanifestationagain,andcastthespiritout.

The next year when we were in Vancouver, Washing-ton, theparentscametovisitourmeetingandtoldusthechildrenneverhad had another seizure. The youngsters hadn't been demonpossessed;theyhadmerelyallowedthisspirittogetintotheirbodies.Othershavealloweddemonsintotheirsouls.

DemonsintheEmotionalRealm

YouknowmytestimonyofhowIwasraisedupfromthebedofsickness.Mymotherusedtotellmeshewishedshecouldtakemy place. But her own life had been a tragedy. Demons ofworry, depression, and oppression got into her emotional orsoulishrealmandcaptivatedher.

Mydaddy had leftwhen Iwas about 5 or 6, leaving herwithfourlittlechildrentoraise.Hehadcomefromagoodfamily.Infact,mygrandfatherhadbeenconsideredamillionairebeforethecrashof'29.Mydaddy,however,hadbeentheonlyson,andafter he got married, he wanted everyone to continue givingthingstohim.Hehadbeensetupinbusiness,buthelostalotofmoney.

Mymothermarriedhimanywayandsaid if shemadeherbedhard she would lie on it. She didn't want to go back to hermother,soshetriedtomakealivingforusherself.

All the trouble she had began to affect her mentally andphysically, and she began to lose her sight until she becametotallyblind.Alittledogwouldleadhertowork.

Sheworkedwhen shewasblind andno one knew it.When itwasfinallydiscovered,shehadtoquit.

Thedoctorswhoexaminedhersaidtheycouldn'tfindanythingphysically wrong with her that would cause the blindnessexceptanerve.Sheeventuallyhadacompletenervous,physical

andmentalbreakdown.Butshestillwouldn'taskforhelp.

Onetimewegotrealhungryandoneoftheneighborchildrencame out of his house eating a peanut butter and crackersandwich.Hebrokeitintwoandgavemehalfofit.Itookabiteandthenfaintedbecauseofthehunger.

When his mother came out and saw me, she went to mymother'sfolksandtoldthemhowhungryIwas.Theycameandgot us andmymother gaveup entirely. For several years shehadmentalproblemsandwouldeventrytokillherself.

MymotherwasaChristian,butshedidn'tknowhowtobelieveGodandappropriateHispromises.Itissosad.

Somebodymightask,"Ifshehadkilledherself,wouldshehavebeensaved?"Certainly,yes.Shedidn'thaveanyremembranceof attempting suicide later. She would have denied it. Thosedemons of worry and oppression had simply gotten into heremotionalrealm.

DeliverancefortheInsane

Yearsagoawomantoldmywifeandmethathersisterwasaninmate in the Wichita Falls, Texas, asylum. She said she hadbeenbelievingGod that I couldminister to the sister. I said Iwouldturnthematterovertomyprayergroup.Wehadalittlegroupofwomeninthechurchwhocouldprayheavenandearthtogether!Theygotanswers!

About ten days after we had prayed, the authorities said thiswomancouldcomehomeonfurlough.Theysentalettertoherfamily saying she was no longer violent, but that she wouldalways need institutional care. She had been in a padded cellfor two years, violently insane. Her general health haddeteriorated, and the authorities felt that if the change inenvironment didn't help her, she probably wouldn't livemuchlonger.

IlearnedthatthiswomanhadbeenaFullGospelminister,butwhenshehadgonethroughmenopauseshehadlosthermind.Duringthattimeademonhadgottenintotheemotionalpartofhermakeup.Sheeitherconsciouslyorunconsciouslyyieldedtothat thing. She began to worry and brood and becameemotionallyupset.

In May 1943, she was brought to our parsonage. We wereintroduced to her and immediately she began to quoteScriptures.Theystartedrunningoutofhermouthlikewater.Ididn'tknowwhattodo.IsaidanyonewhoknewScriptureslikethat must really know God. Her eyes began to flash and shegrabbedherhairandpulleditandsaid,

"No!" She said she couldn't be saved because she hadcommittedtheunpardonablesin.

Aspirithadgottenintohersoulandhadmadeherbelieveshehadcommittedtheunpardonablesin.Thesistertookholdofherandbegantoshakehertomakeherbequiet.Wesatdownandsheneverbattedaneye.

Mywifeand Iwent togeta little red-hairedwoman fromourprayercirclewhoreallyknewhowtopray.

ThankGodforpeoplewhoknowhowtopray.Whilewewereinthecarwaitingforher,IbegantotalktotheLordaboutwhathadhappened.Iknewthewomanmerelycouldbesick.Peoplecanbesickintheheadjustastheycaninthestomach.YoucanprayforthemandexpectGodtohealthem.

But Ialsoknewanevil spirit couldbe thecause. In thatcasethespiritwouldhavetobediscernedanddealtwith.ItoldtheLordthatHewasgoingtohavetohelpme.Ididn'tknowwhattodo.Ispentmytimeprayingthiswayuntil thewomancameout,andthenweallwentbacktoourhouse.

Weallstartedpraying,andsoonwewereprayingintheSpirit.TheHolySpiritwantedme togo stand in front of thewomanandcommandtheuncleandeviltocomeoutofherintheNameof Jesus. After much persuasion I did it. She didn't look anydifferent afterwards; her sister bundled her up and took herhome.

That was on a Saturday. On Monday afternoon her sisterreturnedandaskedustopraybecausethewomanhadhadanattacklikeshehadwhenshefirstlosthermind.

Shebecameviolent.ItoldherthedevilknewIhadspokentheWordof faithandhehad togo. I toldherhewas just tearingherbeforeheleft.

In the Bible, after Jesus rebuked an evil spirit in people, thedevilwouldsometimestearthembeforehecameout.

I told her that after he did that she would be all right. Sureenough,thatiswhathappened.Whentheattackwasover,hermindwasallright.

Since thewomanwasonlyon furlough,shehad togoback tothe institution. But later she was pronounced well anddismissed. I don't believe that this FullGospelminister had adevilinherspirit.Idobelieve,though,thatatatimeinherlifewhenshewasnervousandunstable,sheyieldedtoanevilspiritanditgotintohersoul—intotherealmofemotion.Ittookoverhermindandworkedthroughherbody.

DemonsintheBody

I saw some things along these same lines while teaching inForthWorthonetime.AwomanwhomIknewcametomeaboutaproblem.Sheandherhusbandhadpastoredachurchnearmeatone time. Iknewsheneededhelpbefore sheevencame toseeme,so Ibeganteachingpublic-ly insteadof talking toherpersonally(Ididn'twanttoembarrassher).

Whenshecametomeshetoldmehowmuchmyteachinghadhelpedher.Shesaiditseemedasthoughadarkcloudhadbeenlifted.Sheexplainedthatablackcloudhadhungoverherheadfora longtimeandshehadn'thadanyonetowhomshecouldtalk.ShesaidIhadremovedthecloud,butItoldherGodhaddone it. I toldher Ihadtaughtonthissubject forherbenefit,sinceIknewallaboutherproblembecauseJesushadtoldme.

Thiswoman'shusbandhadbeenawonderfulChristian.

Hewassweet,kind,andgood.Onedayatafellowshipmeetingwhere I was speaking I had heard him talking to some otherministers. He was nearing 70 at the time. He had been apioneer inPentecost, andhehadhad thebaptismof theHolySpiritbeforehisdenominationwasevenorganized.

Foryearsheneverhadgonetoadoctor.Healwayshadenjoyedgoodhealth,butfinallyhebegantohavetroublephysically.Thedoctor found out he had high blood pressure.He figured thismanwouldn't takeanymedicine, soheputhimonadiet andtoldhimtoslowdown.

Since theman's wife was also a preacher, the doctor said heshould let her do some preaching while he took a leave ofabsence. He did let her preach a little, but he didn't take aleave.Hesoonbegan to feelbetteranddecidedhewouldgetbackintheharness.Whenhedid,hisbloodpressurecreptupagain.Sonowinsteadoftakingaleaveofabsence,hedecidedhewouldresign.Hedidn'twant tobeaburdentohischurch.(They should have been obligated to him, however, as he hadestablishedthatchurchthirtyyearsearlier.)

AtthistimeIwas28yearsold,andthismanwasoldenoughtobemygrandpa.TheLordstartedtalkingtomeabouthim,andIknew he was missing God. I knew he shouldn't resign thatchurch,but thatafternoonhegotupand resigned.He shouldhavestayedthereandhadanincomeandlethiswifedomostofthepreaching.Hemighthavelivedmuchlongerifhehad.Buthe leftwith no income andwent to livewith one of his sons,wherehehadastroke.

Later he and his wife moved to Texas and he had anotherstroke. Thatwas followedby a third stroke, although it didn't

killhim(hedidn'tdieuntilafterthefourthstroke).

Hiswifetoldmelaterthatsheandherdaughterhadbeenwithhiminthehospital.Hewaspartiallyparalyzed.

At times hewasn't himself.When she came into the room hewouldsometimessay toher, "YouoldSo-and-so,"andwithhisgoodleghewouldkickherandknockheraround.

Theywouldprayandpray.Hewouldprayintonguesandbeallrightforawhile,butheneverdidgetdelivered.

Hiswifesaidthatafterhearingmesheknewwhatsheshouldhavedone.Inherhusband'sbrainweredepletedbraincellsandhecouldn'tuseonearm.Hecouldn'toverseehisbody,so thedevil came to take advantage of him, operating through hisbody—nothisspirit.SherealizedsheshouldhavestoodthereandcommandedthedeviltotakehishandsoffGod'sproperty.Iassuredherhewouldhavedoneit.

AnUnusualCase

Evil spirits get into some peoplewhen they are children, andeventhoughthepersongetsbornagainlater,thespiritsareinthesoul.Thesedemonsthatattack inthephysicalandsoulishrealmsmustbediscernedandcastout.Apreachertoldmeonceabout hismother,whowas some 80 years of age andwas anold-timesaintwhohadbeenfilledwiththeSpiritforyears.Hesaidshehadhadastrokeandcouldn'ttalk.Shecouldhearbutshecouldn'tanswer.Hewouldaskheraquestionandtellhertoraiseonefingeriftheanswerwere"yes"andtwofingersiftheanswer were "no." She always would raise her fingers, so heknewshecouldhear.

When the family would pray she would burst out praying intongueswiththem,yetsheneverwouldsayawordinEnglish.Heaskedmewhythiswas.I toldhimtheHolySpirit isnot inyourheadbutinyourspirit,andallhertroublewasinherhead.Hervocalchordswerejustasgoodasever.

Whenyouspeak in tongues,youspeakoutofyourspirit.Paulsaid that his spirit prayed. Deaf and dumb people speakwithothertongueswhentheyreceivetheHolySpirit,becausetheyspeakoutoftheirspirits.

HealingofaMarriage

Iwasholdingameetinginacertainplace,andforthreenightsinarowayoungmarriedwomanwouldstayatthealtar,cryingpathetically,aftereveryonewasdismissed.

Shewouldprayintongues.Iknewitwasherspiritcryingout

forhelpanddeliverance. Iasked theLord toshowmehowtohelpthisyoungwoman.

SuddenlyIhadavisionofherwhenshewas9yearsold.Isawhercominghomefromschooloneday,andwhenshecameintothehouseshefoundhermother inbedwithanotherman.Youcanunderstandwhatthatwoulddototheemotionsofa9yearold.

Shewasnowinher20s.IsawintheSpiritthathertroublewasmaritaltrouble.Isawthatshehadbeenmarriedtwoyearsbutbecauseofthisemotionalblockwasunabletoconsummatethemarriage.Itwasbreakingthemarriageup.

Iwenttothepastorandaskedhimifheknewwhatwaswrongwithher.HeaskedifIdid,andItoldhimIdidbecausetheLordhadshownme.HesaidifIknewwhattodo,Ishouldgoaheadanddoit.Hehadprayedandfastedandtalkedtobothofthem,butshewasgettingreadytoleaveherhusband.Hewasn'tevenaChristian,butshewassavedandfilledwiththeSpirit.

Iwent to theyoungwomanandasked if I could speak toher.ShesaidIcould.Iaskedherifsheknewwhatwaswrongwithher.ThensheaskedmeifIdid,andItoldheryes.SheaskedifthepastorhadtalkedtomeandIsaidno.

I toldheraboutmyvision.She thought Iwasa fortune teller,but I told her what I had experienced was from the Spirit ofGod.After that, she toldme thatwhat Ihadseenwasexactlywhathadhappened.Shesaidshelovedherhusbandbutneverhadbeenabletobeawifetohim.

I toldher that itwaswrong forhermother tobe inbedwithanotherman,butthatmarriagewasn'twrong.AftergivingheraScriptureandtalkingtoher,Ilaidhandsonherandcastthatthingout.

Thenextyear Iwentback topreachameeting thereandsheand her husband had a bouncing baby boy whom they hadnamedafterme.ThehusbandwasnowsavedandfilledwiththeHolySpirit.Thehomewastogether.

Idon'tbelievethatwomanhadanythinginherspirit.

Butthisthingthathadgottenintoheremotionalrealmorsoulwhen she was 9 years old still dominated her and had to bedealtwith.

Now can you understand why we have problems in ourchurches? We sometimes act as though problems don't exist.But there is a day coming (we're in the edge of it right now)whenwe'll see and know these things as we ought.We'll not

have togoout in theworld to theunsaved forhelp.People inthe church shouldn't go to unsaved marriage counselors forhelp.There'shelpinGod.

Chapter2HowToDealWithEvilSpirits

We have found from the portions of Scripture referred to inVolume One that Satan was, in the beginning, a coveringcherub, but that he and his angels are now fallen beings.Wefoundalsothatthesebeingsseekembodimentinman.

We readhowanunclean spirit tries to goback into the samemanithascomeoutof(Matt.12:43-45).Let'snotgivethedevilanymoreroomtomovein.WealsohavetherecordconcerningthemadmanofGadarawhohadalegionofdemonsinhim.

Sometimeago Iwaswatchinga televisionnewscast inoneofourlargercities.Amedicaldoctorwasbeinginterviewedwhilehewas visiting a scientific convention in that city.During thecourseoftheinterviewthereportermentionedthestridesthathadbeenmadeinmedicine.

Thedoctorsmiledandsaidthegreatestthingthey'ddonewasto prove Jesus Christ was a fake. This seemed to "jar" thereporter.

Thedoctorwentontoexplainwhathemeant.Hesaidtheyhadexplodedtheideathatthereissuchathingasademonhavingsomethingtodowithsickness.Hesaid,infact,thatthereisnosuchthingasadevilordemon.

Thatmanwasmotivatedby a demon anddidn't realize it.Hewasindarkness.Thereisaspiritworld,andthatworldisevenmore real than this physical world. Out there in that spiritworld,thereisGod.Outthereinthatspiritworld,thereisthedevil. Out there in that spirit world, there are angels anddemons.Wehavetodealwiththeminourearthwalk.

InEphesians6:12Paulsaid,"Wewrestlenotagainst fleshandblood. " When we can recognize our enemies, we will beequipped tomeet them; but ifwedon't knowabout them,wecanunconsciouslyopenthedoortothedevil.

Evil spirits not only seek embodiment in man, they seek tooppress man with sickness and disease. We saw that Petercalled sickness and disease satanic oppression in Acts 10:38.WehavearecordintheGospelsthatJesusdealtwithSatananddemonswhendealingwithdisease.

The woman who came into the synagogue had a spirit ofinfirmity. (Whether or not there is an actual presence of ademon oppressing a body physically in sickness and disease,

youcanbesurethedevilisbehindthewholething.)

TheWordofGodtellsusthatwhenSatanisfinallybarredfromhumancontact, therewill benothing thatwillhurtordestroy(Rev. 21:4). But we can exercise authority over the devil andoversicknessanddiseasetodayintheNameofJesus.

Someone askedme, "If the devil is behind sickness,why is itthatsomeconditionswillrespondtomedicalscienceandcanbehelped?Canyou treat thedevilwithmedicine?"Thedevil liesback of everything that hurts or destroys. Men have learnedthroughexperimentation thatcertain thingsexerciseauthorityoverothers.

Penicillin, for instance, will exercise authority over certaingerms. But the Name of Jesus exercises authority overeverything!

Wigglesworth 's Deliverance Smith Wigglesworth said thatwhenhefirstreceivedagleamoflightonthesubjectofdivinehealing, he and his wife decided they would go all out. TheywouldtrustGoduntiltheydied.Theywouldn'ttakeanykindofmedicineorseeadoctor.Thatmaysoundextremetosome,butthatwastheirconviction.

A short time later,Wigglesworth fell in thepulpit, doubledupwith appendicitis. He was taken home, and people prayed allnightwithhim.Whenmorningcame,hewaswornoutfromthepain and suffering. He told his wife he believed this was hishomecall.He finally hadadoctor examinehim so an inquestwouldn't be needed. The doctor saidWigglesworth's appendixhadburstandpoisonhadspreadthroughouthissystem.Therewerenomiracledrugsforit.

He said Wigglesworth would die whether he underwent anoperation or not. The operation would only cause him to diemoreeasily.Wigglesworthsaidhewasn'tgoingtosubmittoanoperation.Hewouldjustdie.

Finally the doctor left. Wigglesworth was in a semi-consciousconditionandwoulddriftawaynowandthen.

Hiswifewasdownstairsattendingtotheplumbingbusiness.Heheard the door open, and looking up, he saw an elderly ladyabout82,andaboywhowas14yearsold.

He knew this woman considered anything that attacked thephysicalbodytobeofthedevil.Hesaidhewouldhaveargueduntildoomsdayabouthavingadevilinhim,buttheydidn'twaitforanyargument.

Theboyjumpeduponthebed,dughisfistintoWigglesworth's

side,anddemandedthedeviltocomeoutintheNameofJesus.Instantly Wigglesworth was all right. He said he got up anddressed, went downstairs, asked his wife if there were anyordersin,andwentouttodosomeplumbing.

Whenthedoctorcameback,PollyWigglesworthrantohimandtold him her husbandwas out on a job. The doctor remarkedthat Wigglesworth "would be brought back a corpse." In hismeetings,Wigglesworthusedtosaythathewasthatcorpse.

He said after that, he prayed for people with appendicitis oneverycontinentof theearth.Healwayswoulddighis fist intotheir sideandcommand thedevil tocomeout in theNameofJesus. He said he'd never had a case yet in which a personwasn'tupanddressedin15minutes.

Youcan'targuewithsuccess!

AFullGospelministeroncetoldmethat thiscouldn'tbetrue.Hesaid ifaspiritwerecausingsickness,howcouldyoucutaspiritoutofaperson?Henotedthatpeoplecanbeoperatedonforappendicitisandafterwardsthey'reallright.Sohesaidthatcouldn't be thedevil, because you can't cut thedevil out of aperson.

Thismakesmethinkofapreacherwhotoldontheradioaboutachurchmemberwhosehusbandwasascoundrel.

Themanwould come home drunk and beat her up. She keptrequestingprayerforhim.Onetimeshecameintotalktothisminister.Hetoldhersheshouldjustknockthe"hell"outofhimwithaballbatwhenhecameinlikethat.Butyoucan'tknockthedeviloutofpeople.

Youcan'tcutaspiritoutofapersoneither.Yet,ifacertainpartofthebodywereaffectedbyaspirit,thennaturally,whenthatpart was cut out there wouldn't be anything for the spirit toaffect.Itisn'tamatterofcuttingoutthedevil—thatoughttobeplainenough.

UseYourAuthority

These spirits do oppress people,whatever kind of spirits theyare—thatishowtheyoperate.

Therearedegreesofdemonicoppression.Sometimesapersonis more oppressed than he is at other times. There also aredegrees of possession — a person can be more or lesspossessed.

But,thankGod,we'retheoneswhohaveauthority inthis life.Wecandetermine,bytakingadvantageofwhatbelongstous,

tobeovercomers,controlledbytheSpirit.

IwillneverforgetwhentheLordappearedtomeinavisionin1952inthestateofOklahoma.Hesaid,"I'mgoingtotalktoyouaboutthedevil,demons,anddemonpossession.

This experience lasted about an hour and a half. Jesus stoodbeforemeas Iknelt.Suddenlyanevilspirit that looked likeamonkey jumped up between us and caused a black cloud toappear.Icouldn'tseeJesus,butIcouldhearHim.Hekeptrighton talking.Meanwhile, the spirit threwhis arms and legs outandholleredinashrillvoice,

"Yakety-yak,yakety-yak,yakety-yak."

Hekeptonactingthatwayandthoughtsranthroughmymindfasterthanmachinegunbulletscouldfire.

I thought, Dear Lord! I'm missing what Jesus is saying(instructionHewasgivingmeaboutdealingwith thedevil). Iheard the sound of His voice, but I couldn't distinguish thewordsbecauseofthis"yakety-yak"

business.Icouldn'tseeJesusbecausethecloudwasthere.

ThenI thought,Doesn't Jesusknow?Doesn'tHeknow I'mnothearing Him? Why doesn't Jesus do something about it? WhydoesHeallowit?

Finally,indesperation,Ispoketothespirit.Isaid,

"IcommandyoutoshutupintheNameofJesus!"

WhenIsaidthat,hehitthefloorlikeasackofsalt:"kerplop."Thedarkclouddisappeared,andIcouldseeJesus.ThenJesussaidsomethingthatabsolutelyastonishedme—somethingthatupendedmytheology.

(WegetsoconcernedabouttheologythatwemisstheBible.)

Jesuspointedtothatlittlefellowlyingthere(andnotonlylyingthere— hewas shaking all over, trembling fromhead to footandwhining). Jesus said, "If youhadn'tdonesomethingaboutthat,Icouldn'thave."

Listenandreign!Letitslipbyyouandbeinslavery!

Inmyastonishment,Isaid,"Lord!IknowImisunderstoodYou.I'msureIdid.Youdidn'tsayyoucouldn't"—and Ipointed tothat little fellow still lying there whimpering and shaking allover—"YousaidYouwouldn't,didn'tYou?"

Jesussaid, "Isaid,"—andHepointed tohim—"ifyouhadn't

donesomethingaboutthat,Icouldn't."

Now understand "that" didn't include just the demon; itincluded the dark cloud that shut off the vision of Jesus andheaven. It included communication that didn't get through—prayers,orwhatever.

Isaid,"Lord,Iknowsomethinghappenedtome.Youdidn'tsayYoucouldn't;YousaidYouwouldn't,didn'tYou?"

And very emphaticallyHe said, "No! I didn't say Iwouldn't; IsaidIcouldn't."

"OdearLord,"Isaid."Ican'tacceptthat.It'sagainsteverythingI'veeverbelieved!It'sagainsteverythingI'veeverpreached!"

Isaid,"Iwon'tacceptanyvisionunlessYoucanproveittomefromtheBible—particularlytheNewTestament.

YousaidinYourWord, 'Inthemouthoftwoorthreewitnesseseverywordmaybeestablished'"(Matt.18:16).

DoyouthinkHegotangrywithme?No,Hesmiledsosweetlyandsaid,"I'llgoyouonebetter;I'llgiveyoufour."

He said, "There's no place in the New Testament where theChurchorChristianbelieversaretoldtoprayagainstthedevil.Toprayagainstthedevilistowasteyourtime."

When He said that to me I said, "Dear Lord! I've wasted somuchtime!"

He said, "TheNewTestament tells believers themselves to dosomething about the devil. And if they don't, there won't beanything done. I've done all I'm ever going to do about thedevil."

Thatcameasarealshocktome."Now,"Hesaid,"I'llgiveyouthe four referenceswhich prove that. First of all, inMatthew28,whenIarosefromthedead,Isaid,'Allpowerisgivenuntome in heaven and in earth' (Matt. 28:18). The word 'power'means 'authority.' " (If you stopped reading right there you'dsay, "Why,dearLord Jesus,Youdohaveauthorityhereon theearth.")ButHesaid,"IimmediatelydelegatedmyauthorityonearthtotheChurch."InMark16wearetoldtogointoalltheworld;we'reauthorizedtodothat.

MARK16:15-18

40Andhesaidunto them,Goye intoall theworld,andpreachthegospeltoeverycreature.

41Hethatbelievethandisbaptizedshallbesaved;buthe

thatbelievethnotshallbedamned.

42Andthesesignsshall followthemthatbelieve; Inmynameshalltheycastoutdevils;theyshallspeakwithnewtongues;

43 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink anydeadlything,itshallnothurtthem;theyshalllayhandsonthesick,andtheyshallrecover.

Jesussaidtome,"NotonetimedoesanyNewTestamentwritertell you topray toGodor toMe, theLord JesusChrist, todoanythingaboutthedevil.Everysingletimetheytellyoutodoit.You'retheonewhohasauthority.You'retheonewho'storule."

The next reference He gave me was James 4:7: "Submityourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and hewill fleefromyou."

Now, as Jesus said, you couldn't do that if you didn't haveauthorityoverthedevil.Jamesiswritingtobelievers.

Thisisnotsomethingtobefoolishabout.Onepreachertoldmehehad the devil on the run.He said the troublewas,he wasrunningandthedevilwasafterhim.

Jamessays toresist thedevilandhewill flee. I lookedup theword "flee" to get a clearer knowledge of it. One shade ofmeaning was "to run from as if in terror." The devil will runfromyouinterror.Mostpeoplearerunningfromhiminterror.They're talking about what he's doing and how he's keepingthemsickandunsuccessful.Theygivethedevildominionoverthem. But let's talk about what God's Word says. Let's talkabouttheauthoritywehavebecauseoftheNameofJesus.

Sometimes peoplewonderwhy heaven seems unreal to them.(The devil is trying to blot it out.) Theywonderwhy it seemsthey can't get through. (Thedevil is trying to cut heavenoff.)TheyprayandwonderwhyGodpermittedacertainthing.(Hehasalreadysaidforyoutodosomethingaboutit.)

The fourthScripture isEphesians4:27: "Neithergiveplace tothedevil."Jesusquotedthattome,saying,"Thatsimplymeans,'Don'tletthedevilhaveanyplaceinyou.'"

He said, "That means the devil can't take any place in youunlessyoulethim.Thatmeansyou'vegottheauthority."

SometimesI'llputupwiththingswhenIknowtheyoughtnottobe.FinallyI'llputmyfootdownandtellthedevilhe'sgonefarenough.Itellhimtostop.

GodsaidinHisWordforyoutoresistthedevil.Godistryingtogetustoexercisewhatreallybelongstous.

Andalthoughwedon'thaveauthorityoverhumanspirits, anyChristian can take authority over the evil spirits behind suchharassment.Intheprivacyofyourownhome,youcandealwiththesituationbysaying,"YoufoulspiritthatisoperatingthroughSo-and-so (call their name), embarrassing, intimidating,hurting,deterringtheministryofthischurch,IcommandyoutostopinJesus'Name!"

DemonsintheChurch

One Pentecostal pastor who got some of my tapes on thissubject said three men in his church had been causing himtrouble. All three were born again and filled with the HolySpirit, but anybody can yield to the devil. That doesn't meanyou'reunsavedbecauseyouyieldtohim.

(If itdid, therewouldbenoonesavedtoday!)Butsometimes,when something goes wrong in the church, people begin tooperate in thenatural, thinking,Well, Idon't like that, orThepastorisexercisingtoomuchauthority.Andthenthedevilwillbring other thoughts to their minds, and before long they'redoingthedevil'swork,tryingtounderminethepastor.

Thiswasthecasewiththethreemeninthispastor'schurch.Hehad tried to deal with the problem by bring-ing it before thechurchboardandtalkingtoeachofthemindividually.Thatonlymade it worse. Each of them had friends who were going tofollow them, resulting in three divisions in the church. Thepastor had almost despaired, thinking, / believe III leave. I'mtiredoffightingit.

Intheprocessoftime,Ihadachancetovisitwiththispastor.Hesaid, "Youknowwhat Idid? I listened toyour tape,sittingthereinmystudy.AndIgotuprightinmystudyandsaid,'Youfoul devil. . . Now I command you, spirit, that is operatingthrough . . . .' and I called each of the three men's names,'creatingconfusionanddivisioninthischurch,Icommandyoutostop,intheNameofJesus.'"Hesaid,"Ijustsatbackdownandsaid,'BlessGod,thatsettlesit.'"

Hesaidtome,"BrotherHagin,Iwantyoutoknowthat intendays'time,thissituationstraightenedout.

In fact, those men became the greatest allies I had. The onewhohadcausedthemosttroublesaid,'Idon'tknowwhatintheworldgotintome.Itseemedlikesomekindof influencecameonme.But,thankGod,it'sgone.Iwantyoutoforgiveme.'"

Yousee,somekindofinfluencehadcomeuponhim,andhehad

begun to think certain ways, and before he knew it, he haddecided,"Weneedanewpastor;thisonedoesn'tsuitme."(Thepastor wasn't supposed to suit him anyway. A pastor issupposed to suit the Lord!) I'm well satisfied we have moreauthority than we have used. I believe the Spirit of God issayingwe'reabouttocometoaplacewheremenwilloperateintheSpiritandseeintherealmoftheSpiritmorethantheyhaveinthepast.Therewillbegreatvictories.

Now, I understand that the devil has power; he can do somethings. That's not unscriptural. God led Israel out of Egypt,Aaron threwdownhis rodand thePharaoh'smagicians threwdown their rods, and all of the rods became serpents (Exod.7:11). Those magicians were of the occult. They matchedmiracleformiracleuptoapoint.

ButhereissomethingIlike:Aaron'sserpentswalloweduptherestofthem!Sodon'tbeconcernedwithwhatthedevilmightdo. We can swallow up his works in the Name of Jesus!Hallelujah!

Someyearsago,IreadaboutaPentecostalwomanmissionarywho was ministering in Africa during the '30s. She was leftalone in the mission station for several days because of ashortageofworkers.

Duringthattime,thewitchdoctorofthevillagechallengedher.Hewantedtogetridofher.Hetoldher,"I'lldoabiggermiraclethanyou,andifIdo,youmustleavetown—closethemissiondownandleaveusalone.

But if you do a biggermiracle than I do,we'll all follow yourGod."

She didn't know what to do. Actually, she didn't want to doanything, she was so afraid. She wished that the othermissionarywerethere;hewouldknowwhattodo.

But the little flock who had been saved by their ministryencouragedhertoacceptthechallenge,andshedidn'twanttoletthemdown.Shethought,Lord,whatamIgoingtodo?WhatkindofmiraclecanIdo?

TheymetattheLittlemissionchurch.Thewitchdoctorplacedhimselfflatonthefloor,lyingdown,andenteredintoastateofmeditationduringthenext45minutes.

Suddenlyhebegantoriseoff the floor.Hehungsuspended inthe air, as high as the pulpit, stretched out like a two-by-fourplankwhereeverybodycouldseehim.

Thewomanmissionary thought,DearGod, howam Igoing to

topthat?WhatintheworldamIgoingtodo?
