September is National Suicide Prevention Month. The theme for this year’s observance is BeThere — your action could save a life.

The Department of Defense Suicide Prevention Programs focus on minimizing suicidal behavior by training Service members, leaders, Department of Defense civilians and family members to recognize signs of suicidal behavior, intervention strategies and how to refer individuals for care.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, several risk factors make suicide more likely. They include: having depression or severe anxiety; alcohol or substance abuse; having a serious medical condition or pain; experiencing a highly stressful event such as loss of a loved one, financial trouble or trouble with the law; prolonged stress due to relationship conflicts, harassment or bullying, or unemployment; exposure to another person’s suicide or to graphic accounts of a suicide; and access to lethal means during a time of increased risk.

People who die by suicide usually show some indication of immediate risk before attempting to kill themselves.

A suicide always leaves behind questions to loved ones, family, friends and co-workers. What could I have done to help?

Recognizing warning signs can help save a life. They include talking about wanting to kill themselves, buying a gun or hoarding medicine, talking about a suicide plan, feeling hopeless, feeling trapped in an intolerable situation, feeling humiliated, losing interest in things, becoming socially isolated, acting irritable or agitated, or showing rage.

The loss of any member of the community is a tragedy regardless of the reason and can have a profound impact on overall readiness. Through leadership, education, and respect for each other, we can reduce or eliminate the stigma associated with suicide and help-seeking behaviors.

Ensuring prompt access to quality health care is an essential component to the approach to suicide prevention.

Remember the acronym ACE

A - Ask the person if he/she is thinking about suicide

C - Care for that individual by expressing concern about him/her

E - Escort them to a behavioral health clinic or hospital emergency room for evaluation and intervention

Do not leave that person alone!

Intervention may also include the use of more advanced skills by trained personnel such as an be chaplains, family advocacy program workers and

medical providers, whose primary duties involve assisting people who are more susceptible to suicidal ideation.

According to Chaplain (Lt. Col.), Peter O. Ferris, USAG Stuttgart Deputy Command Chaplain, Chaplains are often the first place people go when life doesn’t make sense.  This is especially true where the Chaplain Corps has historically been about the “care of souls”, which carries over in the three core competencies of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps to Nurture the Living, Care for the Wounded, and Honor the Fallen.

“The Community needs to know this is an all hands effort, which is why training facilitators and gatekeepers are not limited to the Chaplain Corps,” said Ferris.

“To borrow an old saying, ‘everyone is a safety officer’ in terms of getting

Service members, family members, and authorized DOD civilians the help they need.”

Suicide Awareness training is held during the monthly-required annual training (RAT) at Patch Theater every month, and other venues by request based on availability by Chaplains.

September is recognized as National Preparedness Month which serves as a reminder that we all must take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect us where you live, work, and travel.

Disaster PlanningDisaster can strike quickly and

without warning. Families can and do cope with disaster by preparing in advance and working together as a team. Knowing what to do is your best protection and your responsibility. Learn more about Family Disaster Plans by contacting USAG Stuttgart Emergency Management office at DSN 431-2031 or Civ. 07031-15- 2031 or the American Red Cross at 07031-15-2812.

Four Steps to SafetyThere are four basic steps to

developing a family disaster plan:

1. Find out what could happen to you. By learning what your

risks may be, you can prepare for the disaster most likely to occur in your area. Ask the following: •What type of disasters are

most likely to happen in your community?

•How should you prepare for each? •Does your community have a

public warning system? •What about animal care after

disaster? •If you care for elderly or disabled

persons, how can you help them? •What are the disaster plans at your

workplace, your children’s school or day care center, and other places where members of your family spend time?

2. Create a Family Disaster Plan. Once you know what disasters

are possible in your area, talk about how to prepare and how to respond. Make checklists of steps you can take with your family. Here is how to create your Family Disaster Plan: •Meet with your family and discuss

why you need to prepare for disaster.

•Discuss the types of disasters that are most likely to happen. Explain what to do in each case.

•Pick two places to meet: •Right outside of your home in case

of a sudden emergency, like a fire.•Outside of your neighborhood

in case you can’t return home. Everyone must know the address

and phone number of the meeting locations.

•Develop an emergency communication plan. In case family members are separated from one another, have a plan for getting back together.

•Ask an outside contact, relative or friend to be your “family contact.” Your contact should live outside of your area. Everyone must know the contact’s name, address, and phone number.

•Discuss what to do if authorities ask you to evacuate. Make arrangements for a place to stay and/or learn about shelter locations.

•Be familiar with escape routes. Plan several escape routes in case certain roads are blocked or closed. Remember to follow the advice of local officials during evacuation situations. They will direct you to the safest route.

•Plan how to take care of your pets.

3. Complete your checklists. Include the following items on

your checklists:•Emergency telephone numbers

(fire, police, ambulance, etc.). You may not have time in an emergency to look up critical numbers 112 or the MP desk at DSN: 430-5262/ civ.0711-680-5262.

•Teach all responsible family members how and when to turn off the water, gas, and electricity at

the main switches or valves. •Check if you have adequate

insurance coverage. •Install smoke alarms on each level

of your home, especially near bedrooms.

•Get training from the fire department on how to use your fire extinguisher (A-B-C type), and show family members where extinguishers are kept.

•Conduct a home hazard hunt. During a disaster, ordinary objects in your home can cause injury or damage. Anything that can move, fall, break, or cause a fire is a home hazard. Look for electrical, chemical, and fire hazards. Inspect your home at least once a year and fix potential hazards.

•Stock emergency supplies and assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit.

•Keep a smaller Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk of your car.

•Keep a portable, battery-operated radio or television and extra batteries.

•Take a Red Cross first aid and CPR class on Panzer Kaserne.

•Find the safe places in your home for each type of disaster.

•Make two photocopies of vital documents and keep the originals in a safe deposit box. Keep one copy in a safe place in the house, and give the second copy to an out-of-town friend or relative.

•Take inventory of your home, garage, and surrounding property.

4. Practice and maintain your plan. •Quiz your kids every six months

so they remember what to do, meet-ing places, phone numbers, and safety rules.

•Conduct fire and emergency evacua-tion drills at least twice a year.

•Replace stored food and water every six months.

•Use the test button to test your smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries at least once a year. Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years.

•Ensure your fire extinguisher is properly charged. Use the gauge or test button to check proper pressure.

What to tell children•Tell children that a disaster is some-

thing that happens that could hurt people, cause damage, or cut off utilities such as water, telephones, or electricity but there are many people who can help them.

•Give examples of several disasters that could happen in your commu-nity and help them recognize the warning signs.

•Teach children how and when to call for help, and who to call in case they are separated from the family in an emergency.

•Explain that when people know what to do and practice in advance, everyone is better able to handle emergencies.

•Have older children take a first aid and CPR course too.

Plan how to take care of your pets • If you must evacuate, it is best to take

your pets with you. However, pets (other than service animals) may not be permitted in public shelters.

•Contact hotels outside of your imme-diate area to check their pet policies.

•Ask friends, relatives, or others if they could shelter your animals.

•Prepare a list of boarding facili-ties and veterinarians who could shelter animals; include 24-hour phone numbers. Keep the list of “pet friendly” places and phone numbers with your disaster information and supplies.

•Carry pets in a sturdy carrier and have identification, collar, leash, and proof of with your portable pet disas-ter supplies kit. Have a current photo of your pets in case they get lost.

•As a last resort, if you absolutely must leave your pets behind, pre-pare an emergency pen in the home that includes a three-day supply of dry food and a large con-tainer of fresh water.

Assembling the supplies you might need following a disaster is an important part of your Family Disaster Plan.

Involve Children in Disaster Preparedness.

Ask children to help you remember to keep your kits in working order. Children might make calendars or posters with the appropriate dates marked on them. © 2016Summit EntertainmentThe Wild Life — On a tiny exotic island, Tuesday, an outgoing parrot lives with his quirky animal friends in paradise. However, Tuesday can’t stop dream-ing about discovering the world. After a violent storm, Tuesday and his friends wake up to find a strange creature on the beach: Robinson Crusoe. Tuesday immediately views Crusoe as his ticket off the island to explore new lands. Likewise, Crusoe soon realizes that the key to surviving on the island is through the help of Tuesday and the other animals. It isn’t always easy at first, as the animals don’t speak “human.” Slowly but surely, they all start living together in harmony, until one day, when their comfortable life is overturned by two savage cats, who wish to take control of the island. A battle ensues between the cats and the group of friends but Crusoe and the animals soon discover the true power of friendship up against all odds (even savage cats).

Story by Staff Sgt. Marcus FichtlU.S. Special Operations Command Europe

TBLISI, Georgia – U.S. special forces Soldiers and forces from the State Security Services of Georgia participated in exercise Jackal Stone 2016, here during the first two weeks of August.

The exercise was designed to stress and build interoperability between U.S. and Georgian counter terrorism forces and interagency partners while pro-viding mission command nodes the opportunity to exercise their systems. The exercise challenged the partici-pants with counter terrorism scenarios

at both the tactical and operational lev-el throughout the country of Georgia.

“This is an exercise that is simu-lating our response to a terrorist case in a foreign country,” said Nicholas Berliner, chargé d’affaires, U.S. Embassy in Georgia. “The exercise en-hances our ability to respond jointly to international security challenges.”

Special operations forces under Special Operations Command Europe and mission command elements of U.S. European Command along with their Georgian counterparts were the primary participants in Jackal Stone 16. They worked together on the ground through field missions and at

the operational and strategic level via computer simulation.

“The Georgian forces, their plan-ners, their commanders and their Soldiers have shown nothing but trust and loyalty throughout the entire pro-cess,” said Maj. Ned Marsh, exercise planner, SOCEUR. “It has been an ex-ercise of hard work and commitment.”

Jackal Stone 16 allowed Georgia to build up its own in-ternal systems and capabilities.  “It was very important to see how the U.S. agencies cooperated, how a order comes from the top and then is executed at the lowest level” said Irakli Chimakadze, director Georgian

Counter Terrorism Center. “We will definitely emulate the U.S. plan-ning and execution if a future crisis emerges.”

A culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and even more years of American and Georgian friendship, Jackal Stone strengthened the ties and capabilities of both partner nations. “Jackal Stone 2016 was a year in plan-ning, it involved hundreds of people and a very substantial commitment of both time and resources, but we feel it was a very good choice to do it here in Georgia and feel confident that this will be very beneficial to all con-cerned,” said Berliner.

Story by Staff Sgt. Elizabeth TarrU.S. Army Europe

YAVORIV, Ukraine - What do you do after someone gives you five field lit-ter ambulances? If you’re the Ukrainian armed forces you prepare to receive some of the best training on how to properly use these life-saving devices.

Soldiers assigned to 557th Area Support Medical Company, 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 30th Medical Brigade out of Germany ar-rived at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center here Aug. 29 to conduct a site survey. This will allow them to effectively and efficiently train 19 Ukrainian students, Sept. 5-Sept. 16, on the logistics of the FLA .

The ambulances, which are part of the train-and-equip program with Ukraine, were officially handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces by Lt. Gen Ben Hodges, commander of U.S. Army Europe Aug. 27.

The two-week course will con-sist of detailed training that will teach the medical students, who recently graduated from the inaugural Ukraine Medical Curriculum Program, how to properly maintain the FLA. There will also be a driver’s training course that will familiarize students with the

vehicle, and hands-on medical training to acquaint the students with the medi-cal equipment.

The driver’s training portion of the course will incorporate scenarios with simulated casualties so the students re-ceive hands-on training with the FLA to ensure they are knowledgeable about the vehicle and are capable of using the medical equipment.

“They have never worked with FLA’s before and it’s important for them to be proficient,” said Sgt. Esther Yu, a medic assigned to 557th ASMC. “We are showing them how we would treat patients and what equipment we would use in different scenarios.”

Yu will be one of the instructors for the training and this is her first oppor-tunity to train students on the vehicle, but she isn’t too worried about the ob-stacles that lie ahead.

“I know they recently graduated from the course and will be able to pick up the information really quickly,” said Yu. “I’m not too worried about them being unfamiliar with how we teach and learning the tasks to standard.”

These vehicles provide mobility for emergency situations and provide a quick link between battlefield casual-ties and emergency services not avail-able on the front lines of battle. It has

the capacity for four litter or six am-bulatory patients in a fully insulated compartment with a heating and A/C system.

The FLA training is one more example of developing trust by con-sistent military-to-military working relationships. JMTG-U is part of the

train-and-equip program. Their pri-mary focus is on direct training in the near term while helping the Ukrainian armed forces to build a sustainable and enduring combat training center at the IPSC. This training is one more exam-ple of how the U.S. is helping to build Ukraine’s capacity for self-defense.

Soldiers with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 554th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, were selected by their respective platoons to participate in the fourth annual “Clifton Challenge,” Sept. 1 on Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen. The day was packed with physical and mental activities such as land navigation and obstacle courses, an assault rifle stress shoot, an eight-mile ruck march and a team board.

The challenge is dedicated to a fellow fallen comrade, Cpl. Karen Clifton, 22, who was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, June 21, 2007. The unit’s building, 2914 on Panzer Kaserne, also was renamed Clifton Hall in 2008.

Following the 554th MP Company 1st Sgt. SG Adam Lashley’s introduction, the Company Commander, Capt. Daniel Jimenez, welcomed the group reading a letter from a child received in a care package thanking the Soldiers for their dedicated service. Jimenez reminded Soldiers of the important values Clifton defended when making the ultimate sacrifice: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, democracy and freedom.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey A. Searl, commanding officer of the 709th MP Battalion also addressed and thanked competitors, “I believe with every fiber of my being that we are here to honor

those that have gone before us. What we’re here to do now is to train and increase readiness. As we go through the day, let us not lose what the true meaning of the Clifton Challenge is.”

“Less than 1 percent of American sons and daughters today, raise their right hand like each of you did,” Searl said.

In order to provide a safe yet

challenging event, maneuver schemes were planned in three phases: preparation, execution and recovery for each challenge.

The Army Physical Fitness Test assessed the Soldiers ability to perform physically with the added challenge of wearing Army Combat Uniforms (ACU’s) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN)

masks. The test kicked off in the early morning at 4:45 a.m. before heading to the track at Stuttgart High School for a two-mile run and timed push-ups and sit-ups wearing masks.

The land navigation course competition began adjacent to the Local Training Area in Böblingen. Following a safety briefing, maps were issued and the clock started with a 90-minute countdown. Soldiers had to successfully attain the first five of 10 points. Scores were assessed by the total number completed within the time period.

The day continued with an obstacle course on the LTA. Competitors negotiated selected obstacles to achieve proficiency in moving over, under and around objects. Soldiers were evaluated on their ability to successfully navigate each obstacle, as well as the time it took to complete the course.

Soldiers then moved to the Panzer Range Complex for a stress shoot, evaluating their marksmanship skills under physical and mental stress. During the challenge, competitors had to identify enemy shooters, secure barriers, conduct safety briefings and proper range operations, all while maintaining accountability of the ammunition, and dunnage.

The stress shoot began with a few minutes of physical activity: flutter kicks, half-jacks and burpees, to get their blood flowing. As a team, they moved to the range to locate their

weapons and engage their target. Soldiers had 45 seconds to fire 20 rounds, receiving points for hitting their specified target.

The challenge concluded with an eight-mile ruck march to evaluate the Soldiers ability to move wearing combat personal protective equipment and a 35 pound rucksack in a three person fire team. The goal: complete the march in less than two hours.

Upon returning to the company headquarters on Panzer Kaserne, each platoon attended a board to test their knowledge of the challenges namesake and history of the 554th MP Company.

By the end of the day, competitors were exhausted, but felt good about the hard work they had accomplished together in honor of their fallen comrade.

“Blood, sweat and tears for Cpl. Clifton,” said Spc. Tymire Lewis of the 3rd Platoon.

“What I saw here today was not only you fighting for each other, but you cheering the rest of your teammates on too which is what the Army is all about,” said Lashley of the 554th MP Company.

With much anticipation and the smell of the celebratory barbeque floating through the air, Jimenez, 554th company commander, announced the 2nd Platoon as the overall winner of the 2016 Clifton Challenge.

By U.S. Army Europe

As you travel around Europe, you are likely to see some increases in host nation security efforts, as well as in U.S. Army Europe’s garrison security posture.

U.S. Army Europe’s Antiterrorism Division would like to remind every-one that the command’s common goal is to ensure it is postured to counter the threat of terrorism and provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.

You may see additional security guards, Soldiers and military police in and around U.S. Army Europe instal-lations, more frequent and thorough security checks and inspections, and other random security activities. It is the collective efforts of security profes-sionals, Soldiers, civilian workers and family members who help keep every-one safe.

Given the significant and persis-tent threat the world faces, one way to execute the protection mission is to take advantage of the newest

security-related technologies. Fielding new equipment with advanced tech-nology enhances the ability to detect dangerous materials and improves the quality of searches at access control points and security checkpoints.

Some of these technologies are now available at Army Europe installations.

U.S. Army Europe is employing new equipment with advanced detec-tion capability at installations through-out the region according to a force protection specialist in U.S. Army Europe’s Antiterrorism Division.

Coupled with expanded measures designed to reduce the terrorist threat, U.S. Army Europe’s security profes-sionals are working closely with host nation partners to maintain a robust deterrence and response capability, the force protection specialist explained.

“As we implement these new tech-nologies, visitors to installations may experience delays or other inconve-niences when accessing our facilities,” the force protection specialist said. “However, we anticipate these delays

will be minimal, and short-term as we adjust our procedures.”

The Antiterrorism Division recom-mends everyone consider building addi-tional time into travel schedules to alle-viate the possible effects of those delays.

Security starts with everyone’s in-volvement, such as remaining vigi-lant, reporting suspicious activity and making prudent personal decisions. Today’s operating environment has changed and we must change with it — fielding new technology and adapting our security procedures are just one aspect of keeping our personnel and communities safe.

“Anyone stationed in Europe is encourage to follow U.S. Army Europe’s Antiterrorism Division on Facebook and Twitter,” the force pro-tection specialist said. “Army Europe’s Antiterrorism Division regularly posts information on upcoming protests and demonstrations so people can avoid the area, and we share other relevant information and resources for keeping you and your family safe while living

and traveling abroad.”Information, resources and

information on current travel restrictions are posted on the Travel Safe microsite, available at http://www.eur.army.mil/travelsafe/. The Antiterrorism Division’s Facebook page is available at https://www.facebook.com/StaySafeAntiterrorism/, and they tweet at https://twitter.com/staysafeeurope.

The Antiterrorism Division reminds everyone to make sure they know the procedures for reporting suspicious activities or behavior to the proper authorities. Use the iReport website, http://www.eur.army.mil/iReport/, or mobile app to submit information to counterintelligence or law enforcement officials.

All personnel are also reminded that registering any travel away from their duty station with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, is now required. More information is available at https://step.state.gov/step/.

An avid golfer at the Stuttgart Golf Course in Kornwestheim, this was the first time Forsberg tested her skills at the All-Army Sports level. Forsberg earned one of three spots on the women’s All-Army Golf Team during the All-Army Golf Trials held Aug. 15-18 at the Fort Jackson Golf Club in South Carolina. Following the trials, the team continued on to play against Air Force, Navy, and Marines in the 2016 Armed Forces Golf Championships, Aug. 20-23.

During the championship tournament, Forsberg shot the lowest round 78 on the final day and birdied the last hole to force a sudden death playoff between the Army and Air Force. The Army women beat the Air Force team in the first playoff hole after defeating all other military service branches in a historic win for the Army.

Sembach, Germany - On Oct. 1, the USAREUR Registry of Motor Vehicles is increasing the vehicle registration fee in Germany by $5 to $35 dollars. Driver license fees are also go-ing up to $20.

Licensing fees were last in-creased in 1986 and the reg-istration fee was raised to $30 in 2006 to fund the change to German license plates.

The increase is necessary because the costs for person-nel, supplies, data processing and equipment have continually grown over the years.

The registry is a supplemen-tary mission non-appropriated fund entity based in Sembach, Germany. The fund does not generate profits but must re-cover operational costs and maintain fund solvency. The fund has sustained losses for the past three years and can no longer absorb the losses without increasing fees.

Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival “Kürbisausstellung im Blühenden Barock“

DATES & TIMES: Sept. 2 to Nov. 6, 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.LOCATION: Ludwigsburg Palace Gardens, or Blühendes Barock

e pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg is the largest of its kind worldwide. is year’s creations and exhibit will be themed to transform the Ludwigsburg Palace gardens into a very peculiar circus ring. More than 450,000 pumpkins of over 600 dif-ferent varieties will be artistically ar-ranged in the shape of clowns, knife throwers, wild animals and other cir-censian attractions.

Pumpkin-based foods and drinks are another much appreciated part of this event, and food creations are just as unusual as the artwork. is is the only place where you can savor not just pumpkin soup, stew, and pie, but also “Maultaschen,” spaghetti, burg-ers, strudel, candy, and even sparkling wine, all made of pumpkin.

From Sept. 15 to Sept. 18, the popular U.S. pumpkin carver Ray Villafane and his team will be special guests in Ludwigsburg for the 4th time. Villafane’s amazing pumpkin sculp-tures aim at visualizing the history of the Hubbard squash.

Another highlight in the vast pro-gram of side events is the paddling competition among athletes using

Stuttgart Beer Festival “Cannstatter Volksfest”DATES: Sept. 23 – Oct. 9TIMES: Mondays – ursdays, noon – 11 p.m.Fridays, noon – midnightSaturdays, 11 a.m. – midnightSundays, 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.Special opening hours:Friday, Sept. 23, 3 p.m. – midnight.Historical Parade:Sunday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.LOCATION: Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart-Bad CannstattMercedesstraße 50, 70372 Stuttgart

e Cannstatter Volksfest, locally called “Wasen” from the name of its fest grounds in the district of Bad Cannstatt, is Stuttgart’s oldest and most famous festival. It combines a beer fes-tival of nine tents and an “alpine vil-lage”, the largest travelling funfair in Europe, as well as a “peddler market” with old-style German merchandise. Wednesdays are “family days” with reduced prices for rides, food and parking throughout the fest. For more information see http://cannstatter-volksfest.de/en/service/families/.

e Cannstatter Volksfest has be-come the second largest beer festival worldwide by building upon a long, deep-felt history. It was founded by King William I in 1818 to celebrate the rst good harvest a er three years of famine due to poor crops and a long war. For this reason, the fest symbol is a huge maypole surmounted by a cornucopia of nature’s products – the so-called “fruit column” that towers near the informa-tion stand in the beer tents’ area.

History lives on especially at the rst fest weekend in the “traditional morning” on the rst Saturday - featuring traditional brass music and songs around the “fruit column” at 11 a.m. – as well as in the impressive historical parade through the streets of Bad Cannstatt on the rst Sunday. Around 100 groups participate in the parade organized by the Cannstatter Volksfest Club beginning at 11 a.m. e club includes over 20,000 U.S. members, who usually send a delegation to this event. For parade route and further details, check http://cannstatter-volksfest.de/en/volksfest/festival-parade/.

Access to the fest grounds and tents is free of charge. However, if you are looking for a signature celebration with roast chicken and beer mugs, side by side with visitors from all over the world, a little planning is required. Weekends and evenings are generally booked out months in advance by groups of friends and local companies who organize team-building outings to

the fest. Available seats can still be found at lunchtime, on Wednesdays, and on Sunday evenings. For hard-core party goers, some tents also o er bracelets that grant entrance without seats. Due to heightened public safety concerns, security checks at tent gates and removal of rowdy patrons are strictly enforced. A fest layout and links to the tents’ booking websites is available at http://cannstatter-volksfest.de/en/tents/.

Detailed, o cial information on history, facts, schedules, locations, on-site services, as well as a search engine to plan your trip with public transport are available in English at http://cannstatter-volksfest.de/en/

With Munich’s Oktoberfest and Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Volksfest both beginning this month, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to wear. Why not do as the locals do and don the traditional dress, or “Tracht,” consisting of a “Dirndl” for women and “Lederhosen,” or leather breeches for men.

e word Tracht is a form of the Old High German word for “wearing,” according to Olaf Schulze, chairman of the Pro Alt Cannstatt Association and historian.

While many people typically wear Tracht in Munich during Oktoberfest, the trend to dress up for the Cannsttater Volksfest has grown in popularity over the last ve years.

Fact is that traditional dresses were and still are worn throughout various regions in Germany, as well as Austria and Switzerland. Every country or region features various designs embedded in history, tradition and local customs, according to Schulze.

It was in 1818 when the Volksfest, or people’s fest, was held for the rst time at the Cannstatter Wasen fest grounds. Following a three-year period of bad harvesting, King Wilhelm I of Württemberg hosted the event as an agricultural fest for his subjects.

Back then, it was common to visit the fest in the traditional dress of the various regions of Württemberg. As for Cannstatt, that mainly meant farmers and vintners who either wore their everyday wear (“Alltagsstatt”), or “Sonntagsstaat,” meaning a more festive interpretation of the traditional dress, Schulze said.

Back then, the traditional out t consisted of leather knee breeches, mainly for shermen and tanners, or woolen shorts for vintners and farmers. Depending on the region, the short breeches also were designed to protect against heat, water and cold.

e Dirndl mainly served as working garments for servants and farmer’s wives. It was a simple garment typically made of coarse cotton. e Dirndl was also worn by the lady of the house – with a slight di erence – her dress was made of ner materials, such as linen or lace.

e basics, however, remained the same: the Dirndl consisted of the bodice, blouse, skirt and apron,

according to Schulze.Today’s tradition of wearing Dirndl

and Lederhosen mainly to fests and special occasions changed its historic context, since it was originally intended for everyday life and work, according to Schulze.

Dominik Henne, managing director of Krüger Dirndl, one of Württemberg’s largest traditional dress out tters, can relate.

“Today’s Dirndl and Lederhose can be considered a fashionable out t borrowing from tradition,” Henne said.

“People are very exible in their personal taste and ways to wear their Dirndl and Lederhosen,” he added.

Dirndl basicsTypically, the skirt starts at the waist. e traditional skirt is full and long. However, women can choose between various lengths pending fashion and personal taste, according to Henne.

e bodice is usually separate but also can be sewn to the skirt. It comes in various styles: high or low, round or square necklines, embroidered with ornaments or decorative ru es and lace. Typically, it’s fastened with ribbons, buttons or hooks.

e blouse is short, usually ending above the waist. In most cases, the sleeves are short and pu ed. e blouse can be worn on or o the shoulder depending on one’s taste.

e apron, formerly worn to protect the skirt, is now a decorative accessory, according to Henne. ey come in all colors, styles and fabrics: linen, cotton, silk and lace.

According to Henne, the apron

color should always compliment the respective Dirndl, or make a fashionable contrast. Typically, aprons are sold with the Dirndl out t, but can also be bought separately for mixing and matching.

“When it comes to colors, red, pink and blue can be considered a classic,” Henne said.

Trends also consists of oral prints and patterns, as well as corresponding hats to go with the Dirndl. e hats are decorated with rhinestones and feathers. Lederhosen or heart–shaped handbags, as well as colorful satin ribbon necklaces with pendants in various shapes – hearts, pretzels or deer antlers – also are a favored accessory. If the weather gets cold, cardigans can also be worn with any Dirndl, Henne said.

As for tights, nylons or cotton tights work. For fashionistas, high heels or ballet slippers make for a trendy appearance.

Lederhosen basicsAs for Lederhosen, the length varies between above or below the knee. e pants are mainly made of goat or deerskin, the latter being the pricier version. e embroidery varies between green, beige or red. e fashion conscious may prefer the latest trend: breeches made of treated leather that mimics decades of wear.

Leather suspenders with a chest strap are a traditional accessory, as are woolen hunter’s hats in gray, black or green with boar bristle tassels, feathers and pins.

e checkered shirt comes in various colors, such as red, blue, green, orange, pink or brown.

e current trend features white shirts with collars turned up and the top three buttons le open. e shirts feature the traditional checkered fabric on the elbows and inside the collars. Prints and embroidery applications are also popular, according to Henne.

As for shoes, Henne recommends the traditional “Haferlschuh,” a robust leather shoe with a heavily treaded sole traditionally worn by workers in the Alpine regions. e shoes are worn with cotton or woolen socks or calf warmers.

A “Janker” jacket, or woolen vest, can also be worn with any Lederhosen out t.

Dirndl:It’s recommended to take the entire

ensemble to a dry cleaner. If washing by machine, ensure all ribbons, hooks and accessories are removed. For best results put the blouse, bodice, skirt and apron in a laundry washing bag and use the delicate or hand wash cycle.

Lederhosen:To preserve and protect your

new Lederhosen, treat them with waterproo ng spray before ever wearing them.

Lederhosen should never be dry cleaned or laundered. Experts recommend brushing the leather with a so brush. If you must, spot cleaning with baby shampoo is recommended. Use a wet cloth – warm water – with a small amount of baby shampoo and lightly dab.

A er each wearing, especially a er being in a smoked- lled tent, make sure to properly air your breeches. Hang them outside in a protected area, so the fresh air can do its magic. Stay away from Febreeze.

How to tie your apron: Women… it’s all about the bow

• Tying the apron on your right side signals that one’s taken – either married or in a serious relationship.• Tying the apron on your left side signals that you are unencumbered.• If the bow is tied at the back, this means the wearer is a widow.• If you’re an “innocent” girl, tie the bow in front, centered.
