Stop. Take a listen. You hear it everywhere. The double beat. The one-two cadence

that propels us all from deep within. Thump-thump. Goes the heart. The boxer throws

the powerful one-two; boxing’s most feared combination. Two quick claps of the

hands and dancers prepare for perfection. Snap your fi ngers two times and watch as

everyone around gets ready to move. Why do rock legends tap the microphone twice

before melting your face? What makes a thoroughbred’s muscles respond to two

clicks from a jockey’s mouth? This is no mere coincidence. The double beat lives on

a deeper level. An emotional level. It’s a universal tribal-like connection. It’s

everywhere. And we’ve followed it for over 40 years. Always building on it. It’s

what drove us to make the MX-5 Miata, the best-selling roadster of all

time. The MAZDASPEED3, one of the fastest front-wheel-drive

cars on the planet. And the CX-9, 2008 North American

6 FAMOUS SEPTEMBER 2008

If you sat down to write a character specifically for Brad Pitt, wouldthat character be an idiot? A goof? A dork? A doofus?

Maybe it would. If we’re honest, maybe we’d all like to take one of the world’s most beautifulpeople down a notch on the coolness meter. But alas, most of us don’t have that power. We have towait for a couple of filmmakers like the Coen Brothers to come along and fulfil our wishes (andapparently theirs).

Writing and directing sibs Joel and Ethan Coen say the idea for their new movie, the off-kilter capercomedy Burn After Reading, evolved from the characters up. They decided to write parts for a handfulof actors with whom they wanted to work and then those characters led to the story of a fired CIAagent whose memoirs fall into the hands of a couple of scheming gym employees. Hilarity ensues.

They wrote roles for George Clooney, Richard Jenkins and Frances McDormand, all of whomthey’d worked with before. And then they wrote one for someone they’d always wanted to workwith, Brad Pitt.

People magazine’s two-time Sexiest Man Alive (1995, 2000) quickly agreed to the role, but was a bittaken aback by the character, one of those bonehead gym employees. The film’s production notesquote Pitt: “I didn’t think the guy would be a dumbbell, a gum-chewing, Gatorade-swilling, iPod-addicted bubble-brain. I said to Joel and Ethan, ‘He’s such an idiot.’”

Tee hee hee. Surprisingly, this is Pitt’s first out-and-out goofball. I spent quite a while going over his filmoraphy;

I was sure I’d seen him play a dolt before, but must have been thinking of one of his alter egos fromthe Ocean’s movies, or maybe his jittery kook from Twelve Monkeys — but that character (whichearned Pitt an Oscar nomination) was certainly no idiot.

Nope, this is Pitt’s first true knucklehead. And, apparently, it wasn’t easy to turn this piece of beefcake into a meathead. Short of CGI, the

crew used all of the tools at their disposal — gym shorts, crew socks, big white sneakers and thatspiky hairdo with the big blond streak. The last hunky actor the Coen Brothers gave a bad hairdo wasJavier Bardem in last year’s No Country for Old Men. And that haircut deserves at least some of thecredit for Bardem’s Best Actor Oscar. Just saying.

In “What a Goof,” page 38, the Coens, Clooney and Pitt discuss their star-studded caper comedy.James Franco goes from starring in last month’s pot comedy Pineapple Express to a small role in this

month’s Richard Gere romance Nights in Rodanthe. Why? Franco explains in “High on Drama,” page 36.And on page 15 you’ll find our Fall-Holiday Movie Preview, a handy guide packed with pictures

and info on the must-see movies from now until New Year’s.//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

INBRIEF

onsidering ittook less thanfive years tomake the first9/11 movie, it’ssurprising that

there has yet to be a feature filmabout Princess Diana. TV movies, sure. Documentaries? Enough tofill a 24-hour specialty channel. But never a big Hollywood movie.

Yes, any Diana bio-pic would betouchy stuff in the U.K., where the royal family’s power andinfluence cast a large shadow. But after the success of 2006’sThe Queen it seemed like the timewas right. In May 2007 there werereports of a bidding war over thefilm rights to the book Diana andthe Paparazzi, with Paramountapparently interested, and Keira Knightley the actor they

were trying to woo for the lead. But since then, nothing. As far

as we can tell the production is inlimbo and Knightley has acceptedno such role. Unless you counther part in The Duchess.

Knightley plays youngGeorgiana Spencer, the Duchessof Devonshire, a notorious 18th-century socialite, a powerfulpolitical figure and, it just sohappens, a distant relative ofDiana Spencer, Princess of Wales.

And the filmmakers have beenanything but shy about playingup the similarities between thedistant relations.

The plot synopsis reads, “Likeher direct ancestor Princess Diana,[Georgiana] was ravishing, glamorous and adored by anentire country.... But even as herpower and popularity grew, she

was haunted by the fact that theonly man in England sheseemingly could not seduce washer very own husband, the Duke.”

Ralph Fiennes plays the Duke, who had a long-standing affairwith Georgiana’s friend, LadyElizabeth Foster, and married herwhen Georgiana died in 1806.Georgiana also had an affair, butwith an Earl, not her riding coach.

The trailer, too, evokes Diana, specifically her influenceon the fashion world, asthe Duchess is introducedto a crowd with, “What wesee her wearing tonight, Ilook forward to seeingthe rest of you wearingtomorrow. The empressof fashion herself, theDuchess of Devonshire.”

BRUCEMCDONALDUSES VIOLENT LANGUAGE

ruce McDonald swears there’s nothing specific he andwriter Tony Burgess were getting at with Pontypool, their movie in which a virus travels through the Englishlanguage infecting its victims in weird and violent ways.

“It’s not French, it’s not Armenian, so the people whospeak French have a slight advantage over the people

who can only speak English,” explains McDonald, director of suchfilms as Hard Core Logo and The Tracey Fragments. He’s in a café acrossthe street from his home in Toronto’s Little Italy. “What I’ve alwaysloved about the idea of it is that it is quite ripe for interpretations. There’s a lot of decoding to be done.”

But don’t call the infected people zombies. For one thing, they’renot undead. “We ended up calling them conversationalists,” saysMcDonald. “This language virus effects their behaviour in reallystrange ways. They basically end up trying to chew their waythrough the mouth of another person to escape their condition. And

the early stages are quite odd, where they repeat things and thenthey get confused and mixed up, and they can’t express themselves.”

Based on Burgess’ novel Pontypool Changes Everything, the movietakes place in a talk-radio station in the real town of Pontypool, Ont.But since the whole movie happens inside, it was shot in Toronto.

“It’s all interior,” says McDonald. “That was the big challengebecause people get really nervous about being in one place for toolong. But it’s been done many times before. We were inspired by thesuccess of Das Boot and 12 Angry Men and My Dinner with Andre.”

Shot for just over $1-million (100 percent privately funded), filmingended in June, and by July Pontypool had earned a spot at this month’sToronto International Film Festival. “Yeah, we were very thrilled. We’re working like maniacs,” McDonald says of post-production.“It’s tight, but it’s nice to have a finish line to go for.”////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

ngelina Jolie makesher second moviein two years based on a real-lifekidnapping. But

unlike A Mighty Heart — thestory of Mariane Pearl, wifeof kidnapped and murderedjournalist Daniel Pearl —this plot wasn’t snatchedfrom the headlines, butrather some dusty, long-forgotten documents.

Jolie plays ChristineCollins, a Depression-erasingle mother whose son,Walter, went missing in Los Angeles in 1928.

After five months, thepolice — who were undergreat public pressure to findthe boy — located Walter inIllinois and returned him tohis mom. Only it wasn’tWalter. But when Collinsprotested, she was thrownin a psychiatric institution.Admitting that they had thewrong boy would have beentoo embarrassing for theLAPD. However, Collinscontinued her fight, eventually bringing thecase to L.A.’s City Council.

The 80-year-old storycame to light afterscreenwriter J. MichaelStraczynski, also a journalistwho has written for the L.A. Times, was sent somefiles by a source who wasin charge of burning old City Hall documents.Fortunately, that sourcethought this particular casewas far too interesting to goup in smoke. INTERVIEW JAMES FRANCO

Just whenyou think you’ve gotJames Franco figured out, he goes and con-founds your expectations.

For the few who caught the cult sitcomFreaks and Geeks, the first impression of thePalo Alto, California-born actor was as theunderachieving metalhead Daniel Desario.

Quickly, though, the starring role in aJames Dean TV movie and high-profile workas the tormented Harry Osborn in the threeSpider-Man movies transformed Franco intoHollywood’s poster boy for youthful angst. His choice of smaller, artier projects addedto the ultra-dramatic image.

Then last month, funny Franco came roar-ing back as perhaps the sweetest stupid potpusher ever put on screen in co-star (and oldF&G pal) Seth Rogen’s ultimate stoner comedyPineapple Express, which was directed by in-die icon David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls).

“The character is kind of silly,” the actorunderstates about the heavily improvised

role, “but I certainly made a bigger ass ofmyself than what ended up on the screen! So it was good I could trust David to not putall the unfunny stuff in there.”

So what does Franco do next? Um, takesa supporting role in a schmaltzy romance,Nights in Rodanthe.

“I have a pretty small part in it,” admitsFranco, 30, during a call from the UCLAcampus where he’s finishing up a degree.Franco plays the estranged son of a doctor(Richard Gere) who falls in love with a con-fused married woman (Diane Lane) whilethey’re stormbound at an old inn on theNorth Carolina coast. Adapted from a novelby The Notebook’s Nicholas Sparks, it’s along way from the cooler projects Francohas been involved with of late.

But he had a good reason for doing it. “It was an opportunity to work with

George C. Wolfe,” says Franco. “He’s theNew York theatre director who won a Tony

for Angels in America. He’s always up forTonys, incredible director.”

Strangely, Franco hooked up with thehighbrow director through one of hisPineapple Express co-stars. “Rosie Perezwas in Pineapple and she’s really goodfriends with George, they’ve done somethings together,” Franco says. “And shesaid, ‘Hey, my friend George really wantsyou to do this part in his first movie.’ So Ijust jumped at that opportunity.”

If Franco seems to be on the receivingend of good Hollywood mojo, rest assuredthese things haven’t always come easily.

“I had to really learn how to let go of amovie once I was done with my work,”says Franco. “It’s a difficult thing to put somuch time into a role, so much research, shoot for months, then have it come outnot like you expected. One thing that’shelped is doing smaller films or having asmaller part. I don’t have a large role inRodanthe, like the case with The Dead Girland American Crime and In the Valley of Elah.If those films don’t make any money, I’mfine, because I’m happy to be a part of themand I think that they’re special films.”

Franco also copes with the ups anddowns of the movie biz by committing towhat he originally moved to Los Angeles to do: become an author. He completedUCLA’s writing program in June and plansto continue studying the craft in New York.

“It’s something that I’ve always wantedto do,” Franco explains. “I was a literaturemajor, and then acting kind of took offfirst. It became my focus for a while andI left school. But even when I was actingprofessionally full time, it was some-thing that I would do on my own on theside. It can be a very isolating endeavour, though, so I wanted to be around otherpeople that were doing it and I came backto the writing workshops.”

Maybe making a film based on a popularbook isn’t so surprising after all.//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

COVER STORY BRAD PITT & THE COEN BROTHERS

fterthe unrelenting bleakness of Joel and Ethan Coen’s Oscar-winningcrime thriller No Country for Old Men, a crafty little comedy calledBurn After Reading seemed like the right thing to do.

“I thought so,” says Joel, looking over at his brother Ethan duringan interview at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons Hotel last October, just after they had wrapped Burn After Reading. The Coens say theywere happy to pack up their movie belongings in continued

WHAT A

Brad Pitt hasn’t played a truly goofy character since, well, we

can’t remember when. It took the Coen Brothers to bring out the

goof in the big star for their capercomedy Burn After Reading, a film

that also taps into the silly sides of Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich,

Frances McDormand and Pitt’s palGeorge Clooney BY BOB THOMPSON

Texas, where they shot No Country, and move them to Brooklyn Heights, near their New York homes, to film the spy-caper romp.

The film has John Malkovich playing Ozzie Cox, an old CIA pro whois unceremoniously fired because of a drinking problem. For revenge,he pens a dangerous memoir and saves it on a disc, only to have thatdisc stolen by his soon-to-be ex-wife Katie (Tilda Swinton).

Of course, she loses the disc at a Washington, D.C., gym where a self-involved trainer, Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt), and the gym’s owner,Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand), find it and decide to blackmail Cox.

Enter one Harry Pfarrer, played by George Clooney. Harry’s a sexaddict and a federal marshal who’s sleeping with Katie. He stumblesinto the blackmail mess via an online dating service. One incompetentmove leads to another as the players fail to outplay each other asthey plot and plan and screw up along the way.

No wonder Clooney’s involved. The exaggerated tone and style isreminiscent of his previous Coen Brothers comedies O Brother, WhereArt Thou? and Intolerable Cruelty. Of course, Pitt’s a buddy of Clooney’sfrom the Ocean’s series of heist movies, so the pairing was a good fit.

While the casting of Clooney and Pitt seems just about right, bothCoens shrug off the good fortune. “It was all about the availability ofthe actors we wanted,” says Joel. “It’s that simple.”

Simple’s the operative word when it comes to Clooney. He said“yes” to Burn After Reading with a nod, script unread, the Coens say.On set, he’s just as casual. “The last two movies we’ve done withGeorge have been the same sort of thing,” notes Joel. “Our wholediscussion of each character took place in about five minutes beforewe started shooting. Same again with Burn After Reading.”

Pitt was a different story for more logistical reasons. His partnerAngelina Jolie and their brood of children, including their then 15-month-old daughter, had busy agendas (and this was before thetwins). Somehow, Pitt found a way to wedge the Coen Brothersmovie into his schedule from late August to mid-October of last year.

“It’s worth it,” Pitt says, while taking a break from shooting BurnAfter Reading to attend last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Why the Coens? Pitt says that while “it’s true” that his friendClooney can be persuasive, there was more to it than that. “I justwant to work with people that I like and respect. The Coen elementsadd to the flavour of the film,” he says, “but I don’t choose accordingto just that.

“It’s always story first,” he insists. “It’s the story and the story-teller, which is what I feed on.”

And no, he says, smirking a little, he didn’t take a lot of advice fromrenowned joker Clooney about how to work with the Coens. “Wedon’t spend much time on advice, or we never get to it,” suggests Pittof his pal. “Too many good-natured insults get in the way.”

So are the Coens willing to compare Pitt and Clooney’s acting styles?Ethan is. “George likes to get things done before dinner,” he says.

On the other hand… “Brad struggled a little bit more in trying tofind the right thing,” reports Ethan. “I think Brad’s whole [character]came together from a botched dye job for a commercial he was aboutto do. He arrived on set that day and we all looked at it, and we allsaid, ‘Oh, okay. That’s the guy,’” says Ethan, smiling.

As humourous as that anecdote may be, Clooney understands thatPitt should not be underestimated in any role.

“In fairness, I’ll tell you he’s a really brave actor, which is an inter-esting thing,” Clooney says during a press conference also at last year’sfilm festival in Toronto. “People don’t often say that enough about him.”

But Clooney does. In fact, he pretends he’s a little irked by Pitt’s BurnAfter Reading performance. “He’s doing stuff in it that kills me,” saysClooney. “He’s going to steal the movie and I’m going to murder him.”

In fact, Pitt is most proud of creating from both sides of the camera. While filming Burn After Reading in New York he was also producingThe Time Traveler’s Wife with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in Toronto.

“It was nice to be attached to a movie in a lower profile way,” saysPitt, who quietly visited the Toronto set a few times in the fall.

So it seems that despite all of the media scrutiny that has come withhis high-profile relationship and his growing swarm of children, Pitt’scareer goals have not gone ignored. Indeed, he thinks his personalresponsibilities have helped him refine his professional objectives.

“I’m working on things that I’m interested in and I’ve got thefamily first, which actually makes me enjoy the work more,” he says.“I don’t feel defined by the work in any way, so I feel free to just followwhat’s interesting to me.”///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Watch enough fashionmedia and you’ll eventually seethis: a glamourous, sunglasses-worn-indoors fashion type paying the most backhandedcompliment of all — namely, thata collection is, yawn, “wearable.”

Declaring something“wearable” is the industry’sfavourite form of condescension, tantamount to saying “these weredull, ordinary clothes that will beunquestioningly purchased bythe dull, ordinary masses.”

In the upside-down code of fashionspeak, it is much much better to be “modern” or “innovative,” “witty” or“revolutionary” — which usuallytranslates to weirdly coloured, oddly cut and ultimately un-wearable clothes for most of us.

So how to cope? This fall, likeevery season, trends are clusteredinto grandiose themes: Sicilianwidow, new wave gothic, equestrian. A tip: don’t think of them as one-look costumes.

Your job is to find the individualpieces that most easily fit intoyour life, like a reinterpretation of the classic little black dress, a narrow black lace skirt, a richly coloured winter floral or a beautifully tailored jacket.

And because “It bags” havehad their day, satisfy your must-buy-the-latest-trend urges with asartorially transformative, wickedlyhigh-heeled bootie or shoe.

And now the beauty part.Beauty is going to be easy thisfall. Here’s the formula: rock chickmeets boho goddess meets lazyperson. Ergo, messy, but well-tended, hair, natural glossed lipsand sooty, smudged eyes. Justthink. For the first time in yourlife, being clumsy with eyemakeup is a definite asset.

de Blob DS, WII

ll is not well in Chroma City. The evil, monochromaticI.N.K.T. Corporation has outlawed all colour and fun

from daily life. Modelled after its mirthless leader,Comrade Black (just make up your own joke here,

please), the corporation’s goal is nothing less than auniform world peopled with grey-clad drones.

But there is one hope: de Blob. A gelatinous balloverflowing with artistic and athletic ability, Blob

can roll, bounce, jump and slide through thelandscape, painting every tree, wall, person

Confused? Basically de Blob is a highly imaginative platformingpuzzle game with musical elements, all wrapped in Nintendo’swhimsical aesthetic and employing an innovative control scheme.Swinging the Wii Remote or flicking the DS stylus sends Blobricocheting through the city, where real-world (sort of) physics are atplay. For example, as Blob soaks up more paint he gets bigger and canbattle tougher foes, but he also becomes heavier and less agile.

And beware bad artistic choices (like mixing purple and green tomake brown), and ominous traps that sizzle Blob or turn him black, leaving him to spread killing colours until he can wash off. And whilethe plot is decidedly goofy, it supports an intricate single-playercampaign as our glorious globule leads Chroma City’s rainbowinsurgency.
