What to pack for uni &what to leave at home

Important documents. A form of ID, your University admissions letter, accommodation documents, bank details and bank card, and some passport-sized photos.

Device charger cables. Think they’re packed? Check again.

Winter clothes. Cold weather will be here sooner than you think! Pack a couple of jumpers, hoodies and a waterproof jacket, just in case the British weather sneaks up on you.

Pyjamas and/or a dressing gown. As well as being super cosy, they avoid you getting caught out with a late night fire alarm and nothing to stand outside in…

Laundry basket. For hauling clothes to and from the laundry room/launderette.

Small first aid and sewing kits. For cuts, scrapes and damaged clothes.

Photos from home. Some photos of friends and family will bring a little bit of home to a new bedroom.

Childhood teddy or memento. Bringing them along on your new adventure isn’t embarrassing and you’ll be surprised how many people bring theirs too.

Toiletries and cleaning products. Save some room in your packing and buy all these on the first big supermarket shop after you move in.

Small kitchen appliances e.g. kettles, toasters. If everyone brings their own appliances your kitchen will get a little crowded. You and your housemates can all chip in together and buy some to share.

Pets. We know it’s heartbreaking to leave them behind, but most student housing won’t allow pets, no matter how small. Give them a big cuddle and promise to visit soon.

These can stay at home…

Remember to bring…

Don’t stay in your roomStaying behind closed doors doesn’t really encourage conversation, so go introduce yourself to your new housemates. Hanging out in the communal kitchen is a good way to settle in and say hello to anyone who stops by.

Add your housemates on social media and swap numbersIf you happen to lose your housemates in a packed night club make sure you have a way to get hold of them – whether that’s messenger, WhatsApp or a good old fashioned text message.

Remember to keep your ID and keys on youThere’s nothing worse than going all the way into the city centre only to find you are missing something vital! Your student ID will give you discount access on student nights but it’s NOT a proof of age. We suggest you use your driving license for this rather than a passport, as those are a pain to replace if they go missing.

Enjoy a meal with your housematesTake a trip to your local supermarket to stock up on kitchen essentials (tea bags and coee are a good start) and choose a meal to enjoy as a group. Cooking together and eating a meal round the table is a great way to get to know each other.

Explore SouthamptonTake some time to walk around your local area and locate bus stops, routes to Uni and convenience stores. Head to Highfield campus, your Students’ Union and the city centre to discover all the shops, places to eat, bars and things Southampton has to oer.

Go meet other FreshersOnce you’ve met your housemates, knock on the doors of your neighbours – the ones above and below your flat too if you’re in Halls. Meet and greet as many new faces as you can and invite them round for a cuppa (or your first house party!).
