-FRIENDSHIP

TRUE FRIENDSHIP always involves a sincere and consistent regard for the will and desires of another. The selfish individual never is a genuine friend, for his first and basic interest is in himself and he knows nothing of that element of sharing, that experience of mutual concern and consideration that charac­terizes the relationship of true friends.

Jesus Christ recognized and empha­sized this fact when He said, “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I com­mand you” (John 15:14). This dec­laration takes us to the very heart of consecration. Too frequently consecra­tion is regarded as a matter of giving up or giving away our rights to our own will. But in the truest sense Chris­tian consecration is that attitude of

heart that lays the foundation for fel­lowship with Christ. Thus, when we say, “Thy will be done,” we are not giving up or forfeiting something of great value; we are investing in the

richest of experiences—friendship with Jesus.The Psalmist knew the blessedness of this truth when he said, “I will delight myself in thy commandments” (Psalms 119:47). The background for this dec­laration is found in other verses of that sixth division of the longest psalm: “I trust in thy word”; “I have hoped in thy judgments”; “I seek thy precepts”; “I will meditate in thy statutes.”Thank God, there is an experience of joyous conformity to the whole will of God. There is provision through the atoning blood of Jesus for the cleansing of the heart from all that questions or rebels against the will of God. The pure heart finds glorious freedom in doing the full will of God, for in that will are found the highest possibilities for any personality, both subjectively and ob­jectively.So the true and final test of Christian discipleship is found, not in our creed, or even our code of outward conduct, but rather in that deep and abiding spirit of glad obedience to Christ which establishes and maintains His “good, and acceptable, and perfect, will” as the supreme interest and end of our lives.Friendship with Jesus!

" The Will of the Lord Be Done"H ave you ever no ticed tha t we a lm ost always

speak of the will of G od in terms of res igna tion to h a rd sh ip , suffering, o r trial?

W h e n the A postle P a u l was on his last fateful t r ip to Jerusalem, at every stop the hearts of the disciples were filled w ith foreboding . Fears of d anger were expressed m any times. B u t Paul cou ld no t be s topped . A n in n e r com puls ion drove h im on. F inally the C hris t ians ceased the ir efforts to stop th e ir beloved leader a n d friend, a n d sim ply said, “T h e will of the L o rd be do ne .”

W h e n sickness strikes, o r acc ident comes, it is tpii te com m on to say, “ I t m us t be the will of G o d .” I t very well may be th a t such is the will of G od for tha t time. B u t w ha t we need to see is tha t the will of the L o rd inc ludes m ore th a n o u r f ru s tra ­tions a n d l im ita t ions , o u r hardsh ip s a n d testings. T h e will of G od is “good, a n d acceptable , a n d p e r ­fect.”

A n d even in the h a rd sh ip s an d trials, G od wills o u r good. “ N o chas ten ing for the p resen t seemeth to be joyous, b u t grievous: nevertheless a f te rw ard it y ie lde th the peaceable f ru i t of r ighteousness” (H ebrew s 12:11).

Still we shou ld learn to sec the will of G od in m ore th a n o u r griefs. T h e will of G od provides the blessing as well as the bane, the p leasure as well as the pa in . T h e will of the L ord is the source of o u r victories, o u r happiness , o u r m o m en ts of fu lf i l lm en t. T h e will of the L o rd brings us the m a x im u m values of w hich we are capable.

Y ield ing to the will of G od is no t be ing driven away f rom the good a n d w orthw hile . I t is being em braced by the best a n d the highest. H a d we all wisdom a n d all power, we could no t design for o u r ­selves an y th in g b e t te r th a n G od has p la n n e d for us. T o tu r n away f rom the will of G od is to re­n ounce o u r g reatest good.

So let us face the joys of life as well as its sor­rows w ith g lad hearts an d ready words: “T h e will of the L o rd be d o n e .” N o th in g can be be t te r than w hat G od has w illed for us.

Brothers, I call u p on you , by the mercies of God, to presen t y o u r bodies to H im , a liv ing, conse­crated sacrifice, well-pleasing to G od— for tha t is the only k in d o f worsh ip w h ich is tru ly spiritual. A n d do no t shape y o u r lives to m eet the f lee ting fashions o f this w orld; b u t be transform ed from it, by the renewal of yo u r m in d , u n ti l the very

essence of your being is altered, so that, in your ow n life, you may prove that the w ill of God is good and utell-plcasing and perfect.

A n a n n o u n c e m e n t recently came over the ed i­to r ’s desk. I t was public iz ing the C hris t ian Service T r a in in g class using Dr. M. L u n n ’s sp lend id stew­a rdsh ip text en t i t led Treasures in H eaven . B u t there was an in te rest ing typographical e r ro r in the p r in te d copy. T h e t itle of the tex tbook came out, “T reasu re rs in H eav en .”

T h e re will be treasurers in heaven, thousands of them. T h e y will deserve some sort of special crown. For theirs is a thankless task. A long w ith the pas­tor, a n d even m ore tha n the f inance com m ittee an d the m em bers of the chu rch board , they m us t figure an d scrape to m ake the l im ited dollars tha t come in cover the dem ands which scetn to have no end.

T h e religious press recently carr ied w ord of a C a n a d ia n chu rch which had fallen he ir to a large endow m en t , fa r m ore th a n enough to care for all its p resen t expenses. T h e pas to r was w orried— an d rightly so. H e was concerned th a t his people w ou ld forget how to give, an d thereby lose the blessing of God.

B u t this is no t the b u rd e n most of o u r churches carry. It will never be so long as the a t t i tu d e is so w idespread which is lam p o o n ed in a b it of doggerel I recently heard :

O nce there was a Christian,H e had a p ious look;

A n d then w i th m igh t and m ainH e ’d sing, " W h e n ive asunder part

I t gives us inw ard pa in .’’W hile the task of the t reasurer will never be

easy, the ch u rch has established some principles to m ake it safe. A com m ittee of no t fewer than two m em bers is p rov ided to co u n t a n d account for all m oney received by the local church . O n his part , the t reasurer keeps a correct a n d careful book record of all funds received a n d p a id out. Fie makes only those d isbursem ents w hich are a u th o r ­ized by the ch u rch board . H e presents a m on th ly accoun t ing to the chu rch board , an d an a n n u a l f inancia l report to the chu rch meeting. H e makes

regu lar m o n th ly rem it tances of all d is tr ic t an d general funds to the p ro p e r officer. A n d he p ro ­vides com plete records for his successor in office.

T h e treasurer also insists th a t the chu rch bo ard a p p o in t a n a u d i t in g com m ittee to go over his books tho rough ly a t least once a year, as well as the f inancia l records of the d ep a r tm en ts of the local church : the N azarene Fore ign Missionary Society, the N azarene Y oung People 's Society, the Sunday school, a n d any o th e r f inanc ia l records. O nce in a while som eone who is no t a treasurer may ob jec t to this, as seem ing to show suspicion. B u t the t reasu re r m ust insist, for he, m ore than any o ther , is anxious to “p rovide things honest in the sight of all m e n .”

The Source o f PatienceA n old-tim e railway co n d uc to r said he had

no ticed tha t when the tra ins are late, a n d in c o n ­venience is caused to the travelers, it is the shallow, careless, an d idle people who lose the ir tem pers and m ake the occasion u n p leasan t for all concerned. T h e y have had the ir own way so long an d have d irected everything to the ir own convenience so much tha t they resent bit terly even the unavo idab le in te rrup t ion s of the ir p lans an d pleasures.

O n the o th e r han d , business a n d professional people, the ra i l road m an rem arked , to w hom any delay means the loss of m oney a n d o p p o r tu n i ty to do creative work, take the s itua t ion patiently . T h e y have m ade the ir way th rou g h d is a p p o in t ­ments and difficulties to the ir success, a n d have learned to expect inconveniences a n d to m ake the necessary ad jus tm en ts to them. “ Very few big jobs are held by m en who honk th e ir h o rn s in a traffic ja m .”

It was the Apostle P a u l long before who stateil that “ t r ib u la t io n w orketh p a t ie nce” (R om ans 5 :3 ) , o r as we w ould p u t it, " T r o u b le helps us learn pa t ience .” Someone said it is really a p r e t t y dangerous th ing to p ray for patience, for G o d ’s way of p ro d uc in g pat ience is to send trouble , a n d most of us th in k we have enough tro ub le w i th o u t pray ing for more.

Pa tience always carries w i th it the idea of en ­durance , o f b ea r in g u p w ith poise a n d equan im ity u n d e r pressure. I t is ac tually a fo rm of m ora l and sp ir i tua l power, the s tren g th to m ee t adversity and m isfo rtune w i th o u t losing self-control.

It is for this reason th a t t ro ub le m ay h e lp us cu lt iva te patience . T r o u b l e p rov ides the exercise ol sp ir i tua l muscles. T o m eet it h ead on, w ithou t flare-up o r flinch ing , is to deve lop in the Christ- like grace of patience.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Psalms 51:17).T H E R E A R E two rou tes th a t we can take in life: the ro u te f ro m Gilgal to G ilboa , o r the ro u te from the D am ascus ro a d to R om e.

Samuel said to the people : “Com e, a n d let us go to Gilgal, a n d renew the k in g d o m there. A n d all the peop le w en t to Gilgal; a n d the re they m ade Saul k ing before the L o rd in Gilgal; a n d there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the L o rd ; a n d the re Saul a n d all the m e n o f Israel rejo iced g rea t ly” (I Sam uel 11:14-15).

N o w G ilga l was the first c am p of the Israelites a f te r crossing the J o rd a n . H ere the twelve stones were set u p as a m em oria l , a n d here the first Pass- over was ce leb ra ted in the la n d of C anaan .

T h e years h a d ro l led by a n d Israel h a d d e te r io r ­a ted d u r in g the p e r io d o f the Judges. E li ’s sons h a d c o r ru p te d Israel, a n d S am uel’s sons h a d done the same by accep ting bribes a n d giv ing perverted ju d g m e n t . Israel looked a ro u n d a n d the people said, “W e w an t a k in g .” Sam uel protested , w a rn ­ing th e m of th e ir d anger , b u t they insisted an d Saul was selected.

Saul was ta ll a n d h andsom e, w ith gifts o f lead er­ship, a n d yet Saul was a t ragic failure. H e h a d his good m o m en ts a n d m astered a good m any s itu ­ations, b u t he never m astered himself. All the way th ro u g h his career f rom Gilgal to G ilboa various inc iden ts showed h im u p , b u t they were only sym ptom s of a m a la dy th a t lay deeper. H e was im ­p a t ie n t ; he cou ld n o t w a i t o n Samuel, b u t offered sacrifice himself. W h e n Samuel appeared , Saul t r ied to e x p la in ins tead of repen ting . H e displayed v io len t te m p e r to w a rd J o n a th a n a n d jealousy be­cause of D a v id ’s success.

G o d c o m m a n d e d th e u t t e r e x te rm in a t io n of b o th the peop le a n d the possessions of the Amalekites. Saul spared th e ir k ing , Agag, w ith the best of the

sheep a n d oxen. O nce aga in Sam uel a p p ea red at the critical m om en t. I t was a d ram atic meeting . Saul s ta rted o n a h ig h key: “Blessed be tho u of the Lord : I have pe rfo rm ed the c o m m an d m en t of the L o rd ” (I Samuel 15:13). Sam uel d em anded , “ W h a t m e an e th the n this b le a t in g of the sheep in m ine cars, a n d the low ing of the oxen w hich I hear?” (v. 14)

Som eth ing is always h a p p e n in g to betray the m a n who professes to be w ha t he is not. H e may m a in ta in th a t every th ing goes well, b u t one day the re will be the te llta le b lea t ing of the sheep. T h e worst th in g a b o u t o u r sins is n o t th a t they will be fo u n d ou t, b u t th a t they will f in d us o u t a n d show us u p a t some aw kw ard m om en t. Pious cha t te r will n o t h ide sin.

Sau l’s procession inc lu d ed things G od h a d told h im to destroy. T h e person who insists o n lug­g ing a long idols a n d wedges of gold, o r sheep a n d oxen G od has co m m an d ed h im to ex term ina te , will s tand confused by those very fo rb idd en things on the day of judgm en t.

Saul said, “1 have s inned ,” w hen he was d riven to ad m i t it; b u t still he b ro u gh t fo r th no fru its m eet for repen tance . Saul tr ied to exp la in tha t the sheep a n d oxen h a d been spared to sacrifice u n to G od a t Gilgal. B u t the e n d d id n o t justify the means. G od will no t accept an offering of the fruits of disobedience.

Sam uel 's im m orta l answer clears th a t u p for­ever: “ H a th the L o rd as g rea t de l igh t in b u rn t offerings a n d sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold , to obey is b e t te r th a n sacrifice, a n d to h ea rken th a n the fat of ram s” (v. 22).

B u t Samuel w en t yet deeper in his answer an d analyzed Saul’s t ro ub le w ith one sentence: “ For rebell ion is as the sin of w itchcraft, a n d s tu b b o rn ­ness is as in iqu ity a n d ido la try” (v. 23). W e do n o t classify s tu b b o rn self-will w ith in iqu ity and idolatry, b u t G od docs. H e says, “ I will instruct thee anti teach thee in the way w hich thou shalt go: I will gu ide thee w ith m in e eye. Be ye no t as the horse, o r as the m ule , which have no u n d e r ­s tand ing : whose m o u th m us t be h e ld in w i th b i t a n d brid le , lest they come n e a r u n to thee” (Psalms 32:8-9).

Saul p re ten d ed to be sorry, b u t only to keep the su p p o r t of Samuel. H e begged the p ro p h e t no t to leave h im , b u t the c h a p te r ends w ith the k in g re ­jec ted o f G o d a n d has te n in g o n to ru in . A few pages fu r th e r we read th a t Samuel was dead. Saul cou ld get n o answer f rom God. In despera t ion he tu rn e d to sp iri tualism . H ere we have the story of a k ing try ing to call back his lost o p po r tu n ity . His days e n d e d in the w eird se t t ing of a sp iri tualis t seance fo llowed by suicide on d a rk G ilboa.

W h e n N a th a n faced D av id w ith his sin he r e ­pen ted . In tha t im m orta l fifty-first psalm we read, “T h o u desirest no t sacrifice; else w ou ld I give it:

thou delightest no t in b u r n t offering. T h e sacri­fices of G o d are a b roken spirit: a b roken a n d a con tr i te heart , O God, tho u wilt n o t despise” (vv. 16-17). W h e re Saul failed th ro u g h s tu b b o rn ­ness, D av id w on th rou g h submission.

G od uses b roken things. I t takes b roken soil to p roduce a crop, b roken c louds to give ra in , b roken g ra in to give bread , b roken b read to give s trength . T h e b roken a labaste r box shed perfum e. A w eep­ing, b roken P e te r becam e the rock.

Sin is hav ing on e ’s ow n way instead of accepting G o d ’s way. “W e have tu rn e d every one to his own way.” S tubbornness breaks m ore hearts a n d homes a n d churches th a n any o th e r fo rm of in iqu ity . T h e roo t o f m ost t ro ub le is an u n b ro k e n self.

I n the N ew T e s ta m e n t the re was an o th e r m an n a m e d Saul. H e was jus t as s tu b b o rn as the Saul of the O ld T es ta m en t , b u t one day on the Dam ascus R o a d he was b ro k en — a n d his n a m e becam e Paul. T h e O ld T e s ta m e n t Saul s ta r ted w ith a crown an d en d ed w ith a sword in his h e a r t as a result of no t m in d in g God. T h e N ew T e s ta m e n t Saul s ta r ted w ith a sword as he p u rsue d the C hris t ians to s trange cities, b u t e n d ed a t R o m e w ith a crown: " H e n c e ­fo r th there is la id u p for me a crown of r igh teous­ness” (II T im o th y 4 :8 ) . O ne took the p a th of s tubbornness— the o th e r took the pa th of subm is­sion. O ne becam e a suicide— the o th e r becam e a m artyr.

G od hates a p ro u d look, a lying tongue, hands tha t shed innocen t blood, a h e a r t th a t deviseth wicked im aginations, feet tha t be swift in r u n n in g to mischief, a false witness tha t speaketh lies, an d he tha t soweth discord am on g the b re th ren . B u t a b roken a n d con tr i te h ea r t H e will no t despise. T h e choice is ours— the Gilgal an d G ilboa road or the road to Damascus a n d R o m e— Saul o r Paul!

A n h o n ­ored college p r inc ip a l , J o h n A. B roadbe l t , called it “a l iv ing in the th i r te e n th of F irst C o r in th ia n s .”

snow,’’ b u t th a t is a m ere jud ic ia l cleansing away of the g u il t of c o m m it te d sin. David, in his im ­m orta l fifty-first psalm , w an ted the Spirit of G od to go to the very h e a r t of the m atte r , a n d to m ake his h e a r t w h i te r than the snow. “Pu rge m e with hyssop,” he prayed , “a n d I shall be clean: wash me, a n d I shall be w h ite r th a n snow ” (v. 7 ) .

In P a u l in e te rm ino logy the re is the promise th a t the body o f siti ran be d o ne away, while John e n ­lightens us to the fact tha t the re is such a blessing possible as cleansing fro m all unrighteousness.

Sin, you see, is no t merely a p rob lem of w rong­doing; it inc ludes w rong being. M an is a s inner at heart . H e is a fallen c rea tu re ; and , because of th a t he sins, in th o u g h t , w ord, a n d deed. H is g ra m m a r was most defective, b u t Saul K a n e ’s logic, in M ase­fie ld’s ep ic poem , “T h e Everlas ting Mercy,” was perfect. H e spoke of the sin I d id in be ing me.

T h a t G od will forgive— a b u n d a n t ly so— the tru ly p e n i te n t in d iv id u a l is a fact we p roc la im from o u r evangelistic p la tfo rm s con tinua lly . W e revel in the privilege of p ro c la im ing the fact. B u t such a b r o th ­er as Char les Inw ood , Br it ish M ethod is t of an earl ie r day, th o u g h he was an evangelist all his days, s ta ted his convic tion th a t he felt it was m ore im p o r ta n t in these days to get believers sanc­tified th a n it was to get the unsaved converted.

W h ile it is “ the b lood of Jesus,” o r H is life su r­ren d ered in a to n e m e n t , th a t cleanses from indw ell­ing sin, its power, its efficacy is a p p lied by the Spir i t of God. I t is q u i te sc r ip tu ra l therefore to speak of the c leansing grace o f the H o ly Spirit. O ne of the Wesley holiness hym ns prays th a t the Spirit of G o d will “b u r n u p the dross of base desire.” O u r ow n p ray e r asks th a t the L o rd Jesus will cleanse o u r hearts by the in sp ira t io n of H is H oly Spirit.

T h e r e is a n o th e r “ s ide” to the blessing of sanc­tification. W e speak of it as the positive aspect, whereas c leansing is the negative aspect.

P a u l p rayed th a t h is converts m ig h t be filled w ith all the fullness of God. T h e L o rd Jesus said, “Ye shall receive pow er, a f te r tha t the H oly G host is com e u p o n you .”

G o d ’s S p ir i t fills the h e a r t of the sanctif ied w ith H is ow n g lorious inbe ing , His love, radiance, power, a n d presence. In d w e l l in g the sanctified heart , the Sp ir i t of G o d also manifests H is own glorious f ru i t— love, joy, peace, a n d so fo r th — a n in e fo ld cluster. Dr. G. C a m p b e l l M organ used to say th a t the n in e fru i ts e n u m e ra te d o n the sacred page cou ld be su m m e d u p in the first— love!

W h y the Good O nes Go Wrong

IN T H I S m ixed-up w orld it is impossible ac­curately to p red ic t the conduc t of yo un g persons p r io r to the ir exposure to specific s ituations. Som e­times a p p a ren t ly weak yo un g peop le s tand solidly, while people we believe to be s trong fall w i th a crash. I t is t ru e th a t usua lly the p e rso n ’s fu tu re course can be foreseen by the consistent veering of his decisions in a cer ta in d irect ion ; however, the re come those shocking occasions w hen people w ho have always been good are guil ty of an u n ­expected a n d very gross d e p a r tu re f rom the T e n C om m andm en ts .

Paren ts a n d pastors in such times cry o u t for an e x p la n a t io n w hich is d if f icul t to come by. W h y shou ld a young person w ho has never caused them a worry suddenly b reak the ir hearts? T h o u g h a ready answer for all such ques tions is im ­possible, yet we do see a t times those c o n t r ib u t ­ing s ituat ions w hich m ay have m a d e the d ifference between fa ilure a n d success. Sometimes the very roots of fa ilure are p ro d u c e d u n d e r the d il igen t care of godly adults . A t o th e r times s ituat ions which m ig h t have needed correc tion have been overlooked u n t i l dam age has b een done.

A lovely young lady, devout, reverent, genteel, a n d m u c h loved by the church , sudden ly a n ­no un ce d h e r in te n t io n of m a rry in g a m a n who was en t ire ly d if fe ren t f rom her. H e was every­th in g she was n o t a n d n o th in g th a t she was. N obody cou ld dissuade h e r a n d she settled for far less in life th a n she m igh t have had . W h y d id she do it? I t is likely th a t even she herself is n o t ab le to give a sensible answ er to the q u es­tion. Yet consu lta t ion revealed some things which w i th o u t a d o u b t affected her.

She h a d been reared in a hom e o n the p ro ­verbial w rong side of the tracks. H e r fam ily an d h o m e s i tu a t io n were such as to h u m il ia te h e r a t every tu rn . T h e y were called “p o o r w hite tra sh” a n d m ost of the fam ily showed n o con­cern for a n y th in g better . H ow ever she v en tu re d out, got a job , f in ished h ig h school, a n d became a devou t C hris t ian .

She was socially t im id , backw ard , a n d retir ing . She associated m u c h w ith o ld e r peop le or w ith small ch ild ren . She was th o u g h t by h e r friends

to be a very solid person, bu t u n d e rn e a th she was u n a b le to overcome the old back g ro u nd . She m igh t cover u p before others, b u t n o t before her­self, the fact th a t she was a nobody. F o r a time she rose above the ashes a n d he ld a good position a t h e r jo b a n d in the church , b u t always with he r was the lack of fa i th in the person she was. W h e n it cam e to the t im e for choosing a mate she was too bash fu l, too t im id, too asham ed of herself to dare reach ing for f ru i t h ig h o n the tree. U n fo r tu n a te ly , the c h u rch h a d n o t been able to elevate h e r self-appraisal sufficiently to m ake h e r safe from h e r ow n fears a n d self­deprec ia t ion .

A yo un g w o m an rea red in a f ine Chris t ian hom e was p ro u d of h e r p a ren ts a n d of h e r church associations. She never caused h e r p a ren ts a bit of t roub le . She w en t th r o u g h school w i th good grades a n d was a r a d ia n t witness fo r Chris t w her­ever she went. She cared for y ounger b ro the rs and sisters a n d h e lpe d eagerly in the hom e. She seldom h a d dates, cared l i t t le for boys, a n d was never ou t late. H e r folks th o u g h t h e r an unusually m a tu re girl. H ow ever, one day she go t in with a d if fe ren t crowd a n d sudden ly p lu n g e d h e a d ­long in to th ings en tire ly foreign to her. W h a t caused this reversal?

A study of h e r case ind ica ted th a t h e r paren ts m istook h e r self-isolation for self-discipline. She was bashful, even before h e r paren ts , a n d did no t discuss freely those things of concern to her.

She was t im id because she felt igno ran t . She was a fra id of social exposures because she felt she knew too l it t le a b o u t herself a n d a b o u t social living. She w an ted desperate ly to lea rn of life, b u t was too shy to go to leg it im ate sources for it. In h e r u t t e r loneliness she chanced to m ee t some young peop le w ho p ierced h e r shell of tim idity a n d filled the ex isting v a c u u m very quickly . T h ey o p e n e d to h e r new doors of sophis tica tion, in ­fo rm ation , a n d ad v e n tu re a n d she was swept into the m by the fact th a t these peop le seem ed to u n d e rs ta n d h e r well e n o u g h to tell h e r w h a t she w an ted to know.

H o w m u c h b e t te r it w o u ld have b een if she h a d been ta u g h t m o re ad eq u a te ly a n d personally by h e r pa ren ts an d h e r church , so tha t the vacuum

A young m an was reared in the church , shielded in the hom e, a n d k e p t u t te r ly d ep e n d e n t u p on his m o ther . She took good care of h im , p ro tec ting h im from te m p ta t io n as long as she could. F in a l ­ly, however, the eager years th rus t h im in to a w orld of youn g peop le w ho were no t so careful of his morals. In alleys a n d on p laygrounds the vacu u m exis t ing in his curious m in d an d life began to be filled w ith all k inds ol perverted ideas. Me was like a wild hoy, suddenly d ru n k e n w ith new experiences, discoveries, a n d ad v en ­tures. H e hail l ived side by side w ith the world, bu t was u n a c q u a in te d with the verv s ituat ions he m ust even tua lly encoun ter .

H o w m u c h b e t te r it w ou ld have been if he had been given a n o rm a l life, g iven adequa te , f rank in s t ru c t io n an d sufficient in fo rm ation ! W h e n the h om e a n d the ch u rch create a v a cu u m in the life of a yo un g person, they may live to see tha t vacu u m filled sudden ly f rom o th e r sources. Some very good youn g peop le have vacuums.

It is t ru e th a t m any young people get into t ro ub le because they are let r u n wild an d are given too l i t t le p a re n ta l supervision, b u t there are sometimes very good youn g people who break a p a r t u n d e r te m p ta t io n as they a p p ro a c h m a tu r i ty because they have been so sh ie lded as to keep th e ir lives em p ty of some essential things.

T h e bashfu l, t im id y o un g person m ay cause p a ren ts no t ro u b le a n d sti ll be h a rb o r in g a secret h u r r ic a n e in his life. O n e m ay suffer in lone l i ­ness even in good, godly homes. In despera t ion he sometimes finds an ou ts ider who will p ierce the shell he has b u i l t a ro u n d his fears a n d fill it w ith th ings less th a n good.

Y oung peop le n eed in fo rm a t io n as well as con­victions. T h e y n eed in te l l igence a long w ith god ­liness. T h e y n e e d m in d s fu ll of good things, so tha t b a d th ings will have no place of acceptance. T h e y need to know w h a t the w orld is like, w hat sin is, a n d w ha t makes it to he sin. Ignorance, t im idity , a n d bashfulness are never safe fences for keep ing good youn g peop le in the r ig h t path .

T h e ch u rch a n d the hom e m ust give the good voung peop le every prov is ion for self-confidence, poise, a n d nobility . T h e y shou ld have every help in overcom ing the ir bashfulness, t im idity , a n d fears lest these becom e open ings for v io len t tem p ta t io n . If the c h u rch allows youn g peop le to b u i ld ab o u t themselves a shell, o r if the h o m e does n o t p re ­v en t the self-isolation of the person, there is p o ­ten t ia l t roub le . If the yo un g peop le have re trea ted in to a shell of any k in d we m us t h e lp the m open it, lest a v a cu u m fo rm in it a n d they become victims of p re d a to ry people. T h e y m us t be taugh t to s tand so tall th a t on ly tall people will appeal to them.

H E F E A R of the m o u n ta in eak is no t the fear of height, t is the fear of discovery— of evelation. Any sensible person

com ing to D u tc h m a n Peak can sit securely in a cha ir inside the lookou t house a n d know he isn’t go ing to fall. I t is en tire ly d iffe ren t from being up in an a irp lane , w here o n e ’s posit ion depends u p o n m otion . L!p there h e igh t is a k in d of pass­ing i llusion; a sort of p ractical joke, in which everybody part ic ipates an d therefore nobody laughs.

B u t here on the peak the person is in physi­cal contact w ith the founda tions ol his world a n d realizes, w ith shocking suddenness, th a t they are n o t the same as he h a d always th o u g h t them to be. H ere , for the first t ime while s it t ing on the earth , the person looks dow n u p o n tha t which, of necessity, he has always looked u p to.

T h e p leasan t valley, w ith lawns a n d sidewalks, where he lived, is a crevice between m o u n ta in s a n d does no t comprise nearly so m uch of the ea r th as it h a d seemed. In fact he can hard ly f ind it dow n the re in the vast b lue haze of distance. T h e clouds, w hich conventionally move overhead, are below! T h e person feels in to le rab ly u n p ro te c t ­ed, a lm ost naked, u n d e r the overw helm ing heavens. Physical covering itself seems somehow a p itifu l, in fan ti le gesture in the face of the awful reality of infinity.

In ac tual sensation the a i r seems to move th rough flesh an d bone as though conventional obstacles belonged to some o th e r realm.

Each person, com ing to the top of the m o u n ­tain, responds differently , b u t all are fascinated in varying degrees. M any im m ediate ly “w an t do w n .” O f the h u n d re d s w ho visit here each year, a lmost no one rem ains m ore tha n twenty to th ir ty minutes.

A n d w ha t d o they eagerly look a t while they are here?

F rom D u tc h m a n Peak, on a clear day, visi­b il i ty reaches ab o u t one h u n d re d twenty miles in c i th e r d irection , n o r th o r south , f rom M o u n t Jefferson to the so u th e rn T r in i t ie s a n d M arb le m oun ta ins . Yet everyone gazes longest a n d with

most interest a t the place f rom w hich he has justcome.

Each person feels keenly a touch of som eth ing va luable— perhaps vital, b u t a l toge the r in d e f in ­able, which he w ou ld like to have always, b u t can n o t afford, because, to possess it, he w ould have to rem ain w here it is. H e can take a l it t le of it w ith h im , b u t he knows by his experiences in the w orld tha t it will fade, like the w ild flowers he gathers on the heights, a n d which, w hen he undertakes to show them to his friends, have be­come insignificant. H e even feels, vaguely, tha t this va luab le th in g m igh t affect his very p e r ­spective of life if he cou ld only keep it.

T h is m o u n ta in is a t rue p ic tu re of the W ord of God. People come to it w i th curiosity, hav ing traveled all the ir lives in its shadow, u n d e r its p ro tec ting inf luence, ab le always to look u p at any t im e to its holy heights, yet u n w il l in g o r u n ab le to get u p the re to see for themselves, m ore th a n h a lf suspecting the th ings they have heard w o u ld no t be tha t way w hen they get the re th e m ­selves.

W h e n they do tu r n to the W o rd they w onder why they h a d n ’t done so long ago! Yet u p o n the heights they arc fr igh tened . T o look down

u p o n the reality of o n e ’s self— the fruitless agony of life, g a the r in g the qu ick ly rus ting trinkets T im e dang les before o u r eyes w ith a g l i t te r that shuts o u t the light, is shatter ing . I t is an awful th ing to look u p o n the fo u n d a t io n of o n e ’s ex­istence a n d realize it isn ’t there! T o o m a ny people qu ick ly decide it is b e t te r n o t to look. T hey w an t dow n r igh t away. T h e y say the W o rd of G od is an aw fu l mystery.

T h e r e are o thers, in increasing num bers , who s tu b b o rn ly insist o n b r ing in g th e ir t r inke ts to the m o u n ta in lo p w ith them , where they struggle to protect fruitless concepts in a d iv ine environ m ent. T h e y form the culls.

M any people, com ing to D u tc h m a n , ask me why I do n o t have a T V . T h e reception, they p o in t ou t, w ou ld be excellent.

R ecep tion of what?T h e r e is one fau l t w ith m y m e ta ph o r : D u tc h ­

m a n Peak has a l im it. You can go on ly so far. T h e W o rd of G od has n o lim it. Even J o h n said, “ It d o th n o t yet a p p e a r w ha t we shall be: but we know tha t, w hen he shall ap pear , we shall be like hint; for we shall see h im as he is” (I Joint 3 :2).

Praise God!

T W O of the m ost d o m in a n t themes of the Bible are holiness a n d prayer. I t is therefore no co­incidence tha t one of the grea t passages on holiness is also one of the g rea t prayers of the Scriptures. For the seven teen th ch a p te r of John is a g rea t p rayer by the Master, a n d the h e a r t of this p rayer is for the sanctif ication of the disciples.

“U ncle B u d ” R o b in so n used to say a b o u t the Scriptures: “First, f ind o u t who is do ing the ta lk ­ing; second, w hom he is ta lk ing to; th ird , w ha t he is ta lk ing abou t; fou rth , believe he m e a n t just w ha t he said, a n d the p ro b lem is solved.”

I t is very clear tha t Jesus is do in g the p ray ing in this passage. I t is also p la in th a t H e has in ­

cluded the disciples a n d all believers (see verses 6 a n d 20) in H is prayer.

A n d w h a t does H e say? Fo r w h a t does H e pray? H e prays th a t all C h r is t ian believers m igh t have H is joy (v. 13); th a t they m ig h t be kept from the devil a n d the encroach ing in f luence of the w orld (vv. 15-16). H e prays th a t they m igh t share in His glory, a n d th a t they m ig h t have a “oneness” o r “u n i ty ” tha t existed be tw een H im a n d the H eavenly Fa ther .

T h is “oneness” is the u n ity th a t comes to the sanctif ied heart . I t is a h e a r t t h a t is und iv ide d . I t is a h e a r t w here Jesus sits su p rem e o n the throne. I t is a h e a r t w here the “o ld m a n of s in ” has been “ p u t off” a n d “cast o u t .” I t is a h ea r t where Jesus reigns alone.

In the m ids t of a sinful, bew ildered, frus tra ted , confused, a n d to rm e n te d w orld it is w onde rfu l to feel in o u r hearts th a t Jesus abides th ro u g h the H oly Spiri t in com ple te con tro l . Jesus p rayed th a t this w o tdd be d one th ro u g h sanctif ica tion by the t ru th , l i e said th a t H e w ou ld sanctify h im ­self for o u r sakes. Jesus h a d n o sin, a n d here H e m e a n t th a t H e w o u ld s u r re n d e r to the F a th e r ’s will even tho u g h it led to the d ea th of the Cross.

T h e servant is n o t above his Lord . A n d so we too m us t su r ren d e r com plete ly to the F a th e r ’s will to receive h e a r t holiness a n d to re ta in it.

IN S O M E W AYS i t ’s a lo t like a fam ily reun ion . H a p p y . . . excit ing . So g la d to be together, a n d lots to ta lk abou t. A Servicem en’s R e trea t , I m ean. L ike the one we h a d no t too long ago in Berchtes- gaden , G erm any , i t was the fifth for o u r church , a n d seem ed to be jus t a b o u t the best yet. 1 guess i t ’s n a tu r a l to feel th a t way, though .

O u r “ fam ily” is p re t ty well scattered now. T h e y h a d to come in f rom E n g lan d , France, H o llan d , Italy, a n d G erm any . B u t it was surely w orth it. I a m q u i te ce r ta in any one of the 143 w ho m ade it w o u ld say the same.

T h e w orld was real tense r ig h t a b o u t then , too. C u b a m ain ly . M ost m il i ta ry u n its were o n some k in d of a le r t status, so n o t everyone who was in ­terested was ab le to come. I f any th ing , all this only increased the im p ac t of the R e trea t , a n d we felt very g ra te fu l for a chance to be together.

O u r good times were g u id e d by good m en. C h a p ­la in Lyle R o b in so n was one of the m a in ones. H e “sat a t the h e a d of the tab le” so to speak. I h a d the feeling t h a t n o fa th e r ever expressed m o re in ­terest a n d u n d e r s ta n d in g to his sons. H e was a good leader. O f course he h a d a lo t of he lp . C hap- la id C la u d e C h i l to n (a ir force, E n g l a n d ) , C h a p ­la in S h u ra l K n ip p e rs (a ir force, H o l l a n d ) , a n d C h a p la in C u r t Bowers (arm y, G erm any) were r igh t in the re w i th h im all the way.

I t is h a rd to exp la in , b u t a family gets p re t ty close toge ther a t a t im e like this. W e surely did. W e sang. W e laughed . W e ta lked a b o u t o u r p ro b ­lems— a n d o u r progress. W e prayed . T o g e th e r .

U n d o u b te d ly the re is m u c h t ru th in the th o u g h t here expressed. A fter we are saved o u r m ost g la r­ing defects are the first to go: the w ild escapades, gam bling , smoking, p ro fan ity , d r ink ing , movies, a n d dancing . N o one can be a successful C hr is t ian while sanc t ion ing these things in his life.

W e soon find, however, th a t G o d ’s refin ing p roc­ess has n o t e n d ed here. Even after sanctification, we discover th a t H is po lish ing still continues, if we will pe rm it . G o d w o u ld perfect us fo r H is service, b u t we m u s t be willing, a n d submissive, a n d above all, obed ien t to the lead ing of the H o ly Spirit. If we w ould come fo r th as p u re go ld (Zechariah 13: 9 ) , th a t final dross m us t be consum ed, th a t final po lish ing m us t be endu red .

I t has b een well said th a t “heaven is a p re ­p a red p lace fo r p re p a re d peop le .” U n t i l we have su bm it ted to this final po lish ing of the Spirit, we can n o t perfectly reflect H is d iv ine image, n o r can we be a t o u r best for Jesus Christ.

T h o se w ho w o u ld fly find th a t p rop-driven a i r ­p lanes have w h a t is called a “service ceiling.” T h is m eans th a t a t a ce r ta in a l t i tu de the p ro p e lle r a n d ca rb u re to r efficiency drops off very definitely an d

I Ik? wing loses its lil t bec ause of the decreased air density; consequently they can c l im b n o higher. Even so, we Chris t ians reach a sp ir i tua l “service ceil ing’’ beyond w hich we can n o t go except by the pow er purchased th rou g h a d d it io na l p rayer an d consecration.

M any forget tha t the C h ris t ian w alk is a h ig h ­way, a n d n o t a dead-end street. Always before us is a n o th e r step, i l lu m in a te d by the g u id in g l igh t of the Spirit. H e w ou ld lead us o nw ard a n d u p w a rd one step a t a time, a n d so long as we will follow, there is always (hat nex t step ah ead of us.

B ut it is n o t inev itab le tha t we keep m oving up. We have salvation, we will m ake heaven, we are serving, a n d some of these nex t steps become very inconven ien t to us. W e get in to a nice, respectable no tch somewhere u p the C hris t ian la d d e r a n d we park . W e still serve, b u t too o ften we d o n o t con­t in u e to grow. T h e nex t step ah ead may be costly. I t may en ta i l increased prayer, a deeper conse­cra tion, exercising m ore faith , o r go ing in to fu l l ­tim e service. Pe rhaps we are t i red of b e ing p o l ­ished, so we w on’t b o th e r to take this n ex t step, th a n k you! I t m ig h t cost us m ore th a n we are w ill ing to pay!

Possibly th a t nex t step may m e an only the e l im ina tio n of some small th in g in o u r daily liv­ing. H o w fa i th fu l a n d p a t ie n t the H o ly Spiri t is! T im e a n d again we feel slightly convicted to m ake some change in o u r living o r in one of o u r every­day habits . B u t we are so clever in ra t iona l iz ing o u r way a ro u n d the tiny convic ting voice of the Spirit! “Surely,’’ we say, “ this small th in g canno t be obs truc t ing my sp ir i tua l progress,” a n d so we b rush aside the qu ie t , persistent convic tion a n d spend years perhaps m i l l in g a ro u n d instead of tak ing th a t nex t s tep th a t w o u ld m e an sp ir i tua l gain. E ventual ly the small things becom e the large things because they im pede o u r progress spiritually .

W h a t ’s one m ore d r in k to an alcoholic, o r one m ore cigarette to a cha in smoker, o r one m ore curse to the profane? B u t to the one w ho has signed “ the p ledge,” or has m a de a covenan t with his God, a n d who professes holiness, just one d i ­gression can be sp ir i tua lly disastrous. T h e “h id d en m a n n a ” (R evela tion 2:17) a n d the “ t ru e riches” (Luke 16:11) of which the Bible speaks arc for those who are wholly obed ien t . T h ese things and tha t strong daily m anifes ta t ion of His Spiri t in o u r lives are con tingen t u p o n o u r w a lk ing “ in the l igh t” (I John 1:7); tha t is, be ing ob ed ien t to the lead ing of H is Spiri t a n d be ing w ill ing to en d u re th a t final po lish ing u n d e r His d iv ine hand .

U n ti l th a t po lish ing process was com pleted , o u r 200-inch telescope was jus t a huge ch u n k of c louded glass; b u t a f te r th a t final po lish ing was finished, it becam e an in s t ru m e n t fa r excell ing an y th in g of its k in d tha t ever has been bu il t . gems locked in a vault . W h e n a buye r of real dis­c r im in a t io n cam e in to his store, he w o u ld post one of his clerks in an inconsp icuous spot w ith a shot­gun . W i th this m a n s ta n d in g g u a rd he w o u ld lock the doors of his shop, d raw the b linds , a n d un­locking the v a u l t w o u ld d isplay h is m ost precious jewels. B u t the cost o f these was terrific; enough to d iscourage all b u t the most affluent. These were the beauties, b u t the buye r fo u n d tha t the price was exceedingly h igh.

Even so, m any of G od 's peop le today find that the price for sp ir i tua l pow er also comes very high: tha t one m ust be tr i l l ing to e n d u re th a t final pol­ish ing of the M aster Jew e le r if he w o u ld ultimate­ly become a gem of flawless beau ty fit for H is royal d ia de m (M alach i 3 :17) .

T h is process then concerns th a t perfec tion for which we are e x h o r te d to strive. T h is represents self-negation. T h is is th a t crucifix ion of the self­life th a t every th o u g h t , w ord , a n d d eed m igh t be b ro u g h t u n d e r subject ion. A n d so you s ta rt y o u r search for security from scratch. You look a r o u n d an d f ind y o u r ideal am on g those w ho have tasted the tem p o ra l securi­ty of possessions. You are tem p ted a n d perhaps succum b to jo in in g the fran t ic race w ith those who, greedy for gain, arc g rasp ing for go ld a n d sacrificing every p r inc ip le in o rd e r to su r ro u n d themselves w i th “ th ings .”

Hut alas! You are left b eh ind , a n d y o u r hopes give way— u n ti l you no tice those w ho have scaled the he igh ts of posit ion . In this tract Mr. Everett says, “I am a nondrinking member of a profession in which social drink­ing is demanded. I am a W ashington newspaperman, covering a political and diplomatic beat.“When I first came to the capital at twenty-three, a decade ago, I was told I’d have to learn to drink, at least enough to be sociable. The cocktail party is W ashington’s greatest social institution, and newsmen have to at­tend hundreds of these parties in the process of cultivating news contacts and m aking acquaintances among public officials.“Back during the old saloon days and during prohibition, drinking had a social stigm a attached to it. Today the situation is reversed. The drink­ing of whiskey and gin cocktails is not only socially acceptable; it’s so­cially demanded. In some small towns the drinker may still be frowned on, but here in the capital city that is not true. Drinking is con­sidered smart.”In the concluding paragraph Mr. Everett says, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to drink to be sociable. You don’t. California Nazarenes Show the Way

California Nazarenes lead th e d e ­n om ina tion in the percentage of m e m ­bership increase in the last twenty years. And the popula t ion flow toward the Golden State is only part ly responsible.

W hile the denom ina tion as a whole recorded a m em bersh ip increase of 85 per cent d u r in g 1942-02, Cal ifornia Nazarenes increased by 158 per cent.

In the same double-decade California more than doubled in popula t ion, going from 8 mil lion to 17,400,000, or a gain of 118 per rent.

In o ther words, this rerent study by the Nazarene Info rm ation Service shows th a t the gain in California Naza­renes exceeded the gain in sta te p o p u ­la tion by 40 p er cent.

Sunday School Evangelists Lyle and Lois Potter report : “Almost n ine years ago we felt clearly tha t we should leave the pastorate and go in to Sunday school prom otion and evangelism. D ur ing this t ime we have traveled 300,000 miles, toured almost every district (some two and three times) , spoken for conven­tions, and held local church Sunday school crusades. God has been good in giving us traveling mercies and health . T h e o ppor tun i ty to work with o u r lay­men, pastors, church school board cha ir­men. and district super intendents has proved a real blessing. We found o ur pastors, in both large and small churches, working h a rd to build the Kingdom, l’astor H om e r Gilbert has finished a lovely church a t Eredonia, a n d Bro ther Melvin D uncan is adding to the sanctuary and bui ld ing Sunday school rooms at Buffalo, while Pastor McCollorn is bui ld ing an educational u n i t a t West Side, Hutch inson , Kansas. Pastor Paul E. Hess reports: “Closing on December 2, the church in Corbin, Kentucky, had a very u nusua l week with our district superin tendent , Dr. 1). S. Somerville. H e led us in a Sunday school revival, following th e ‘M u ng er’ plan. I.ast year Corbin reported an average a t tendance of 97: for the first halt of the present church year, the average at tendance was 90; an d the Sunday before the revival began, only 60 were presen t—the lowest of the e n ­tire year. Dr. Somerville’s messages were inspirat ional an d instructional, and he led us in going ou t and f ind ing a t least 50 ’s tar’ families himself. On the clos­

ing Sunday, by actual registrat ion of those a t tending, there were 315 present for Sunday school: this hrokc a record of 254, set ab o u t ten years ago. T h e Corbin church, as well as the London church, which jo ined in th is week of revival, are g rateful to o u r distric t su ­per in ten den t for his enthusiast ic in te r ­est and leadership , and give God thanks for w ha t was accomplished in th is one week. For ease of t r ea tm en t, let us divide today's lesson in to two topics: t rad itional religion and real re ligion. Contrary to what some people may th ink , these are not alwavs the same. A m an is not of neccssiiv right just because he claims to preach " the o ld-time re ligion." T h e Pharisees held to what they claimed was " th e o ld-time religion." yet Jesus condemned them fo r t h r ig h t l y / H e said that they were re jecting the c o m m an d ­ments of God in o rder to keep the tradit ions of their fathers. T rad i t io n a l religion as dem onstra ted bv the P h a r i ­sees was not acceptable to Jesus. "Ye have heard that il was said bv them of old time. . . . Now no people of Jesus' dav had more holy and glorious trad it ions than the Jews, and H e shared in those t r a ­ditions. tor He was a Jew bv n atu ra l birth, the outs tand in g jew of all time. And yet He condem ned the Pharisees, s a t ing they honored God only with their lips, teaching the co m m andm ents of men ra th er th an of God. W h a t h ad h a p ­pened to make th is accusation both possible and valid- And is it possible that we may fall in to the same categort in o u r zeal for the faith of o u r fathers?

First of all. it is possible to mis­in te rp re t the past. Memnrv sometimes plavs us s trange tricks—the p a r t is r e ­membered for the whole, moments of high significance tend ing to color the en ti re past. T h i s is good when it helps us forget the unlovely, h u t not so good when it causes us to make the excep­tional of the past the s tan d ard for the present.

Wc tend to idealize the [last, espe- rially in terms of people, and th is may- lead to mis information. Misconceptions grow u p a ro u n d great nam es and events, and recourse to the his tory books is a l ­wavs enlightening.

Perhaps the greatest difficulty lies in the app licat ion of ancien t practices to new and changing circumstances. JcMts spoke of it as using old and weak containers for the s toring of new wine. T h is is holding on to the past because it is familiar and beloved when it really does not meet th e p resen t need. T h e unconscious motive may be essentially selfish, seeking for security while p ro ­tecting oneself against the risks i n ­volved in f ind ing fresli t r u th s for new situat ions.

No religious traditions, however

sacred and however valuable , can lay claim to divine inspirat ion on a level with the Scriptures. And so the t r a ­dit ions of men are contrasted with the commandments of God. B ut this tloes not give us a complete contrast because tile first is founded upon the second.1 lie difference tomes in the m eaning of Ihc term “com m andm ents .” The Bible thinks of G od ’s com m andm ents as teachings to he taugh t and learned and applied, instructions for the godly life, principles of thought and life which must he wisely app lied u nd er ci rcum ­stances as varied as hot and cold, north and south, black and white, life and death. I his i- vvliv the Holy Spirit was given to guide us in to all t ru th and to make the things of C hrist real to Ilis followers.

Trad it iona l religion may lie real r e ­ligion. but only when it is m ade alive and relevant in the present by the power of God s Spirit working in the hearts and minds of God's people; Only as it helps us to see the real and the true ru n n ing th rough the past, th rough the present, and on in to the never-ending fu ture of the k ingdom of God.Lesson material is based on International Sunday School Lessons, the International Bible Lessons for Christian Teaching, copyrighted by the International Council of Religious Education, and is used by its permission.

DeathsMRS. EMMA W. OJE-ARMSTRONG, age eighty-

seven, died in a hospital in Los Angeles, California, on October 30, 1962. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene for many years, and held a license to preach. She gave some twenty-five years to child evangelism in Iowa and California, leading hundreds of boys and girls to the altar of prayer, where they found God. She was blessed with radiant health most of her life and found many opportunities of service, as a minister's wife, writing tracts, and was a real prayer warrior. She triumphantly endured a physical affliction for the last ten years of her life . She is survived by her husband, Andrew; two sons: Colonel Clifford V. Oje, of Hawaii; and Master Sargeant Lyle F. Oje, of Covina, California; and one sister, Mrs. E lla Held. Mr. Armstrong, a retired minister, lives in the family home in Glendale, California. Funeral service was conducted in F irst Church, by the pastor, Rev. Neil C. Dirkse, with interment in the Inglewood Cemetery.

MRS. MILDA BAUER ( “ Mother Bauer"), a mem­ber of the Church of the Nazarene in Malden, Mas­sachusetts, for fifty years, died on October 30, 1962. She is survived by two daughters: Miss Louise Bauer, of Everett, Massachusetts; and Mrs. Henrietta M ills.

EARL E . WORDSWORTH of Seattle, Washington, died suddenly, at the age of thirty-eight, on Novem­ber 15, 1962. He was born October 9, 1924, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the fifth child in the pioneer holiness pastor's home of Rev. and Mrs.E . E . Wordsworth. He married Chryste11 Seals on March 27, 1945. For the past sixteen years Earl has been a sales executive for a national sales organization, and traveled all over the United States. He was one of the best-known and best-loved lay­man in the Church of the Nazarene. He was re­markably faithful in attendance to all church services, wholehearted in his support, liberal in his giving, unstinting in praise, exuberant in testimony, fervent in his praying, and consistent in his living. He had been a Nazarene all his life, a devout, lovable Christian, and his home was a Good Samaritan inn for preachers. He served on the Northwest Naza­rene College board of regents, a member of the advisory board of Northwest District, and Sunday school superintendent at Seattle Central Church. He is survived by his wife, Chrysteil; three children, two adopted children; his parents, Rev. and Mrs.F . E . Wordsworth; a brother, John; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Davis and Mrs. Miriam Reed; and father- and mother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. B . V. Seals. Funeral service was conducted in Seattle Central Church with Dr. Hardy C. Powers bringing the message and Pastor Mark F . Smith in charge. S ix former pastors served as honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Floral Hills Cemetery.

MRS. EDITH RICHARDS was born In Sauk Centre, Minnesota, November 13, 1879, and died in Everett,Washington, October 30, 1962. She had lived in

Everett for fifteen years, and was a faithful member of F irst Church of the Nazarene. She w ill be re­membered for her radiant sp irit, victorious te sti­monies, and fervent prayers. She served as Sunday school teacher, steward, and was active in theN .F .M .S . She is survived by five sons: Cyril, Ken­neth, W illiam , and Ford, of Everett; and Eugene, of S t. Paul, Minnesota; three daughters: Mrs. RuthMcIntyre, of Billings, Montana; Mrs. Mary Hodge, of Lockport, Illino is; and Adelaide Richards, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and a sister, Mrs. Edna White, of Livingston, Montana. Funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Wm. E . Ander­son, assisted by Dr. B . V. Seals and Rev. E . L . Bohannon, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

MRS. ETH EL STURTEVANT, age sixty-one, diedDecember 13, 1962, in a hospital in Weiser, Idaho. She and her husband were engaged in a revival meeting when she became ill . They had resided at Connell, Washington, since June of 1962. She was horn November 10, 1901, in Marne, Iowa. She was converted in 1918 and sanctified in 1924. She taught school in Mitchell, South Dakota, and there was married to Leon R. Sturtevant on June 11, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Sturtevant served as mis­sionaries in South Africa from 1928 to 1934; also served churches in Freeman and Mitchell, South Dakota; Ritzville, Washington; Buhl, Meridian, and Nampa, Idaho; Ontario and Montavilla, Oregon. Mrs. Sturtevant was a member of the Mountain ViewChurch of the Nazarene in Portland. She served as N .F .M .S . Council member of the Idaho-Oregon Dis­tr ic t . She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and a brother. She is survived by her hus­band; a son, Robert, of Weiser; a daughter, Mrs. Lucy Loeber, of Connell; three brothers, Ralph, Harold, and Allison W alker; and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Constable and Mrs. Alice Scofield.

P. Groen has announced here th e for­mation of the Chris tian Legal Society, a new lay religious g roup for Chris tian lawyers of the Protestant faith.

Mr. Groen. who is serving as first president of the group, said the purpose of this society is to provide an o p p o r ­tunity for fellowship am ong Chris tian lawyers an d to provide a fo rum for the discussion of p roblems in re la t ing Chris tianity to the law. T h e g roup will also he lp p rom ote h igh s tandards of legal ethics, he said, an d will encourage and aid deserving young s tudents p re ­par ing for the legal profession.

N e w Y o rk (E P ) —T h e American Bible Society has nam ed its first secretary for Africa: Paul A. Hopkins, of P h i la ­delph ia , executive secretary of the E van­gelical Foundation .

T h e ap p o in tm en t follows the Society’s recent decision to expand its work in Scrip ture d is t r ibu tion in to twenty-five add itional African countries, b ring ing to thirty-six the n u m b e r of nations served.

In 1961 the A.B.S. d is t r ibu ted more than 384,000 copies of Scriptures in Africa. At present a t least one book of die Bible has been translated in to 401 African tongues.

Mr. Hopkins has been in charge of the Evangelical Foundation 's p roduction of religious films, television programs, and C hris tian l i terature. H e is a former business manager of the Inter-Varsity Chris tian Fellowship. W o rk ing with the N or th African Mission in Brita in, he traveled th ro u gh ou t N or th Africa.

I ’m not sure th a t I know exactly wha t the re la tionship is, b u t I do know there is one. N ei ther fast ing nor p rayer is a m a t te r of merit . T h a t is, we do not earn God's favor or deserve th e a n ­swers more by w ha t we do. B u t both are His app o in ted ways of releasing spir i tua l power in o u r lives.

Perhaps we could say th a t the fact th a t God has expressed His will for us in regard to fast ing an d p rayer is suf­

ficient reason for the practice of both. Jesus said in M a t t h e w 6:16, “ W h en ye fast ,” j us t as H e said in 6:6, "W hen thou prayest.” H e said of His disciples tha t , af te r H e h a d left them , " then shall they fast in those days” (Mark 2 :20) . Fasting an d p rayer was common in the Early C hurch , as is seen in Acts 13:?; 14:23; I C or in th ians 7:5; II Co­rin th ians 6:5 and 11:27.

In view of our church’s disapproval of m arriages between our young people and Catholics, is it consistent for a pastor to officiate at these marriages? When he does officiate, would this not give unm arried young people of his congregation the im pression that a m ixed union is not such a bad thing after all, particularly when the cerem ony is held in the Nazarene churchbuilding itself? Would not a pastor’s refusal to have a part in it help toawaken the Protestant young people to a realization of the fearful mistake that is being made?thoroughly scl. a pastor 's judgmentmight indicate tha t he could influence the unconverted pa r l y more by p e r f o r m ­ing the ceremony th an he could bywa sh i n g hi s h a n d s of the whole m at te r and in effect a l iena ting perm anen t ly his own young person as well as the other.

Such quest ions as th is are almost im ­possible to answer in the abstract, and whatever is said is b ou n d to seem to be wrong to some. O ne would have to know the young people personally and know their respective backgrounds and a t t i t ude s t h or o u g h ly in o rder to know what was th e j ud i c i ous and r igh t th ing to do in such a case.

First, let it be said th a t mixed m a r ­riages (Protestant-Catholic) are, fromthe s tandpo in t of both P rotestant and Catholic, risky and thoroughly i n ­advisable. Everyth ing should be done to discourage them. On the o ther hand , any young person of C a th ­olic background who would consent to be m arried by a P rotestant m in is ter in a Protestant church is certainly no t a very strong Catholic.

There is very good prospect th a t such a to t ing person could be won to a real experience of Christ. Unless this is done, the Protestant young personshould he urged not to go th rough with the marriage. But if they areWhen an elder or licensed preacher is present at the district assem bly and gives his report and it is received and his character passed, does this make him eligible to pastor or preach anywhere on this district w ithout the approval or disapproval of the district superintendent in charge? If not, why not?

to preach or o rd ination to the minis try by any d enom ina tion is always subject to the guidance and rules of o rder of the church which grants the ministerial recognit ion. For the Church of the Na/arcne . these are set forth in the M anual of the church . If this question indicates a p roblem in which the de­cision of a dis tric t sup er in ten d en t is challenged, the m a t te r may alwavs be referred to the general super in tenden t hav ing jurisdic tion.

W e in lan d e rs do no t know m u ch a b o u t the sea. T h e sea has b u t l it t le a t t rac t io n for us. Beyond an occasional su m m er vacation at the beach, we p refer the hill country , w here we feel safe a n d secure.

O u r l im ited know ledge of the sea, however, does n o t keep us from u n d e rs ta n d in g the t ru th tha t the re a re ships th a t never arrive. Many a sh ip sets sail for some d is tan t p o r t never to arrive. Every deta i l of the jou rn ey was well p la nn ed ; every m a ­terial necessity was p rov ided ; b u t somewhere b e ­tween the p o r t of e m b a rk a t io n a n d the po r t of des t in a t io n so m e th in g ha p p e n e d , a n d the sh ip never arrived.

T h e r e was a case of this w hen Je h o sh a p h a t was k ing of Judah. T h e fo u r th k ing to succeed Solomon on the th rone , he came a t a t im e w hen the business of the n a t io n was in a recession a n d he w an ted to rega in some of the p rosperity th a t had existed d u r ­ing the reign of Solomon. T o accom plish this end , J eh o sh ap h a t t r ied to re-establish trad e w ith the eastern ports of the R e d Sea a t the h ead of the G u lf of A q ab ah . T r a d e w ith these ports h a d b ro u g h t g rea t p ro f i t a n d luxu ry to Solomon, an d J e h o sh a p h a t w a n te d to ta p the same resources. W e read a b o u t this in the last ch a p te r of I Kings. T h e k in g ’s efforts are su m m ed u p in these b rie f b u t c lear words: “ Jeh o sh ap h a t m ade ships of T h a rsh ish to go to O p h i r for gold: h u t they w ent not; for the ships were b ro k en a t Ezion-geber” (22:48).

T h e ships never a rrived . T h e r e isn’t m u ch m ore th a t cou ld be said. T h e ships were well bu il t , the p lans carefully laid, a n d the course tho ugh tfu l ly charted . B u t the re were factors they could n o t co n ­trol, a n d som ew here be tw een the po r t of e m b a rk a ­t ion an d the p o r t of d es t ina t ion the ships were wrecked a n d the carefu lly la id p lans of K ing J e ­h o sh a p h a t cam e to a n unsuccessful end. T h e ships of the k in g never arrived.

W h e n we were c h i ld ren grow ing u p a n d some­times w a n t in g th ings th a t the family b u dg e t w otdd n o t allow, my g ra n d m o th e r w o u ld say, “ Just wait u n t i l o u r sh ip comes in .” J used to im agine w hat

tha t sh ip was like, b ea r in g its cargo of goods tha t appea led to the h e a r t of a youngster. W e waited for tha t sh ip to arrive, carrying m erchandise tha t w ou ld de l igh t any boy; b u t it never came. Some­where between the d ream a n d the rea liza tion ou r sh ip was lost.

Perhaps you too have h a d ships th a t never arrived. In spite of the careful p lans you m ade, your ship was lost at sea an d w ith it the un fu lf i l led dreams of your life. D isappo in tm en ts come w hen ships are wrecked an d never arrive.

T h e r e is a sense in which each ind iv idua l life is like a ship.

First, consider the sh ip itself. O n ly the best of materials a n d the finest w orkm ansh ip shou ld go in to the cons truc t ion of a ship. Ships are no t m ade for fair w ea ther a n d sm ooth sailing alone; they m ust be b u il t to face the storms tha t come, and e n d u re the p o un d in g of the sea. Your body (the physical house in w hich you live) is the sh ip tha t m ust carry you on the voyage of life. I t is the only one tha t you will ever have to house y o u r soul; therefore you shou ld take the best care to see tha t it is kep t s trong a n d healthy, a n d thus able to face the storms tha t inevitably con fron t us as we cross the sea of life.

N ext, consider the chart by which you sail. N o t only m ust a sh ip have the best of materia ls a n d the finest construction; it m us t also have a ch a r t by which to sail, a n d a compass to keep it on the chart. N o m a t te r how strong the sh ip may be, if it has no char t to sail by, it will u lt im a te ly be lost. T h e sh ip may have a p o r t in m ind , b u t w i th o u t a chart an d a compass, the possibility of a rr iv ing there is very slight. T h e ch a r t p rov ided us for the sh ip of life is the Holy Bible. I n this sacred Book are found the rules by w hich one m us t live if he wants his life to co u n t for som eth ing w orthw hile . T h is Book conta ins all the know ledge necessary to b r ing your sh ip of life to the p o r t of destination .

B u t a ch a r t is of no value unless you have a p ilo t w ho can read a n d keep your sh ip on the r igh t course. It is o u r good fo r tu ne to have the L ord Jesus Chris t to serve as P i lo t o n o u r sh ip of life. H ere is O n e who is tho rough ly fam il ia r w ith the Bible, a n d H is very life in te rp re ts it for us. H e knows where the dangerous shoals are u p o n which ships are f requen tly wrecked; H e can keep us s tead­fast on o u r course th ro u g h any s torm th a t may confron t us.

O u r bodies are the ships in which we sail; the Bible is o u r C h a r t a n d Compass; Jesus Chris t is ou r Pilo t; the H oly Spirit, o u r Power; a n d these will safely b ring us th rough . “W hich hope we have as an an cho r of the soul, b o th sure an d stedfast, an d which en te re th in to tha t w ith in the veil” (Hebrews 6 : 1 9 ) . — J o h n n i e E l l i o t t , P a s t o r , McPherson C hurch, M ansfie ld , Ohio.
