The sporting and entertain-ment spectacle is set for this Friday to Sunday at BIC, with plenty to enjoy on and off the race track.

Ramshankar M, an avid mo-torsport fan, said he just can’t wait until the weekend though the intense longing has almost ended.

“I am part of a Facebook group comprising ardent motorsport fans. We are all excited as the Formula One race is at the door-steps,” he said.

He added the group has maximum supporters for Lew-is Hamilton, followed by Max Verstappen and others.

“All group members are des-perately waiting for the auto-graph signing day when they get to see their superstars.”

This year’s Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is set to be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for motorsport, as it ushers in “A New Era” in F1 following the introduction of sweeping new regulations in the top flight.

very much excited as the event is going to create a milestone in F1 history.

Facility

Located in the heart of the Sakhir desert, BIC is a unique and contemporary facility that is synonymous with the highest levels of global motorsport.

Featuring five different track layouts, the circuit first saw life in 2004 when the first-ever F1 Grand Prix took place in the country, making it the first-ever track in the Middle East to host the F1 World Championship.

BIC continues to host stagger-ing crowds and a wide range of events and activities, and serves as a platform that encourages motorsports in the country.

Designed by the renowned German engineer Hermann Tilke, the circuit incorporates many features of local culture.

C o s t i n g a p p r o x i m a t e l y $150million, the entire facility took less than 18 months to build – quite a feat considering the massive undertaking that was needed to develop the land.

BIC’s 5.412-kilometre Grand Prix Track regularly hosts in-ternational races, including the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, the FIA World En-durance Championship, and a host of other global, regional and national series.

Unauthorised tickets warning

Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) last night warned mot-orsport fans from purchasing tickets to the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2022 from unauthorised sellers.

BIC said in a post on social me-dia that it has been made aware of “a number of unauthorised ticket sellers trying to sell F1 tickets”.

“We strongly urge fans inter-

ested in purchasing tickets only to buy from BIC official channels and authorised resellers,” the post stated.

“BIC cannot take respon-sibility for tickets purchased through unauthorised channels and there can be no guarantee that such tickets are genuine,” it added.

BIC also warned that any F1 tickets found to have been pur-chased through unauthorised channels may be cancelled, and thus the holder will not be able to attend this weekend’s Grand Prix spectacle.

News in brief u Law enforcement authorities early yesterday morning arrested a suspect in connection with shootings of homeless people in Washington, D.C., and New York, the police department in Washington said in a post on Twitter. “Early this AM, law enforcement arrested the suspect in Washington, DC. He is currently being interviewed at our Homicide Branch,” the Metropolitan Police Department wrote. It added more information will come but gave no other details. Authorities had been searching for a lone gunman whom they said was linked by forensic evidence to the shooting of five homeless men in the two cities. The shootings targeting homeless men began on March 3 when Washington’s Metropolitan Police officers were alerted to sounds of gunshots on New York Avenue at about 4 a.m. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

u The number of women who died by suicide in Japan rose for a second straight year in 2021 although the overall number of people who took their own lives in the country edged down, police said yesterday. Suicide has a long

history in Japan as a way of avoiding shame or dishonour, and its suicide rate had long topped the Group of Seven nations, but a concerted national effort brought numbers down by roughly 40 percent over 15 years - although they rose in 2020 due to stresses brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, the Health Ministry said. While the overall number of suicides edged down by 74 to 21,007 from the year before, the number of women who took their own lives rose by 42 to 7,068, the second straight year of increase, according to data from the National Police Agency.

u India is reviewing its standard operating procedures for weapons systems and will immediately fix any shortcomings after accidentally launching a missile into Pakistan last week, its defence minister said yesterday. The missile, released around 7 p.m. last Wednesday during routine maintenance and inspection, landed in Pakistan without causing any casualties, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament. “We attach the highest priority to the safety and security of our weapon systems,” Singh said in the first public statement by an Indian official on the incident first reported by Pakistan’s military on Thursday. “I would also like to state that a review of the standard operating procedures for operations, maintenance and inspections is being conducted,” Singh added. Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said at a news conference that the statement was “incomplete and insufficient”. “Pakistan cannot be satisfied by the explanation given, and I reject it,” he said, adding that Islamabad wanted a joint probe. China urged the two countries to set up a reporting mechanism to avoid such incidents and share information, said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman at its foreign ministry. “Pakistan and India are both important countries in South Asia, bearing responsibilities for maintaining regional security and stability,” he told reporters on Monday.

NATO compromiseUkraine Presidential aid says war over by may

• Czech, Polish, Slovenian leaders head to Kyiv

• Apartment in capital hit by shells

• Russia calls TV news broadcast protest “hooliganism”

Reuters | Lviv, Ukraine/Kyiv

Three European prime ministers headed to Kyiv by train on Tuesday for

the first visit of its kind since war began, even as buildings there were ablaze and rescue workers were trying to pull sur-vivors from the rubble of fresh Russian bombardment.

That foreign leaders could attempt to visit the Ukrainian capital was a striking symbol of Ukraine’s success so far in fend-ing off an assault that Western countries believe was aimed at seizing Kyiv weeks ago.

“It is our duty to be where his-tory is forged. Because it’s not about us, but about the future of our children who deserve to live in a world free from tyranny,” said Polish Prime Minister Ma-teusz Morawiecki, who crossed the border with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Janez Jansa of Slovenia.

Fiala said the aim was “to con-firm the unequivocal support of the entire European Union for the sovereignty and independ-ence of Ukraine.”

The visit comes at a time when Ukrainian officials are playing up the hope the war could end sooner than expected, saying Moscow may be coming to terms with its failure to im-pose a new government on Kyiv by force.

In the latest hint at compro-mise, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday Kyiv was prepared to accept security guarantees that stop short of its long-term objective of the NATO alliance membership, which Moscow opposes.

Ukraine understands it does not have an open door to join NATO yet, Zelenskiy said in a video message: “If we cannot enter through open doors, then we must cooperate with the as-sociations with which we can, which will help us, protect us ... and have separate guarantees.”

Peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations via a video link restarted on Tuesday after a pause on Monday, the first time a round of talks ran to a second day.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmi-try Peskov said it was too early to predict progress: “The work is difficult, and in the current situation the very fact that (the talks) are continuing is probably positive.”

EXPLOSIONS, FLAMESThe European leaders will

arrive in a city still under bom-bardment, where around half of

the 3.4 million population has fled and residents spend nights sheltering in underground sta-tions.

Two powerful explosions rocked Kyiv before dawn on Tuesday and tracer fire lit up the night sky. A high-rise apart-ment building was in flames in the morning after being struck by artillery.

Firefighters tried to douse the blaze and rescue work-ers helped evacuate residents trapped inside using mobile lad-ders. Officials said four people had died in Russian shelling of the capital in the early hours.

Sitting on the ground outside, resident Igor Krupa said he sur-vived because he had slept un-der a makeshift shelter of furni-ture and metal weights: “All the windows went out and all the debris went into the apartment.”

But despite reducing some cities to rubble, Europe’s biggest invasion force since World War Two has been halted at the gates of Kyiv, and Russia has failed to capture any of Ukraine’s 10 biggest cities.

In his most confident public statement yet, Zelenskiy called on Russian troops to surrender.

“You will not take anything from Ukraine. You will take lives,” he said. “But why should you die? What for? I know that you want to survive.”

Czech and Polish officials said the prime ministers’ mission was coordinated with the EU and agreed by the bloc’s leaders at a summit last week. However, some officials in Brussels were circumspect.

While every peace initiative was welcome, the trip “poses se-rious security risks,” noted one EU official. “Some leaders might also wonder: will this jeopardise or will this improve conditions for negotiations with the Rus-sians. It remains to be seen, of course. It’s a fine line.”

Belarus resisting attempts to drag it into conflict, Lukashenko saysReuters | London

Pr e s i d e n t A l e x a n d e r Lukashenko said yesterday

that Belarus had intercepted a missile fired at it two days ago from Ukraine, but that it would resist what he called attempts to draw it into the conflict across the border.

The Kyiv government accused Russia on Friday of staging “false flag” air attacks on Belarus from Ukraine to provide an excuse for Moscow’s close ally, which has served as a staging post for Russian forces entering Ukraine, to join the conflict itself.

“I warned you that they would push us into this operation, into this war,” Lukashenko told Belarusian soldiers, according to the state news agency BelTA.

“There’s nothing for us to do there, and we haven’t been invited,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying. “I want to em-phasise again ... We are not going to become involved in this operation that Russia is conducting in Ukraine.”

Nevertheless, he suggested that Belarus’s patience was not unlimited. Lukashenko said the missile was intercepted and destroyed by Belarus with Russian help over the Pripyat area, near the Ukrainian border.

“Why is this being done?” he said. “To incite us, so that we begin to respond. But we’re not such fools. If we respond, we’ll respond properly, so that everyone feels it. For now, we’re putting up with it.”

War could end by May• Peace talks have focused so far on local ceasefires to let civilians evacuate

Reuters

One of Zelenskiy’s top aides said the war would be over by May, or even

end within weeks, as Russia had run out of fresh troops.

“We are at a fork in the road now,” Oleksiy Arestovich said in a video. He said he expected either a peace deal within one or two weeks or another Russian attempt with new reinforce-ments, which could prolong the conflict for another month.

“I think that no later than in May, early May, we should have a peace agreement, maybe much earlier: we will see,” Arestovich said.

In Rivne in western Ukraine, officials said 19 people had been killed in a Russian air strike on a TV tower. If confirmed it would be the worst attack on a civilian target so far in the northwest where Russian ground troops have yet to tread.

Local ceasefiresPeace talks have focused so

far on local ceasefires to let ci-vilians evacuate and bring aid to surrounded cities.

Worst-hit is the southeastern port of Mariupol, where hun-dreds have been killed since Russia laid siege in the war’s first week. Russian troops let a first column of cars leave Mari-upol on Monday but attempts to bring in aid convoys have failed for 10 straight days. Ukraini-an officials said they would try again.

While Russia has failed to seize any cities in the north and east, its has had more success in the south, where Moscow said yesterday it now controlled the entire Kherson region.

In an intelligence update on Tuesday, Britain’s ministry of defence reported demonstra-tions against Russian occupation in the southern cities of Kher-son, Berdyansk and Melitopol.

Economic isolationThe war has brought econom-

ic isolation upon Russia and led to a near total crackdown on free speech there, with all major independent media shut and Western social media apps switched off.

An employee of the main state TV channel stood behind an an-chor during a news broadcast late on Monday and held up an anti-war sign.

She was quickly arrested. Kremlin spokesperson Peskov called her protest “hooligan-ism”.

The United Nations says nearly 3 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the war. Tanya, who crossed the Danube River to Romania, said she had fled the southern front-line town of Mykolaiv to save her child. “Because the people that are there now are Russians, Russian soldiers, and they kill children.”

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has

released a new video in which he accuses Russia of “trying to destroy” Ukraine.

In his remarks, he describes Russia’s actions as an act of self-harm and highlights the number of people leaving the country.

He said: “We are fighting for life, we are fighting against tanks, planes and mortars that Russia is using against us to destroy us.

“But Russia is also destroy-ing itself. Every shot against Ukraine, this is a step that Rus-sia takes to destroy itself, to self-isolate … everybody leaves Russia now, all who can think.

“Programmers, business-men, artists. The Russian state has never experienced for dec-ades such a blow to the human capital, the blow that it has inflicted upon itself.

From Spain to Bahrain

We had the fascinat-ing opportunity to speak with chef Jordi Batal ler-

Founder of Salero ahead of his travel to Bahrain this weekend, to ask him some exciting questions about his journey as a chef and Spanish cuisine.

With a passion for cooking since he was a kid, chef Jor-

di would stay close to his grandma and mom, cop-

ying and collecting tra-ditional Spanish rec-ipes which he now shares through his masterfully curat-ed menu at Salero.

“ F i r s t l y , I would like to highlight the fact that Span-ish gastron-omy, due to a number of factors such a s w e a t h e r c o n d i t i o n s , languages, tra-

ditions, seas, soils, ranges and

rivers, boasts a diversity of re-nowned products at an interna-tional level. We have a wide vari-ety of lamb, beef, veal, fishes and seafood, vegetables and spices which makes Spanish patrimony one of the richest cuisines in the world”- Chef Jordi Bataller.

1. Chef Jordi, what inspired

you to get into the culinary world?

I was introduced to the Span-ish gastronomy since my earliest childhood which I inherited from my family. My parents sculpted an

environment where fine cuisine was the most valuable and tradi-tional legacy was passed down. I was encouraged to try out fla-vours, textures, aromas and keep an open-minded attitude anxious to explore new cultures.

2. Name three ingredients that you believe are most im-portant in Spanish cuisine. Which is your favorite ingredi-ent to work with and why?

i. The essential ingredient in the Spanish cuisine is olive oil be-cause it is the core and base, nec-essary for salads, frying, soups and the like.

ii. Vegetables, in particular, tomatoes. Tomatoes are the most genuine element for a plethora of cold soups, stews and salads to name a few. They have always been the determining basis of Spanish gastronomy.

iii. Some spices like cumin and quite singularly, zafran (saffron) which has always been bonded with a variety of rice and legume recipes that are highly influenced by the foremost Arabic culture within seven centuries.

3. What is your philosophy at Salero?

To me, Salero stands for shar-ing, family, friends and fine cui-sine.

4. Do you think that Span-

ish cuisine is well represent-ed in the Middle East?

It is never enough. We should work more on the difference be-tween the conception of Span-ish gastronomy aside from Lat-in contribution. In this regard, Salero is the most legitimate beacon of Spanish gastronomy.

5. Name one item from your

menu that the people of Bah-rain must try and why?

I would say “Paella” because it entails the combination of the three abovementioned in-gredients: olive oil, zafran and vegetables.

Chef Jordi welcomes you to a cooking class at Salero this Saturday where he will teach you how to prepare authentic paella. Contact Salero at the Westin, Bahrain City Center to book your seat.

Saturday family lunches are a tradition in Bah-rain. You will often find people spending quali-

ty time with their families and friends over a lavish meal at res-taurants. Several restaurants have gone an extra mile in cre-ating a beautiful ambience and menu that is apt for sharing.

One such restaurant is Salero. Located in a cozy corner of The Westin, Bahrain City Center, Salero is home to Bahrain’s fin-est, authentic Spanish cuisine and live Flamenco.

The Daily Tribune visited this artistic restaurant owned by chef Jordi Bataller to experi-ence their Spanish lunch buffet ‘Vermut A Tu Salud’ which fea-tured a range of unique flavour combinations mindfully created by chef Sergio Boreggo and his experienced team.

As you walk through the en-trance of Salero, you immedi-ately notice the dim lighting with magnificent modern décor that is so inviting and instantly relaxes the mind, preparing it for a tasteful Spanish experi-ence. The greeters and servers

are Spanish which adds to the overall experience.

We were seated at a table lo-cated right next to the breath-taking Flamenco guitarist who played toe-tapping Flamenco music as the jaw-dropping bailaora expertly danced to the tunes. The food display had a wide ar-ray of cold tapas. Ta-pas represent portions of food served in small dishes that are meant for sharing. What caught our attention were the cute little ramekins in which each item was served.

We gathered a few ramekins of cold tapas and relished them at our table. Huevos rellenos de surimi (devilled eggs with crab) was my first bite. The filling was so light, creamy and delicious. The crab flavor was prominent but it did not overpower the egg yolk. The pinch of freshly cracked black pepper and chopped celery tied it all together so well. I then took a bite of the Queso de cabra con cebolla carameliza-da (Caramelized onions with

goat’s cheese). The tartness of the goat’s cheese blended per-fectly with the golden, caramel-ized onions.

We also found the potato salad with tuna and herbs particularly well balanced in terms of fla-vor and seasonings. They were served with cute little bread-sticks that looked like mini ba-guettes.

There were other mouthwa-tering cold tapas such as mari-nated olives, marinated mussels with vinaigrette and gazpacho to name a few. The chilled san-grias and vermut were perfect beverages to wash it all down. They also had fresh juices as non-alcoholic options.

While we were relishing the cold tapas, a series of hot ta-pas were brought to our table by the friendly servers. They also explained each dish to all the guests present at the lunch that day which I thought was a really educative. The hot ta-pas consisted of patatas bravas meaning spicy potatoes. This dish was a favorite of everyone at the table as it consisted of a lip-smacking spice blend on perfectly cooked potatoes. The spicy potatoes were drizzled with two sauces; garlic aioli and a spicy brava sauce which gave it a spicy kick. Served in a wire basket were crispy batter fried squid rings that had a noticeable paprika flavour. A spritz of lem-on added a light, fresh flavor to the deep-fried squid rings.

Egg benedict with tortilla was next. I should point out that by this time, we began to feel quite satiated but each dish that was served to us was very appealing to the senses so we did try them. Let’s talk about the egg benedict with tortilla. This is not the tor-tilla that we all know. Tortilla, pronounced the way it is written is actually an omelette prepared with potatoes and eggs. One of the chef’s interesting creations was the hamburguesa de chori-zo de polla which is essentially a Spanish chicken sausage dressed up as a burger and chorizo was packed with flavour.

Once we were done with all of these little bites of sheer de-light, the much awaited paella which was freshly prepared by

the chef, was sizzling hot and

ready to be enjoyed. We tried the non-vegetarian ver-sion. The rice was perfectly cooked with chicken and sea-food. Crisp, blanched asparagus was served along with the paella which added a fresh bite to the dish. We would have gone for seconds but by then, we were saving room for dessert.

On the dessert display were

c h u r r o s with chocolate

sauce, vanilla cream filled profiteroles, brownies,

mille-feuille and a beautiful flan. There was a decadent, tall ten layer chocolate cake as well. The pastry chefs at the hotel really do a great job in preparing and presenting delicious desserts. The churros were irresistible and I may have lost count of how many I had. The vanilla profiteroles were filled with luscious vanilla cream and dipped in white choc-olate. They were lip smacking.

What we appreciate about the menu at Salero is that every dish is prepared with utmost respect

to the flavor of the main ingredient while

staying true to authentic Spanish flavors. The live music and exhilarating performance, the delectable meal and friend-liness of the staff makes you leave with a smile on your face.

Plan your weekend today and head on right over to Salero for their Saturday lunch buffet that will leave you feeling happy and satisfied. If you visit the restaurant this Saturday, you might meet the man behind it all- Chef Jordi Bataller who will be visiting Bahrain this weekend.

Salero is open for brunch every Saturday from 1pm-5pm. For reservations, call 17171300 or WhatsApp 33502110.

Competitive loans that meet your needs from BBKTDT | Manama

BBK, Bahrain’s pioneer in re-tail and commercial bank-ing, stated that its team of

experts is continuously working to expand its finance offerings to the citizens and residents of Bahrain, to meet their current and future needs and to ensure that they have the financial re-sources to carry out their various personal, family, and profession-al projects. This is consistent with the Bank’s duty towards serving its customers all, while supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commercial sector

and economic growth.Dr. Adel Salem, General Man-

ager of Retail Banking said that BBK would be announcing spe-cial offers on its wide range of loans such as consumer, cars, mortgage and Mazaya in addi-tion to loans specially designed for women, working profes-sionals and retired individu-als. “This is part of BBK’s solid commitment towards providing the finest financial and banking services to its existing and new customers, which includes the bank’s ongoing development of its loan offerings by providing low-interest rates, diversifying

BBK is keen on granting loans that are highly competitive, fa-cilitating the administrative pro-cedures for obtaining the loan and speeding up the approval process while granting flexible repayment periods that enable

the customer to choose a suita-ble repayment plan.

Abu Dhabi crown prince to Japanese PM: UAE keen to maintain energy security, global markets stabilityReuters

Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince spoke with Japan’s prime minister

about the Ukraine crisis and as-sured him that the United Arab Emirates is keen to maintain energy security and keep global markets stable, state news agency WAM re-ported yesterday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also told Prime Min-ister Fumio Kishida that his country is keen on boosting re-lations with Japan in the energy field.

Earlier yesterday, Kishida said he had agreed with the crown prince to work together to help stabilise the international crude oil market as the Ukraine war has disrupted the market, bolstering the impor-tance of Gulf crude exporters for energy importers like Japan.

Kishida declined to comment when asked if he had urged the crown prince to boost oil produc-tion.

Bahrain grants Binance Crypto licence• The licence is Binance’s first in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region

• Binance was granted preliminary approval for the licence in December, but was required to complete the full application process before being awarded the full licence

TDT | agencies

Binance Holdings Ltd. has received licences to be a crypto service provider

in Dubai and Bahrain, a key milestone for the world’s larg-est digital-asset exchange as it sets up the stage for a major push in the Middle East.  Bi-nance got a licence to be the first anchor in Dubai World Trade Centre, an economic free zone, a person familiar with the matter said.

It also won a licence from the Bahrain’s central bank to be a crypto-asset service pro-vider in the kingdom, Chief Executive Officer Changpeng Zhao tweeted.

The pair of licences marked the exchange’s first regulatory approvals in the Middle East region.

Binance’s move underscores its increased focus on the Mid-dle East.

Founded in China in 2017 but banished from the country during its crypto crackdown,

Binance has faced regulatory probes globally. Its executives have been talking with regula-tors in the United Arab Emir-ates about setting a potential headquarters, Bloomberg News has reported.

Bahrain has been one of the Middle East’s early adopters in the digital assets space. The licence will allow Binance to provide crypto-asset trading, custodial services and portfo-lio management to customers under the supervision of the Bahrain regulators.

The Central Bank of Bahrain licence allows

Binance a to operate in the country, providing services

including crypto trading, custody, and portfolio

management services to Bahraini customers.

Lili Reinhart had a director tell her to suck in her stomachBang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Li l i Re i n h a r t h a s thanked Jamie Lee

Curtis for speaking out about refusing to suck

in her stomach on set.The Hollywood

actress has been praised after she re-

vealed she “spe-cifically decided to relinquish and release every

muscle” in order to not “conceal the reality” of who she is for her new mov-

ie ‘Everything Every-where All At Once’.

In an Instagram post of her in cos-tume as her inspec-tor alter ego Deir-dre Beaubeirdra, the 63-year-old actress wrote in the caption: “In the world,

there is an industry - a bil-lion-dollar, trillion-dollar in-dustry - about hiding things. Concealers. Body-shapers. Fillers. Procedures. Clothing. Hair accessories. Hair prod-ucts. Everything to conceal the reality of who we are.

“And my instruction to everybody was: I want there to be no concealing of anything. I’ve been sucking my stomach in since I was 11, when you start being conscious of boys and bodies, and the jeans are super tight. I very specifically decided to relinquish and re-lease every muscle I had that I used to clench to hide the re-ality. That was my goal. I have never felt more free creatively and physically.”

‘Riverdale’ star Lili, 25, was among the commenters and revealed she had once been told by a director to clench in her stomach.

She wrote on her Instagram Story: “A director once came

up to me before a take and said ‘suck in your

stomach a bit.’“ U n f o r t u -

n a t e l y, i t ’ s something I think about often when I’m filming a scene.”

Thanking Jamie, she

added: “Glad it’s being talked

about, thank you @curtisleejamie.”

Cardi B exits Paramount’s ‘Assisted Living’ANI | Washington

Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B has pulled out of

a Paramount Players movie, nearly one week before the filming was set to begin.

After the rapper’s exit, the studio has shut down the pro-duction of the film ‘Assisted Living’ altogether, reported Deadline. The Hollywood stu-dio hopes to “put the pieces back together later this year.”

Cardi chose to exit the film due to overextension. The cast and crew members have re-portedly been informed of the sudden change in plans.

The 29-year-old rapper was set to star in ‘Assisted Living’ in which her character was wrongly accused of commit-ting a crime and went into hiding at her grandmother’s retirement home.

‘Assisted Living’ was set to be Cardi’s third film. The rap-per first appeared in the 2019 film ‘Hustlers’ alongside stars like Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Lizzo as one of several strippers working at a New York City strip club.

Last year, Cardi made her debut in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise as Leysa in ‘F9’.

Meanwhile, on the personal front, the rap-per announced her second pregnancy with her hus-band and rapper Offset back in June at the BET awards and the pair wel-comed their baby boy in September.

Hilary Duff says Vanity Fair cover shoot was ‘anxiety-inducing’Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Hilary Duff has said that her Vanity Fair cover shoot was ‘anxiety-in-

ducing’.The 34-year-old actress

starred on the cover of the icon-ic magazine back in 2003 along-side fellow teen idols Amanda Bynes, Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Mandy Moore, Alexis Bledel, Raven Symone, Evan Rachel Wood and Lindsay Lo-han but admitted that instead of seeing it as a “big achievement” in her career, it was “anxiety-in-ducing” and highly stressful. Asked if the moment was a ca-reer high, she said: “Like explain career high? Like personal high or just like a big achievement? Like I remember being like, ‘This is cool I was included in this.’ But no, this was a very

high-stress, anxiety-inducing day.”

However, the former ‘Lizzie

McGuire’ star went on to claim that the whole thing is now “funny” because of her friend-ship with Mandy Moore,.

Speaking to Vanity Fair for their YouTube video ‘Hilary Duff Takes a Lie Detector Test’, she said: “Also, Mandy and I are great friends now. So, this is very funny.”

Hilary didn’t elaborate on why the day was stressful but ‘American Gothic’ star Evan Ra-chel Wood previously spoke out about the ‘It’s Totally Raining Teens’ cover shoot, claiming that the whole experience had almost reduced her to tears.

In a series of since-deleted tweets, she said: “”I was almost in tears after this shoot. They tried that dress on me, I wasn’t comfortable but they told me there was no time…cause every-one else took up too much time

with their fittings. Then I was given a choice on wheth-er I…wanted to wear flats or heels. I chose flats and was immediate-ly handed heels and told they l o o k e d better.

I was 15 and felt for the first time my identity being erased and the pressure…to shut up and do what you are told. I felt like meat. Since then, I have found my voice. Never again.”

Cate Blanchett developing film, TV projects with her production companyIANS | Los Angeles

Australian actress Cate Blanchett,

who was recent-ly seen in ‘Don’t

Look Up’ and ‘ N i g h t m a r e Alley’, has tak-en the onus for

developing film and TV projects as she’s changing the landscape

of audio-visual content through the Dirty Films banner she co-founded with her husband, An-drew Upton, reports ‘Variety’.

‘A Manual for Clean-ing Women’, her first collaboration with Pe-dro Almodovar in his English-language de-but; Indigenous Aus-tralian filmmaker War-wick Thornton’s ‘The New Boy’ and the Apple

TV Plus series ‘Disclaim-er’ from Alfonso Cuaron are some of the projects that are there in the pipeline of Dirty Films.

As per ‘Variety’, Blan-chett will star in each in addition to producing,

building on her resume of dual credits that includes ‘Carol’, ‘Stateless’ and ‘Mrs. America’. Similar to how she chooses acting roles, the Dirty Films team (which also includes Coco Francini and Geor-gie Pym) takes a “filmmak-er-driven” approach.

Chalking up the compa-ny’s “incredibly eclectic” se-lections to its principals’ Aus-tralian heritage, the actress told ‘Variety’, “No matter the budget or the genre, films are born out of interesting con-versations, so that’s where we begin,”

She explains, alluding to Australia’s birth by co-lonial invasion, “It’s a small country in terms of population, but we individually punch above our cultural weight, because we have such a mix of cultural in-fluences, in a great way - also in a pain-ful way. We have a very interesting perspective on the world.”

Klopp says Liverpool aim to be as ‘annoying’ as possible in title raceAFP | London

Jurgen Klopp said yesterday that Liverpool are aiming to

be as “annoying as possible” as they hunt down Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

City’s goalless draw at Crys-tal Palace on Monday means Klopp’s side can close the gap

to a single point with victory at in-form Arsenal on Wednesday, with a trip to the Etihad still to come.

In the 2018/19 season, Liv-erpool won their final nine league matches only for Pep Guardiola’s team to reel off 14 successive victories to finish top by a point.

Klopp said his team, who

have already won the League Cup this season and are still in the Champions League and the FA Cup, were deter-mined to push City all the way.

“That is the plan, of course, that we keep being as annoying as possible but we have to win our football games,” said the German manager.

Ton-up Babar, Shafique foil Australia’s victory bid in second TestAFP | Karachi

Skipper Babar Azam hopes Pakistan’s batters can keep

faith in their abilities as they attempt to create history by chasing the highest-ever target in Test cricket to beat Australia in Karachi.

Azam cracked a fighting cen-tury with great support from opener Abdullah Shafique yes-terday as Pakistan thwarted Australia’s hopes of a quick win in the second Test in Karachi.

Set a daunting 506-run target, Azam knocked his sixth Test century -- and second against Australia -- to guide Pakistan to 192-2 and raise hopes of an improbable victory, or even a fighting draw.

At the close Azam was un-beaten on 102 and Shafique 71 as the pair added 171 for the third wicket, leaving the home team needing another 314 runs in the 90 overs of the final day for a win, or bat out three ses-sions for the draw.

“The match hasn’t finished yet,” Azam told the host broad-casters. “We need to continue batting like this and keep the belief (to create history).

“Definitely, my hundred was needed by the team and my plan was to build a partnership, which Shafique and I did, but we need to continue like this (on Wednesday).”

spinner Mitchell Swepson to-wards short fine-leg for two to reach the three-figure mark, his first in 21 innings since his 143 against Bangladesh in Rawal-pindi in February 2020.

His hundred came in 247 minutes with 12 boundaries.

Shafique was as solid as his skipper, having so far hit four boundaries and a six as he and Azam batted defiantly for 265 minutes.

No team has ever chased more than the 418-7 the West Indies amassed against Aus-tralia at Antigua in 2003, while Pakistan’s highest successful chase was 377 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2015.

Medvedev, Tsitsipas out as upsets dominate Indian WellsRafael Nadal moves to 17-0 after notching important victory over Daniel Evans

• Azarenka, Kvitova exit

AFP | Indian Wells

Daniil Medvedev was sent crashing out of the ATP/WTA Indian Wells Mas-

ters in a stunning defeat to Gael Monfils that ended the Russian’s three-week reign as world num-ber one.

On a day of upsets in the Cal-ifornia desert, Medvedev was the highest profile casualty to be sent packing, outfoxed 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 by veteran Frenchman Monfils.

The shocks continued in the evening session as Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas tumbled out to 21-year-old American Jen-son Brooksby.

Brooksby, ranked 43rd in the world, advanced to the last 16 with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Earlier, the 35-year-old Mon-fils scored his first victory over a world number one since 2009 with a superb display to dispose of US Open champion Medvedev.

The defeat means Novak Djokovic will on Monday return to the top of the world rankings, three weeks after Medvedev be-came number one.

Monfils sealed victory in 2hr 6min after converting his sixth match point.

“I’m in my zone and I’m a tough opponent for anyone,” Monfils said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve beaten a world number one, so I’m pretty hap-py.”

Reigning US Open champi-on Medvedev had looked to be in control after taking the first set immediately after breaking Monfils for a 5-4 lead.

But after Monfils took the second set -- clinching with a cheeky underarm serve -- Med-vedev’s composure evaporated in the decider.

The Russian earned a code violation for smashing his racket in frustration after being broken in the first game, and Monfils raced through the gears to seal a deserved victory.

Medvedev said he would aim to reclaim his number one ranking at the Miami Open next week.

“Now I know I’m going to lose it (the ranking), so I have Miami to try to get it back,” Medvedev said.

“Usually feeling a little bit bet-ter in Miami in terms of tennis, so we’ll try to play good there.

Nadal marches on “When I play my best tennis,

my good tennis, it’s really tough to beat me. But that’s the tough-est part of tennis is to reproduce it time after time.”

Monfils, the 26th seed, will face talented young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round.

Alcaraz, seeded 19, advanced to the last 16 with a confident 6-2, 6-0 demolition of compa-triot Roberto Bautista Agut, the 15th seed.

As Medvedev was left re-flecting on his early exit, Rafael Nadal’s unbeaten start to 2022 continued with a straight-sets defeat of Britain’s Dan Evans.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion recorded his 17th straight victory of the year with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of the 27th seed.

“Today was a step forward,” Spain’s Nadal said. “There is no other chance but play very well the next day if I want to keep going. If not, I’m going to go home.”

Nadal will play Reilly Opelka in the last 16 after the Ameri-can 17th seed downed Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, seeded 13, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4.

Azarenka tears In the women’s singles, Ve-

ronika Kudermetova advanced

to the last 16 after her Czech op-ponent Marie Bouzkova retired in the second set at 6-4, 0-2.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari , looking to build on a break-out 2021 which included two Grand Slam semi-finals appear-ances, overwhelmed another Czech, Petra Kvitova, in straight sets.

Sakkari booked her place in the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-0 win over the two-time Wimble-don champion.

After the tearful exit of four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on Saturday, there was another emotional flash-point as Victoria Azarenka suc-cumbed to Kazakh 17th seed Elena Rybakina 6-3, 6-4.

Rybakina’s victory was over-shadowed by a bizarre incident which came while Azarenka prepared to serve while trailing 6-3, 2-2.

Play was held up for sever-al minutes as the 32-year-old two-time Australian Open champion dissolved into floods of tears, waving away inter-vention from the chair umpire saying “I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.”

Rybakina described the in-cident as a “very strange situ-ation”.

“I just hope everything is good with Vika because I don’t know what happened,” she said. “Hope everything is okay.”

Nadal says players should be ready for heckling after Osaka exit

Rafael Nadal expressed sympathy for Naomi

Osaka following her tearful exit at Indian Wells, but be-lieves players should learn to deal with hostile fans.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka was re-duced to tears by a heckler on Saturday as she crashed out of the tournament in a straight sets defeat to Ve-ronika Kudermetova.

It was another uncom-fortable moment for Osaka, who put mental health in the spotlight last year after revealing she had suffered from depression.

Speaking after his 7-5, 6-3 third round win over Eng-land’s Dan Evans on Mon-day, Nadal said he felt sorry for Osaka, who was sub-jected to a taunt of “Naomi, you suck” during her loss on Saturday.

However the 21-time Grand Slam king said he believes that players should learn to be ready for hostile atmospheres.

Asked for his opinion about athletes being sub-jected to negative com-ments from the crowd, Na-dal replied: “These kinds of questions are tough to answer.

Filipinos in Bahrain cheered the performance of the

Philippine National Triathlon Team members that compet-ed in the 2022 Asian Duathlon Championships held in Bahrain on 12 March.

Marion Kim Mangrobang and Fernando Jose Casares, gold medalists for the Philippines in the 2019 SEA Games, both qualified to participate in the 2022 World Games in Birming-

Senior men’s national team head coach Helio Sousa stresses importance of intensive training programme to get squad to ‘arrive in the best conditions’ for qualification matches

• Bahrainis kick off latest training at Hamad Town Youth Centre pitches

• Senior men’s squad to play first international friendly next week against India

TDT | Manama

Bahrain head coach He-lio Sousa has stressed the importance of being

fully prepared for the senior men’s national team’s upcom-ing campaign in the third round of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2023.

The nationals are set to play three qualifiers in June against Turkmenistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia in the hopes of clinch-ing a berth in next year’s conti-nental showcase.

The team last night kicked off their latest training gathering in preparation for those matches, which will be played at the Ma-

laysian capital.Sousa highlighted that there is

plenty to take into consideration as they look to “arrive in the best conditions” for this qualification phase.

“We must prepare in the best way for the qualifiers and arrive in the best conditions to win the first game,” Sousa said.

“We already know Malaysia, we played a tough friendly game against them and won, but it was a tough match. They have good players and a very good squad.

The other two teams we don’t know much about, so we must prepare to get some knowledge about them.

“Now is the time to get our-selves ready; to know where we will begin training in the begin-ning of May before we make the trip to Malaysia. We have to take care of the difference in hours between there and Bahrain, the conditions of the weather, the humidity; we have to take all this into consideration and be ready for the competition.

“We must do our best to play in the Asian Cup as that is what we desire.”

Sousa has named a 26-player squad for this training period, which continues until March 29. They will be playing three inter-national friendly matches during this time, first against India on March 23, then facing Burundi on March 26 and lastly against Belarus on March 29.

The national team’s training roster includes foreign-based Bahraini internationals Ali Madan from Al Urooba in the UAE, Abdulla Hazaa and Ali Har-am from Al Tadhamon in Ku-wait, and Abdulla Yousef from Slovan Liberec in the Czech

Republic.From the local contingent,

there are six players apiece from back-to-back national league champions Riffa and AFC Cup title-holders Muharraq.

The Riffa standouts include Komail Al Aswad, Mohammed Jassim Marhoon, Sayed Redha Isa, Jassim Al Shaikh, Hamad Shamsan and Abdulla Efrih; while the Muharraq players are

Abdulwahab Al Malood, Amine Hasan, Hamza Juban, Hasan Karrani, Waleed Al Hayam and veteran goalkeeper Sayed Mo-hammed Jaafar.

Four others are from Al Khaldiya, namely Ahmed Abdul-la, Mahdi Humaidan, Moham-med Hardan and Sayed Dhiya Saeed.

There are three from Mana-ma, including current Bahrain league top scorer Mahdi Ab-duljabbar, Ammar Abbas and Ebrahim Al Khattal.

The line-up is completed by Abbas Ayyad from Al Ahli, and Abdulaziz Mohamed and Abdul-la Hashash from Budaiya.

The AFC Asian Cup is sched-uled to kick off on June 16 next year in China.

Bahrain are looking to secure their seventh appearance in the tournament proper. They first appeared in 1988, and have qualified for the last five tourna-ments in 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.

The Bahrainis’ best finish in the competition was fourth in 2004. They reached the last 16 in 2019, but did not make it past the group stage the other times.

Tuchel says no excuses from Chelsea despite sanctionsAFP | London

Thomas Tuchel says Chel-sea will not make “excus-

es” despite severe restrictions placed on the club as a result of UK sanctions targeting Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The Premier League club are operating under a special li-cence after the British govern-ment last week froze the assets of Abramovich as part of a set of punitive measures following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The licence is designed to prevent Chelsea and by exten-

sion billionaire Abramovich -- described by the government as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle -- from generating new revenue.

Chelsea are banned from sell-ing tickets and cannot spend more than £20,000 ($26,000) per match on travel costs, though the Blues are urgent-ly lobbying ministers for a much-needed hike.

The European champions travel to face French side Lille in the last 16 of the Champi-ons League on Wednesday, well placed to reach the quarter-fi-nals after a 2-0 win in the first leg.

German boss Tuchel admit-ted Chelsea had been forced to make adjustments.

Verstappen v Hamilton as F1 soap opera returns with an all-new packageTDT | Manama

The 2022 Formula One season is about more than just the

renewed battle between reign-ing champion Max Verstappen and the man he dethroned, Lew-is Hamilton.

It will be a heavily-revised version of F1’s high-speed soap opera, featuring new race man-agement, all-new cars designed to create closer racing, and a reshuffled cast that will launch into the unknown at this week-end’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Fourteen weeks after the sour, contrived and controversial last-lap drama in Abu Dhabi that ended Hamilton’s four-year reign as champion and ushered Verstappen to a first title crown, the curtain rises on a ‘revolu-tionary’ new show featuring the most sweeping technical rule changes in 40 years.

The return of ‘ground effect’ aerodynamics for the first time since 1983 with much bigger wheels and fatter tyres, a freeze on power unit development and a tighter budget cap, down to 140 million dollars (127.4 million euros) excluding drivers’ sala-ries, may throw up arguments and shocks.

But below the surface, away

from the gleaming visible al-terations and the uncertainties brought by the Covid-19 pan-demic, mounting inflation and a European war, following Rus-sia’s invasion of Ukraine, the human drama will remain un-changed -- at least for now.

Wounded Hamilton returns Bitterly disillusioned, but

now repaired, Hamilton, 37, re-turns from a hermetic off-sea-son to resume his quest for a record eighth title 750 kilo-metres up the coast from the Yas Marina Circuit where his

hopes of winning last season’s title battle with Vestappen were dashed.

As Hamilton’s Mercedes team and Red Bull swapped heated claims and counter-claims, the architect of F1’s greatest furore, Race Director Michael Masi, was muzzled and later removed from his role by the Internation-al Motoring Federation (FIA), which itself underwent an up-heaval.

Masi had delivered an impro-vised interpretation of the rules to avoid the race ending behind a safety car. That handed Verstap-

pen, on new tyres, a clear advan-tage for the last-lap showdown and not only gifted him the title, but also “tarnished the image of F1”, according to the FIA.

Within days, the FIA had a new president in Dubai-born Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who promised a review that came with a restructuring of race di-rection under two men, Ger-man Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas from Portugal, aided by the return from retirement of the vastly experienced Briton Herbie Blash as a permanent advisor.

‘Thrown under a bus’ Hamilton and Mercedes wel-

comed the changes – without which the Briton might have re-tired – but as pre-season testing began Verstappen declared that Masi had been “thrown under a bus” by the FIA.

Maintaining his character-istically pugnacious style, the Dutchman last week mocked claims from his rival that he would be to slow to challenge for race wins in his new Mercedes. “It’s always like that isn’t it?” he said.

After spending most of the winter in retreat in Colorado, Hamilton re-emerged burning with “righteous fire”, accord-

ing to his team. “You can turn these emotions into power and strength and that’s what I am doing,” he explained.

“If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait till you see this year.”

At 37, Hamilton remains young and fit enough to compete again if he is motivated, but unlike Verstappen, he will have a new team-mate in fellow-Briton George Russell at Mercedes and, after early testing, a car that is “a handful to drive”.

“There is potential within our car to get us there,” said Hamil-ton. “We just have to learn to ex-tract it – there are some hurdles

to overcome.”In typically enigmatic style,

Hamilton announced on Mon-day he will be adopting his mother’s name, probably to race as Lewis Hamilton-Larbalestier.

Like Verstappen, Russell is 24 and will provide a youthful and dynamic rivalry to Hamil-ton that may help lift Mercedes to exploit their potential with the new cars after five years of comparative serenity with Valt-teri Bottas.

The Finn has joined Alfa Ro-meo to partner China’s first F1 driver Guanyu Zhou in an all-new line-up.

Russell, who dazzled as sub-stitute for a Covid-struck Ham-ilton in Bahrain in 2020, has been replaced at Williams by London-born Thai driver Alex Albon.

Danish driver Kevin Magnus-sen also returns alongside Mick Schumacher at Haas, succeeding Russian Nikita Mazepin, dis-missed along with the title spon-sorship from his father’s Uralkali business in reaction to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

In final testing in Bahrain last week, Verstappen topped the times ahead of Schumacher, but warned it meant little. “No one gives full beans at testing,” he said.

Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) will further cement its status as one of the leading destinations

in global motorsport when it hosts a round in the FIA Formula 3 Champion-ship for the first time this weekend as part of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2022.

F3 has held pre-season testing in the past in Sakhir—including earlier this month—but will now be making its competitive debut in support of the F1 spectacle.

Some of the hottest junior motor rac-ing talent from around the world will be looking to make a name for themselves in the F3 sessions this Friday to Sunday at “The Home of motorsport in the Middle East”.

F3 is the official third rung in the climb up the F1 ladder. It is sanctioned

by the Federation International de l’Au-tomobile (FIA) and it features 30 iden-tical cars from 10 world-class teams.

F3 gives young drivers a chance to join their F1 heroes in the paddock at Grand Prix weekends and showcase their skills to F1 and F2 teams who are looking for the latest talent to develop for the future.

This weekend, the F3 field will be hoping to continue from where they left off in their pre-season tests held at BIC three weeks ago. They will be kicking off their 2022 campaign in Bahrain, and will be pushing to make a positive start.

Action gets underway on Friday with Practice at 11.25am. That will be fol-lowed by Qualifying later that after-

noon at 4.25pm, which will determine the grid for Sunday’s Feature Race. The grid for Saturday’s Sprint Race will be formed by reversing the top 12 finishers of Qualifying.

The Sprint Race will be over 20 laps and it is scheduled to start at 12.45pm on Saturday. The Feature Race on Sun-day will begin at 11.45am, and it will be held over 24 laps.

Trident are the series’ defending champions, having narrowly won last year’s title by just four points over Pre-ma Racing in a tight title fight in 2021.

Trident are set to compete this season with a trio consisting of Jonny Ed-gar, Roman Stanek and Zane Maloney, while Prema have Arthur Leclerc, Jak

Crawford and Oliver Bearman. Also in the F3 field for 2022 are Vic-

tor Martins, Gregoire Saucy and Juan Manuel Correa competing for ART Grand Prix; Caio Collet, Alexander Smolyar and Kush Maini for MP Mot-orsport; Laszlo Toth, Ayrton Simmons and Francesco Pizzi for Charouz Rac-ing System; and Kaylen Frederick, Isack Hadjar and Nazim Azman for Hitech Grand Prix.

Amersfoort Racing. After Bahrain, there will be another

eight rounds in the 2022 F3 season, to be held twice in Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Austria, Hungary, Belgium and the Netherlands.

F3 is being joined on F1’s support programme at BIC this weekend by the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East—making for a non-stop schedule of top-class racing.
