The pope has asked each of the world's 2,405 dioceses on or about March 25 to celebrate local ceremonies in union with those in Rome. He has called on each of the world's 784,000,000 Catholics to "rediscover in their daily experience all the riches of salvation." In addition, he has announced that a plenary indulgence can be gained by Catholics in their own dioceses for participating in certain Holy Year ac- tivities. School Lunch Act provisionexcluding schools which chargetuition of $1,500 or more is"blatantly discriminatory" andshould be removed, Richard E.Dufffy, U.S. Catholic Conferencerepresentative for federal assistanceprograms, testified.

Duffy spoke before theSubcommittee on Elementary,Secondary and Vocational Educationof the House Committee onEducation and Labor. He said 164Catholic secondary' schools weredisqualified in the 1982-83 schoolyear and nearly 200 more schools willbe disqualified in the 1983-84 schoolyear.

The 97th Congress attached the

provision to the National SchoolLunch Act with little or no debate,Duffy said. „. •

"We are not convinced that theexclusion provision is justified onbudgetary grounds," he said. "Sinceit has introduced a blatantlydiscriminatory element into theselongstanding and laudable programs,we urge you to support its removalfrom the statue as soon as possible.

"For 35 year all students, whetherattending public, Catholic or otherprivate schools, shared equitably inthe benefits of the National schoolLunch Act and the other childnutrition programs enacted byCongress," he added. "All of this wassuddenly and drastically changed in1981."

Cults dangerous,says Archbishop Cunnane

DUBLIN, Ireland (NC)—Archbishop Joseph Cunnane of Tuam and five otherCatholic bishops in the western region of Ireland have warned families againstcults and sects active in the area. In a joint pastoral letter read at Masses in thesix dioceses on Sunday, March 6, the bishops did not name any of the cults butsaid some were non-Christian and others non-Catholic. Young people are "not somuch converted as taken Over," the bishops said. Among such groups becomingmore prominent throughout Western Europe are Hare Krishna, the UnificationChurch and the Way International. An organization known as the Irish FamilyFoundation has been established to provide information to parents, teachers andlegislators about the cults.

"It obviously was assumed that anyfamily which can afford $1,500 fortuition to a private school could wellafford to pay for a child's lunch. Thisis a subtly specious and false

assumption, because there are manylow-income families making greatsacrifices to send their children to aprivate school," he testified.

"Catholic schools which charge$1,500 or more in tuition do notexclude children of lower-incomefamilies, whose need for subsidizedchild nutrition benefits clearly arejustified," he said. "These childrenare automatically disqualified fromthe programs simply because theirfamilies have made the extra sacrificeto seek out education in a privateschool.

"On the other hand, children ofwealthy families residing in exclusiveupper-income communities whoattend public schools in those areasremain qualified to receive benefits,"Duffy said.

More Military Aid to El Salvador,Reagan urges congress

WASHINGTON (NC) — Saying it is "nonsense" to accuse his administrationof seeking a military solution in El Salvador, President Reagan urged Congressto^approve $110 million in new military aid for the Salvadoran government toprotect democracy there. In a speech to the National Association ofManufacturers the president said the military situation in El Salvador is "notgood" and that protecting Central America from communist takeover is vital toU.S. security. In the speech Reagan referred twice to Pope John Paul KK's visitto El Salvador four days earlier, noting that the pope called for a new climate ofdemocracy and prayed for "orderly and peaceful progress" for the nation.Besides military assistance, Reagan said, his administration would also continueto work for human rights and supply economic assistance to the region.

Fidelity forum says no to cable shows

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (NC) - A group calling itself Fidelity Forum hasthreatened to "go to Rome if necessary" to oppose a series of lenten cabletelevision programs prepared by the Diocese of Providence. The group objects tothe series because, it includes interviews with anti-war activist Jesuit FatherDaniel Berrigan and two controversial theologians, Father Hans Kung andDominican Father Edward Schillebeeckx. Bishop Louis E. Gelineau ofProvidence said that he found the series appropriate for Lent. The bishop hasdeclined to meet with members of the group about the issue. The series,"Spirituality in 80s," was produced by the diocese from material distributed bythe Catholic Telecommunications Network of America, of which Bishop Gelineauis chairman.

NEW YORK (NC)—Twenty-five U.S. Protestant and Catholic leaders have ac-cused Secretary of State George Shultz of impugning the judgment and motivesof church leaders in El Salvador and have called U.S. policy toward El Salvador"irresponsable and inhumane." Thd4U.S. religious leaders expressed their viewsin a telegram extending "congratulations and the assurance of our prayers" toArchbishop Arturo Rivera Dihias of San Salvador on his formal appointment tohead that archdiocese, becoming the principal Catholic leader in El Salvador.The church leaders said they would "resist efforts to increase U.S. Militaryassistance" in that country. LANSING, Mich. (NC)—The Michigan state Senate confirmed the appoint-ment of Mercy Sister Agnes Mary Mansour as director of the Michigan Depart-ment of Social Services. Sister Mansour had been told by Archbishop EdmundSzoka of Detroit to resign because she had not opposed government funding *abortion, which her department oversees. At a confirmation hearing Sister Man-sour said she personally opposes abortion but she also jthinks that as long as abor-tion is legaPit would be unfair to permit it only for wpftien who can afford it. More than 150 volunteers will act

as "greeters" and "helpers" at St.Peter's. They will be able to helppilgrims in at least 20 languages.

A HOLY YEAR as a time ofspiritual renewal has its biblical rootsin the jubilees observed by Jews at50-year intervals, when debts werepardoned and slaves were freed.

The term "jubilee" itself comesfrom the Hebrew word "yobel,"meaning a ram's horn, which was us-ed to make the trumpet that signaledthe beginning of such a time offorgiveness.

When the 1983 Holy Year was an-nounced by the pope last Novembersome skeptics saw it as the Vatican'sway to recoup financial losses sus-tained by the church's central ad-ministration over the last severalyears.

But Archbishop Mario Schierano,head of the Holy Year's central com-mittee, told a recent press con-verence in Rome, "If it had been forthat reason, we wouldn't becelebrating it all over the worldsimultaneously, something whichdoesn't serve to bring people toRome. It is a spiritual event, and itwill be celebrated as such:"

In fact, the Vatican sustainedfinancial losses in celebrating the lastHoly Year in 1975 and expects to dothe same this year. In order todisplay art for its inspirational value,for example, the Vatican Museums,plan to open up whole new sectionsand restructure others to facilitatethe passage of extra tourists, whichmeans paying extra attendants andguides.

Whatever the extra expense of theyear's activities, the Vatican, and thepope in particular, evidently considerit worthwhile.

One highly-placed Vatican officialtold NC News, "This pope is anascetic, and the notion of a Holy Year

fits right into everything he hasalways said. He often talks about thedignity of the human person asredeemed by Christ and the need forus to recognize our value and thevalue of everyone else. The HolyYear will make us think about that."

Marriage, unity topics of interfaith meetLONDON (NC) - When British

churchmen hold a six-day ecumenicalmeeting with Vatican officials inApril, several key social, doctrinal,moral and spiritual issues will beamong their discussion topics.

Twelve representatives of the Scot-tish, English and Welsh Catholicbishops and the British Council ofChurches, following an invitationissued by Pope John Paul II duringhis visit to Great Britain last May,plan to meet with Vatican officials inRome April 25-29 to discuss

ecumenical issues.On March 14 the British group an-

nounced the topics of discussion:Peace, marriage, the uniqueness ofChristianity, how faith is received andunderstood, the spirituality of theecumenical movement, and thesignificance of councils of churches inthe search for Christian unity.

TAKEN TOGETHER, the topicstouch on major areas of ecumenicalconcern.

"Peace" reflects the question ofcommon witness and action by the

churches on social issues despite doc-trinal differences.

"Marriage" includes a range of keytopics on differences in moralteaching and sacramental disciplineamong the churches."The uniqueness of Christianity"reflects the fundamental drive behindchurch unity, the mandate to preachthe good news of Christ to all nations.

"How faith is received andunderstood" reflects Catholic-Protestand and intra-Protestand ten-sions over the sources of Christian

teaching and the role of authority inthe churches.

Communist countries citedfor religious persecution

UNITED NATIONS (NC) - Com-munist nations were singled out forpracticing religious persecution dur-ing the United Nations Commissionon Human Rights 1983 meeting inGeneva, Switzerland.

The commission was asked by theGeneral Assembly last year to con-sider ways to implement a U.N.declaration on the elimination of allforms of intolerance and discrimina-tion based on religion or belief. Thedeclaration was adopted in 1981 after20 years of negotiations.

THE COMMISSION has the taskof encouraging "understanding,tolerance and respect in mattersrelating to freedom of religion orbelief." The term "belief' is equatedat the U.N. with atheism.

JAAP WALKATE of theNetherlands said governmentsshould use the declaration as aguideline for their internal policiesand as a "touchstone for nationallegislation in force." •

He singled out for criticism coun-tries with a communist system andspoke of' unattributed informationabout persecution in North Korea.

He attributed to North Korea thebelief that "all remnants of belief andreligion must be eliminated in orderthat communism may develop." '

He also singled out Iran's treat-ment of the Bahai feligion'sfollowers, saying .members of thatgroup have been executed for themere fact that they profess a religionwhich was not the same as that of theruling theocratic Moslem govern-ment.

Richard Schifter of the UnitedStates complained that the declara-tion "remains a dead letter" in theSoviet Union. He told the commissionthat anti-religious propaganda con-

tinued to be an integral part of thegovernment's program and said that,while the adherents of most religionswere persecuted for their faith andactive practices, "the added burdenplaced on Jews is discrimination andpersecution on the basis of ancestryalone."

D. V. Bykov of the Soviet Union•reminded the commission that thedeclaration is not binding on membergovernments. But he said that Sovietlegislation provides "full guaranteesfor freedom of thought and religion."

Bykov argued that the equality ofthe citizens is not dependent uponbeliefs or failure to believe in religion*He rejected as regrettable, or "evencondemnable," criticism by theNetherlands of the Soviet Union.

Also participating in the debatewere a number of non-governmentalorganizations.' .

Lucie Baltassat, representing theInternational Federation of RuralAdult Catholic Movements, saidreligious freedom is denied to thepeople of Guatemala.

She said" that under the presentmilitary government Catholic andProtestand churches are the object of"terrible repression while religioussects of North American origin areaccorded a privileged position by thegovernment." The mentioned nospecific examples.

Thomas Conception, representingthe Christian Democratic World,Union, complained that "a youngdemocracy has died a brutal death"in the Philippines. He urged the com-missjon.to "move to stop militariza-tion and religious persecution in the

Perhaps more than any of his 16previous foreign trips, the results ofPope John Paul II 's "Lentenpilgrimage" to Central America andthe Caribbean may not be clear formonths or even years.

Some effects of the papal visitMarch 2-9 to Costa Rica, Nicaragua,Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala,Honduras, Beliz and Haiti were im-mediately obvious:

-In El Salvador, President AlvaroMagana announced that the govern-ment would hold elections before theend of 1983. Earlier, the electionshad been planned for March 1984.

That. . . those whobear responsibility inthe villages, in thecities and at the na-tional level act accor-ding to the Gospel andto the social doctrineof the church. . .'

-In Haiti, President-for-life Jean-Claude Duvalier renounced his vetopower, contained in an 1860 concor-dat between Haiti and the Holy See,over papal appointments of bishops inthat country.

-In Nicaragua, to the pope'sdismay, church-state tensions rose-toa fever pitch at a Mass in Managua,where supporters of the Marxist-influenced Sandinista governmentengaged in a shouting match with thepope. The.ensuing controversy is like-ly to cause even greater divisions bet-ween church and state in the nearfuture.

-In Guatemala, where fighting bet-ween government forces and guer-rillas have taken a large toll in recentyears, President Efrain Rios Monttannounced an amnesty for guerrillasand promised to ease the state of.siege in his country.

"We know and understand that wehave sinned, that we have abusedpower, and we want to reconcileourselves with the people," RiosMontt said six days after the papalvisit.

BUT THE RESPONSE to thewider issues dealt with in Pope JohnPaul's 40 speeches - his calls for anend to violence, for social justice, forrespect for human dignity and life,

. for fidelity to church doctrine and therejection of ideological misuse of theGospel - may be a long time emerg-ing.

Pope John Paul summed up hishopes for the religious life of both

Central and South America in hisMarch 9 address to representativesof the entire Latin American hierar-chy, meeting in Prot-au-Prince,Haiti. •

He outlined a plan for "not the re-evangelization but a new evangeliza-tion of Latin America, new in its ar-dor, in its methods, in itsexpression."

The "fundamental suppositions" ofsuch a program would include agrowth in vocations and "ap-propriate" formation of priests inspiritual, doctrinal and pastoral mat-ters; greater collaboration of the laityin the work of evangelization; andsafeguarding of the "integrity" ofthe orientation for the LatinAmerican church approved fouryears ago in Puebla, Mexico, hesaid.

The Puebla document must be pro-tected from "deformed interpreta-tions, deforming reductionisms andunworthy applications On one hand oreclipse oh the other," the pope added.

BUT THE POPE'S wordsthroughout the trip also made clearthat the church in Latin America cannot ignore social realities.

The Latin American people "in re-cent years have certainly knownnotable material progress and arebeginning to offer to the world theresults of their efforts in many areasof civilization," he said.

"The Emerging Layman" was thetitle of a book and the topic of in-numerable articles and speeches inthe years following the SecondVatican Council.

Now the new Code of Canon Law,incorporating into general churchlaw the council's reforms, is a conve-nient milestone to mark the progressof the laity in the church in the 20years since "Vatican I I began. In thenew code's pages are all the majorlegal landmarks of changed churchthinking and practice regarding thelaity.

A first point of interest is that "TheEmerging Layman," if written, to-day, would probably have to be called"The Emerging Layperson." Virtual-ly all forms of sexual discriminationbetween laymen and laywomen thatexisted in the old Code of Canon Laware eliminated in the new code.

As Father Donald E. heintschel, acanon law expert and associategeneral secretary of the NationalConference of Catholic Bishops-U.S.Catholic Conference, summarized it,"In the new code, sexist discrimina-tion has been replaced by discrimina-tion based on ordination."

But the nature of discrimination,based on ordination has changednoticeably, too.

Legal breakthroughAn important backdrop to the role

of laypersons in the new code is whatanother canonist, Jesuit FatherLadislas Orsy of Georgetown Univer-

sity, called the restriction ondefinition of cleric."

Exemplifying that basic changewas the action by Pope Paul VI in1972 when he suppressed clerical ton-sure and the clerical orders of porter,exorcist, lector, acolyte nad

priest (who is the actual pastor). Theymay be consulted by the bishop, if cir-cumstances warrant, in the choice ofa new pastor.• At the diocesan level, laypersons

may be members of the diocesansynod and its commissions, of the

Of those clerical orders suppressed,Pope Paul established two, lector andacolyte, as lay ministries. He alsorevitalized the order of deacon in itsown right, reinstituting the perma-nent diaconate and opening that or-dained ministry to married men.

The more restrictive definition of acleric, based on a sounder theology ofthe role of ordained ministry and therelation between pastoral respon-sibility and juridical authority in thechurch, was a legal breakthroughthat allowed laypersons to do manythings once restricted to priests, saidFather Orsy.

Of course many of the changes in"'the new canon law code that affectthe laity have been gradually incor-porated into church practice in theyears since Vatican II, so their inclu-sion in the new code is more a matter

• of integrating and solidifying thechanges rather than introducing realinnovations.

Here are some of the things thatare open to laymen and laywomen inthe new code which under the oldcode simply did not exist or wererestricted—in general practice if notalways strictly by law—to clergymen:• At the parish level, laypersons

may be members of the parish counciland the parish financial council;-members of a team ministry, headed ,by a priest, that is in charge of thepastoral care of a parish; or ad-ministrators of priestless parishesunder the leadership of a neighboring

bishop's financial council and of thediocesan pastoral council. They maybe consulted in the selection ofbishops. A layperson can serve as adiocesan chancellor or administratorof finances, or on the diocesan courtas an auditor, assessor, defender ofthe bond, promoter of the faith orjudge.• At the provincial and regional

levels, representatives of womenReligious are to participate, andother laypersons may be asked toparticipate, in provincial and regionalcouncils of bishops.• In certain circumstances (that

seem to apply chiefly if not solely tomission areas), with permission fromthe Holy See a bishop may appointlaypersons to administer baptism orserve as official church witness formarriages on a regular basis when nopriest is available.• Laypersons may serve as lectors

and in other ministries at Mass. (Inone of the few exceptions to the newcode's general rule of non-discrimination toward women, onlylaymen may serve as acolytes, andonly laymen may be formally install-ed^as lectors or acolytes.)• Laypersons may teach in

seminaries and on pontifical facultiesand may be book censors for bishops.For the first time the right of layper-sons to receive pontifical-degres andofficial church mandates to teach thesacred sciences is spelled out ingeneral church law.

• In general, non-clerical religiousorders and organizations of the layapostolate have, greater freedom

than they did under the old code.

EqualitySuch specifics in the final draft of

the new code show the expansion oflay roles in the church at one level,but they do not capture the underly-ing spirit of the new code. That spiritis seen in a number of ways, amongthem:• for the first time the fundamental

equality of all the people of God byvirtue of baptism is spelled but.• There is a stress on the rights as

well as the duties of the layperson,and on interpretation of the hierar-chical governance of the churchprimarily in terms of pastoral servicerather than jurisdictional authority;• The vocation of marriage and

family life and the fundamental roleof spouses in "the building up of thepeople of God" are emphasized.

Active lay roles and ministries arerecognized and spelled out in the

• sacraments and divine worship,which are at the center of church life.

In the area of lay rights, FatherJames Provost, executive director ofthe Canon Law Society of America,cited as one of the important ad-vances in the new code the legal pro-tections given to lay employees of thechurch.

Parents come firstOne good example of the difference

in spirit between the old code and thenew comes in the treatment ofCatholic education.

In the old code the law portrays theparents' obligation as a largelypassive one of surrendering the childto the clergy to be educated.

In the new, parents have primaryresponsibility for education; layper-sons are seen as having a profer roleas teachers of the faith in their ownright rather than as substitutes ifthere are not enough clergy; and thegovernance of Catholic education bypriests and bishops is placed in amore pastoral context of service andfulfillment of pastoral respon-sibilities.

I went downstairs to the Center. My name is Bruce, Isaid. I'm Mark, he said. I'm from (he named a largesouthwestern city). I saw you on TV and had to talk to youso. I hitchhiked 2,000 miles. I was afraid to-fake a plane orbus. He was 19, a good-looking kid, with a lot of black hairfalling over a pair of the most watchful blue eyes I had seenin a long time. A slender, coiled-spring body movedrestlessly all the time we talked.

I ran away when I was 14, he said. My father and mothefwere alcoholics. Mark stopped for a moment and looked atme searchingly. I've got to tell you this, he said with asmall, rather uncertain, smile. If you don't mind, I'd ap-preciate it if you didn't lay any God talk on me.

He.began again: I met this guy. He gave me a lot of affec-tion and a place to live. I needed the affection real bad. He

taught me a lot about sex and, I guess, he put me to.work....I didn't mind it so much after a while. I was young

and pretty so he sent me out to my customers dressed likea girl—a transvestite. His face twisted a bit. I lived with 14other boys in this big house. We were all pretty young andpretty scared. He made all of us watch a kid get beatenwith a hanger. It was bad. That's what happened when youtried to leave. The next time you're dead.

* Mark lit his tenth cigarette of the hour. His hands wereshaking slightly. When I turned 17 and got some musclesand my beard began to grow, I went butch—I didn't have to

asking what real love is, and "ifthat's their No. 1 question, with thedivorce rate what it is, that's an ex-cellent question," the Rev. Ray E.Short, a Methodist Minister, said inan interview with the DenverCatholic Register.

"There's more to sex than abreathless bounce in bed," saidShort, who is also a professor ofsociology at the University ofWisconsin-Platteville. He is theauthor of "Sex, Love or Infatuation:How Can I Really Know?" which isnow in its ninth printing, with170,000 copies sold.

Short was in Denver to talk toCatholic school and parish groups.His visit was sponsored by theDenver archdiocesan Pro-Life Com-mission, Catholic youth ministry pro-grams and a number of parishes.

The trip to Denver was somewhatof a homecoming for Short, who methis wife of 29 years at the Universityof Denver.

IN AN INTERVIEW he said hedoesn't provide answers or tell youngpeople what- decisions to make aboutpremarital sex, love and infatuation.But his research gives clues to helpyoung people make the distinctionbetween kid stuff and the real thing.

"I am convinced," he said, "thatmost marriages are based on roman-tic love, not real love. Many coupleshave the elements of real love thatthey develop after marriage. But inview of 50-50 odds the marriagewon't survive, it's too dangerous togamble. They better know beforethey take those vows."

Short said he believes today'soveremphasis on sex has young peo-ple confused about premarital sexand what constitutes a good relation-ship between two people. -

"The public media have put anoveremphasis on sex," he said. "I tellyoung people that I hope they don'tbuy that cheap, physical idea of sex.Virtually every night on any televi-sion show you can see couples go dan-cing, have a few cocktails and end upnaked between the sheets. I hopethey don't buy that, or they'll missout on the most wonderful, fulfilling,exciting experience that is good sex.'

THAT "BREATHLESS Bouncein Bed" is not good sex, Short said,because good sex can be experiencedonly in marriage, when a couple isbeyond the fears, the feelings of low-esteem and the guilt that accompanypremarital sex.

"Good sex is total sex," which ,ismore than the joining of two bodies,Short explained. It is the joining oftwo people who truly love oneanother and their personalities, theiremotions, their ides and theirspiritual selves.

Many parents, he said, want to talkabout sex with their children butdon't always know how. One of hisobjections in giving talks "is to getyoung people and parents talking andopen the door for young people totalk about these intimate subjects, totalk openly and listen to each other."

To the great relief of parents, hesaid, current surveys indicate that in-creasing numbers of teen-agers arerejecting premari tal sex forthemselves.

Should church backimmigration bill?

CHICAGO (NC) - With Congressmulling over an immigration reformbill, the nation's bishops are seekingrecommendations from Catholics onthe grassroots level on how to ap-proach the proposed legislation.

Representatives of. the U.S.Catholic Conference Secretariat forHispanic Affairs and the USCCMigration and Refugee Services haveheld "town meetings" and round-table discussions in San Antonio,Texas, San Hose, Calif., and Chicago.A meeting in New York was postpon-ed by a snow storm and may bereschedules.

They discussed the posture thechurch has historically taken on im-migration, the experience of the 1982immigration bill which did not passand the options emerging as the 98thCongress prepared a new round ofimmigration proposals for late Marchor early April.

The USCC had supported the 1982bill, but with reservations.

"THE AIM," said Chicago hostZeferino Ochoa, director of the ar-chdiocesan Latin American Commit-tee, a department of CatholicCharities, "is to ensure that thechurch's voice, speaking with onevoice, will be effective in the cause ofjustice in the coming monts.

"Though there was support for. afair and current legalization pro-gram, the overall consensus was thatsupport for the overall bill as writtenwas not there," he said of the 1982 ef-forts.

During discussions numerous

reservations surfaced about specificprovisions of the bills now under con-sideration in the House and Senate.

KEY OPPOSITION was voicedagainst aspects of provisions dealingwith family reunification, legalizationof some aliens, sanctions againstemployers hiring illegal workers,asylum, and refugees and temporaryforeign worker programs.

Auxiliary Bishop Nevin W. Hayesof Chicago, episcopal vicar for the Of-fice for the Hispanic Apostolate, said,"this is a very Christian, practicaland humane approach to the wholearea of immigration." The church "ison firm moral ground in approvingthis legislation with reservations," hesaid.

The bishop said approval of the billwould serve as "foot in the door"after which there would be thepossibility for revision, refinementand improvement. '

Others argued that the legislationwas a "one shot deal" and thatchanges should be made before enact-ment.

The USCC was invited to testify-$tcongressional hearings on the bills^but opted to meet with its constituen-cy to gain feedback to possibly updatetestimony already given to Congress'

Recommendations from themeetings will be given to the bishops'advisory committee in Washington atthe end of March. At that point, thebishops will have the options of giv-ing further testimony, making a writ-ten statement or not making anystatement at all.

Child neglect billincludes handicapped

WASHINGTON (NC)- Legislationwas approved by a House subcommit-tee to expand the~definition of childneglect, to include cases in whichchildren born with life-threateningcongenital defects are denied food ormedical care. .• The definition was included in aproposed $23 million bill on childabuse prevention and treatment ap-proved by the select education sub-«committee of the House Educationand Labor Committee March 9. Thebill goes to the full committee.

If passed, federal funds could be

denied to state child-abuse programsthat do not recognize the expandeddefinition. '

THE REGAN ADMINISTRA-TION had earlier announced regula-tions to prevent hospitals from deny-ing food and medical treatment tohandicapped newborn infants.

The regulations would provide for atoll-free hotline for reporting cases ofneglect. Hospitals receiving federalaid would-be required to post a warn-ing that people might be prosecuted ifthey deny care to the handicapped orretarded.

Local family expertslike "squeal' rule

Pro-lifers and abortion supportersare enbroiled in yet another con-troversial dispute over the issuanceof a "squeal" rule which would enablesome parents to know whether or nottheir children are using birth control." The ruling requires clinics thatreceive federal funds' to notifyparents in writing after prescribingbirth control devices or medication toteenagers up to age 17.

Pro-family groups contend thatsince the government is already- us-ing tax dollars to provide contracep-tion for young people, the least it cando is. inform parents.

Planned Parenthood and healthagencies believe the regulation wouldpush the government too far intofamily affairs.

IN SOUTH FLORIDA, Catholicfamily and education -experts con-tacted by The Voice expressed sup-port for the rule, citing better com-munication in the home and parentalresponsibility.

The ruling requiresclinics that receivefederal funds to notifyparents in writing afterprescribing birth con-trol devices or medica-tion to teenagers up toage 17/

Currently, the Department ofHealth and Human Services rule isbeing reviewed by a federal judge inWashington, D.C. who issued arestraining order. A New Yorkfederal judge this week permanentlybarred the government from im-plementing the rule.

It was anticipated that the rulingwould go into effect last February,after a drawn-out two-year debate onthe issue, but groups opposing the re-quirement intervened with court in-junctions.

The concept of a so-called "squeal"rule began in the summer of 1981when a report by Congress statedthat recipients of federal grants forFamily Planning Services should en-courage participants to "include theirfamilies in counseling and involvethem about services."

From April, 1982 until January,1983 no action was taken on the pro-posed rule. Then Richard Schweiker,former secretary of HHS, issued astatement Jan. 10 that the rulingwould be finalized Jan. 26.

However, more delays ensued.During a two month period groupswere given an opportunity to publishcomments.

The U.S. Catholic Conferencepublished an endorsement of the rule,stating that it was a "national scan-dal" that no requirement had been in-troduced earlier into the family plan'-ning program.

House foreign affairscommittee approves nukes freeze

WASHINGTON (NC)—Thousands of backers of a nuclear weapons freezewere among the first to know that the House Foreign Affairs Committee ap-proved the nuclear freeze resolution now before Congress. Rep. Jim Leach(R-Iowa), a member of the committee and a major co-sponsor of the resolution,told participants at an anti-nuclear rally in Washington March 8 that the ForeignAffairs Committee had just approved the measure 27-9. The rally was part of theMarch 7-8 Citizens Lobby for a U.S. - Soviet Nuclear Weapons Freeze. Othermembers of Congress who addressed the rally were Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.),who presented the freeze resolution before the House and Sen. Edward Kennedy(D-Mass.), the major co-sponsor of the bill in the Senate. Following the Housecommittee's approval, the bill was to go before the House floor for a full vote.

I can't remember when I firstbegan to feel that is was necessaryfor me to commit myself to non-violence completely and withoutreservation.

Certainly the idea did not spring in-to my mind over-night. I did not wakeup ;one morning and decide that I notonly had to be a non-violent person,but that I also had to begin to activelypromote non-violence as a way of lifefor others. I suppose it was a gradualprocess.

Over a period of many years,perhaps even over my entire lifetime, I have been moving in the direc-tion of total commitment to non-violence.

SOME OF MY earliest recollec-tions vividly reveal ,the problems Ihad with violence. Tension existedwithin me growing out of the am-biguity of being on the one hand ared-blooded American boy and on theother hand a member of a minority ina nation which has always tended todiscrimninate against its minorities.

As a red-blooded American youth, Iwas enamored of guns and all thatthe Western folklore portrayed withregard to their use in a machoculture.

On the other hand, I knew some ofthe disadvantages of being a Hispanicyouth growing up in Texas, wherediscrimination against Hispanics fre-quently took the form of violentrepression.

Even my military service in the Se-

cond World War was colored by acertain ambiguity of feeling. On theone hand I was convinced of the evil.of the Nazi campaign of worlddomination and of the necessity ofdefending my Country and the freeworld from Nazi agression.

But on the other haiid I was nothappy about my direct involvement inkilling.

In the war I was a flight engineer ina B-17 bomber and flew 32 missionsover Germany. Whatever elation I

At that time Mohandas K. Gandiwas very much in the news as he car-ried on his campaign of civil disobe-dience against the English colonialauthority in India.

I was then a skinny, brown-skinnedyouth who must have looked morethan a little like the Indian leader. Iwas always offended by being calledthat name hut, in retrospect, the

association may have served to in-crease my already latent feelingsabout the value of non-violence as away of life.

I have always admired MohandasK. Gandhi.

Another recollection I have is of theimpact which the narrative of the en-counter of our Lord Jesus Christ withthe Pharisees and the woman takenin adultery - as related in the eighthchapter of the Gospel of St. John -had on me from my earliest'years.

THE REVELATION of JesusChrist as a non-violent, forgiving per-son is clearly presented in this nar-rative. While it is true that the realdefendant in this instance was-ourLord Himself - if He condemned thewoman, the Pharisees could havereported Him to the Romanauthorities as having incited a mob tocommit murder, and if He orderedthe woman to be released, thePharisees could have discredited Himin the eyes of the majority of Jews,who would have been scandalized byHis tacit approval of adultery.

Our Lord could have avoided thetrap set for him by the Pharisees byresponding to them that if they wereso sure of the law and of the facts inthe case they should do what the lawrequired of them as good Jews; asPilate did later in his own case. Buthe did not.

I was seized by more than thedrama of the story. I was seized bythe image of Christ as a non-violentperson. Christ did not condemn.

Throughout my lif e I have struggl-ed to be a non-violent person. Non-violent in thought, word and deed. Ihave not always succeeded.

Like St. Paul I can say, as he wrotein his letter to the Philippians:

. ; "Itisnot that I have reached it yet, or havealready finished my course; but I amracing to grasp the prize if possiblesince I have been grasped by .ChristJesus."

I am confident that for the re-mainder of my life I will continue tohave to struggle. I will continue tohave to struggle to forgive. I willhave to struggle to condemn the sinbut not the sinner.

As we enter on the fifth week ofour Lenten observance we would dowell to devote this week to focusingupon the extent to which we are trulynon-violent persons; the extent towhich we are compassionate andforgiving persons; the extent towhich we share that great hope whichJesus Christ Himself has instilled inus and which will enable us to over-come successfully our weak humannature and its conflicting demands.

Mass of the Resurrection wascelebrated Monday at Biscayne Col-lege for Augustinian Father Chris-tian A. Retera, who died in his sleepMarch 11 at the age of 77.

Auxiliary Bishops John J. Nevinsand Agustin Roman were principal

celebrants of the Mass in the collegewhere Father Retera had been a pro-fessor of English Literature since1960.

A native of Antwerp, he hadstudied for the priesthood and wasordained in Holland.

A trip to Haitiand a smile from the pope

Dearly beloved:

Here I am again. In the clouds.Literally! Aboard Eastern's air bus,31,000 feet up, winging the wayhome from Haiti and the exhilaratingexperience of the Holy Father's visitto that poor country.

The greatest thrill was standing atthe airport, with a black sea of flagswaving in rhythm, as the giantAlitalia airliner bearing the papalcoat of arms settled on the runwayand majestically taxied up to thereviewing stand.

As the tears welled up in my eyes, Idid not know which was the greateremotion—welcoming this in-defatigable apostle of peace, love andjustice as he knelt to kiss Haitian soil,or the dramatic awareness that,despite its troubles, humankind is in-stinctively dedicated to goodness andwill demonstrate that commitmentoverwhelmingly when given an op-portunity, such as a visit from theman who represents their ideals.

HIS HOLINESS was first escortedby the President of Haiti and his wifeto a Haitian army band which playedthe Vatican State anthem and theHaitian national anthem. Presidentand Mrs. Duvalier then escorted HisHoliness to a platform where thePresident read a welcoming greeting.Significantly, he announced he wasrenouncing a right from a historicVatican covenant to approve thenaming of bishops.

After His Holiness responded, hegreeted the cardinals, the Haitianbishops, members of the diplomaticcorps and other representatives ofthe people and was then escorted to atemporary sacristy at the airport tovest for Mass.

I anticipated His Holiness' pathand situated myself along the way, soI had an opportunity to greet him ashe went by on behalf of the Ar-chdiocese of Miami, at which he smil-ed.

The Eucharist was celebrated onthe closed airfield. We bishops wereinvited to join the procession to thespecial platform adorned in yellowand white.

I felt somewhat clerically undress-ed. Again my bag was lost—not byEastern but by the Hospitality Com-mittee on my arrival (I found it justbefore returning!).

I borrowed what vestments I wore,but was without a white miter and azucchetto (purple beanie).

THE CROWDS of joyful flag-waving, singing Haitians wereradiant-faced as though seeing a vi-

sion. Especially lovely were the blackand white sisters in their whitehabits, their veils blowing in thewind, and their weathered lay mis-sioner colleagues—beautifulwitnesses to the Gospel in this land ofpoverty.

Among the Haitian and foreignpriests and visitors' present wereFather Thomas Wenski, of ourCatholic Haitian Center, FatherEmilio Vallina, of St. John BoscoChurch, and Father Pablo Navarro,my aid—all of our Archdiocese.

The liturgy, as well as the ar-rangements and decorations alongthe avenues of the city, reflected thesimple joy and dignity and grace ofthe Haitian people. Their joy in thepope's visit was expressed by a dou-ble national holiday and a week offfrom school for the children.

DURING THE MASS, con-celebrated with the bishops andpriests present and before a greatthrong of Haitians, the Holy Fatherspoke of the Eucharist (his visit cameat the closing of a Eucharistic Con-gress),.and of the need for change.

He spoke pointedly of the problemsof Haiti, of the need for this firstblack democracy to renew its dedica-tion/to human rights, of the need ofthose*in positions of political respon-sibility and "of the wealthy and'of allwho work in peace to relieve the prob-lems of poverty, hunger, inadequatehousing, unemployment and lack ofrespect for the equal rights of all.

For me, another high point of thevisit was the recessional through thecrowd, all singing a speciallyprepared lilting song—"You arehere, we are here; it is a greatfeast!"—which they had learned byradio to salute the Pope.

As we bishops processed,thousands of hands reached out toshake ours in a beautiful expressionof thanks and joyous internationallove. ' . ' • . .

AFTER THE MASS, the inex-haustible pope rode the"Popemobile" through the city tomake a state visit to the President's

palace. He then went to the cathedralto open a Conference of LatinAmerican Bishops (CELAM) meetingin Port-au-Prince.

The bishops who addressed HisHoliness there apologized for thetreatment he had received inNicaragua.

His Holiness, in his remarks, com-plimented and encouraged the some700 bishops of Latin America fortheir zeal and distinctive Puebla ef-forts in evangelization.

Our Holy Father spoke specially ofthe need for emphasis on ministry toyouth and to the family, forcatechesis and lay involvement in theChurch. In speaking of the impor-tance of evangelization, he mention-ed that what is new about evangeliza-tion in our time is its ardor, methodand expression.

The pope concluded his Haiti visitwith a reception and dinner for thebishops and His Holiness' staff at thenew Nunciature (Apostolic Delega-tion). Archbishop Luigi Conti is thenuncio. The building is located in themountains and has a spectacular viewof Port-au-Prince below.

Father Navarro and Father Vallinawere especially interested, since theyhad assisted Archbishop Conti insecuring in Miami some neededmaterials and furniture for the newbuilding.

At the reception, I had the oppor-tunity to greet His Holiness on behalfof the Bishops of the United States,whom I represented, and to tell himthat we of the Archdiocese of Miamiare hoping that he will visit us soon(wouldn't that be great!)

LATER, CHATTING with someof the priests and laymen who accom-panied His Holiness, I got the impres-sion that we of Miami can expect avisit from the Holy Father.

Two of the priests were on the staffof Vatican Radio. They set tip at theNunciature a shortwave transmissionof the event.

The head Master of Ceremonies is' an Irish priest. He was feeling theheat of the Caribbean.

All of the staff seemed exhaustedat the end of this final visit and anx-ious to get to the airplane for the mid-night departure. From a Bishop ofCosta Rica I learned that, on return-ing from the Nicaragua visit, the Ho-ly Father went directly to a chapel topray in reparation for the distur-bances during his Mass. I also learnedthat the public address system hadbeen manipulated in Nicaragua todistort the words of His Holiness andweaken the reaction of the people,

while amplifying the Voices of thedissenters.

There was a feeling that the recep-tion of other Latin American coun-tries was all the warmer in amendsfor the Nicaraguan behavior.

It was generally felt that the Hai-tian reception was one of thewarmest. I was relieved that all wentso well, especially since I had learnedconfidentially that Interpol hadreasons to expect trouble in Haiti.

FATHER NAVARRO and I en-joyed the exquisite hospitality ofWilhelm Frish and his son Peter (nowstudying at the University of Miami)and his daughter Vicky (now a stu-dent of Barry University) while inPort-au-Prince.

The Frisch Family is an oldGerman-French family who havebeen in Haiti for generations. Theirhome is at an elevation of 3,500 feetin the mountains and part of a clusterof homes, including those of Mr.Frisch's lovely mother-in-law, Mrs.Deschamps, and of his marriedchildren.

Mr. Frisch is in the printingbusiness. His company printed the1.5 million flags used for the papalvisit. He. gave us valued insights intoHaiti and the lives of the people heloves.

He believes in social benefits andtraining and adequate pay for hissome 250 employees. He has been ex-perimenting with reforestation andplant and animal breeding. He urgesfewer expensive studies and morepractical programs in foreign aid toHaiti, such as drilling of wells,reforestation, union of groups offarmers to market their products andreceive counsel from agronomists.

He feels the need in Port-au-Princefor an American Catholic academy asan alternative to the other privatenative schools now educating thefuture leaders of Haiti.

The visit to Haiti was a marvelousadventure with brothers and sistersof another nation but of our oneFaith, joyfully welcoming our Fatherin Christ come to bring non-violentpeace, justice, encouragement andblessings.

Isn't it great to be a member of theCatholic Church!

Cancer-stricken priest'I will behold God'

Dressed in his street clothes, youmight suspect that James Kreitner isa basketball player. He towers over6'3" and casts a giant shadow. But heis Fr. James Kreitner—the priest.Any points he scores are for God.

He is now involved in the mostimportant game of his life. Fr.Kreitner has inoperable cancer.While the mere thought of such anillness sends most people into a stateof panic and terror, the 33-year-oldpriest is calm about his misfortune.

Last November, when the cancerspread to his vocal chords, forcinghim to talk in a whisper and give upthe singing he loves, he continued tolive his life in what he calls, "joyfulwitness."

"I just prayed that. God wouldteach me how to sing in new ways,"he says. . : .--: *

CHEMOTHERAPY treatmentsare agonizing and painful. Fr.Kreitner puts the good days in bet-ween to use. He wrote an essay onredemption and is currently planningto write another one on reconcilia-tion.

At his small apartment and office'at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary inBoynton Beach, he collects words ofwisdom by theologians like ThomasMerton and copies them on whiteindex cards. His own special thoughtsalso fill dozens of cards.

Prior to his illness, he was activefor 8 years in his work at theseminary. He has most recently beeninvolved in helping older students inthe formation of their Christian lifeand teaching them"to appreciate thegifts God gives them so they canchange and grow," he says.

Helping others develop spirituallyhas been the handiwork of his life. Byage 12, he had already entered theseminary and was experienced indealing with Seminole Indians,migrant workers and underprivilegedblacks.

His deeply religious familyencourage him every step of the wayuntil the day he donned the collar.

"AT FIRST I thought social workwas the only channel I needed toreach people. . . but all along I keptfeeling I could give them somethingmore, besides human enrichment. Iwanted to give them God. I turned tothe Church because they hadresources concerned with the wholeperson and I could do so much morethrough them."

Because of his background ineducation and love for children, Fr.Kreitner was assigned as priest-principal at St. Mary's CathedralSchool in Miami. It was the beginningof a lasting relationship between thegentle priest and many of thestudents.

He smiles broadly as he looks at thewristwatch he wears. It could neverbe displayed in a Timex commercial,but to Fr. Krietner it is a treasuresuitable for King Solomon's mines.

"One day there were five boys from6th and 7th grades who got in •trouble. I read them the riot act, inwhat I thought was a fatherlyfashion. . . but they seemed reallyangry. The next day they gave me the

theywatch and a beautiful card,had planned it for months."

There were lighter moments ofcourse. A second grader was makinghis first confession. He gazedsolemnly at Fr. Kreitner and said, "Ihave commited adultery, Father."

Fr. Kreitner raised his eyesheavenwards.

"How did this happen, son?""I touched a girl on the shoulder in

class. . ". isn't that adultery?"

OTHER MEMORIES are trig-gered by the plaques on his walls,given to him by students and inscrib-ed with such affectionate words as"with love and devotion."

Many students from St. Mary's •are still in contact with Fr. Krietner.When word got out that he washospitalized and about to undergosurgery, they flocked to his bedsideand lined up in the hall, at least 30of them. They visit him frequently atthe seminary, and his drawer is full ofcards and letters.

Despite his intense love forchildren, he does not regretsacrificing marriage and family to beon God's team. He spends time withnieces and nephews from the familiesof eight brothers and sisters who livenearby in Fort Lauderdale.

"The celibate life has a purpose.The beauty of it is that I can have apart in the lives of my students andother children and give them all ofme. I've never felt celibacy to be aburden, but my gift to people."

THROUGH YEARS of counselingpeople, Fr. Kreitner has discoveredsome important truths.

'After I got cancer, Iwas able to 90 beyondasking, "Why me?" andreach out to God ... tomake the commitmentinstead of turning awaywhen I need Him themost. He will be mystrength and I will en-dure it gracefully.'

Married people, he says, havetrouble looking for the good in eachother. They also have trouble makingcommitments. And business peoplecan't make a commitment to theircompanies or their employers.

If we learn to make commitments,marriages and business will besuccessful. This also applies to ourrelationship with God.

"After I got cancer, I was able togo beyond asking, 'why me?' andreach out to God. . . to make thecommitment instead of turning awaywhen I need Him the most, he will bemy strength and I will endure itgracefully."

Fr iends throughout theArchdiocese are also helping Fr.

Krietner endure his difficulties. Ayear ago, Auxiliary Bishop JohnNevins and Archbishop EdwardMcCarthy arranged for Fr. Krietnerto meet with the Pope at the Vatican.It happened that President Reaganalso was there for a visit.

" I t was an ' unforget tableexperience. . . fantastic," beams Fr.Krietner.

What of the future—has he no fearof his adversary?

"If I fear anything, it is separationfrom loved ones. But I don't feardeath, even though it couldn't becloser to me than this. When deathcomes I will behold God."

So far, the score is: Fr. Krietner,100. Cancer, 0.

the name of God.In El Salvador, rightists and leftists slaughter innocent people

and demand that the Church approve.Here at home, conservative Catholics claim God wants us arm-

ed to our nuclear teeth while liberal ones say He calls them todamage the cones of missiles.

In every corner of the globe, self-righteous people of everypolitical and religious persuasion claim the Lord supports theirearthly cause, agrees with their most petty views and condemnsthose blasphemous enough to disagree.

Could Christianity have failed so miserably? Or is their wayChristianity? .

For Christ never preached any revolution but a spiritual one.He never spoke of a change in government, no matter how muchbetter it would be. He pleaded for a change of heart. And theonly demonstration Christ ever led was His own march toCalvary.

During his ministry, in fact He disappointed many who wantedfreedom from Rome. Instead of the warrior Messiah they ex-pected, He came as a gentle teacher who spoke in parables and

EDITORIALallowed Himself to be nailed to a cross.

The Christ found in the New Testament would anger the San-dinistas by not condemning U.S. agression and rejecting the no-tion of a Christian-Marxist church.

He would call Guatemalan President Rios Montt a hypocrite forkilling in God's name.

He would tell those jn El Salvador resisting efforts at socialjustice that they are like camels trying to enter the needle's eyeof the Kingdom.

Like Pope John Paul II, He would exhort his followers to faithin His true Church and a daily, personal effort to live His com-mandment: "Love one another as I have loved you."

Which is not to say, of course, that some things shouldn't bechanged. Poverty and injustice everywhere must be decried anderadicated. Millions must not starve while wealthy Christianswaste their "daily bread." Bloody violence must cease.

But Christ, in effect, said the solution to these wordly pro:

blems lies inside us. .His way is not clenched fists and revolution any more than it

is killing guerrillas and suspected Communists.Unjust governments flow from unjust hearts, He tells us.

Poverty is bred by human selfishness. Justice monies only when

men and women cease to seek revenge.Find God and spiritual perfection first, he promises, "and all

the rest will follow."Pray that someday we will learn His lesson.

Children at Mass worth the troubleI have been reading The Voice for

many years, and for the most parthave enjoyed each and every issue. Arecent story, however, alarmed me.The story concerning taking childrento Mass by Hilda Young, I'm sure,was meant to be funny. However, herclosing sentence about Protestants,Sunday school and the new Code ofCanon Law disheartened me im-mensely.

I have just become a practicingCatholic again, after several yearsaway from the Church. The last yearwas one filled with crisis and despair.It got to the point where I seriouslybegan to question the faith I was rais-ed in, and I started attending aPresbyterian Church. The peoplewere warm and friendly. I wasalmost at the point of joining theChurch, but several factors held meback.

One of those factors was thenoticeable absence of children attheir religious service. Yes, I mustadmit that sometimes I am distractedby the cries of infants while attendingMass each Sunday, but then I began

to realize that these children havejust as much right to be there as wedo. They are children of God throughBaptism, part of the parish, and Ithink longingly of someday beingblessed enough to be able to attendMass with a husband and a little oneof my own.. Even though infants and childrenhave no conception of what is goingon,, at least they can become awareand accustomed to those certainspecial times where a lot of peopleget together under one roof as onebig family, responding to the priest,listening to hymns, and moments ofsilence.

No one is ever too young or too oldto attend Mass. We are all "Childrenof God" and our presence each weekin the freedom of worship is aprivilege open to all. The Pro-testants can keep their Sundaysehool. I for one love the presence ofchildren at Mass. I can't wait to bringmy own to Mass someday.

and Teens," March 4, is beautiful butthere is still another sad situationthat should be corrected. That is theway many of the parents of theseteens treat their elderly parents.

We are elderly parents and knowfrom speaking to other elderlyparents that they are unhappybecause their children rarely visitthem and keep them in the darkabout so many things taking place intheir homes and lives.

Our children are very good to usand to their own children but as far aswe are concerned there is nocommunication, which hurts usimmensely. Our children are veryactive in their church with MarriageEncounter and many organizations,but we are left out of so many things.

Couldn't something be startedwithin the Church to remedy thisvery sad situation, to bring the youngparents closer to their own elderlyparents? We ask for nothing but alittle recognition.

The lesson of Cross-bearingThere is one lesson that every Catholic was

taught early and frequently, but seldomremembers - the lesson on bearing crosses- Now Idon't want to sound like Aunt Cynthia, who solvesall problems by raising her eyes to heaven andmurmuring it's God's will and allows no morediscussion on the problem.

It's not that simplistic. However, even littlechildren - at least in the past - are taught that beinga follower of Jesus means more than just believinghim and quoting his teaching. As he gets older, helearns that for' some mysterious reason he has tocarry a cross, whatyever that means.

As time goes on he finds out thatr Jesus defineda follower as one who takes up his cross, denieshimself and looks constantly for his footsteps. It allsounds so terribly pious and unrealistic. What isthis, "Take up your cross ...?"

TAKE A day out of your life, any day.

Something upsets your plans or badly interrruptsyour work? Tough luck? No, the cross! Or you wakeup feverish and realize you have the flu, just whenyou had a big day planned. Or your car sits in aparking lot while you shop and sports a big dentwhen you come out, and no slip of the culprit'sname under the windshield wiper. Or someone whojust doesn't like you spreads a tale that was notdesigned to better your reputation.

You answer that bloody phone at 2 a.m. and talkto a drunk who has the wrong number. You wakeup in the intensive care unit and when you aretuned in, your sympathetic doctor informs you thatyou had a coronary thrombosis.

That's enough. What are all these, incidents? Thecross that Jesus had in mind_when he predicted hisfaithful followers would take up their cross daily.Of course, this is not the way we pictured the crossat all. We didn't exactly picture it in a setting ofsoft music and low lights, but what hare all theseunrelated incidents which interfere with our plans

anything that keeps us from having our own wayand offers opposition to our carefully worked outplans. It usually looks like and^ccident, a piece ofbad luck, something that may even, have surprisedGod, and we are almost always inclined to treat it

. as such. •We are indeed, unless we nave learned the bitter

lesson of cross-bearing. It is a very tough lesson toget through our pores and into the soul. We fight itall the way. We have to fo contrary to our damagedhuman nature. The apostles were not up to doingthat, even after all the teachings of Jesus and hispredictions about his death and resurrection. Theysaw the tragedy of Calvary as only a tragedy. In noway could the murder of an innocent man becomethe sole source of peace and happiness for alleternity. What the Jewish leaders and the Romanscombined to do was neyer to be matched in cruelty.Nothing would ever be more frustrating or useless.

Or so it looked. We are so much like the apostles_ before Pentecost. Each time we are a victim of an

unexpected hardship, we consider it unnecessary,of course, and just as unpoductive. There is achorus of "Why me?" Each such situation seemslike a genuine setback. Our card house is blowndown.

HOW DO we get over this non-Christian view?Let me make a couple of suggestions. First, we

' have to realize we usually put the emphasis on thewrong features of ;the life of Jesus. We love hisrole as Teacher and active worker among the sickand poor and oppressed. And we forget that, asArchbishop Fulton Sheen used to say, all mencome into the world to live. Only one came in todie.

Jesus primarily came to suffer and die and rise.Moreover, we find it so hard to believe and

accept that God has his own plan for our salvation.Most of us are foolish enough to believe we areplanning our own lives and mapping out ourdestiny. And it would appear so, if the cross did notcome into ourlives every day. And We don'trecognize it ...

LOOK BACK. Remember the "terrible thingsthat happened some years ago and we felt onedegree or another of defeat or misery. And now wecan indeed look back and see the unwantedhappening in the context of what happened later,and we realize, to use an overworked work, it wasa blessing in disguise.

All these seemingly miserable events were thevcross.: Yes, we are living out someone else's plan, thankGod. If we had to live out our own, we'd quicklybecome unglued and taste the bitterness ofdespair. God uses crosses as the shepherd uses hiscrook - to point the way, to guide gently,, to givereassurance we are being watched, to prod us intodoing our duty sometimes.

Holy Week should help us to treatr the crosses inour life without surprise and dismay. What aglorious lesson to learn.

The centrifugal machineWhen I was a boy, our favorite family excursion

was a visit to the Cincinnati zoo. I t was anadventure from riding the incline on the street carthat took us to the zoo, through the zoo with itsvariety of animals to the fun house near the exitgate.

The zoo fun house wasn't like those ofamusement parks, it was more like a biggymnasium. There were slides and buckingwalkways and big rolling drums to walk through -and there was the centrifugal machine. It was myfavorite because I figured it out when I was just alittle kid and I used to get on it, watch "as otherswent sliding off into the padded area around it andfeel a pride as I heard grownups say, "Hey, did yousee how that little kid stayed on the centrifugalmachine."

And in the last couple of decades of the history ofthe Church, I've been thinking about thecentrifugal machine and the lesson it might offer toCatholics.

First of all, let me explain what the centrifugalmachine was - maybe you knew it by an othername. It was a huge flat plate, varnished wood ontop, maybe 40 feet in diameter. People got on it,then it would start revolving the way a phonographrecord does., It started slowly, as it speeded uppeople started sliding off its slick surface until

. finally it moved so fast that almost everyone slidoff into the cushioned area beyond it. I learned tostay on, no matter how fast it went.

What you needed to do to stay on the centrifugalmachine was to station yourself close to the center.As you felt yourself sliding you threw your arms orlegs or moved your weight in a. circular fashiontoward the center, tried to distribute the pullaround the entire circumference so the verycentrifugal force worked to hold you in position. Itwas some thing a little boy could do. But the keywas keeping close to the center.

What does that have to do with the Church andCatholics? Well, I've observed that in the lastcouple of decades in the history of the Church thatthose movements and individuals that move fromthe center of the Church, whether- to the right orleft, risk being sloughed from the Church.

I'm not saying uniformity preserves beingCatholic. I'm not talking about uniformity at all.There is no reason there cannot be diversity withinthe unity of the Church. The spectrum of attitudeswithin the Church can be wide but diversity mustnever lose contact with the center of unity.

That center of unity can be found in thesuccessor to Peter and the Apostles, the Pope and

the bishops. Movements or individuals that claimto be Catholic but would ignore or demean theimportance of the Pope will, with the speeding oftime, simply slide away from the Church and ceasebeing Catholic. Parishoners who, dissatisfied withtheir bishop, establish a parish outside hisauthority may be sincere but inevitably they willfind themselves further and further away from theChurch until finally they are not Catholics at all.

I'm not saying that in these situations thesegroups or individuals are disconnected from theChurch by decisions made by the Church todisavow them. Rather it is by their own momentumthat they are cast off, cut off from the center ofunity, they simply slide further and further away.

When I say this contact with the center of unityis necessary, I am not saying that the goodCatholic must be commtted to silent obeisnace toeverything the hierarchy says. There is a properrole for dissent within unity. But being Catholicrequires a recognition that this is a visible Churchwith a center of unity in the successor of Peter andthe successors of the Apostles. Committed to this,the Catholic may be conservative or progressiveand know he or she remains firmly Catholic.

Grandparents are among the clear-cut victims of asociety in which families break up at a fast. pace. I'veheard a sad tale many times from grandparents. It tellshow the animosity between spouses spilled over toinclude the spouses' parents. Vindictive former partnersgo on to deprive the next generation—their children—ofthe richness of contact with their grandparents..

Fortunately, grandparents have not taken thisinjustice, lying down. Many precedents have now beenset for them to take legal action when they are deprivedof the opportunity to #feit their grandchildren.

Grandparent visitation rights first became a legalissue as far back as 1966. That was the year the state ofNew York passed legislation allowing grandparents toseek court-ordered visitation, or even custodial, rights incase of the death or divorced of their children.,

A§ words got around that grandparents did have avoice, other states took action. By 1972, laws similar toNew York's had been passed in 17 states. Today, 42states have such laws. In 11 of them, visitation rights donot apply in cases where the separation is due todivorce; but 31 states allow grandparent visitation (andcustodial) rights after either the death or divorce of theiradult children. ' • • . . . -

However, while all this is a giant step in the rightdirection, it is not automatically restoring contactbetween grandparents and their grandchildren. In asurvey of 300 children last year by authors Kenneth

Woodward and Arthur Kornhaber, only 5 percent ofchildren interviewed said they had close, regular contactwith their grandparents.

The others cited their parents' divorce, remarriage, orliving too far away, as reasons why. they saw little oftheir grandparents. Most interesting, few were pleasedor indifferent about this. Many expressed hurt andanger.

. The authors commented, "The bond betweengrandparents and grandchildren is second in emotionalpower and influence, only to the relationship betweenparents and children." They concluded, "They don't domuch. Their happiness comes from being together."

The laws that give legal standing to visitation rightsfor grandparents symbolize a significant and positivechange in American attitudes toward grandparents, inthe opinion of a sociologist who studied familyrelationships. Apparently many grandparents in the past decade anda half have felt the same. Because of their courage inseeking a mature solution to an unjust situation thatdeprives them of their rightful relationship with theirgrandchildren, attention has been focused on thisproblem. Fortunately, the legal system has seen thewisdom of their position, at least in 42 states.

Of life and deathA few years ago I wrote about a friend of mine named

"Rosie' whom I have visited nearly every Sunday for 10years. Though 89,and dying of cancer, she refuses to behospitalized. She doesn't want to be subjected to whatshe considers unnecessary pain and medical expense.However, I'm not writing about Rosie; I'm writingabout her daughter-in-law, Denise, who is no l6nger incontrol of her own destiny.

More than a year ago, Diane Denise Roswell, a44-year-old nurse from Ramsey, N.J. a mother of threeand the wife of a high school math teacher, choked whileeating. She went into convulsions, and sank intounconsciousness. Within 20 minutes she had been taken

This is not my first experience with such things. I amfriendly with Karen Quinlan's parents and have-visited.Karen many times sjnce 1975 when she fell into herirreversible coma. Karen is almost 27 now and has beenkept alive through artificial life-support methods formore than six years.- A comdtose person is not necessarity a sleepingbeauty. I have visited both Karen and Denise and haveseen each one crying hysteric aJly,>.as' though pleading tobe left to die in peace. One feels so helpless.

A. About 10 miles from where I livethere is a large public high school. Itsstudent body is divided into just thethree groups you mention. Some ofmy young friends there wrestle withthe same problem you do.

The problem really is this! How canyou make your personal declarationof independence? How can you setyourself free to be yourself, theper-son God earnestly desires you to be?

Worth repeating now is an incidentI wrote about nearly a year ago.Fifteen-year-old Moira was at ateenage party where beer abounded -with the parent's consent.

Moira later laughed about the partyand said, "I'd bet $10 that half thekids there drank beer just becausethey thought it was the thing to doand not because they really wantedto. I searched around in the fridge forsome Pepsi and drank that andnobody laughed at me or put medown."

Consider carefully the idea thatyour world might not come to anend if you don't become a jock or afreak or a preppie.

The sky won't fall in if you say"No," not.even if you say it loudly.

..Indeed your life may have a newbeginning as you slowly developqualities of leadership.

Yes, there may be some verbal jabs,some razzing, even some foul insults.But are people who needle and insultyou and others the type of - personsyou want for friends? Does the opi-nion of such people even matter?.Declaring your independence may

be a little scary at first, and unsettl-ing and even strange experience.Perhaps you could begin in smallways, just as a weight lifter beginswith the lighter weights and workshis'way up to the heavy ones.

Companions to Jive part time or full time in thehome with partially incapacitated older personsare an excellent alternative to nursing home care.They can relieve the children of part of the burdenof caring for an older family member.

Your mother's desire to remain in her own homemay be important to her feelings of self-worth and

her need to stay in control of her time and life. Alive-in companion would allow her to maintain herhealth and safety in the home, and at the sametime continue to be "her own woman." You wouldbe freed of the worry that you might be forcing her

•into residential care that she does not fully need orthe fear that while alone she will hurt herself, insome way.

Locating a companion who is mutuallysatisfactory to all parties may seem anoverwhelming task. There are, however, manyplaces to look.

Newspapers would be the most obvious. Placingwant-ads may result in inquiries by qualifiedcompanions. Also, local government employmentoffices and private job-placement agencies will bewilling to carry your listing and attempt to findsomeone with the skills and compassion that yourmother needs.

Try the personnel office of your local nursinghome. There often are part-time people on staffwho are looking for additional work. Contact thelocal branch of your Councils on the Aged andAging. They may help you uncover a potentiallyfine live-in. Agencies that provide visiting homenursing may also know of qualified companionswho, are unemployed.

Talk to the priests and ministers in your area andmake your needs known. Don't overlook your localmental health center and office of occupational

development. Their staffs0 contain professionalswho do career counseling and may know anappropriate person. .

Live-in companions can provide the manyservices of a homemaker—not simply dressing andcooking as you request, but practical nursing care,laundry, light housekeeping, chauffering and evenan occasional card game. There are surely womenin our communities with these skills. •

Many types of compensation are possible.Salaries may be paid in money or in room andboard, or often in a combination of both. Live-incompanions will still want time off each week.Many individual arrangements can be made. Fromyour letter, it sounds as though you would be gladto fill in a few days each week'.

As our population becomes more and moreelderly, the focus will shift to provide moregeriatric services. In the future, agencies willprobably be set up to find live-in companions forsenior citizens who wish to remain in their ownhomes but need some aid. Good luck in your searchfor a companion for your mother. You may beahead of your time.

Lent V:'Why have you forsaken me"I used to believe in God," she said as she

twisted nervous fingers. "But when he took Alanlike that, for no reason at all, I found I couldn'tforgive him. It was so senseless. A loving Godwouldn't do a thing like that." Resentment shonein her misty eyes as she spoke of her twenty year-old son's tragic death, victim of a drunken drive.

How many times have we heard a statement likehers? Of the Seven Words spo en by Jesus on thecross, this is probably the most felt and invoked byus. So ofter in life we ask God why He has forsakenus - when a loved one dies, when a job is lost, whena child is born deformed, when war exacts itshuman tragedy, when natural disasters occur,when loneliness becomes unbearable.

How can a loving God do these things to hispeople, we cry. We want to rage out at the invisibleperpetrator of tragedy and God is often thehandiest to blame;

But we rarely stop to realize that we areforsaking t5od when we accuse him of forsakingus. He never promised us an endlessly happy lifehere but he invited us to trust him. When we givehim up because life doesn't go according to ourplan, -we're a little different from the child whosays, "If I don't get my way, I won't love youanymore."

How, then, are we to interpret Jesus' cry to hisfather? Wasn't HE accusing him of abandoning

him? On the contrary, Jesus was quoting from aneloquent psalm of hope, written by his forebearer,the prophet David. His appeal to the psalms at thetime of his agonizing death tells us that not onlywas he familiar with them but also his was a prayerof triumph, not despair. In spite of its openinglines, Psalm 22 is a prayer praising God fordeliverance.

Let's reflect of the first few verses:

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?Far from my prayer, from the words of my cry?0 my God, I cry out by day, and you answer not;by night, and there is no relief for me.Yet you are enthrowned in the holy place0 glory of Israel'In you our fathers trusted;they trusted and you delivered them.

To you they cried and they escaped;In you they trusted, and they were not put to .shame."

Jesus' cry of abandonment was a reminder tohim and to us that even though we may feelforsaken by God in our bleakest moments, we willbe delivered if we continue to trust. And if we findit hard to trust in God at dark times in our lives,imagine what it was for Jesus. His own peoplecalled for his death. He was betrayed by Judas,denied by Peter, abandoned by all but his womenand .one of his men at the cross.

Scripture scholar Ronald Cox wrote that byinspiring King David to write these psalms athousand years earlier, the Holy Spirit preparedtwo perfect prayers for Jesus on the cross."Undoubtedly he kept saying them over and overduring the three hours," Cox wrote. (The other"perfect prayer" referred to is, "into thy hands, Icommend my spirit," which will be discussed nextweek.)

These words are another deathbed gift fromJesus, urging us neither to feel forsaken nor toforsake God in our most despairing moments but tocontinue to trust in him because he loves us as afather and will not abandon our cries.

Whenthe candle is finished, burn it to thepresent age of the birthday person.

Every year it is burned on theperson's birthday. Each familymember thanks God for the honoredone and names his or her talents aswell as asks for special blessings forthe birthday person in the coming-year.

LENT V - REASONS FOR HOPEReadings: Isaiah 43:16-21; Philippians 3:8-14; John 8:1-11

Time flies by oh winged feet. Hereit is the fifth week of Lent already;only two more Sundays and we shallcelebrate the glory of Easter. As welook back over the past four weekswe find little to boast of over our per-formance during this penitentialseason. Today's readings howevergive us solid reasons for hope and im-provement in the future.

Discouragement*® a common ex-perience. It arises whenever we findourselves faced v/ith an unpleasantsituation.-No one likes that. Whenthe situation appears to be more thanwe can handle, the stage is set forfear and despair, and we are temptedto give up.

GREAT AND MANY are thereasons for a more positive attitudetoward the difficulties of life. TheScriptures are a gold mine of hope.Listen to the exciting voice of Isaiah.Fifty years of Exile have finally cometo an end, unexpectedly. Isaiah sangof the Return as of a new Exodus, aliberation from degrading servitude."Lo, I am doing something new!"

says the Lord. Indeed He was. ForJews even today, the Exodus is thereally great event in the history ofIsrael.

Another powerful, exciting voiceis heard in the letter to the Philip-peans. Paul, a hard man dedicated topersecuting all followers Of the new"Way" of Christ, had come in a blin-ding flash of light to know the sur-passing knowledge of Jesus Christ.From that moment on, he was willingto put up with anything; nothing mat-tered more to him than to knowChrist and the power of His resurrec-tion.

EVERYTHING may have changedfor Paul when Jesus came into hislife, but he was not thereby exemptedfrom working amid difficulties. Hedescribes his life as a race in which hewas running hard,, aiming at the prizeof all prizes, life on high in ChristJesus.

St. John relates the - story ofwoman taken in adultery and broughtto Jesus to be judged. Jesus' enemies

tried every possible way to trap anddiscredit Him. If He agreed that thiswoman should be put to death, Hewould run afoul of the Roman law;the Romans had reserved the deathpenalty to themselves. On the otherhand, if He had allowed the woman togo scot free, He would be accused ofdisregard for the Law of Moses^which demanded death(Deuteronomy 22:22-24)

WITH. HIS USUAL extraordinarycomposure, Jesus simply said, "Lethim who is without sin cast the firststone." Then He stooped to write onthe ground, and the woman's"judges" silently slunk away. Jesusthen said to the woman: "Neither doI condemn thee. Go now, and sin nomore."

In these episodes, we find groundsfor encouragement. Jesus' resurrec-tion is for us" what the Exodus was-isfor the Jews, only more so. Paul's im-age of a race does not (thank God!)apply to us physically; for most of us,.that kind of runnng is over. Butspiritually we must be always grow-

ing. "Though this outer man of oursmay be falling into decay," Paulwrote (2 Cor 4:16), "the inner man isrenewed day by day."

IN LENT we are reminded of thereasons for hope. We are challengedto achieve the good, and encouragedwith the knowledge that all evils(especially our sins) can be avoided,or washed away by penance.

Our religion is admirably suited fortough and difficult situations. Itreminds us that Jesus did not say;"Your sin is all right with Me," butrather "Go, and sin no more." Ittakes sin seriously, and never tires ofurging us to do the same. We all cando better; we need not give in to oursinful habits but with our hand in His,we can with courage and hope facethe evils, the temptations, and dif-ficulties of daily living. The prize iswell worth the* effort, nothing lessthan a new life with the Risen Christ.

A judge wonders: Can we ever judgeQ. I am a jury trial judge and mustdecide which prospective jurorsmay be excused from serving.-Among the frequent excuses is theclaim that Jesus said, "Judgenobody and you will not bejudged."

Often it is asserted by JehovahWitnesses, but sometimes also byProtestant ministers. Recently, tomy surprise, a Catholic woman toldme the same thing. This lady wasunique, since many Catholic priestsand nuns have served as jurorscheerfully and with dedication. (Inour state no one is automatically ex-empt from jury service. Evenformer Governor Brown served ona criminal jury two years ago.)

Could you explain just whatJesus meant by this teaching andgive me some insight as to what Imight reply to people who invokethis passage? (California).

A. -The passages to. which yourefer (mainly Matthew 7:1 and Luke6:37) are always interpreted as warn-ing? against harsh and self-righteouscriticism of others, not against aclear and open stand on moral issuesthat affect society.

Jesus himself teaches this attitude;and in this he is in harmony with the

*whole of Old and New Testamenttradition. From the ancient prophets(one might particularly cite Amos,Isaiah and Jeremiah) to the Gospels,God's people have been told theymust eradicate the injustices in socie-ty that cause injury, injustice andeven death to the poor; the helplessand other innocent people.

They must not, in other words, be

neutral about what is happening.They are commanded not only to. con-demn evil done to others but to doeverything possible to eliminate thatevil from human society.

Jesus stood clearly in the spirit ofthat tradition. The Sermon on theMount, the criterion for the finaljudgment given in Matthew 25, andnumerous other occasions on whichthe Lord spoke of the responsibilityto see that justice is guaranteed for abrother who is suffering unjustly, allindicate that he was not neutral to allthis. Nor did he expect his followersto remain simply weepingbystanders.

Obviously, therefore, Jesus did notdiscourage every kind of judging inthe passages your potential jurors in-voke. The context shows that whilewe must not be vindictive and cruel,we must recognize and help societyput*an end to social injustices thatseriously disrupt our human lifetogether. '

It may help your jurors also torecognize that in' making legaljudgments we in no way pretend .todetermine how that person standspersonally with God. We have no wayof knowing a person's deepest soul

and thus no way of knowing whetheror how much that person is subjec-tively guilty of sin before God. Thatsurely is not ours to judge.

The purpose of the court is only todetermine, under proper instructionfrom the judge, whether the in-dividual is guilty before the law of thecrime of which he or she is accused.

Those are two very distinct kinds ofjudgments which not only jurors butthe rest of us need to keep clearly inmind.Q. Several months ago, inresponse to a question about the ap-paritions at Garabandal, you saidthat the church had not acceptedthe fact that the Blessed VirginMary really appeared there. Youquoted bishops back in the 1960s.

I have read much about this and Ithink the church has now statedthat the appearances did actuallytake place. It is a beautiful story,and I think you should set the factsstraight for people who may notknow about developments thatcame up after your previous col-umns.

Please let us know: Where doesthe church stand on this today?(New Jersey).

A. For readers who may not befamiliar with the background of thisquestion, the town of Garabandal isin the Diocese of Santader in Nor-thern Spain. For several months,beginning in 1961, some children ofthat area were said to have seen vi-sions of the Virgin Mary.

During these appearances Mary isreported to have repeated much ofthe message of Fatima, the need forprayers and conversion of life if

mankind is not to suffer greatly fromdisasters imminent in the world.

At least twice in recent years Ihave reported statements of thebishops of Santader during theseveral years following these allegedapparitions. In both instances thebishops, after careful investigation,indicated there was no basis forclaiming anything supernatural hap-pened at the site of the apparitions.

Because of the above question andsimilar letters I have received, Iwrote to the present bishop of San-tader, Bishop Del Val. Just a fewyears ago, In December 1977, hevisited Garabandal and met with pe-ple said to have been involved in theappearances.

Following this visit, noting that hispredecessors did not admit a super-natural character to the phenomenathat took place there, he said, "I amin agreement with these bishops, mypredecessors. I was always open incharity and without prejudice, andwill always be willing to consider anyoccurence that takes place here (inGarabandal). But in the six years thatI have been bishop of Santader, nonew phenomenon has taken place."

Bishop Del Val adverted to the sug-gestion by partisans of this shrine inmany parts of the world that a newinvestigation take place. If theVatican wishes to do this, he said, hehas no objection. He himself,however, has no reason to review theprocess, and sees no reason for aspecial commission for the Holy Seeto do so.

THE ICON of that time may beHowdy Doody, but he was only wood.His real-life counterpart (the woodenPinocchio made human) was Beaver,the boy always getting into scrapes,wondering about growing up,clashing with his brother, beingtempted by his friends and facing life.with a baseball cap cocked slightly tothe south. .

Recent TV specials'have tried torecapture that time. "Father KnowsBest" and "Gilligan's Island" havehad updatings. And now it isBeaver's turn. On March 19th, at 9p.m;, channel 4 in South Florida willair a two-hour movie entitled. "Stillthe Beaver." Returning in their

original roles will be Barbara Bill-ingsly as June the Mom, Ken Osmondas the duplicitous Eddie Haskell, 'Richard Deacon as Mr. Rutherford,Tony Dow as Wally and - all togethernow - Jerry Mathers as the Beaver.

To find out about the original seriesand the special, I talked recently withTony Dow, who began life as WallyCleaver when he was 12. Do youremember what you were doing inyour everyday routine when you were12? Neither does Dow.

"IT WAS A way of life for us," herecalled. "It was like going to school.We were up at eight and home atfive.. There was more discipline, ofcourse, because we had to learn linesbesides doing homework. But I can'tremember what most of the episodeswere about. There were 234 of them.

. When I see them now, I have no ideawhat they are about and I'm amazedat how good they are."

Good? It is popular to sneer atthose programs, to call the Cleavers,the Stones, the Andersons and theNelsons images of ideal . familieswhich never existed and which gaveunrealistic expectations to viewers.

"That's been brought up to me,"Dow said. "They say we.were a milk-and-cookies atmosphere with dad in asuit and never upset. But if you lookat the shows, you see that dad did getupset. We did not cover outlandishtopics like alcoholism or have tempertantrums. We dealt with what kids gothrough daily, human, relationshipsand the things we go through grow-ing up. My father (in real life) neveryelled at me. My friends had parentswho never yelled or beat them. So ifyou were brought up in a family situa-tion that was loving, you could relatewell to these shows."

In the special, the Beav' faces allsorts of crises: his father is dead (theactor who played him died not toolong ago), he's out of work, his wifewants a divorce and his two sons arebugging him. "I tend to be associated with theshow," he said, "but most people whocome up to me call me 'Tony' ratherthan 'Wally.' I can't do anythingabout it. I've done other shows, butpeople associate me with theBeaver."

After March 19, he hopes they con-tinue to do so if the special becomes aseries, which could happen if peoplerespond enthusiastically.

"Monsignor Quixote" is also thelatest novel by venerable story teller,Graham Greene. The centralcharacter is a humble man whodownplays his own learning andaccomplishments, sure that otherpriests have far more to offer thanhe.

Over the years, the loving priesthas tailored his pastoral. care verynicely to suit the needs of hisparishioners; What he has in spadesis a sympathetic ear and a gentlemanner. Monsignor Quixote talkspersuasively with the parishionersabout the love and goodness of Godand human beings.

MONSIGNOR Quixote doesn'tattend a myriad of meetings or havea parish council to advise him. Theonly priest in town, he is on call allthe time. He seldom takes a day off.

When Monsignor Quixote stops tothink about it, heis aware he doesn'tfind much companionship among hisparishioners. They don't turn to himfor friendship. They don't think oftheir priest as a human being withmany of the same needs they have forcompanionship and comfort.

But for the most part, themonsignor doesn't think about that.He turns for comfort to his favoritespiritual authors.......

Some priests today are openlyexpressing their need for greaterunderstanding and support. Forinstance, the priests' senate in theDiocese of Charlotte, N.C., recentlypublished a statement about the needamong priests for some regular timeaway from their duties in order tominister to people well.

Their statement was published in1982 along with a letter fromCharlotte's Bishop Michael Begley.He explained the statement is

intended to help parishioners "betterunderstand some of the tensions andpressures under which priests labor."

The North Carolina priests' senatesaid:1. People are apt to "lump allpriests together," forgetting eachpriest is a "unique human being whohas needs, habits and talents thatdiffer from those of every otherpriest."

2. Priests often are expected to beon call 24 hours a day, seven days aweek. A 60-70 hour workweek is notuncommon.

3. Priests often live and work in thesame plaee. This makes it difficult torelax and unwind since there is noclear distinction between a priest'swork time and private time.

4. Priests do not have the emotionaland physical support offered by wife

l ife in Babylon was bristling with problems forthe Jewish exiles. At first, their difficulties werethe obvious ones, homesickness, lack of materialcomforts, anxiety about their loved ones back inJudah, the hardships of forced labor.But there were deeper problems too, graverquestions, including:

• Should the Israelites stick together as adistinct group?

• Or should they simply allow themselves to beabsorbed into their new surroundings?

To some, the Babylonian captivity seemed likea nightmare from which they would surelyawake, the exile would be over shortly and theywould be allowed to go back home again. Thiswas especially true of the people deported in 598B.c.'.;_

Then*Jerusalem was still intact. Life was goingon there as usual under a descendant of KingDavid. The liturgy was being carried on daily inthe temple. Surely the exiled Israelites wouldfind their way back before too long.

"At first I was a typical pastorfor solid, lifelong Catholics. Now,"he added, "we've gone missionary.We're baptizing entire families."Marveling at the growth in hisministry he added, almost in awe,

"We have almost 60 people becom-ing Catholics this next Easter."

That theme is a common one. Thefuture presents challenges butpriests frequently see them aspossibilities for expansion and

Athletic and ac-tive until his illness, he talked withme about his gradual loss of mobili-ty, work and health. He realizedthat in the near future life itselfwould be taken away. _

. "Little by little," he said, "theLord takes away everything youhave until you have nothing left butthe Lord himself," He said this notin a complaining or bitter way, butsimply as a truth, with a trace of asmile on his lips.

There is a great diversity amongclergy today, perhaps greater thanin the past. But our concerns areoften similar from priest to priest,even from region to region: Theneed to minister to a rapidly chang-ing world; the desire to minister ef-fectively and with religious authen-ticity; the recognition that we needto, have our own personal religioushouses in order.

Those three concerns are the focalpoint of many discussions among.priests today.

TO DISPEL those vain hopes, the prophetJeremiah had written a letter in which he advisedhis people to build homes in Babylon, plantgardens and prepare to settle down for a longstay. .

On the other hand,; the Israelites had the quietunderstandable problem of discouragement,which took an especially dangerous turn. Whathad become of all their grandiose hopes of daysgone by?

Yahweh had promised them that, as his specialpeople, they would be the salvation of the world.And now look at them! Perhaps, and this wasespecially true after the destruction of the templein 586 B.C., Yahweh was not the one true Godafter all. The gods of the Babylonians seemedmuch more real and much more powerful.

It rarely occurred to the Israelites who enter-tained such blasphemous thoughts that it wasthey who had failed Yahweh, not he who had fail-ed them. . -

Often the Israelites' discouragement led toapostasy from Yahweh. Babylon presented themwith a glittering, cosmopolitan civilization, the

likes of which most Jews had never seen before.There were opportunities for wealth, comfort,pleasure, imfluence. With the right connectionsand a bit of hard work one could really go places.

ON THE RELIGIOUS Diane, the temples ofthe Babylonians were magnificent and theceremonies of their liturgy dazzlingly attractive.Jerusalem, after 586, was a heap of dirty ashes,the temple area a mass of rubble which would becovered in time with unsightly weeds.

Given these circumstances, why shouldn't theIsraelites be sensible and accept reality, especial-ly since that reality was so inviting?

All things considered, it is one of the mostremarkable facts of human history that many ex-iles did not allow themselves to be swallowed upby the inevitable. Even though hopes of nationalrestoration grew dimmer by the day, many

As usual, Yahweh made use of all factors athand to accomplish his purpose and counteractthe pull of other forces which threatened tothwart his plans. - . .

New York parishhelps childrendevelopmusical talents

NEW YORK (NC)-St. .Augustine's Parish is offeringyoungsters culture for $7 a month.

About 250 students—85 percent ofthem black, 15 percent Hispanic andmost between nine and 14—attendthe parish program in the basementof St. Augustine's rectory. For $7 amonth they can learn an instru-ment; for $2 a month they can studymusic theory and appreciation,dance (ballet, jazz and tap), arts andcrafts and creative writing.

• The Augustine Fine Arts Programwas founded in 1979 by ThomasPilecki, a former music teacher inPhiladelphia Catholic schools. Theprogram's aim is to "get students toexpress their totality in the arts,"Pilecki said.

"Historically, churches are wherethe black artists have got theirchance to develop," said FatherRobert Jeffers, St. Augustine'spastor. "I felt St. Augustine's oughtto be encouraging them too."

"It gives students a sense of ac-complishment, above and beyondtheir ordinary school work," accor-ding to Father Jeffers. "It alsogives them a challenge and thediscipline necessary to experiencean even wider range of artisticendeavor.

"These kids have obvious, greattalent that needs to be nurtured in

the kind of disciplined and accoun-table environment the program pro-vides."

Students participate in an or-chestra; dance, mime and dramatroupes; gospel and Spanish choirsand ensembles specializing in a par-ticular type of instrument ormusical style. A magazme^Iottings,provides a forum for writing, artand photography. • "

The program gets funds from cor-porations and foundations, such asthe New York State Council on theArts. Some of the instruments weredonated out of the surplus ofschools in the Philadelphia Ar-chdiocese.

Pilecki requires his students,especially those studying an ap-preciation.

"We want to teach them that per-

formance is not just doing what youfeel like doing. It's discipline coupl-ed with the heartfelt thing," hesaid.

Proper conduct is expected ofstudents, and discipline—throughdetentions—is strictly enforced.

"The word discipleship—that'swhere the word discipline comesfrom," Pilecki said. "It meanseveryone sharing a vision together.When students and teachers share asense of discipleship, that im-mediately sets up its ownparameters of behavior."

Five of the program's studentsnow study at Manhattan's HighSchool of Music and Arts. Its per-forming groups are also in demand.The gospel choirs, which includeadults, have sung at church anti-nuclear ceremonies and at memorialservices for Dr. Martin Luther King

The choir also appears in the car-dinal's archdiocesan appeal filmmaking the rounds of parishes. Itsglee club has performed at awardsdinners at the Helmsley Palace andWaldorf-Astoria hotels.

Pilecki credits a good deal of thesuccess to the 14 people who teachwith him. All are professionals inthe arts.

Some students stay in contactafter they go to high school. An-thony Crawford, 15, a student atCardinal Spellman High School,sometimes serves as a studentteacher for the program.

"When I enrolled in the programin seventh grade, it was justsomething else to do,' he confessed."Now it's teaching me to not onlybe a student but a teacher too. Ithelps me understand what myteachers are going through." .

"I didn't know I needed them," she said calmly. "I didn't know thattrees were supposed to have so many individual leaves and I thought mybrothers looked so much alike because they're related."

"But how have you been able to see the blackboard and do yourhomework?"
