PREFACE

The International Association of Universities (IAU) and its IAU/UNESCO Information Centreon Higher Education are pleased to present the twenty-ninth edition of the InternationalHandbook of Universities, which offers updated, comprehensive information on universitiesand university-level institutions worldwide.

The Handbook was first published by the IAU in 1959 in response to the growing demandfor authoritative information about higher education institutions worldwide. It has grownconsiderably over the years in both the quantity and the quality of its entries. Today, it includesmore than 18,400 higher education institutions extracted from the lists provided by thecompetent authorities or academic bodies in 196 countries and territories, their websites orofficial documents. TheHandbook also comprises basic information on the education system ofall countries, a list of fields of study and an index of all institutions. Only higher educationinstitutions offering at least a four-year degree or a four-year professional diploma are includedin the Handbook.

The compilation of the Handbook involves working on documents in many languages, covering a wide range of continuously evolving systems of higher education. Every effort hasbeen made to ensure that the entries are as comprehensive as possible and that the information isaccurate. The IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education is indebted to thosemany higher education institutions, governmental agencies and academic bodies, which haveprovided material for this edition in order to make it a unique and authoritative source ofinformation. Where information was not available in time for inclusion, entries have remainedthe same as in the previous edition. The date of the latest update is indicated at the bottom ofeach entry.

The full wealth of data held by the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre - including theinformation in the Handbook, as well as more comprehensive data on higher education systemsand credentials offered for more than 18,400 institutions - is available at www.whed.net, theIAU World Higher Education Database (WHED) Portal.

The production of the Handbook and of the WHED Portal is part of the continued drive bythe IAU to provide access to information on higher education institutions, systems, andcredentials worldwide. For academic research on higher education, please refer to the IAU’squarterly scholarly Journal Higher Education Policy1.
