Compeer cleans up and makes a differenceThe Veteran’s Memorial

Walkway in Lebanon received an abundance of TLC recently, when almost twenty volunteers heeded the call to perform The Clean Up of Veterans Memorial Walkway on a perfect Friday morning.

The group was fortified by the monthly Compeer Coffee and Camaraderie breakfast at Heisey’s

Diner. Then the volunteer team of diligent work-ers, hosted by Compeer of Lebanon County, and sponsored by Make a Difference of Lebanon, spread out between 4th and 12th Streets, filling trash bags along the way. The Quittapahilla Creek did not escape the team’s relentless focus.

“Veteran’s Memorial

Individuals from Making a Difference, Diffenbach’s Chips, Desert Knights MC, and Compeer CORPS bond for a common mission – to clean up Veterans Memorial Walkway in Lebanon.

Walkway represents a group that truly deserves our attention and support,” says Compeer Program Manager Julie Baum, “We are incredibly grateful to the volunteer team who showed their respect of our veterans with this notable example of demanding work by many individuals.”

For more information about the event or to vol-unteer, contact Compeer of Lebanon at 717-272-8317 or visit www.compeer-leb-anonon.org, or follow them on social media.

Complimentary water and ice cream will be pro-vided by the Hershey Medi-cal Center. Food and drink for purchase will be offered by food trucks parked along the perimeter of the crowd. Guests may also bring their own food and drinks.

“We are thrilled to re-turn to this beloved holiday tradition for our musicians and our fans to celebrate the birth of our country with this annual concert on the lawn of the Medical Center,” said Hershey Symphony Orchestra Executive Direc-tor Paul Metzger. “We have certainly missed this concert and hope the community is looking forward to its re-turn,” he added.

The first half of the con-cert will feature popular movie themes and the sec-ond half of the concert the Orchestra will present “An American Salute” accompa-nied by Hershey Symphony Orchestra vocalists as they celebrate America and pro-vide a special tribute to the military.

The concert is under the direction of Dr. Bob Sproul and is sponsored by Her-shey Medical Center and the Hershey Symphony Or-chestra with support from Hershey Expositions, Filson Water, Pepsi, and Hershey Ice Cream. The human brain is a marvel. Everything from thought to memory to emo-tion is controlled by the brain, which only under-scores how impressive this incredible organ is.

The word “brain” is something of an umbrella term to refer to an organ where various complex tasks are performed. Johns Hop-kins Medicine notes that, at a high level, the brain can be divided into three main

parts: the cerebrum, brain-stem and cerebellum. Each of these parts serves differ-ent functions.Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the larg-est part of the brain. The cerebrum is located in the front area of the skull and consists of two cerebral hemispheres, left and right. The National Cancer Insti-tute notes that areas within the cerebrum control muscle

function, speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing, and learning. The cerebrum also enables actions asso-ciated with the senses, in-cluding vision, hearing and touch.

Each hemisphere within the cerebrum controls half of the body. Johns Hopkins notes that the right half of the cerebrum controls the left side of the body, while the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body.

The functions of different parts of the brainThese hemispheres com-municate with one another through the corpus callo-sum, a centrally located C-shaped structure of white matter and nerve pathways.Brainstem

The brainstem is the part of the brain that is connected to the spinal cord. The brain-stem is made up of the mid-brain, pons and medulla. The midbrain is a complex structure that facilitates various functions, includ-ing hearing and movement and calculating responses. The pons is part of the cen-tral nervous system and is located at the base of the brain, where it serves as a bridge between the midbrain and the medulla oblongata. Nerves within the pons en-able a host of activities, in-cluding chewing, blinking, focusing vision, and facial expression, among others. The medulla is at the bot-tom of the brainstem where the brain meets the spinal cord. The medulla regulates many activities that are vital to survival, including heart rhythm, breathing and blood flow.Cerebellum

Johns Hopkins notes that the cerebellum is often re-ferred to as the “little brain.” That’s because it’s roughly

the size of a fist. Located at the back of the brain be-tween the cerebrum and the brain stem, the cerebellum controls balance for walk-ing, standing and other vol-untary muscle movements. Johns Hopkins notes that studies are exploring the role of the cerebellum in thought, emotions and social

behavior. In addition, stud-ies examining a potential link between the cerebellum and addiction, autism and schizophrenia are ongoing.

The brain is a complex and incredible organ. Each area within the brain has its own unique role to play. TF226037

With God in our future, the God on whom our country was founded, our future is bright. We must incorporate Him

into our lives and the lives of our children. Begin with weekly family worship and then make Him part of each day and each decision. Keep His words in your heart, where they are safe from harm. When you hear the church bells ring this week on God’s day… remember that they are bells of freedom. Let them forever ring in our great nation…the United States of America!

Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. (or 325 degrees F. for dark or non-stick pans). Grease the bottom only of a 12 inch pizza pan with cooking spray or shortening. In a large bowl, stir brownie mix, butter and eggs until well blended. Spread in the pan. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted 2 inches from the side of pan comes out clean or almost clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour. In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Spread mixture evenly over brownie base. Arrange berries over cream cheese mixture. Stir jelly until smooth; brush over berries. Refrigerate about 1 hour or until chilled. Cut into wedges. Serve. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator. Serves 12.

Hi! Today I have two fun (and tasty) summer recipes for you. The first one is for a brownie dessert pizza with fresh berries! Oh... and lets not forget about the cream cheese base! Your family will fight over this one for sure, so be prepared! The second recipe is for a quick and simple kebab recipe that you can grill up in just a few minutes. It has a fresh lime marinade that gives the chicken a nice bright flavor twist. It sounds really interesting, I hope you enjoy it!

Dessert Pizza

Chicken & Sweet Potato Kebabs

Canola Oil (for the grill grate) 1 tsp. Lime Zest Plus 1/3 Cup Lime Juice1 Tbsp. Olive Oil 1 Tbsp. Pure Maple Syrup1 lb. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs (cut up)2 Small Sweet Potatoes (cut up)Salt and Ground Black Pepper

Set up the grill for direct cooking and heat to medium. Once hot, clean and lightly oil the grates with canola oil. Whisk together the lime zest, juice, olive oil and maple syrup in a bowl; transfer half to a small bowl and reserve for basting.Trim and cut the chicken thighs into 1 inch pieces. Cut the sweet potatoes into 3/4 inch pieces. Add the chicken and sweet potatoes to the remaining marinade and toss to coat; let stand for 5 minutes. Thread the chicken and sweet potatoes onto skewers; discard the marinade. Season with salt and pepper. Grill, covered turning occasionally, and brushing with marinade, until chicken is cooked through, 10 to 15 minutes. Serves 4.

With summer officially here, many people will look to grilling, cookouts, and other outdoor gather-ings, including fireworks displays, to enjoy the warm weather. As the Fourth of July approaches, the Na-tional Fire Protection Asso-ciation (NFPA) is providing important reminders and guidelines for safely enjoy-ing these activities.Make sure your gas grill is working properly

• Leaks or breaks are pri-marily a problem with gas grills. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

• If your grill has a gas leak detected by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a pro-fessional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire depart-ment.

• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and do not move it. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting it.Never leave equipment

unattended• Make sure to closely

monitor food cooking on the grill. Turn the grill off promptly when you’re done cooking, and let it cool com-pletely before returning it to its original location.

• For campfires, fire pits, and chimineas, always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby, and make sure the fire is completely out before going to sleep or leaving the area.Keep equipment a safe distance from things that can burn

• Place your grill well away (at least 3 feet) from anything that can burn, in-cluding deck railings and overhanging branches; also keep them out from under eaves.

• Keep portable grills a safe distance from lawn games, play areas and foot traffic.

• Keep children and pets well away from any type of equipment in use.

• In areas where camp-fires are permitted, they must be at least 25 feet away from any structure and any-thing that can burn. Also make sure to clear away

dry leaves and sticks, over-hanging low branches and shrubs.Use fuel and fire starters properly

• If you use a starter fluid to ignite charcoals, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

• Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

• Never use gasoline or other flammable or com-bustible liquids on firepits, chimineas, or campfires.

• For electric charcoal

Safety guidance for grilling and outdoor activitiesstarters, which do not use fire, make sure the exten-sion cord you are using is designed for outdoor use.If a fire breaks out, call the fire department

• For any type of outdoor fire that can’t be quickly and effectively extinguished, call the fire department im-mediately for assistance.Only attend public fire-works displays

• Many towns and cities will be hosting public fire-works events for the Fourth of July this year. If you are planning on making fire-works part of your Fourth

of July celebration, NFPA strongly recommends at-tending these public shows rather than using consumer fireworks, which can cause serious injury and damage due to their unpredictability.

• An es t imated 19,500 fires in the US were started by fireworks in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires. These fires caused five deaths and 46 injuries to ci-vilians and $105 million in property damage.

• More than one-quarter (28 percent) of fireworks fires from 2014-18 occurred on the Fourth of July. Ap-proximately half (49 per-cent) of all fires reported on the Fourth of July are caused

by fireworks.• In 2020, an estimated

15,600 people were seen for fireworks-related injuries at hospital emergency depart-ments, according to data col-lected by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commis-sion. This was the highest estimate seen in more than 15 years. For more facts and information about fireworks, visit www.nfpa.org.

Interview tips: A classic recruiter pet peeve is the part of the interview when they wonder out loud if you have any questions for them, and you simply reply “no.” That can be a big strike against you. Having questions shows how interested you really are in the role and may also show that you did your homework and should be taken seriously. Prepare a list of questions you’d like answered, It’s ok to refer to your list of questions during the interview.

Part of a successful job interview is your ability to mar-ket your experiences and skills as they relate to the job de-scribed, and a great way to do just that is by telling stories to illustrate your experiences and successes with those skills.Stories make you engaging, allow you to show off your per-sonality and demonstrate good communication skills too.

A positive conversation is key to s successful job interviews. Employers don’t want to hear a litany of excuses or bad feelings about a negative experience, even when legitimate.

As the old saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” For job seekers, truer words were never spoke. Particularly today, when job openings attract applicants like honey does bees, setting yourself apart from the legions of others applying for the same position can prove quite dif-ficult.

A greater number of grad-uates paired with an oversatu-rated market of individuals looking for new work has only increased the competi-tion. More than ever before, job seekers are fighting an uphill battle to get themselves noticed, a battle that seem-ingly grows more demanding with each passing day.

Such a reality only height-

ens the importance of mak-ing a strong first impres-sion, one that will make you stick out in the interviewer’s mind, hopefully earning you a second interview along the way. While nearly everyone is aware that appearance and education go a long way toward making a positive impression, there are several other areas job seekers can address to make themselves

Nail the interview: new process awaits job seekers

stand out from the rest.· Preparation. In addition to knowing all about yourself, you should know about the job you’re applying for as well. Candidates who enter interviews with little or no knowledge of the open posi-tion rarely, if ever, get a sec-ond interview, much less a job offer. Research the posi-tion as well as the company. Don’t be afraid to write down questions that might arise dur-ing that research and refer

to them throughout the inter-view. Doing so will show the interviewer you’re genu-inely interested in the posi-tion and the company, set-ting you apart from applicants just looking for a job. Include in your research any recent company developments that perhaps made headlines in the news.· Expect the unexpected. A side effect of the boom in job seekers is that recruiters are expanding their horizons

to better whittle the appli-cant pool. While in the past interviews were more predict-able with respect to questions asked, the wide and largely qualified applicant pool many job openings create has forced recruiters to ask less predictable questions to help them choose between other-wise equally qualified can-didates. Therefore, preparing for such questions can be a great way to set yourself apart. In addition to the more traditional inquiries, topics such as conflict resolution, problem solving and how well you work with others are now subjects many recruiters prefer to broach. The more specific your answers, the more likely you are to stick out in the interviewer’s mind. A popular trend among many interviewers is presenting hypothetical situations and asking applicants how they might deal with such situ-ations. Think about the job before your interview and what situations might arise that the interviewer could present hypothetically. Strong responses to such questions will certainly make you stand out.· Be mindful of mannerisms. Though most job seekers are smart enough to look the part with a nice suit and hair-cut, many don’t realize their behavior during the actual interview. Regardless of how nice your suit is or how good your hair looks, fidgeting, failing to make eye contact and even taking too many notes while the interviewer is speaking can distract the inter-viewer from you and what you have to say. Even if your insides are racing, appear as calm and collected as possible on the outside. If offered a glass of water, take it. You’ll want to speak as clearly as possible anyway. When responding to ques-tions, be mindful of how long you’ve been speaking. While you’ll want to avoid “yes” or “no” answers, rambling on will only make you appear nervous and ill-prepared. CB06A424

George Rodriguez, founder/organizer of the 15th Annual Sweep the Streets two-day, double-elimination basketball tournament, is pleased to announce that Christman’s Funeral Home has agreed to the Lead Sponsorship for this popular community event.

Additionally, Christ-man’s will sponsor a special tournament involving local high school teams (to be determined) which will take place on Saturday, July 16, at the beautiful Coleman’s Park courts. “Special thanks to Greg Vaitl of Christman’s Funeral Home and to Mayor Sherry Capello and the City of Lebanon,” says Rodri-guez.

The 15th Annual Sweep the Streets tournament will take place, for the second time, at the facility in Cole-man’s Park, Lebanon, on Saturday and Sunday, Au-

gust 6 and 7. Sixteen teams players age 18+ will com-pete for the championship.

“This entire event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. We particularly thank Greg Vaitl of Christman’s fu-neral Home for his support and leadership,” adds Ro-driguez. “Greg really cares about our community.”

“This tournament is a healthy, sports activity fo-cused on all the right things, preparation, focus, and teamwork working toward a goal,” notes Greg Vaitl, adding, “a community event like this is easy for us to support. We are pleased to include sponsorship of the high school championship this time, too.”

For more information about Sweep the Streets, contact Christman’s Funeral Home by phone at 717-272-7431 or visit www.christ-mansfuneralhome.com.

Sweep the Streets basketball tournament plannedWays to go green

if you’re not ready for an electric vehicle(StatePoint) Countless

headlines suggest you have to drive a battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) if you care about the planet. Yet consumers, including many who want to be “green,” are still opting for gasoline-powered vehicles 98 per-cent of the time. What’s standing in their way?

• Cost. It may cost as much as $10,000 or $15,000 more up-front for a battery-electric car compared with a similar gas-powered car.

• Charging. Installing a home charger that’s

required to run a EV can cost an additional $1,000 to $3,000. Additionally, a home charger may not be possible for those who park on the street or live in an apartment building.

• Road trips. The num-ber of public charging spots is growing, but it’s not like the nationwide network of gas stations. Even with a relatively robust 200-mile range, EV owners must plan carefully for charging breaks every few hours of driving. It may take 30 to 60 minutes to add enough

battery power for another couple hours of driving. Bigger battery packs can give longer range, but also longer charging times.

If any of these reali-ties are the deal-breakers preventing you from going green behind the wheel – relax! There are still at least four good alternatives to EVs that will still help the environment without break-ing the bank.

• Hybrids. Hybrid tech-nology has been around since the late 1990s. Hybrids combine a smaller gas engine with battery-

powered electric motors for better fuel economy. Some hybrid sedans now aver-age more than 50 miles per gallon. A 50-mpg hybrid replacing a 30-mpg vehicle will save $625 a year in fuel costs, or $3,100 over five years. You’ll save even more if your trade-in gets less than 30 mpg!

• Plug-in Hybrids. A plug-in hybrid is a hybrid you can plug-in to charge a separate battery and then drive for 30-50 miles on pure electric power. After that, a gasoline engine kicks

During the month of July, Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Af-fairs (DMVA) wildlife staff will provide free guided tours of the only popula-tion of the rare regal fritil-lary butterfly in the eastern United States at Fort Indian-town Gap (FTIG), near An-nville, Lebanon County.

Reservations are required and attendance is limited. All attendees, including children, must register on-line at www.ftig.isportsman.net/ButterflyTours.aspx to obtain a free permit. To at-tend a tour, you must present a permit for the specific date and time slot of that tour.

Guided tours will be of-fered on July 1, 2, 8, and 9. Departure times will be 10

a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and noon each day. Tours will be conducted rain or shine and no rain dates will be provided.

“These tours allow the public to see this rare but-terfly and its associated grassland habitat on mili-tary training ranges, as well as the many other natural wonders on the 17,000-acre military installation,” said John Fronko, director DMVA Bureau of Environ-mental Management. “Staff will also highlight a variety of animals and plants found at Fort Indiantown Gap and how the military presence on the installation is vital to the persistence of these spe-cies and their ecosystems.”

Attendees will be re-

quired to caravan from the meeting location to the tour location in their personal vehicles. Tours will last ap-proximately one hour plus driving time. Meeting loca-tion and parking informa-tion will be provided after obtaining a permit.

Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome to at-tend. Tours will be on foot on gravel roads and mowed paths; wandering off the path, into the fields, or away from your tour guide is prohibited. Please bring drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for uneven terrain. There will be little or no shade on the tour route.

Like many military in-stallations, FTIG has a di-

verse population of plants and animals. It is home to 49 species of mammals, 143 species of breeding birds, 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of fish, more than 800 species of plants, and many notable species of invertebrates in-cluding 86 species of but-terflies and more than 500 species of moths. Many of these plants and animals are rare and considered species of conservation concern. These species persist at FTIG because it provides an assortment of high-quality habitats. This includes rare early successional ecosys-tems such as grasslands, thickets, shrub lands, and young forests which were created and maintained from disturbances caused

by military training, fires, and conservation efforts. The installation is home to 1,000 acres of scrub oak and pitch pine barrens and over 4,500 acres of native grass-land habitat – the largest in the state.

Delivery THE KEY TO SMART BUYING

Millions of adults go to great lengths to protect their assets. Those measures run the gamut from simple ev-eryday efforts like utilizing two-factor authentication when accessing financial accounts via online or mo-bile banking apps to more complicated undertakings like estate planning. Life insurance is a component of estate planning that is vital to anyone looking to protect their assets in the event of their death.Explaining life insurance

Life insurance is both similar to and different from

other types of insurance. Like homeowners and auto insurance policies, life in-surance provides financial protection in difficult cir-cumstances. A life insurance policy is a contract between an insurance provider and a policy holder that guaran-tees a payout to beneficiaries designated by the insured in-dividual in the wake of that individual’s death. Personal history

Insurance providers dif-fer, but individuals inter-ested in life insurance can expect to be asked about their medical histories and

lifestyle habits when dis-cussing policies. Prospec-tive policy holders will often be asked to sign waivers that allow providers to ac-cess their medical records. This is necessary so compa-nies can get an idea of the health of the person apply-ing for life insurance, which will determine the cost of a policy. That information, as well as family history, is im-portant because it can serve as an indicator of future health risks. Some variables, including lifestyle habits like smoking, won’t neces-sarily appear on an individ-ual’s medical history. In an

What to know about life insuranceeffort to address that, insur-ance providers typically ask prospective policy holders to answer a variety of ques-tions about their lifestyle, including whether or not they smoke and how much alcohol they consume. It’s vital that individuals answer these questions honestly, as companies can deny payouts to beneficiaries if they deter-mine policy holders misled them during the application process.Coverage

Coverage needs vary de-pending on the individual. Life insurance is intended to provide for loved ones

in the aftermath of a policy holder’s death. How much money will those individu-als need to pay their bills? Young adults who are just starting their families may want more coverage than aging adults who have al-ready paid off their homes and saved a considerable amount for retirement. The National Association of In-surance Commissioners rec-ommends that individuals ask themselves how much of the family income they provide and if anyone else, such as an aging parent, de-pends on them for financial

support. Answering these questions can help individu-als determine how much coverage they need. Types of coverage

Insurance providers offer various types of life insur-ance policies. Term life policies are among the most popular because they tend to be affordable while of-fering substantial coverage. There are different types of term life policies, but policies tend to run for any-where from 10 to 30 years and expire around the time

The sun makes life on Earth possible. While the warmth and light provided are beneficial for many rea-sons, the dark side of the sun is the potential damage that can be caused by ultraviolet radiation. These facts about sunlight and UV rays, cour-tesy of the U.S. Environ-mental Protection Agency, the FactFile and NASA, can help people make more in-formed choices about spend-ing time in the sun.

• There are three types of UV rays. UVA reaches Earth’s surface because the atmosphere does little to shield these rays. UVA rays contribute to ailments like wrinkling and can pen-etrate through windows and clouds. UVB rays largely are thwarted by the atmo-sphere. However, latitude, altitude and time of year may increase the likeli-hood of UVB ray exposure, which is often the culprit be-hind skin cancer. UVC rays are completely absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and don’t pose a significant threat, even though they have the highest energy lev-els of all three types of UV rays.

• The sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is

Fast facts about the sunat its highest in the sky. The ultraviolet radiation will be less severe early in the morning and later in the day.

• Snow, water and sand reflect the damaging rays from the sun and can in-crease a person’s risk for sunburn.

• The higher up in al-titude a person goes, the stronger the sun’s rays be-come. Therefore, sun expo-sure in the mountains can be more dangerous than expo-sure at sea level.

• Areas closest to the equator will get the longest hours of sunlight. The sun’s rays are much stronger near the equator.

• Australia ranks near the top of the skin cancer risk list along with New Zea-land. These countries are located close to the ozone layer hole over the Antarc-tic. In addition, during sum-mer, the Earth’s orbit places

Australia closer to the sun compared to other countries. That results in an additional solar UV intensity, accord-ing to Specialist Clinics of Australia.

• UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and can cause it to prema-turely age.

• UVB rays damage the outermost layers of the skin and contribute to the most skin cancers. Overexposure to UVB rays causes delayed sunburns.

• While the sun is more intense during spring and summer, sun glare may be a bigger problem in the fall and winter. The sun during the colder months takes a lower angled route when rising, rather than seemingly going straight up, which it does in the summer. That keeps the sun in a blinding position for a longer period of time in the fall and winter.

• The sun’s energy is pro-duced by the fusion of hy-drogen into helium. Nuclear

reactions occur in the core of the sun due to tempera-ture and pressure. The sun

also emits infrared radiation, visible light and ultraviolet light. TF226054

Many of today’s new home amenities, from workout rooms to in-home theaters, generate added noise rather than peace and quiet. Now put these rooms next to an in-home office and it can be a recipe for disaster.A remedy for control-

ling noise if you are con-structing a new home is by soundproofing. One of the most economical ways your builder can accomplish this is with basic home insula-tion. Fiberglass insulation can add greatly to the com-fort and value of a home,

too.Controlling NoiseMaterials placed in walls

and ceilings of a home can help reduce sound from the outside and from room to room. When most people think about insulation, they think about insulating the exterior walls. This is important for con-

trolling sound from the outside. However, with noisier rooms, the interior walls need to be insulated as well. There are materials on the market today that help reduce noise between

rooms, for example the in-home theater and a living room or dining room that may be next to it. Ceilings and floors should also be insulated to reduce noise overhead and below, as needed. For added sound control,

ask your builder to insu-late your heating and air conditioning ducts. If you are having metal ducts installed, have them lined with fiberglass insulation or consider a high-efficiency system made from rigid fiberglass duct board.

I love you Christopher LeedomI will always love you. My only regret is that the last time I saw you,

I would have hugged you a little tighter, more often than I did.

I would have told you I love you a little louder, louder than I ever did and stayed by your side this whole time.

My mind knows that you are gone, but my heart will never accept it.

Thank you for all the flowers, cards and prayers.Richard Leedom, Dad Cindy McGuire, Mom

Guaranteed Delivery THE KEY TO SMART BUYING

Guaranteed Delivery THE KEY TO SMART BUYING

individuals reach retirement age. That’s because many people save enough for re-tirement and don’t have the sizable expenses, such as a mortgage, to account for at this point in their lives. That means loved ones won’t necessarily need to be pro-

vided for in the wake of a policy holder’s death.

Permanent life insurance policies last until the policy holder’s death so long as he or she continues to pay the premiums on time. Financial advisors can help individu-als understand the ins and outs of the various types of permanent life insurance policies, which differ from

term life policies because they can serve as invest-ment vehicles and sources of loans in certain instances.

Life insurance is a vital component of asset protec-tion that can offer peace of mind to policy holders who want to ensure their loved ones are provided for in the wake of their death. TF226001

in, operating like a hybrid. For commuting, a plug-in is a great choice. The aver-age U.S. commute is 16 miles. With just 32 miles of electric-only range, that commuter wouldn’t need gasoline to get to work.

• Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles. Fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are elec-tric vehicles powered by a reaction from hydrogen fuel and oxygen, making water vapor the only emission. Some FCEVs have a range of more than 400 miles, compared to 200-300 for most newer EVs. FCEVs are refilled at a station, like the gas stations you’re used

to. The main challenge is a lack of hydrogen infrastruc-ture. California is the only state with a robust network of fueling stations – but more are on the way.

• More Efficient Gasoline-Powered Cars. While not as dramatic in helping the environment as the other options men-tioned, conventional gas engine cars still have a lot to offer. Automakers have been improving them con-tinuously to meet tougher federal fuel economy regu-lations. Some gas-powered SUVs you see around town might get 30 percent better mileage than the 10-year-old car or SUV they’re replacing. That would cost about $400 less per year to operate than their 2011 counterparts, or an extra $2,000 in your pocket after just five years!

The world is increasingly moving online. Perhaps no-where is that more evident than in the financial sector. If asked to recall the last time they visited a bank in person, millions of people would likely be stumped for an answer.

A recent survey from Provident Bank found that 80 percent of consumers prefer digital banking to in-person banking. And while 95 percent of consumers surveyed indicated they are confident that their bank can protect their data in online and mobile banking plat-forms, it’s still wise for in-dividuals to do everything they can to ensure their on-

line banking activities are as secure as possible. After all, data from the security intel-ligence experts at Kaspersky indicates that 22 percent of online banking users utiliz-ing PCs were attacked with the banking malware Zbot in 2020. That underscores how important it is that online and mobile banking users prioritize security when ac-cessing their accounts via websites or their phones. These strategies can help consumers enjoy the conve-nience of online and mobile banking while ensuring they can rest easy knowing their accounts are as secure as possible.

• Avoid keeping a pass-

word too long. It’s under-standable if users have had the same passwords for months, if not years. Life in a digital world requires user-names and passwords for just about everything, but it’s vital that banking pass-words are routinely changed. Changing passwords once per month improves secu-rity, especially if passwords include a combination of let-ters, numbers and symbols. When changing passwords, resist the temptation to use a password you’re already using for another account.

• Use only your own network when banking online or via your mobile devices. Public Wi-Fi may

be convenient, but users have no idea who else might be making use of that con-venience. Various cyberse-curity experts indicate that public Wi-Fi is especially vulnerable to man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, a type of security breach in which a third party in-tercepts communications between two unsuspecting parties, such as an online/mobile banking user and his or her bank. To reduce your risk of being victim-ized by an MITM attack, avoid using any website or app, including banking plat-forms, that require a login on public Wi-Fi.

• Install system up-

Be more secure when banking onlinedates. Users may find system update prompts al-ways seem to come at the most inconvenient times. As a result, it’s tempting to click the “Install Later” button and completely for-get about it. But the longer users wait to install updates on their devices, including their smartphones, the more vulnerable to attacks they become. When prompted, install system updates im-mediately. Such updates typically only take a few minutes and often include new security features de-signed to protect users and their information, including any financial information they might have on their de-vices.

Some simple strategies can make it easy for online and mobile banking users to safeguard sensitive financial information from cyberat-tacks. TF226998

The negative effects of isolation is something the vast majority of the world can now relate to. The COVID-19 pandemic forced people from all walks of life and from every corner of the globe to spend less time with friends, family mem-bers, neighbors, and other acquaintances. As the world cut back on in-person inter-actions to curb the spread of the virus, billions of people recognized just how difficult feelings of isolation can be.

Feelings of isolation are

a problem many seniors know all too well. A report from the National Acade-mies of Sciences, Engineer-ing, and Medicine indicates that roughly 25 percent of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be so-cially isolated. That’s both sad and unhealthy, as the National Institute on Aging notes that research has linked social isolation and loneliness to problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Seniors are invaluable resources in their communi-ties. Community leaders and local residents can make a concerted effort to involve seniors in local events. Such efforts strengthen communi-ties and help seniors remain active participants in their towns and cities.

• Promote senior-friendly volunteering opportunities. The im-portance of volunteers was never more apparent than during the pandemic, when many nonprofits and other

Involve seniors in your communityorganizations were forced to meet their missions without the assistance of volunteers who had been urged to stay home. Seniors were among the first people eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and receive boosters, and many have been anxious to get back to pitching in. Communities can facilitate those efforts by developing and highlighting senior-friendly volunteering op-portunities. For example, libraries can start a program where seniors read to chil-

dren in person or via Zoom. • Give seniors a chance

to teach. Communities have rich histories that younger residents, including middle-aged adults, may be unaware of. One great way to shed light on local history is to invite local seniors to speak about how life in their com-munities has changed and how it’s stayed the same. Themed speaking series

can attract locals with spe-cific interests. For example, local veterans can be asked to share stories of their time in the service, while retired business owners can offer insight and advice on run-ning successful local busi-nesses.

• Develop nature-based programs. A 2019 study published in the journal Sci-entific Reports found that spending just 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with better overall health and improved well-being. Nature-based community programs, such as planting days at local parks, hiking clubs or even beach or lake-side cleanups, is a great way for community residents, in-cluding seniors, to get their weekly dose of nature and spend more time with their neighbors.

Many seniors routinely confront feelings of isola-tion. Community leaders can take steps to help aging residents by developing and promoting programs that are inclusive and senior-friendly. FP224839
